    1. To be fair, the sets started becoming very predictable and singles orientated since the NZ/OZ leg of the tour...so this set cant be looked at in isolation...its virtually identical to the Oz setlists....i hope youre right and they do start mixing it up, because the start of the tour showed so much promise

      Delete
  7. So, they kick out the rarities and bsides they played at the beginning of the tour...it became too predictable. The last two encores are Always the same. I love you guys, but it's time to change something.

    3. No, the European leg started tonight. The setlists will morph and change over the next 2 months. If not, then whine about it.

    4. I don't live to criticize the band, Craig...and it's not "one fucking show"...I saw the cure live more than 15 times and I Will attend 4 shows in Europe...could I express my Point of view?

    5. My point is this is only 1 show! The 1st night of this leg of the tour!

Maybe they want to play a few, get into a certain comfort level, before breaking out some of the rare songs and surprises.

Maybe they tried Figurehead at soundcheck and Robert felt like it wasn't quuite ready yet. Who knows?

I'll bet many fans who were actually AT the show, not sitting behind their computer screens, loved the show.

      Delete
    6. The set lists haven't changed much since May especially the encores...

      Delete
    7. The whole tour barely started in May. You're saying they've been stagnant the entire time? GTFO.

      Delete
    8. Not stagnant but painfully pedictable other than throwing the b sides not played before, and probably the weakest song on Head On The Door, Screw, they have so many great songs, such a shame.

      Delete
    9. and weren't those b-sides part of the rarities indicated on the press release? actually, they were. Weak as you might consider screw to be, that is also a song that qualifies as described in their press release. so again, its back to those cynical and unappreciative fans.

      Delete
  8. Too many singles - what is this, a greatest hits tour how boring. Where are the rarities?, and just one new song which they have been playing since May. Sorry Robert but this is lazy. Like the previous post I have paid good money to see several shows, and hope this improves.

    4. How can a three hour show ever be considered lazy on any level... ??C'mon! Of course we want to hear rare tracks and bsides all night but rememember there is also that whole reality thing going on.

  9. Thanks for the scopes. I forgot about the ten hour time difference between here and Helsinki and ended up "tuning in" about 1-2 hours too late. I hope some of the scopes stay up for at least the next few days. I noticed they sometimes disappear once it's no longer live. Wow...what an incredible setlist and a great way to kick off the European leg! The last part of the mainset almost had me on the edge of my seat...especially the part starting with FTEOTDGS all the way to the end of mainset, and into the first encore. It was definitely far from being "soporific"! 😄 😴 I don't know why but those last five songs in the mainset seemed to go so well together, even though they may not appear to mesh lyrically and/or melodically (except maybe the 2nd/3rd songs). I personally prefer the darker, slowed down version of The Hungry Ghost (similar to the version from Jimmy Kimmel Live back in '08). I remember hearing that version from outside the closed main entrance of the studio, and immediately loved it despite my foul mood at the time. I later saw the performance on YouTube, and it was every bit as good on video as it was in person. Some of the best moments sometimes arise out of the absolute worst moments in life. In the case of Jimmy Kimmel, my friend and I were rewarded with one of the best versions of THG we'd ever heard (despite waiting in line for the better part of the day, having tickets and still being denied entrance...long story). I suppose it was worth it just to hear that one version of the song. I think some songs might sound substantially better if they were intentionally slowed down somewhat, though many would probably disagree. I would love to hear darker, more languid versions of some of the more pop-oriented songs. Imagine a dirge-like Friday?(!) I know JLH was originally a much slower song. There have been dance-oriented remixes of classic songs such as those on Mixed Up... I wonder what would happen if the tables were turned (or the turntables turned? Haha...) and the poppier or more upbeat songs were given a "dark" makeover? Maybe that could be a concept for Mixed Up part 2?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haha...I was being a bit facetious. Mixed Up has the distinction of being the one Cure album that has collected the most dust over the years...I listened to it a total of maybe once or twice. Lovesong remixed was my favorite, which doesn't really count since it's the closest to the original compared with the others. Maybe it's time to take it out of storage, dust it off and give it another go. I still think many Cure songs would benefit from going "low and slow"...sort of like the sous vide culinary technique but applied to music. Low and slow is a versatile strategy that could also be applied to other areas in life, though some instances might venture out of PG-13 territory. 😮 RS's voice could drop a few registers and the pace adjusted for a more funereal effect. Maybe not quite as low as the deep voice heard on the (mostly forgettable) Club America, but perhaps a more Harold and Joe-esque lower register. 😛

    2. I liked the mixed up version of A Forest, see......

  12. This might seem boring to the people who follow the setlists. But you have to remember that they have not played in finland in over 20 years. Majority of the audience saw them for the first time tonight. I do not think that they complain about the lack of b-sides. I am not complaining. I had so much fun. See you in stockholm!

That behaviour was normal as teenagers...but for fuck sake we're all grown adults here

I expressed my disappointment at the setlist last night which kicked this all off. Reading Antti's comment I can see his point...they hadnt played Finland in 20 years, so there was bound to be a lot of singles....I just hope that means that therell be lot more rare stuff in the cities that have played a lot in over the years.

Sweden) is that you say what you think.

But here the lot of you are simply wrong. The concert was amazing. Feel happy to have attended. Feel free to keep the dis in a spin but then don't complain why bands don't visit your arenas.

If they had a new album, and they obviously do not, the set would have many new songs in it.. The well has obviously run dry. No risks are being taken and it's all too safe. It's boring and stale. The Cure are no longer essential. They've become the Rolling Stones and it is sad but not that hard to accept. I gave up on them after bloodflowers..

  17. Wow, I thought the US fans were harsh. I did not expect it from the Euro fans, and all this after only 1 show? The first proper "Tour Show" in over 2 months. I know a lot has happened to me in the last 2 months.

I expected them to play a it little safe. Its not just the band, its the whole production team as well who may be a little rusty.

I would have gladly seen this show! I'm just happy they are touring at all. Unfortunately, a Cure Tour is door to world that will one day close forever.

I can see why no peace can be possible in the Near-East, you guys, all Cure fans, are like you're going to punch each other! Really a shame! Oh well, after all it's your problem...

Personnally I find the setlist a bit too predictable and singles-oriented, but i can understand they think it can please the audience in Helsinki where they haven't played for 20 years. Still, I suppose a few more 'rarities' like screw or 2 late or whatever a bit less often played, could have been introduced...

    ReplyDelete
  20. those rarities you listed, have already been introduced during the American Tour.

  23. There is enough comment here to actually mean something ...I think the cure has become too much to too many ... muddled and suppose but they always were which made them great and loved. They are what they are now and just enjoy ... listen to standing on the beach b sides in a dark room when needed 😉

  24. Some odd comments here. This setlist does look a little 'best of...' but even so I think it is a good setlist for a part of the world that hasn't experienced the band for 20 years. I've seen the band 5 times in the last years and i'd be fairly happy with this setlist as there are at least 6 songs I wouldn't have seen previously.

We can judge more after the next show.

  26. Although there are similarities no two setlists have been exactly the same so every show has been unique in that regard. JLH is not usually played in encore and one of the few times Boys Don't Cry didn't close the show. I still consider Closedown and Last Dance as rarities since they have been so seldom played over the years and Burn is being heard live for the first time in Europe.

    1. I think you hit the nail on the head. It might be b/c the fans who have spent the most money, especially those coming from afar, want to (understandably) get a maximum "return" on their investment....the "return" in this case would be the amazing gems that are rarely played. I am honestly a little shocked by the strong reaction to this first show. There are still many shows left on this leg, the band is probably just breaking the ice and haven't gotten into the groove just yet. I was also surprised to learn they haven't played Helsinki in two decades, especially considering its close proximity to other cities in the Baltic region. Or maybe it's because of the close proximity that it's been skipped, coupled with relatively fewer fans in the area? In any case, Helsinki fans who were disappointed with the setlist can at least find consolation in the fact that the next few shows are (almost) a hop, skip and jump away.

  29. Personally I love the criticism of the setlist.not many people are objective. The same applies to many bands unfortunately including U2 etc. Craig is defensive of the band. Facts are facts though. The biggest problem is that Bob isn't into social media and as such is out of touch with interaction with his fans and shat they want. Including the live unreleased dvds.that combined with shows selling out so quickly means they become complacent and there's really no incentives for him to really throw in so many other fan favourites like Faith, Figurehead, Drowning man, Sismese twins,Same deep water etc

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't get the sense he's complacent when you consider the fact they've played 80+ songs so far which shows they are throwing in as much as they can and hopefully there will be more surprises!

Didn't think the setlist was that bad Note the heavy focus on their fan favorite Disintegration playing 9 tracks from the album. They should have threw in Same Deep Water as well though.

      Delete
    2. Robert does not interact on social media sites, but I know Roger at least does. I don't think Smithy has become complacent, just that the creativity has dried up I'm afraid. I was really hoping for a new release before the European Tour, but with just one new song ( new, or is it Christmas Without You?) it's not going to happen anytime soon. However like most fans I'm hoping they release something special, before we all leave this mortal coil, talking of which -no Caroline Crawley dedication, sob...

  35. As a fan for 35 years now, I would love if if they played more songs from the Faith, pornography era. Especially as I wasn't fortunate to be able to get tickets for any of the trilogy shows. Yes Disintegration is a fan favourite, but a lot of the sets on this tour have been singles orientated ( 19 played in Helsinki), which after 8 years since the last tour, just reeks of a cash in I'm afraid. I really hope they introduce some of the B side songs they played in North America, and more excellent new songs by the time they reach the UK, however I have my doubts...only The Cure could go on a World Tour without an new album to promote.
I could go on as well about only two UK venues, with a lot of fans missing out, but that would be starting another argument!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm a bit shocked with the negative reaction. I think they'll bring out the rare stuff when they're playing multiple nights at the same venue but, as people have pointed out, if they haven't played somewhere in a long, long time, they're going to play the better known songs.

  39. Review from Kimmo:

Very long show. There were however no big surprises and to my taste, quite a number of songs were played from Disintegration. Of my wish list, I was really missing songs like Charlotte Sometimes and perhaps some songs from WMS. Robert and Roger seemed to be in a very good mood, perhaps as a result of some days off in Helsinki. Robert was struggling to convince the audience of his new Finnish vocabulary but he had forgotten most of it, he said, due to Finnish beer drunken while learning the words. Simon was wearing Iron Maiden T-shirt. Maybe he also knows how popular Iron Maiden was here.

The quality of sound was not as good as before. They seem to play loud and rough, and for instance the songs like Just Like Heaven and Night like this sounded thick and heavy.

Best moments: Push, Lullaby (condensated moment), the beginning of Shake dog Shake and the end of Wrong number with Gabrel's solo.

Hope to see them again in Finland. They seem to like being here. It was a real Friday atmosphere. However, our audience was cool and quiet especially compared to the audience with I saw them last time- Antwerpen 2008.

Last observations I could not really hear keyboards. Why? Robert was carrying guitar even if not playing except during Last Dance.

  40. Somewhat ironically, it's The Internet with this very Site, setlist.fm etc that spoils The experience. We know every setlist and See The patterns. I think they vary it more than on other Tours. There is a kmkmkm, a Desintegration and a wish Heavy Set list Variant afaik. So from show to show the difference Can be quite Great. But with more oversight The patterns are clear. Of course, they would Not make The setlist at random.

And having yt Videos and periscope from The Shows, it's as if We are there. New Songs like iwnbts aren't new anymore because We Can Listen to them as much as We want to.

  41. What i am dissappointed about is that there are no Interviews. We don't know about Plans or difficulties following them. New Album, live DVDs etc. I ve hoped that rs would give some insights. Even if there will be no new Material in near Future them explain why...

    1. Absolutely my man! There is no other band who have not released old live material on dvd let alone new stuff. Most bands are interactive on social media.let me put it to u guys who dislike the set list criticism - if the band played a Reflections style show out if surprise do u really think the audience would be disappointed? Never!those shows sold old just like any others.thats the problem with Bob in that because shows are always sold out way in advance there is no pressure to do anything interesting

    3. I actually do think people would be disappointed if they pulled a surprise reflections. Not the hardcore of course, but most attendees go to these shows purely to hear the hits. I remember loving the 2014 Apollo shows but heard at least 5 people say they were upset that Friday I'm In Love wasn't played. You are a very naive if you think most ticket holder want to hear faith all the way through, most of them won't know a single song!

    4. I agree with the point about interviews though. It really says something when Lol's has had most press than the Cure's tour.

  45. The least Robert could do is to be released 2 singles with 6-8 new songs like Massive Attack in 2016. He has many songs ready.
It is unacceptable what is done for the last years. Just only live show??
    No Robert. You are retired.
Better way studio albums with few live shows....Reverst

    2. Robert admitted that he was wrong about 4:13D. He wanted double cd but....
He is artist, he make amazing music but in other things (out of music) he make wrong choices. Thats all.

    3. R.Smith is human, just like me and you. I agree that sometimes he makes bad choice..especially in the last years..i think i'm simply not attempting this tour, if he wants to play this kind of setlist..But it's ok. It's just life.

  48. Very few bands play close to 3 hrs, one could argue 3 hrs spent with the cure is never time wasted. On an unrelated note, it's insane 4:13 dream came out 8 years ago!!!

    1. I can't believe they will play for 3 hours at venues with consecutive nights, more like 2 1-2 as long as they cut out some of the poppy stuff that's OK.

  49. I'm a bit shocked @ the negativity as well. When they came on stage @ MSG and I heard the opening notes of plainsong I honestly got choked up and teary eyed as it was the 1st time I was seeing them in 4.5 years

Saw all 3 shows @ MSG in June and that still wasn't enough: booked it down to Maryland to see them again and while the show was almost the same as the 2nd show I saw @ MSG I didn't care a whit.

To be able to see a band LIVE that I have loved for 30 years is amazing to me. Were there more obscure songs I wanted to hear that I didn't? OF COURSE but that did nothing to take away from my gratitude and joy.

I know and accept that the great majority of people who go to the shows WANT to hear Just Like Heaven and Close To Me, etc.

You can of course complain if you like but anyone who thinks Robert is selling out is out of their minds - he could've made a career out of doing pop stuff and actually been a much wealthier man.

    1. That's cool AFHAT...unfortunately the msg shows were nothing out of the ordinary not were they spectacular by that point...they had already pulled out all the stops by the time they got to NY

    2. There were certainly setlists that I liked better but hearing Twilight Garden live and getting one of the rare performances of Pornography and being one of a handful of shows to get A Strange Day was would've been enough for me but when they broke out banafishbones I damned near lost my mind.

  51. Sorry for messing with your sensibilities. I know some of you still have virgin ears. Just tired of people whining about everything. I don't really get bothered with other opinions. My comments were not verbal abuse towards anyone in particular. But since you asked. I was rather expressing my disappointment towards those on here that keep posting how dull the set list is but these same folks will start complaining the cure never play or release anything. If you don't like the set list stay home. Simple. Keep your beaks shut if you hate it. Stop trashing the band you are so emphatic about and move on. Damn Keith the Xanax worked!!!! Thanks now fund something else to do.

  54. Excellent concert, really enjoyed it. The band sounded great and Robert sang superbly. Some minor sound issues, keys were absent at times or very low in the mix.

Fantastic evening, I have no idea why someone would talk negatively about it.

  57. How about everyone just be happy they are touring because they don't have to ! 3 hours worth of high quality music and still get frickin whiners. Sounds like a lot of miserable folks to me !!

  58. This is to all the complainers. It disgusts me to no end that so many "fans" have such negative opinions ! I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions but come on some comments are down right selfish bullshit ! I think The Cure has given us so much beautiful music , just look at their huge musical catalog , that if they never did another new song who the frick cares . I would love to hear any song they chose to perform for us and I mean any song ! Hell , they don't need the money , ever thought maybe they're doing it for the fans and because they love what they do. As we grow older we all get set in our daily boring ass lives and forget what it's like to have fun. We're becoming old complaining ass old folks is all! Why don't y'all Get the sticks out of yalls asses and realize the gift that we have been given by being able to witness one of the greatest bands of all times ! Let's not forget that Rob's voice sounds perfect and the band sounds incredible and oh yeah , playing for 3 hours ! Have y'all forgotten to be appreciative or has the sticks up y'all asses got lodged up too far ! So sick of this selfish unappreciative rude society of today !

    1. It is expected that many fans disappointed. Last album was not so good and RS left the time go by. We all remember the emotion when caught in hands The Cure new album. It was amazing and we lost it. If someone discover Cure music or is a new fan all shows is like something new. But we must see and the other side many fans who expecting a great new album. Its natural.
