  2. I agree!! Why does it matter that he's turning 50 next year? So What!!! I hate the fact that they have to rub it in that he's older. Doesn't mean he's wash up like a lot of other musicians. I think the songs are really good!!

  4. I think they must have lots of these types of bits laying around to use when The Cure releases something. King of Pain? roffle!
No one ever seems to mention age when referring to the Pixies, U2, REM, Depeche Mode or any other of their peers who are still putting out albums..is it the hair?

  5. I wouldn't call that paragraph a review...

  6. I find it odd that a lot of reviews seem to have not listened to the album at all. As if it showed up they read the track listing and the lyrics and then wrote something. What also bugs be about shit reviews and or lazy ones is the attack on a band having a sound. The Cure sounds too much like The Cure.....well why is that bad. Should they have gone the way of Tool trying to be a more drugged version of King Crimson....its just crappy when people who get payed to be in the position their in, phone it in on a constant basis.

  7. That's all they have to say? Why waste the time writing that up if your not going to say much about the album and put down Robert for being close to fifty. Fifty is the new thirty now!

  8. tch, I could write a better review with my butt. I swear, some of the recent reviews I've seen are just so ridiculously banal...
Well, at least the album itself is getting high marks for the most part.
I'm looking forward to the reviews from ACTUAL Cure fans. <3

  9. EW has NEVER been fair to The Cure. I've had a subscription since issue #1 back in the early 90s and for some reason they always slam The Cure yet give props to absolute crap.

  10. helsa--I agree, reading reviews from Cure Fans is way better then some crummy magazine's lame ass review!

  11. This one doesn't even look finished. Like MB said, they basically listened to the first three songs and wrote this crap. :/ And no, I don't say that because it's a negative review, but because as a review it's crap.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It is a shitty review, but how can a 'B' be considered negative?

Everyone is giving the album 7 and 8!!! if they have listened to it is another story...

  13. EW reviews are about as worthless as Rolling Stone reviews. Still more interested in what Pitchfork will say. Hopefully they'll at least listen to the entire record before writing their review, good or bad.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I care more about Rolling Stone than Pitchfork. Eck. They're both terrible, but at least there's journalism in Rolling Stone.

  17. Yikes! I'm afraid to see how y'all would react if they gave the new album a "C" or lower. :)

  18. Onni: Old news, posted that this morning. : )

  19. EW could give the album a D or F for all I care... but it needs to JUSTIFY the grade. slapdash reviews like that are just hollow and pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  20. and helsa you are such a talented scribe you sure could write a better review with your butt :-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Does anybody know whether the new album will be available for download on iTunes? I don't see it listed. Thanks.

  22. I love dodgy reviews for my favourite band. Its always been like that and I wouldn't have it any other way!!!

Gosh, less than 2 days to go!!

    *dizzy spell*

  23. Weird. I've been going through the archives and they've given no grade or a B to every album since Wish.

They actually gave Wish a hefty review and not just one little paragraph:
    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,310277,00.html

    ReplyDelete
  24. So you folks don't have to comb the archives, here's the very nice review for "Bloodflowers":
    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,275437,00.html

    Wild Mood Swings (eech!)
    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,292459,00.html

    Join the Dots:
    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,597911,00.html

    The lousy 2004 album:
    http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,659948,00.html

So, based on their track record of giving The Cure's best album ("Wish") and worst albums (WMS, The Cure, etc) the same grade, I have no idea what to expect.

  25. From all the reviews i read, I did not see a 10/10 or an A or something that might said it's perfect and fantastic.

I did not listen to Rome because I prefer to wait the good sound of the album; But i'm scared.

And yes I listen to wht reviews said because there are professionnals in music and they are much more OBJECTIVE than us here, who WANT it to be a good album.
    But it's obvious too that some reviews did not listen to the whole albums or are not used to review the cure;

Did you hear a very very very good review somewhere ?

  27. D: Yes, it will be on iTunes next week.

  28. Olive,

Not to be rude...but you are very naive about Music Journalism...

The album is fantastic. Take it from a fan that is very critical of The Cure. I'd be the first to say if this album shit the bed.

  29. I know I shouldn't put too much store
by what RS has said in past interviews...but he did say he didn't want to be in the cure post-50.

makes me think that 2009, which looks like it'll be a great year with 4:13 pt2, reissues and 30th anniversary documentary, might also see the cure bow out?

  30. Mike

I hope you're right and i will wait to hear to make my own point of view

  32. Problem is Rolling Stone has absolutely no taste in music whatsoever. While Pitchfork may be pretentious hipster garbage, they do in fact recommend some very excellent music, and are also big fans of the Cure.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dan - Don't pay ANY attention to what Robert has said...ever! In 1985, he scoffed at suggestions of the Cure continuing post-30 yrs old. Back then though, I think he genuinely didn't think that he'd still be around to make the choice in 5 or 20 years time.
I think The Cure still has plenty of fire left to burn and will be with us for much longer to come *the cure in their 60's is a surreal thought*.....so I'd say their going nowhere, and no, their not already there.

  34. random comment- hmv.uk sent me the official cd and vinyl today . woohoo

  35. HOLY SHIT...the album is sooo good!!!

yeah i know i said it like, 20 posts ago, but i think i'm just going to pop on here every so often just to say it. :D

  36. I DON'T WANNA WAIT 5 DAYS I WANT IT NOW DANG IT I WANT TO RIP OFF THE PLASTIC WRAPPING AND SMELL THE FRESHNESS OF THE LINER NOTES AND LOOK AT THE ARTWORK AND POP THE CD IN AND BLAST IT AND BE AWESTRUCK BY ITS AWESOMENESS!!!!

Is that really so much to ask?

    ReplyDelete
  37. also, as much as i love the cure, why does the idea of the sight of robert and whatever band he may have put together playing live at 60 frighten me slightly?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Todd: I wanna smell the freshness too! But hang in there, you will be rewarded!

MB: that doesn't frighten me at all! :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. the cure is timeless

references to age are beyond inane

the cure preceded all and will succeed all

the cure cannot be caged in any finite way...

  41. ...unless they were in a celebrity deathmatch wrestling event.

    ReplyDelete
  42. OK, rare that I comment around here, but I think what most people aren't thinking about is that each critic out there probably receives 40-50 (or more) albums a week, so it's a bit hard to give most albums more than a quick listen before writing a review. And I'm sure most people who would actually buy a Cure album wouldn't be looking for the official seal of approval from EW or Rolling Stone anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  43. the album is out here in italy: listened to it a couple of times...and ITS VERY GOOD!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. right here, hynreck:

"On the line no sound but my words
Must be night birds on the wire again
In the silence for a second
I am sure I hear them laughing then"

robert's poetry is on in full force. plus the guitar lines are freaking phenomenal.

    ReplyDelete
  45. the reasons why? ridiculously good.
    RIDICULOUSLY GOOD :@

    ReplyDelete
  46. That bass line is just killer. What a sound, it's unreal.
And yea, overall, on 4:13, Robert's poetry's very strong.
Haven't been that strong since Wild Mood Swings, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  47. honestly, i wasn't sure robert could write a decent song anymore. sorry to say. but his words on this album? GENIUS. INSPIRED. i hope he didn't break into that steel box of his for ideas...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I just read a little write up in RollingStone about 4:13 Dream. They gave it 3.5 stars.

Maybe the Cure will be on the cover for once?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Underneath The Stars is probably the best song the band has recorded since Wish.

    ReplyDelete
  50. zeph: no probably about it. it absolutely it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. So many songs on 4:13 Dream we might never hear live again if Porl left the band. He's the only one with the technical chops to play those intricate guitar riffs in TRSW.

Any guitarists here figure out any tabs yet?

    ReplyDelete
  52. For me, UTS is the best song the Cure have done EVER.

Heh, they're the Alpha and the Omega... or something...! There is a timelessness to them though, it's kinda crazy.

I'm still waiting for my CD!!! So much agony... my butt can hardly withstand the anticipation! Or my ears for that matter. I am preparing to be thoroughly and proverbially boned by this album.

HA! I've never heard that expression before....

  54. g, maybe you can ask craig if he will put out a call for guitar tabs for you. (although you are more than capable to figure out a few yourself).
