Articles: Honolulu Pulse

The Cure play their first ever show in Hawaii tonight, and despite the ancient island gods throwing a tropical storm & an earthquake in their path, nothing was going to stop this show.
Old Flossie did prevent some fans from making the trip, and that is awful. Very sorry for everyone that had their flights canceled, and here's hoping there are more Cure shows in your future.

But the show must go on, and so it does. Doors open at 6:30 PM, Clones of the Queen start at 7:30 PM, and The Cure are scheduled to start at 8:30. Should be around 3 hours tonight.

Going to be a late one for many of us. US start times are 2:30 AM eastern, 1:30 AM central, 12:30 AM mountain, and 11:30 PM pacific. If you're not sure of the start time in your area, just use the clock over on the right or check here.

No webcasts, obviously, unless a fan wants to do a streamcast? If so, please let me know.

If anyone is going to the show and wouldn't mind helping me with the live setlist reports, photos, etc. (via Twitter, email, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.), please let me know. Olivier will be doing updates here, but with the usual problems of batteries dying, and lack of cell connections, we'll take all the help we can get.

    2. It is lovely, but I think they usually reserve it for outdoor shows. It was nice to hope for a second though.

    3. I think that it blows that an iPhone battery is such a pain to switch out. I can pop out one and put in another in 5-10 seconds in my LG EnV3. Ah, the advantage of having a non-smartphone.

  22. As much as a love the Cure, I do agree about the comments earlier about them erasing Bloodflowers and 4:13 Dream and countless other works, they tour frequently enough that they do need to become a nostalgia act, which their setlist tends towards, I want some new adventures in their playlists

    1. There are so many beautiful songs in their most underrated album: jupiter crash, treasure, bare, out of this world, there is no if, bloodflowers, labirinth, before three, lost, the promise, underneath, the dream...

  37. as much as i love the cure, these set lists are all starting to be too much the same.

the plainsong/open start to the sets is becoming stale.

i'd really like to see something vastly different than the shows played in the past 10 years.

  39. Aloha everyone! Fantastic show last night! Was great to meet so many Cure fans from around the world, and very cool meeting the band for a few fleeting moments! Great memories all around! Last night, my goal was to just be in the moment, no camera, no phone, no video, just be in the moment! I would say I did pretty well, with the exception of maybe a dozen pics towards the end during a 10 min period. Well, might add more later!

  40. great show from hawaii and very cool to hear live. many thanks to the streamer[s] and photographers.

thinking about some recent comments on the setlists: my main critique over the years has been the lack of improvising on the fly. with reeves on board now, they really have the potential to jam out, improvise, and extend some of the hits that always appear on the setlists. really...they are incredible musicians and play very tight together, but every time i've seen them or hear them through webcasts/bootlegs, the songs are played so perfectly and therefore predictable [very much as if i was hearing it from the album]. occasionally they change up "a forest" or "faith". changing the lineup a couple times between 2005 and 2011 was very welcoming to me. we had the chance to hear their songs for the 1st time very differently. don't get me wrong: i would jump on any opportunity to see/hear them play live. among the best live bands ever!

i think they are doing a great job lately for festival/first time gigs with a rich, solid set of songs showcasing their signature sounds. no matter what they play, a cure fan young or old can't be disappointed.

  41. I think it's a shame that some albums aren't being represented at all, but you have to respect the band's desire to play whatever excites them for whatever reason. There was a patch (I think) where Robert pretty much disowned Wish. All along I/we were wishing (pun partially intended) that he'd realise how amazing most of Wish is and be proud of it. More than anything, I'd love to hear some new material of a real return-to-form quality. For me, the live versions of Bananafishbones and Wrong Number are a glimpse of how twisted and electric an album with Reeves could be.

  42. Still don't understand why The End Of The World gets any stage time though. Awful!

    ReplyDelete
  43. These songs are desperately missing from their setlist.

    Out of this World
    Underneath the Stars
    Lost
    The only one
    Watching me Fall
    There is no if
    Taking off
    Alt. End
    The Reasons Why
    Freakshow
    The scream
    The promise
    the 13th!

Songs that should be retired from setlist

From the edge of the deep green sea
    Hungry Ghost
    Push
    Tape/Open
    End
    Love Song
    The Walk
    Play for Today
    Let's go to Bed
    10:15 saturday night
    killing an arab

  44. @james: i agree with "end of the world" being played all too much with others from that album being just as good if not better...such as "alt.end"...but robert would have to sing, "7 billion beautiful faces" now.

@mattcure: the songs you mentioned that should be added: YES!, but those are all more recent tunes, so what about old ones not getting played? the songs you mentioned that should be retired: NO WAY!! those are all older "classic cure" [except "hungry ghost"]. there's no way robert will not retire "lovesong", "the walk", "lgtb", "10:15...", & "killing..." ...might as well not have a final encore.

i think the overall consensus among fans is for them to dig deeper and simply change it up more often.

BUT the rumors of new "reflections" with the top, head on the door, and KISS MEEEEE!. in my opinion, those are the albums to see the band play live. those albums were from their most significant transitional period and capture so much of their vast array of styles and musical abilities and genius...from the dark to the pop.

    onto montreal and chicago!
