SWID 7" a picture disc?

According to this listing on ebay, the Polydor sales note is listing the Sleep When I'm Dead 7" as a picture disc. I think we all remember the Only One box debacle, so don't put too much faith in it just yet. (Thanks Rod x)

  2. but more than anything i just wanted to be the first comment on a post

    ReplyDelete
  3. One can only assume that the disc has a picture on it? Presumably the same image as on the cover. Which begs the question, what's the point?

    ReplyDelete
  4. its a way to make money. and collectors like them...

    ReplyDelete
  5. I can't believe it... But I hope I'm wrong ! :)

  6. as a collecting nerd, the news of a potential picture disc has girded my loins...yes please make it so!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Just to make it more exciting for collectors i guess...

  10. Completely off topic, but I'm watching an Oz music quiz show - one of the questions tonight was Which American composer wrote Adagio for Strings? Everything comes back to The Cure

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, I hope so. I am all over picture discs!

  12. Hi Kate and Anah,
How is life in the Northern hemisphere?

    ReplyDelete
  13. i still don't get it..... what the hell is a picture disc?

  14. To Elise: I remember seeing a game show here in the UK a few years back.

To win A GREAT BIG FUCKING HOUSE!

Robert Smith is the singer with which cult 80s band?

The clock ran down with me screaming more and more at the TV. The couple didn't get it - and so deservedly left to lead a life of bottomless regret.

  15. Elise! Good, other than it's going to be 100 degrees here tomorrow! <3

Anybody who doesn't know that (who lives in modern-day accomodations) doesn't deserve a Bog Fucking Dream House!

  17. Ginge - they have had a few Cure questions on Spicks and Specks - usually ending up with me yelling at the tv too :-)

Anah - 100degrees yuk - I think summer is so uncivilised!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. but picture disc=way cool....i have a small vinyl collection myself...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love the fact that the Dream House couples' stress levels must go through the roof everytime they hear the Cure.

  22. i was at college orientation and i signed up for all of my classes but i made sure that i got scuba diving so i can go "down under" and dive in the great barrier reef :) how have you been??

  23. *Hugs all around*!

I have some picture dics in my collection, and even have the End Of The World and Taking off 7" ones in front of me right now.

I hope we get some for the new album... <3

    ReplyDelete
  24. anah- ive missed you too! lol i was only gone for about 3 days but still...it felt lk years!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Elise: I much prefer Fall myself! Although Summer here brings fireflies in the evening, which is pure magic.

    ReplyDelete
  26. *sigh* the cure needs to go back on tour again soon....i already miss those all night chats on concert night :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. *hugs for everyone*

Anah - I love spring! New life! SUmmer in Oz is just blah - and getting more and more humid as the years go by. Dry heat I can cope with, but when it is humid it is awful.

I've missed everyone so much. My work is insanely busy at the moment, so I haven't been able to spend as much time catching up as I would like.

    ReplyDelete
  28. well i am going to have to go because i have a 4 hr drive back home, but ill be on when i get home :) bye guys

    ReplyDelete
  29. Elise, I am telecommuting today. It's great working in my pajamas. :)

My cat is very happy, too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kate - but are you getting much work done?

    ReplyDelete
  31. elise - about as much as I would in the office! But, seriously, it seems like everyone is on vacation right now, so I can only get some things done on my own. It's all good. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kate - I find if I work from home I get easily distracted. When I'm focused I can get a lot more done than if I am at work (less calls and interruptions) but I usually find myself getting distracted by things around the house.

    ReplyDelete
  33. elise - yes, I understand. For me sometimes, it's the other way around. Too many interruptions at the office. I can focus better at home. (and get the laundry done, too!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kate - nothing like multi-tasking :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm lying on the couch - thinking I really should go to bed

    ReplyDelete
  36. elise, go to bed if you are sleepy. :)

Personally, I put a high priority on sleep. I try to get at least 8 hours a night. I am a total grouch otherwise. Eep!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good advice, Kate - i think I'll hit the hay in about 15 minutes. I've been enduring just 6 hours sleep and 12 hour work days - bed is a good idea

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sweet dreams Elise! I'm off to work, have a great day everyone! :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sleep well, elise. It's good for you :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. any weirdo collectors here? ;) i used to be rabid, but now i'm sort of not. i have the 7 inch picture disc of 'end of the world' if anybody wants it. maybe i'll email craig to make this a bigger listing, maybe not. if anybody sees this post and wants it, lemme know. otherwise it's going to amoeba. for the greater good.

    ReplyDelete
  41. mb - lol - Half my vinyl collection is from ameoba! I need to seriously consider shedding my collection too. the collection bug got a little out of control a few years back...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Aww, I'm sad I missed Elise. I was thinking about her today.

Hi to everyone else, though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Kate: Hi there. Still in your PJs? :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi V! - Elise is in lala land indeed!

    Hi all!

    Hi "Craig the lurker"!

It'd be neat to get one of the singles as picture disk! :oD I will receive the 4 singles in a single shipment so I have to wait for all of them. IdealCopy's shipping charges were off the roof otherwise... But that led me to buy the singles off iTunes so I end up paying anyway *sigh*

    Life, I'm telling you... lol

I hope everyone's getting over the end of tour blues... I'm trying hard! I tell myself that The Cure finally have time off to enjoy the last bits of Euro 2008 (even if England didn't make it this year). I think I'll put a picture of the band on my laptop and pretend I'm watching the game with them! Naaa... I do have a life!

Talk to y'all soon! Don't forget COF geeks... It sometimes help people get in touch when no thread is "active" on COF!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bon jour, Fantac! Ça va? :) (Did that make any sense?)

    ReplyDelete
  46. V & Kate - Funny... I started dressing up for the day but I only made it to my shorts! I still have the PJ top on... I'm afraid my mind is trying to tell me something ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Kate: Nice. What kind of work do you do, if I may ask?

    ReplyDelete
  48. V - C'est parfait! ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  49. V - (Actually, "bonjour" is a single word.) O:o)

    ReplyDelete
  50. V - Mostly, I do non-technical project management, with a bit of event planning tossed in.

I'll be getting dressed soon, as I have to go out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Kate, V, and Fantac! I'm been going thru CoF withdrawl. I needed a fix. work's sloooow today.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wish you all a very nice day!

I have to get started with mine... It's my students' prom tonight! You remember that night? They'll all be so excited :o)

    Talk to you soon!

    ReplyDelete
  53. fantac - seems a bit late in the year for prom... gosh, such great memories!

    ReplyDelete
  54. yeah, prom on june 25th?

    GO GERMANY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Fantac: Oh shucks, I knew something was wrong. :) Oh well - I was close!! Thanks for the French lesson!

    ReplyDelete
  56. awwwww. Prom. how cute. On a Wednesday though? Must have ants in their pants today. Are you in the classroom today?

    ReplyDelete
  57. thistle: I know what you mean, but I have sooo much to do at work right now. :) Oh well, still needed a fix.

    ReplyDelete
  58. monkey - they playhing Turkey?

    ReplyDelete
  59. lol

Yeah guys... This is Quebec, Canada! If we hold prom too early, there might still be snow!!!

No, I'm kidding of course. Some schools have their prom at the end of May/early June but our school holds it until AFTER the exams and all. We do end school very late here *sigh*

But ya, I do have prom every year! lol

    ReplyDelete
  60. That sounds like so much fun, fantac!

    So, classes are over already?
The students must be so excited! Do they get all dressed up?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Kate - Sure thing! The young ladies definitely often manage to look like women while the young gents... well... They try hard to look like men! lol It's defnitely cute indeed :o)

Oh because that's the thing too... Our senior are only 17. They do one year less than "normal" high schools... Our system's different in that regard too.

    ReplyDelete
  62. monkeybutt - Turkeys that made if to the semis!!! It's too bad they'll be playing with the B team today. I predict an easy win from Germany.

    ReplyDelete
  63. agreed, fantac, they've made it this far on sheer chaos and will. should be a great game. good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  64. fantac - do you wear the 70's era frilly powder blue tuxedo to mix things up?

    ReplyDelete
  65. mmmmm...collecting things...
    OHM NOM NOM NOM.

    ReplyDelete
  66. ok, i will give all ya'll one more chance. 7 inch picture disc of 'end of the world' with that goofy stick figure art. going to amoeba if somewhere here doesn't grab it. going once...going twice...

    ReplyDelete
  67. If I knew what a picture disc was, I would know whether to be excited about it (and disappointed when the news turned out to be false).

    ReplyDelete
  68. Heya everyone!
Very exciting prospect for collectors! Cool if it turns out to be true. I am not a collector of anything. Well... books, though not intentionally, just habitually. Heh.

Oh, and working from home FTW! :^D

    ReplyDelete
  69. it's so hard to tell if people are being sarcastic or not :)

it's a picture on a vinyl record (those major audio delivery format before the invent of the CD)

Picture Discs date all the way back to the 1920s and were commercially available up to the early 1960s. They became more of a promotional tool as the seventies arrived, and were pressed in small quantities and some were released to the markets with as little as 100 pressings. Because of the limited quantities and unique shapes and pressings, picture discs are highly sought after by collectors. As the 1980s rolled on the production of the picture disc was an important part of any artists release campaign. With the arrival of the 90s and the demise of vinyl records, the production of picture discs was again relegated to promotional or limited issues. The picture disc has made somewhat of a comeback in the last few years.

    ReplyDelete
  70. MORE:

From this collector’s point of view, one of the more fascinating areas of recorded music is that of picture discs.

The most simplistic definition of a picture disc is the incorporation of graphics and music onto a round or shaped disc. A more complete description of a picture disc record (modern day) or commonly referred to as a pic-disc, is a record containing a base layer of PVC (poly vinyl chloride), surrounded on both sides with a photographic layer, and finished up with a clear layer of PVC, again on both sides of the disc.

As the five layers are combined, a continuous groove of music is pressed into the playing surface. Any excess vinyl is then trimmed from the surrounding area giving the recording a clean edge and thereby completing the disc. Although pleasing to the eye, the overall sound quality of these recordings are not comparable to the better sounding black vinyl discs. This is due in part to ultra thin outside layers of clear vinyl which supports the grooves.

  71. Thank God for Morris!

I too was wondering if people were being ironic or not lol

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thistle - No, by the way, I won't be "mixing things up" lol One of the male seniors ALWAYS does wear a Dumb and Dumber type tuxedo so... I wouldn't want to spoil their fun ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  73. (I'm talking to myself but fuck it)

Anyone care for a Euro 2008 semi-final chat? lol

    ReplyDelete
  74. would love to, fantac, but we're getting ready to go down to the bar to watch!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Have fun monkeybutt!!! Wish I could join you! I think I'm one of 3 Canadians worldwide to follow the European Championship!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. oh i want this to be picture disc! i have every cure picture disc. btw are those mexican picture discs of tib and porno official releases?

    ReplyDelete
  77. OMG!

Are these guys (Turkey) FOR REAL??? :oO

    ReplyDelete
  78. (Yes, I know. I'm talking to myself again... Isn't that pathetic?!)

    ReplyDelete
  79. there will, under no circumstances, be any discussion of the Euro semi-final - I'm not watching it until tonight and it spoils it if you know the score in advance...!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. OOPS! lol Gotcha podgirl! I thought I was alone with myself! lmao

    ReplyDelete
  81. I thought all you guys were as crazy as I am about collecting Cure stuff. Better check my site then for all those Cure picture discs (pd) :

    www.quadpus.tk

    ReplyDelete
  82. sorry, I just noticed pd are not listed on the site, but as 7inch, 12inch and lp (only in my spreadsheet they are listed as pd), but you get my drift :-)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hey just saying Hi to anyone out on the blog today. Now that the tour is over, I can't seem to find the time to get on here. Been busy at work & with some family stuff! You don't come on here a few days & you miss a lot. OK back to catching up!

    ReplyDelete
  84. hi kitty. i'm always buzzing around. not much else to do while at work these days.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Here's how cool Fantac is: he bought and mailed a Cure t-shirt for me from one of the NYC shows! Awfully brave to be buying clothing for a girl. :D I'll let you know when it gets here, F.

BTW, I finally saw a pic of someone wearing the lady's t, and that probably would have been OK. I only saw one displayed and that scoop neck looked too, uh, scooped.

    ReplyDelete
  86. OK, what's this Chain of Flowers dealie on Facebook that everyone was talking about a while back?

    ReplyDelete
  87. excuse my ignorance re: the picture disc... i guess i did know that but was hazy about it. blame the blasted heat for melting away my brain.

in any event i don't really collect new vinyl... i just happen to have my old vinyl records still, plus the vinyl for "the cure," since it had an extra song on it. it's useless, though, as my record player barely works. i kinda want to get a new one, cuz vinyl is cool.

i'd like to be a more vast collector of cure stuff, but i really only have time to collect books.

    and clocks.

and working on my mirror collection as well.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I actually asked the seller about it a few days ago and he confirmed that regarding the Polydor info it's gonna be a picture disc. Finger crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I used to be a record collector but that shit gets expensive in a hurry. A bunch of years ago I dumped all my Cure vinyl while it was still worth something (in my opinion anyway) and honestly it hadn't been played in years since I sold off my turntable. These days if it's not being played in iTunes, iPod or Sirius I'm not listening to it! My CD's don't even get a play much anymore! These last round of Cure singles I have purchased on iTunes and happy to do so cuz I got it fast!!!

Hey I still have a ton a vinyl left that I just haven't gotten around dumping yet. If you want DM, New Order and a ton of other stuff let me know...

    Jerry

    ReplyDelete
  90. can anyone recommend us a really good movie to see tonight?
against all better judgment we saw 'the happening' the other night. still trying to get the taste of shyamalan out of my mouth :c

    ReplyDelete
  91. i collect vinyl, btw. and if anyone needs stuff taken off their hands i'm happy to do it.

question for you other vinyl collectors: what is your most prized possession?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hey Sofia, shyamalan aftertaste is very hard to get rid of and the hangover is horrible! Go see Iron Man if you haven't!

    ReplyDelete
  93. if tio jerry says iron man then iron man it shall be! :D

    ReplyDelete
  94. My most prized Cure vinyl was my acetate of Grinding Halt/Meathook. I'd have to look at what I have now to see if there's anything of note. I know I do have a lot of promo's and stuff. Maybe my Joy Division flexi of Komakino?

    ReplyDelete
  95. I saw Iron Man with my wife and kids and it got thumbs up all around. Be sure to stay ALL the way to the end for a cool extra scene!

Tio Jerry approves this message err post!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Good morning all.

Glad to see you are all still chatting :-)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Good Morning Jo! I just joined a little here before going home...

    ReplyDelete
  98. How are thing in your world, Jerry?

What time are you heading home?

    ReplyDelete
  99. And, sadly I must go again.

I'm sorry my visits are short these days, work is insanely busy (nothing like a 12 hour day to destroy the happy Cure buzz we had going).

Take care everyone and know that I miss you all :(

I'll be back in about 13 hours

    ReplyDelete
  100. JERRY: i would love your vinyl. email me or im me at woozefa (aol).

    ReplyDelete
  101. sofia: my most prized collection is probably the kmkmkm orange vinyl with the b-sides.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I used to collect vinyl until my turntable died about 3 years ago. I guess I have over 500 albums mostly stuff form the 80's. I should get a new one since it's such a shame to have all that vinyl & not play a single one for years. I'll never sell them even if I never play a single one again. I ust can't do it!

My favorite would be Japanese Whispers because I think that was the 1st Cure recored I ever bought.

And it would be cool if SWID comes out on a pd. I'd buy it. I have the EOTW pd and a few DD ones but I never really felt the need to buy them for other artists.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Oh monkeybutt, that's a favorite vinyl of mine too!

    ReplyDelete
  104. i meant possession, btw.

i also really like this bootleg i have called 'lorelei 89' with this great picture of robert and 'same deep water as you' live.

i also have an unopened, factory sealed radio promo by the rolling stones from 1968 before beggar's banquet came out. i don't even want to think of how much that might be worth.

    ReplyDelete
  105. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Oh I hope it's worth a lot monkeybutt for the unopened RS album.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hey elise! I missed you by 20 minutes! Hope you're not too crazy busy today but isn't today the big implementation day or some sort of big test for it next week. Well take it easy & hopefully everything goes well for you.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Wow that much mb! Very Cool! Would you ever consider selling it if someone really wanted it?

    ReplyDelete
  109. hell yes. i need a rolling stones promo album like george w. bush needs a 3rd term. i'd definitely sell for loads of cash.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Monkeybutt: I have Loleli too. And how come you guys don't know what a picture disc is? I have like 15 Cure ones at least. If you really don't, can't you just Google it? :P

    ReplyDelete
  111. *Loreli.

Yes, I am a master typer.

    ReplyDelete
  112. let's try again: lorelie. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  113. the other cool one i have that i forgot about (gasp!) is a 5 record set called 'glow in the dark.' it's got a picture from robert and mary's wedding on the back. lots of great songs.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I will totally buy that from you. I know which one that is and have never been able to get a copy.

    :D

    ReplyDelete
  115. sofia- my most prized possesion (vinyl wise) is my Taking Back Sunday "A Decade Under the Influence" single... they don't make it anymore :)

    ReplyDelete
  116. hey I have a record player and it always skips my records... could that mean I need a new needle??

    ReplyDelete
  117. craig- if you are reading this-or for anyone else- i took a pic of my tv on fuse during "PUSH" where you can see the COF sign! :) yay! lol here is the link!!

    ReplyDelete
  118. sara--I tried to view the picture but I get a message saying that I must log into your private album in order to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  119. uhh crap let me check it out...

    ReplyDelete
  120. okay try this one!!

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/27811171@N05/

let me know if it works!!

    ReplyDelete
  121. sara - nice! I didn't see it the first go'round, but did on the second. Chris, you rule!!! How fun was that. Fantac's prom seems fun and all, but I think it was this weekend for us CoF geeks.

    ReplyDelete
  122. my prized vinyl stuff would have to be my sealed copy of disintegration. i've got more valuable stuff, but that one has the most sentimental attachment.

    ReplyDelete
  123. sara---Ok I can see it now. Thanks! Very cool!!! I'm glad that the sign was shown on the Fuse show!!!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Ok a little off topic but I was looking at the RCMH pictures and the one of the COF sign picture with the COF fan names on it, I'm not sure but it looks like under the the H someone wrote my name down cure_kitty. Kind of looks like it but I can't be for sure. If so, I just want to say thanks for doing so! :)

    ReplyDelete
  125. monkeybutt, i want that glow in the dark. i WANT IT.

    call mehhhh!

ive got a purple and white marbled smiths 12". i wonder if its worth anything. there is only room for 2 musical obsessions in my life.

i cant believe your rolling stones promo is worth that much! ebay that, dude! its a mint!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Monkeybutt:

Sofia and I will have an oil wrestling match over your Glow In The Dark.

    *I mean...bidding war. Yes, that's what I meant!

    ReplyDelete
  127. email me offers through my blog. :) then i'll soundly reject them.

    ReplyDelete
  128. or wait. what was that about oil wrestling?

    ReplyDelete
  129. I can't oil wrestle myself!

    Or *can* I!?
    O_0

  131. A dollar? I think me oil wrestling myself would be worth more than that~!

    ReplyDelete
  132. you're probably right, but it's a buyer's market right now.

    ReplyDelete
  133. MonkeyButt: You are funny.

    ReplyDelete
  134. thanks, v! wanna cuddle? ;) or alternately, beat each other senseless with clubs?

    i'm pretty open next thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  135. MonkeyButt: Aww, I'm flattered, but I really don't think I can top Anah with her one-woman-oil-wrestling match! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  136. you may be right. think about it, though. from the barnyard to your backyard, it's the latest craze that sweeping the nation. the new thing to do with your friends is beating each other with large planks of wood, or sacks filled with doorknobs or chunks of concrete. fun for the whole fam!
