Here's the encore part of The Cure's stage setlist. They almost fit it all in. (Thanks Ryan)
Paul K about Deep Green Sea: Reeves knocked that one out of the ballpark. I'm serious.

Two things I'm looking for, if anyone can help. Any Cure merchandise? If so, can you send photos? (And done. Thanks Fuji!)
Also, and probably the most important thing, does Simon have a new Doctor Who sticker on his bass tonight? Picture, please. :) (a repeat of A Good Man Goes To War. Thanks Trev!)
Thank you, and have a great time at the show tonight!

I'm absolutely certain that Fuji will be in Gallup Gold Class tonight, so if anyone gets a photo of his new stickers, it will be him! Sending out love to ALL my Cure peeps out there in Napa (and there are SO MANY) and to everyone watching the setlist roll in tonight.
ReplyDeleteRoadies rocking unauthorized-biography-video versions of Disintegration riffs.
ReplyDeleteSDS to start - so great
ReplyDeleteHello!!!! I second Elise - so fun to see them start with SDS! (wow, harkens back to old days, to follow a show on CoF with Rev and Elise, *sniffle*)
ReplyDelete**hugs Barb and Elise**
DeleteBefore Three... sigh: so good to see them play this again :)
ReplyDeleteCraig wrote "1st time since Oct 15th, 2004". That was my birthday. :) I'm pretty sure that was the Black Sessions in France.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed - Before Three video, please!
ReplyDeletewow... Never Enough! :) been a while for that one too?
ReplyDeleteHi Peeps! I am a bit late - we were installing a dishwasher! :) SO great to see SDS for a start! And Before Three is back - woohoo!! **HUGS ALL AROUND**
ReplyDeletegood to see them mixing it up a little

ReplyDeletePlainsong to start the Encores?
ReplyDelete**dances along to The Caterpillar**
ReplyDeleteYES!
DeleteMo - I doubt it but maybe - it is an outdoor festival after all. I think they will definitely do the Pop and Old Skool encores.
ReplyDeleteSo far, only four songs are not singles.
ReplyDeleteNot a problem. Reeves owned Wrong Number.
DeleteI am one of the rare fans who will publicly admit to loving that song when it is played live. Sorry Craig ;-p
DeleteIt was never gonna be a dark set at a Californian festival.
ReplyDeleteWrong Number will forever remind me of the downpour at ACL!
An epic moment for sure!!
DeleteThe song earned a little place in my heart with that warm memory (and by warm, I mean cold and wet, but insanely epic)
DeleteSunday always comes too late....
ReplyDeleteThe Lollapalooza '13 videos are coming in very handy for this setlist!
ReplyDeleteWant takes me back to 1996 shows every time! :)
ReplyDeleteAgreed - it is SUCH a great song!
DeleteThe 1996 tour is the only tour I have missed since 1984. It kills me that I had a family vacation planned well before they announced tour dates.
DeleteSo - 100 years to close the main set?
ReplyDeleteDisintegration?
DeleteI think it's a tossup with SDS as the opener!
DeleteOr you could go with Give Me It - haha!
DeleteNo. Come on guys. If they open with SDS, they close with either The Top or Give Me It. Lately it's been GMI.
DeleteIf they open with Plainsong, close with Disintegration.
Open with Open, close with End.
I knew Plainsong and End but I couldn't remember the closer for SDS! Forgive me oh setlist guru! hehe
DeleteI'm out of the loop. Marriage will do that to you.
DeleteHungry Ghost is one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteGlad they played some Cure punk for Craig!
ReplyDeleteI'm happier that they played it at Voodoo. Along with the supreme darkness of Burn. :)
DeleteYes!! You got an amazing show!
DeleteBurn still blows my mind...
DeleteNo word on Doctor Who stickers yet?
ReplyDeleteStill "a good man goes to war."
DeleteWow - they cut them off mid song!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is a pretty hard curfew.
ReplyDeleteAnd a pretty early one to boot! I mean - 10 pm?
DeleteWho is going to sign on to headline in the future when they're so disrespectful not to even let the band finish the song? It's not like they were doing the Fuck Robert Palmer version of A Forest.
DeleteI know it's bad - but I hope someone got video of Robert's reaction at being cut off!!
ReplyDeleteReally? Was the city going to find them for letting the band finish the song? So disrespectful.
ReplyDelete*fine*
DeleteUnfortunately, yes, festivals do get fined if they don't end when their permit says it must end. They can lose their permits or have trouble renewing them next year. And BottleRock is on shaky ground to begin with, so I understand them playing it by the rules.
DeleteBut you let the band finish their song. If they try to go on, then you stop them. If it HAD to end at exactly 10, then that needed to be relayed to the band. They've been very good about building the festival sets to end on time. Have each song timed out, grouping of songs timed out.
Ah, never mind what I just wrote. They started into WCIBY after Close To Me. Can't do that.
DeleteExactly, like it would have been maybe 2 minutes to finish the song. I get curfews in populated areas, but that seems extremely absurd.
DeleteCraig, that isn't a surprise, considering that I found this on Wikipedia regarding the first festival: "Although the festival attracted over 120,000 attendees and generated mostly positive reviews, several vendors and workers claim to have been left unpaid by organizers following the event. Estimates of well over $2.5 million for unpaid wages and services are being claimed by creditors including the City of Napa, venue provider Napa Valley Expo, a variety of security, catering and transportation companies, a local of International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and individuals."
DeleteAh, so our boys were pushing it already. Will they ever get to finish a show at a Californian festival? ;)
DeleteYes, that's what I meant about being on shaky ground. This was a new company that took over from the old one that had so many problems from last year. Read many articles about it. That's why I think they were playing it so conservative. Want to show the city they could do a good job, not repeat any of the mistakes the other guys made.
DeleteThe main speakers were cut before they even started YCIBY so don't feel too bad. You could still hear Simon's amp non-mic'd and Jason. I have a video of the tail end of it from 30ft back. Good show
Deletehere's a short vid about 20 seconds after they started the song
Deletehttp://youtu.be/4lO8IZcZDTg
Amps were still on, so folks close to stage could still hear. Rob mimed and danced for the audience to mostly finish out WCIbY.
ReplyDeleteSo how much of it did they play? Should I count it on the setlist?
DeleteList it as "Why Can't I (Finish This Song)." Also, my wife pointed out that we were standing next to Dita Von Teese during their entire set. She's very petite.
DeleteI'm going to say that this is mostly the band's fault rather than the festival. The band will know the curfew time and will have made an agreement before the show to see if they are allowed to play over that time - usually the band pays the fine but other times the festivals are not happy with that as it breaks all sorts of regulations..gives the festival a bad name etc. It isn't really disrespectful at all if you ask me as it is not The Cure's festival. Bottlerock will EASILY find headliners for next year as most bands know that they should stick to curfews. It is great that The Cure push for as much time as possible but we can't really complain when they get cut off.
ReplyDeleteIn Coachella 2009, they were cut off because they repeatedly ignored the warnings to stop. Robert even commented that they were only allowed to 'play one more song' yet they were cut off after three songs.
Beau, then why did they let McCartney play even longer than The Cure?
DeletePaul McCartney was two nights before The Cure. Logically, that tells me that the organisers had already had some poor feedback about how long McCartney was allowed to play for.
DeleteEven so, the warning was clearly given so there should have been no surprise at being cut off.
Heh, heh, the band has still got a little punk rock attitude, even when they understand the reality of the situation. The organizers were probably warned that the band likes to see how far they can push beyond curfew. And they didn't disappoint!
DeleteNote from @adfusaro about the end of the show:
ReplyDelete"shortly after WCIBY started, the sound started to fade...mic first completely, then instruments...when mic fully pulled, R made his was to front stage and began spinning and yelling "run around in circles...". R knew-said at encore start,"we need to play these fast-only have 20 min" "
Well there we go then:
DeleteLovecats: 4 Minutes
Hot Hot Hot: 3 Min, 40 Secs
Let's Go To Bed: 3 Min, 30 Secs
Freakshow: 2 Min, 40 Secs
Close to Me: 3 Min, 40 Secs
+ A Minimum of 10 seconds between each song as long as there are no tuning issues: 40 Seconds. This is most probably going to be longer.
= At least 18 Minutes 10 Seconds even before they had started WCIBY.
They were also planning on playing Boys Don't Cry after WCIBY according to the setlist they threw out to the crowd
ReplyDeleteHere's a suggestion to the band: When your sound gets cut, bust out the acoustic instruments! Let's see the organizers stop that!
ReplyDeleteWow- Before Three is such an achingly beautiful song - Always wondered why they wouldn't play it live

ReplyDeleteSo news around here is the police broke up the concert. Bottlerock is in a semi-residential part of town, the city ordinance is no amplified music after 10pm. If you don't comply they pull the plug. Or the venue would lose it's license probably. It's possible nobody told the band, or made that clear.
ReplyDeleteOr the band knows but they just push it to the hilt every time right.
ReplyDeleteNo videos of Before Three or Never Enough yet eh?
ReplyDeleteAn excellent couple of additions!
