After being spoiled with all the scoping during the NA leg of the tour, I was kinda upset I wouldn't be able to watch these ones now. Then this morning, still in bed, half-asleep, I refreshed COF main page and there was that Periscope link to the first encore (from Melbourne). ICNBTS sounds even more magical in that dreamy, half-conscious state. Heartbreaking, but so insanely beautiful. It's not the whole show anymore, but still, such a lovely start for my day. Thank you, Craig, for keeping us updated (at bedtime there's a 5 years old me moaning "Craig is always awake when The Cure is playing, why can't I?"). Thank you all, scopers (I'm so "out of this world" during Cure shows, I don't think I could be that kind and generous). Thank you, Robert & Co. <3 It's been so good to "follow" the tour, even from "miles and miles away", I hope you guys are having an amazing time too. Now, shower and bed (and 5 year old me moans). "Tomorrow must be more".
ReplyDeleteI'll be there. I can publish final setlist. no live updates sorry
ReplyDeleteI'll post the setlist when I get home, unless someone else already does it ;)
ReplyDeleteThese setlist become a bit predictable. Hope when they arrive in Europe things are going to be mixed-up a bit.
ReplyDeletethat's the problem with the modern technology we have. Imagine back in the 80s or early 90s when you didn't see each setlist in real time, all you had were the tickets you bought for your show in the near-future and you showed up the day of the show and maybe you overheard some people who are following the band, and maybe not. Anyway, imagine walking into these shows in that manner- these have been some wildly unique setlists for a Cure show in general. Yes, when you can compare them back to back and you can see the patterns, then you lose the surprise.
ReplyDeleteI guess you know. You've seen some amazing shows. I would have loved to have seen that Paris show where they did all of 4:13 Dream, and you saw Trilogy, right? I just think back to 1992, where the setlists were very predictable, but if you were at the right show the right night (like July 23rd) and it didn't matter what they played, it was all in how they played it (well, any show with Faith is gonna be good regardless). That's why a lot of US fans who say the Prayer Tour was the best tour- set-wise it wasn't at all, but the band was larger than life and you could feel it in the air.
I guess you right. We are a bit spoiled these day. And of course there will be suprises for the upcoming shows.
DeleteI think the best setlist where during the swing an dream tour.
When I went to Rotterdam back in 2000 and songs like the kiss, plainsong, snakepit where played it was incredible !
I agree with Cyril. Having the ability to view the setlists in real-time through Twitter/COF, apps such as Periscope, and sites such as setlist.fm has made it easier than ever before to examine if/when/how often any particular song has been played and compare setlists. This no doubt dramatically reduces the element of surprise (unless one consciously avoids technology). Given the sheer volume of data at one’s fingertips, expectations will inevitably mount with each passing show. It becomes easy to take genuine surprises for granted when they do come. I was able to catch the first six songs on Periscope before eventually falling asleep around 4ish...the usual bedtime, lol. Other fans have previously noted that simply viewing the setlists doesn’t do the actual performance justice, since a list of songs doesn’t quite convey the atmosphere, energy and general vibe of a show. It wasn’t until now that I finally fully comprehended what they meant.
DeleteIf I had seen only the list of the first few songs without actually viewing the performance on Periscope, I wouldn’t have been particularly impressed. However, the band seemed to be in top form last night- the lighting and sound were absolutely perfect (it’s possible I was just groggy and not observing the show with a “critical” eye/ear, but I’d prefer to give the benefit of the doubt). I’m glad the band mixed things up a bit with this show. After a certain point I assumed the Disintegration bookends would appear on all of the setlists for the Oceania segment of the tour.
My first show this year will be in Copenhagen and I won't take a look at the setlists of the 4 shows before. Maybe...
DeleteIt looks like you will be in good company. At least 3-4 fans on COF have mentioned going to the CPH show, just in the last few weeks alone. Must be something about the "other" Windy City...LOL. Good luck exercising the self-restraint to not look at the setlists :)
DeleteI was expecting Plainsong and Disintegration at least, since they have been playing those two. so it was unpredictable that they didn't play them... damn it!!! :(
ReplyDeleteAll the cure can do is approach every gig as though everyone there hasn't seen them on this tour yet. Trying to mix it all up because of the set lists are online would be bonkers !!! I personally would like to see a join the dots tour... But this isn't that and look forward to Wembley ( for two nights .... With lighter in my back pocket )
