After 13 long years, The Cure finally return to New Orleans to play Voodoo Experience for the first time. They are scheduled to start at 6:50pm and play until 9pm, but Pearl Jam & NIN were both allowed to go over by 10-15 minutes each, so I think we can expect The Cure to do the same. Just keep playing until they turn everything off. :)

I will do my best to post updates on Twitter, and you can follow along there, or use the widget that should show up on this page. Of course you should also check Olivier's updates at It's A Perfect Day. We'll both post as long as the signal is good, and it was fine yesterday, so should be a go for tonight.

Also wanted to mention that I spent almost all of Saturday at the Ritual stage, and the sound was fantastic! As were the video screens. So even if you're far back, you should be able to hear and see everything very clearly.

So here we go! Wish us a surprising setlist and a fantastic show! And to The Cure...Thank you so much!

  1. Would someone please record this show in either audio or video? Even if you use your I-phone. Please?

  2. I remember back in the 80's and 90's that every Cure show was recorded. What has happened in the last few years? People would give their eye teeth to have El paso, Monterrey, and the Latin shows in full - don't miss the chance tonight. And for those of you holding out for a DVD don't be holding your breath for a full show....

    1. Show didn't need saving. It was awesome and I enjoyed every second of it. Yeah, I wasn't crazy about the pop encore, but they gave me an excellent set, so let them do what they want to end it.

Ya'll know me, I would have pissed off the crowd, and ended it with Cold, Same Deep Water As You, and Faith. :)

I really like to think now that they saved this song for a show where they knew Craig was going to be at. If anything, you definitely deserved the scoop on that one Craig!

Bummer it was only 4 minutes.... perhaps 4:13 :)
It's a shame you missed out on 10:15 and KAA, but you did get Burn, and since my time in NOLA last month, I cannot hear Fascination Street without remembering my time in your home town.

  24. Just posted some thoughts about the show on Twitter, and will post my tweets here. Short version? I loved that show so much!!!

Didn't get a chance to share my thoughts on The Cure @VoodooNola last night, so I will now. I enjoyed that show so much more than El Paso.

I know how crazy that sounds, but it's true. My head says El Paso was better, longer, more surprises, but my heart says Voodoo kicked its ass!

To start with, the sound at Voodoo was fantastic! So clear that I could actually understand everything Robert said last night.

I loved that start of Shake Dog Shake, Fascination Street and a very early in the set Edge of the Deep Green Sea. Set a really good mood.

I was much more into this show at that point, than I was in El Paso. Things were just clicking, and I was loving it. Then came Burn.

We've all seen the videos, all are in awe and surprise that it was played, but none of that compares to actually being there and feeling it.

I say feeling it because that's what it was. You heard it, but those drums, that bass, they just shook you, got inside of you & took control.

But first, the disbelief in what's happening. It took me a minute to send the tweet about them playing it because I couldn't believe it.

This couldn't really be happening, could it? I'm hearing things, misidentifying a rare song or something, it isn't really Burn, is it?

Believed it, sent the tweet out, and I enjoyed the hell out of Burn! My god, I must have had the biggest Voodoo Smile during it. :)

Words truly can't describe how good Burn was! It impressed me so much! They are so good, they can make it sound like they've played it forever.

From that point on, I had the biggest smile all night & enjoyed every second of that set. I was on a high & even WN couldn't bring me down. :)

Yes, for possibly the 1st time since NYC Hard Rock Live in 99, I enjoyed Wrong Number! Shocking, isn't it? :) Thanks @reevesgabrels! :)

Will stop now, but oh man did I enjoy that set last night. And Stop Dead again! Damn, I love that song so much! Needs to stay in the set!

As I said yesterday, there's just something special about seeing The Cure in your hometown. Especially after such a long wait. It's magical!

So thank you so much to The Cure, @VoodooNola & all of you on Twitter that kept me entertained through that awful Kid Rock set. I had a blast!

Also thank you to @CultsCultsCults and @nineinchnails for helping to make this a weekend I will never forget. Memories to last a lifetime!

    1. And some additional notes:

Before Fascination Street, Robert said "This is a song about New Orleans". But unfortunately, he didn't do the traditional change of Fascination St. to Bourbon St. at the very end. Always used to love that.

Before Burn, Robert said "This is another song about New Orleans. And one we've never played before." Then he picked up that whistle and the Cure world was forever changed. Burn has now been played live. :)

There was a big mix up before Friday I'm in Love. Robert started Doing the Unstuck, but Simon (I think) started Friday, so after a few seconds, they went into Friday. Robert seemed quite amused by it, and said something like "but it's Sunday". :)
After that, Robert said something about "Maybe I can pick the next song?", and then started Unstuck again. So funny! Wish I could remember exactly what he said. Also makes me wonder if Friday was going to be played at all, and Simon forced them into it. :)

With the curfew and pulled plugs in mind, before starting the encore Robert said "It's Sunday, and the lord works in mysterious ways. So if the power goes out, its nothing to do with us"

And then as they started Boys Don't Cry at the cutoff time, "Let's see if the lord is on our side tonight". :) But I guess Robert didn't get word that they could have gone a little longer, maybe adding 10:15 and Arab, and would have been okay.

We didn't get a "Thank Q. Goodnight", but did get the "See you again". Think maybe RS was hoping to come back for one more, so skipped the goodnight, but then didn't get to come back. Really not sure about that, but I missed the traditional "goodnight".

    2. And one more thing...once again, Hot Hot Hot was one of my favorites of the night. Don't know how this has managed to become one of my live favorites, but it has.

They are playing it so well now, and has so much "funk", that you can't help get caught up in it and do the "Hey, Hey, Hey" dance moves from the video. :)

      Delete
    3. I don't mind the "See you again". That means we will see them again. :)

      Delete
    4. Before going into "Doing the Unstuck" after the mix-up Robert said "Maybe we can all march to the same beat this time."

It was funny to see Robert's reaction when he realized they were doing Friday instead of Unstuck. Best part was him grabbing the capo off the guitar (which he need for Unstuck but not Friday) and dropping it on the stage.

  25. Of course! Would never lie about a Cure setlist. They are sacred to me. :)

  26. I've never heard the band sound better. Robert especially was stellar. As with most aging singers, Robert has had a tendency to lower his melodies in parts that are sung at the higher end of his range, but last night there was much less of that. In fact, he even RAISED a line of melody above the recorded version!

That Voodoo set has reinstated a confidence that the band can continue going strong for as long as Robert wants to.

Also, Reeves is perfect in his role. Songs like "Give Me It", "Bananafishbones", and "Wrong Number" are brought to another level by his ability to match both the perfect sound and feel of the original guitar parts.

Overall, the band seemed refreshed and reinvigorated.

  27. Great set but...
Burn is a terrible, bland song from a godawful movie.
To anyone still complaining that the Cure's poppy dancey happy songs are somehow inferior to TEH DARK stuff - You are missing the point. But don't worry, you'll grow out of it.

    1. I agree it is from a "godawful movie", but I've loved the song since the first time I heard it. Now "Dredd Song" fits that description to me.

    2. I think that most Cure fans would disagree with you on at least one of those points, and I'll be one to disagree with you on both.

      Delete
    3. Well, Shawny Poo-Pants, I'm going to disagree with YOU on ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY SEVEN points!

      Whaddya think of that?

  28. I like Dredd Song... mostly for the beautiful guitar work, and i like the lyrics.

Hell, it's a Very Fine song!!!

  29. I was just thinking back to when you posted "Scream!" while Tweeting at the El Paso show, and had to clarify that you meant that Robert was screaming, not that they were playing 'The Scream'. :)

  30. Jason's drumming here brings the song to totally new heights ...

  31. So glad to have been there. I heard 8 songs live for the first time. It was an amazing show and Jesus came too. Craig was that you siting against the fence chilling during the g easy set? 6.5 hours standing in one spot....mind over bladder. Thank you the cure!
