For the first time in 7 long years, I can finally say I'm going to see The Cure again! A Cure with Roger O'Donnell and Lol Tolhurst! A true Black Friday in NYC. : ) But are you ready, NYC? You going to be the best Reflections crowd yet? Going to put LA to shame? Going to actually sing along to the keyboard parts in 'Play For Today'? Of course you are! This is NYC! Have a great time tonight, and please enjoy these shows for the very special events they are.

For tonight, I will try to keep you updated as best as I can on Twitter. I hope you can see them posted above. If not, just check here.

  10. This particular lineup is very unique not only because of the people involved but the way it suits these particular albums..
If this lineup was ever to make an album (wouldn't it be MENTAL if Robert asked Laurence to stay on?!??) I really think it would be unlike anything we've heard from The Cure before sonically..
Craig, you really need to take the time to hear how Robert has arranged everything - it's hard to explain, but if someone was to go to this concert not knowing any history or music from the group, they would probably think these were current songs.. They just seem to have been 'modernised'without taking away from the feel of the original song..
Okay, rambling now.. :p Enjoy the buzz, Craig and we'll see you on the other side :)

  11. I used to want folks to cheer during the synth part of "Play for Today", but don't so many expect to do it simply because it was on "Paris"? The album version is meant to be quieter, which is why the synth isn't showy. I don't care if folks are quiet and want to enjoy the show in their own way as long as they respect my right to hear the performances' subtleties, anymore. Similarly, Robert should understand that some of us don't want to dance during "The Love Cats" -- especially since he's never been a big mover and we love him for it, despite that.

In any case, enjoy your show, Craigers. You've earned it.

  12. Do not give COF a second thought, Craig. Be in the moment! Enjoy every second.

  13. Enjoy the show Criag! It should be starting right now. Your NYC experience is going to go through the roof during the show tonight! Take Care & Love every minute of it!

  14. It seems you are having such a great night! Enjoy the show!

  15. robert starts the set tonight saying, "um I assume ny may have a better idea of what we're doing, but just to explain this is not our new album, it's from 1979." what a great show so far! 99% of the crowd standing and robert is the most talkative I've seen him at a show...

  16. a holy hour so far, another one coming up!

  20. Absolutely amazing show tonight. I'm still reeling. Can't wait to see them again on Sunday!

  21. I know I had my wonderful, amazing, extraordinary time in LA, but MAN did I wish I was there tonight. I would never, ever get bored of that show.

I'm glad if the NY crowd was better than LA! Even more, I'm so happy that you are feeling better, Craig!

  23. So I've been rambling on all night on Twitter about the show, and figured I'd also post it all here. Just some quick thoughts on this fantastic show:

Loved the little guitar parts Robert added in Faith. If we can't have extra lyrics, this will do.

Charlotte was slightly disasppointing. Just seems to be missing something. I don't know, maybe its just me.

But isn't this version of Other Voices fantastic? It feels so hard and heavy in a way. Loved it!

Crowd was hard to judge. Great at points, weak at others. Saw you guys at the back of upper balcony giving it your all. : )

I was stuck in the middle of dullsville. Guy next to me didn't look too thrilled to be there. Just there for the wife/girlfriend.
He gave me the oddest look during Play for Today. Oh well, I had a great time.

Just seeing all of the good wishes and happiness for me. : ) Thank you so much! You guys are the best! It really was pretty special for me.

After saying they were doing b-sides next, and playing World War, Robert said he just realized that wasn't a b-side, but on Boys Don't Cry. Said it took him a month to just figure that out. That's why he doesn't talk much. : )

Someone threw a flag or piece of clothing on stage, and during Simon's song, Inbetween Days, he got down and scooped it up with his bass

RS opened the show by saying he should explain what they were doing with these shows. Though since this was NYC, not LA, we were probably more aware of what the shows were about. : ) Words to that effect. Loved it! : )

When the stage invader attacked, RS said it had been a long time since that happened.

For those going Sat/Sun, I was not checked at all when going in. Could have snuck anything in. Security was going around and stopping people while filming, though, so try and be discreet.

The light/fog show is pretty incredible! So scaled down from what we are used to, but just as, if not more, effective.

Like I said during the show, the pace is quick, there's barely a moment between songs. Even the set breaks are over in a flash. That's good.
But, boy when you realize it's halfway over, in what seems like 10 minutes, you want to just hold on a little longer. Make it last all night.

At the start of 1st encore, Robert said it was tempting to do a 4th album. Wasn't sure he'd be able to resist by the end of the weekend.

Don't know what the problem with the late start was.We weren't allowed to take our seats until 7:40. Not sure if it was a Beacon or Cure call.

As you can see/hear in that Inbetween Days clip, RS says "See you again next year...or tomorrow" and makes that hand gesture. Loved that! : )

I just have to say that I had some pretty high, maybe unrealistic, expectations for these shows, and they blew them away!

The Cure's professionalism, their dedication to perfection, and their hard work in getting this show to such a high level, is so evident!

So to Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, @RogerODonnell, @LolTolhurst, the crew & everyone helping on this, THANK YOU! Fantastic job!

So, yeah, I froze on the Staten Island ferry, watched LSU crush Arkansas, and saw a phenomenal Cure show. NYC Day 4 was pretty good! : )

  24. Glad you had a great time, jealous you got an extra track though! Agree about the sets flying past, over way too soon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great feedback for the first show! I wonder how it will be for the final night! Thought the extra track may have been the caterpillar, but maybe that'll be saved for the top shows.... :)

  26. Waking up after last night's show. Still magically spinning!

  27. The days of the sydney reflections shows were also the two days that I planned and booked the US flight that I'm now on with a few friends, so to think that I'm now seeing them again a few months later on a trip that was so
    Spontaneous is so incredibly surreal.
I'll be attending tonight and tomorrow night alone, I'm pretty young, with an obvious Australian accent and will be wearing my Sydney reflections shirt. Come keep me company if you wish!

  28. Quick note Craig, also loved Other Voices very hard and heavy drums. You're always.... (long long pause) WRONG. Always...... WRONG!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great review, Craig. I agree that Other Voices sounded outstanding!
I heard they did Caterpillar during soundcheck. What else did they play? Between that and Robert's comments, I hope they bust out the Top album on Sunday. It would probably be possible if they start on time...

  30. Does anyone know when they came out the stage door? Trying to decide if we have enough time to stay for that and make the last train home!

  32. I forgot to mention - the bars at the Beacon are offering a cocktail named "M", with signage featuring some lyrics. I took a picture, but have yet to upload.

    Enjoy!

  33. Oh, and I REALLY hope that someone got the end of Let's Go To Bed on video - with the stage invader kissing Robert and being snagged away by security.

    Anyone?

  34. hey craig! the guys at the upper balcony were me and my friend niko! awesome night! again in a moment!

  44. Still in awe a week later...flew in from Florida for the show that day, and flew back the next morning---exhausted, but with a smile on my face I still can't get rid of!

14th show since Prayer Tour in '89, and 1st time I've seen "Jumping Someone Else's Train".

    4th row didn't hurt, either!

I would argue that among the highlights of the night was "Other Voices"...

...but I doubt anyone would argue!!!
