Lol and Michael interview

As mentioned a few months ago, Lol Tolhurst and Michael Dempsey taped a tv appearance on May 6th, for a tv show called Focus In The Mix. And now, I've posted video clips from the show on Vimeo. If you'd rather just download them, here you go. (Thanks to Maria for the files!)
Update: My original Vimeo account with the files has been removed, but you can still watch it on YouTube - Part 1 / Part 2. (Thanks notherbob)

And if you missed it below, I posted a photo of the Lol interview from Mojo. (Thanks Jean-Francois)

  1. Thanks for posting this.

The questions asked through Myspace were dumb as hell. I swear most people who asked them stuff still thought Lol was an active member of the band.

  4. That woman was embarrassing to watch, although Michael + Lol handled her well. Thought I'd puke if I had to hear her say "MySpacers" one more time.

  5. Well, that was something else!

This may tick some people here off, but gotta get it off my chest...

"Lol tell our viewers about another of your great contributions to The Cure, like the song 'Shiver & Shake'?"

"And how you contributed to the writing of the songs on the greatest Cure album of all: Disintegration, which you were credited for?"

"Lol tell us about your amazing contribution to The Cure as keyboard player, and about Robert having Porl play a 2nd keyboard live in the mid 80's and then hire Rodger to play keyboards on KM,KM,KM, thereafter"? "What was that all about?" Hmmm Symphony orchestras only have 1 keyboard player ...

Shameful, is all I can say about Lol and his exploitation of The Cure name and accomplishments. The only thing worse than the guy's drumming was his keyboarding. I guess people love phony nostalgia and revisionist history BS. To believe that he was anything more than a very minor bit player in the music created by The Cure is pure fantasy. It's on the public record that he was drunk and pretty much comatose for KMKMKM and then tossed during Disintegration; and could never play more than a few notes on the keyboards. Robert is just too decent of a guy to say anything now(like the truth) about it, which is for the best as the past is the past.

  6. Thanks for posting the video. LOL & Michael were great despite the dippy woman who was interviewing them. Is she really a Cure Fan???

I would say that's very harsh and undeserved..

  8. I never knew Dempsey was such a twat. Very arrogant and conceited and very condesending towards Lol...(let me translate that into English for Lol!?) but then Lol was about as coherent as a block of cheese....

It's no wonder both are no longer part of The Cure.

sad to see them trying to capitalise on past glories

And that woman was an idiot

  9. hey, a block of cheese can be very coherent if you allow it to be...

  10. Remember the intro to SHOW where they show people in the crowd. Was that Lol about 3mins 15secs in?

  11. OMG... that was excruciating! I mean... WTF?? It was embarrassing for all of them. I couldn't watch the whole thing. *brr*

Apparently Robert doesn't feel that way and his contribution to The Cure may not be exactly equivalent to his technical prowess on drums and keyboards.

"sad to see them trying to capitalise on past glories"

Maybe they're just doing the best they can when they got called in to do an interview. I still find these videos captivating no matter what. Wouldn't mind seeing Robert, Lol, and Michael play together again.

Haha damn, Keith, watch your words:
maybe you're the one who's a twat and condescending.

Lot of people really have a lack of empathy here.
    What would you do

They just thought some fans might be glad to hear some more rare details the other Cure members might have forgotten having many other souvenirs to remember.

They're not making money on this. Just getting the little attention they deserve, as it is the first time in 30 years !!

I thought Cure fans used to be the nicest fans
(that was when they had no internet blogs and forums to express themselves probably)

  14. Just finished watching it and found it very interesting. It's the first time I've got to see Michael Dempsey talking. I don't think he was being condescending. I don't think they even asked to go on the show so they could talk about how great they were. I think they were asked to go on and obliged. I like how Michael never inflated his importance and never brought up anything about his contribution to the band but that he also mentioned liking Seventeen Seconds and his connection to the song Cut Here. Still want to see Robert, Laurence, and Michael playing together again. Good to know that Michael's still in touch with Robert, Simon, and Porl. Looking forward to the 30th Anniversary DVD.

  15. That was a weird interview--it was fun to get a little bit of a fun view into the very early days of The Cure. I agree that most of the questions from "MySpacers" were on the stupid end. Questions directed at Lol and Michael relating to the more recent years of the band could have been a bit more awkward if Lol and Michael had allowed them to be.

  16. so does CCat.

me no likey slow cure news daze.

  17. we need a sample of an unheard track up on the main site - just posted same message there - come on gang let's apply a little COF pressure!

  18. Keith and Rob, I didn't see any capitalization on past glories there, and when I talked with Lol personally after a show in 2004, he actually DOWNPLAYED his time in the band. There's nothing wrong with him acknowledging his time in The Cure, which is all that he's done. Lol's admitted many times that he messed up, and deserved to find himself out of the band. However, he cleaned up his act a long time ago, and his stuff with Presence and Levinhurst is actually quite good. Check it out sometime.

  20. why are FS and TOO vids no longer available? Is this TMU meddling again??? WTF

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, Universal doesn't want the audio up. Why? I thought the Mix 13s were not going to be on the album? And why only TOO and FS? Weird. Anyway, I've agreed to mute the audio, so they should return soon.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And now Universal has retracted their claims, and the videos have been restored. But the audio for TOO is missing. TMU are weird!

  23. And the audio for FS has been removed, too. WTF?
