00:56 - David: BDC, last song. Crowd singing louder and louder ! Roger concentrate on tambourine. See you again, he said!

00:51 - David: CTM, crowd completly crazy ! Bob dancing like a fool with a sort of drunk Pulp Fiction choregraphy. LGTB ! Not yet, honey. WCIBY? Because nobody can, Robert! Smiling to the attendance while Roger jumping on his keys!

00:42 - David: Extra time !!! Lovecats are grey and pink, and red and blue... We're the Curecats, let's go ! A guy caught on stage. Eden Gallup on the side of the stage

00:34 - David: Fight. Hard enough for the first time on this tour. Sometimes it's hard just to breathe but on such a night, we 're screaming and fighting to keep them on  stage!!!

00:33 - David: Simon smiling at the end of The Kiss. Fantastic job, all of them.
IOTWCS, oriental mood on Carhaix. Why did I think I shouldn't come ? A small trip to India for a few hours of train. Placebo, Deftones... born inside this song like Cranes in The Top. Thousands of bands are proud of being Cure addicts, tonight like never before. Say it to those bastards of Rolling Stone who never gave The Cure a cover. They should hear Mr O'Donnell.

00:22 - David: Jason was smiling at the end of End, seemed to enjoy like ever. The Kiss !!! Robert having fun then the thunder is coming, taking our necks, keys climbing our stomachs. This is the best band in the world !!!!!!!!!!

00:11 - David: End ! Simon kicks ass !!! We can't stop loving him, can we South America ?!!! Can we, South Americaaaa ?!!!!!!!

00:07 - David: One Hundred Years! Much more powerful than at Paleo. Crowd singing the lyrics !

00:03 - David: THG, this one is for you, Craig ! And it fucking rocks on this tour with great keys !
WN bursting everything. Robert smiling like a child when hearing Reeves 's lines. Allo ?!  Allo ?!!! Alllooo ?!!!!! Crowd totally into it.

23:57 - David: Want. Simon's taking the power, almost on his knees in front of Jason. Robert yelling so loooonnnnnng. Reeves back like hell. Roger smashing his keys. Pictures on the screen at the back of the stage are incredible. Robert's face 6 meters high. Wonderful job by the cameramen.

23:42 - David: FTEOTDGS, the best live version I've heard. Putting thousands of hands in the sky !
TRUST very emotional. Some people crying around me... we're so lucky to have met these guys.

23:39 - David: First mobile out of breath in a few seconds. Will try with the other(s), my Iphone first. JLH, crowd knows words by heart of course. What a moving night we're getting before the break. The Cure love France and show it ! Sorry Spain and Italy, our soccer team sucks but The Cure is ours !!!
IBD ! A pogo close to us, it's The Cure in Orange in Britany. France discovered that this band existed with that song, even if die hard fans may say they already did. But when we were 12, we would listen to Nikka Costa and Blondie. Sorry I got to vomit, but it's true I did !

23:38 - David: Push, just perfect. Crowd singing the intro gogogo before Robert, watching us close to us ! And when starting singing, crowd totally mad and singing louder.

23:21 - David: Lullaby, strong bass line, nice keyboards. Never seen a man imitating a spider so bad, very funny. The CateCateCateCaterpillar girl ! And ou ouh ou ou with the crowd, louder this time. But still don't know how to spell it ! I fly away from me.....eeeeee

23:11 - David: POY ! Sound is just perfect, very well balanced. 6 sting bass, the most amazing and symbolic Cure sound.

23:01 - David: Bananarmonica !! Ou ou ouh hou, how do you spell ou ou ouhou ?! English is so far from French. Robert dancing like a puppet on stage. It's a fucking rock version tonight, Reeves bursting it.

23:00 - David: Rythmic lines and Rob guitar so powerful on A Forest, our bodys are vibrating ! One of the favorite Cure songs for french public.

2:56 - David: A Forest so soon, fantastic. Crowd mezmerized and earger to hear it once again and again and again and again and again and again !!!

22:54 - David: PFT ! French crowd is the best singer crowd in the world. Sorry, tonight I'm a European French bastard again.

22:50 - David: FIMIL, dancing like hell on the right day at once ! DTU, let's get happy, Cure fucking fans of the world, like we do here !

22:40 - David: Lovesong, beautiful, crowd mouths open. SWIMD, rock comes back ! 3 screens on back and sides of the stage. Really professional images. The Walk, we sing along and dance. The End Of The World, crowd singing too !! Very powerful, amazing. Mint Car, crowd fucking into it. Jason has plenty of hearts designed on his arms. Fans attack ?

20:29 - David: Big and deep stage, good sound even if I really hate Thomas Dutronc on stage right now in his encore. We will get to reach Antoinette, Nico and Fred. Yeah I see them 15 meters on the left and in front of us, themselves in front of Simon. Venue already over packed. Bigger audience than our previous dates. Heard that they sold out tonight but not official.

20:13 - David: Arrived at the 7th row with Kathy, Karine, Pierre, Alexis and Christophe. Valérie and Mathieu stayed in the back. Trying to reach Antoinette, Nico, Marcus and maybe Frédéric on the second row in front of Robert. Venue is cool, 50,000 expected attendees for a 53,000 capacity. May sell out during the afternoon. Too small glasses of beer but we drank many ! I noticed the two buses we'd seen getting out of the Paleo : The Cure probably traveled with them to reach Britany. Sunny, good vibes... lots of Cure fans, from France essentially

The final show before the month long break, and back to a longer set. The Cure are scheduled to play from 22:05 - 00:35. In the US, that's a start time of 4:05pm eastern, 3:05pm central, 2:05pm mountain, 1:05pm pacific.

There should be a live webcast from the show at Direct Star (not available outside of France?) and ARTE Live Web (should be available to everyone).
Update: It looks like it will only be an hour, once again. :(

Note: Updates might be sporadic at times. Nasty storms and major flooding right now in New Orleans. :( Also, major connection troubles at the show tonight. David is doing his best to get the info out to us.

If you wouldn't mind helping me with the live setlist and reports, please contact me at craigatcof(at)gmail(dot)com or @CraigatCoF on Twitter. So far, WhatsApp has worked the best for reports, and if you have a smartphone, this is highly recommended, but email, Twitter, Facebook, and texts are also welcome. Thanks!

    2. Lemon Lies, you should read what this lady wrote on the Paleo thread and you'll understand. Jason sucks, full stop.
Jason, you rock !!! And I loved seeing you smiling all alone behind your drums yesterday... Never seen you so at ease and enjoying.

      Delete
    3. I would love to see this lady's musical credentials. I wonder, was she sitting there with a metronome counting every beat, ready to pounce as soon as he played some slight variation to the album version?!

Agreed! Jason rocks. It was great to see hom enjoying himself last night. I wish they would interview him and the rest of the band - would love to hear what they think about this tour.

      Delete
    4. At the beginning of the concert, we all could see that Jason was apart while the other guys where chatting and laughing...
he was nervous as hell and he always looks uncomfortable and Sofia is right! he is not playing with the same vibe as in the first shows of the current tour. Is it that you can't see that or that you don't want to see that.

      Delete
    5. You would probably be nervous and uncomfortable if your 'fans' kept ripping you to pieces every time you played. Nonetheless, that clip was no more than a few seconds long - how you could possibly read anything into that, I'm not sure. What exactly do you mean by the same 'vibe'?

      Delete
    6. Attending the concert was the only way to know. Jason is often nervous but he can be proud of what he does. Yesterday he really enjoyed the gig and we were only 50,000 people to see it but the lady drummer.

      Delete
    7. Despite I hated Jason's playing in the past tours, I was really enjoying most of his playing in the first two or three shows of this summer. BUT now he is not playing in the same level and I hear he is playing like he did in the past. Which is a bad thing.
Sure Jason can hit the snare drum to make the other guys know where the beat is but besides that,he is not doing nothing interesting to win my appreciation. The day he puts something good like Lol,Andy &Boris did I will think about it.

      Delete
    8. Of course he's not - he's playing patterns from songs which he didn't write, at festivals which don't require any originality or creativity. It's not a Cure show - people expect to hear the studio version of a song. I'm not sure what you expect from him anyway - he can't suddenly veer off on some wild tangent of experimental drumming during FIIL. If he did, you'd probably be criticising him for that as well! Tell me - why is the criticism always directed at one person? Where is the criticism of Robert, when he f*cks his part up, which he occasionally does, or forgets the words, which he often does. Where is the criticism of any of the other members of the band? If you really do feel a desperate need to criticise - please distribute your criticism more evenly amongst band members!

    9. Lemon: one knows when a drummer or any musician is doing his job or not. A perfect example is Reeves. He learned the songs fast (reminds me of Boris). Go and watch him playing perfect musical tasteful harmonics in Doing the unstuck. Hear his version of FTEOTDGS! he has perfect sound and control over his delay. The guy is a fine musician. On the other hand Jason made errors when he joined the band, then he continued doing them years later (playing the intro of just like heaven at the beginning of in between days... then a huge mistake in A boy I never knew in Germany, and many many others). He even changed IBD "classic" drumfills for some others that don't sound good. Then he began playing the fast bass drum beats of Let's go to bed, disintegration, WCIBY and a couple more, for patters that were much more easy to play!
You say that he is playing festivals, so he doesn't need to be creative? c'mon! Compare Push in the first concerts and how he is playing it now! same thing with Bananafishbones. the latest version is terrible bad! he can't even play the cymbals intro of To wish impossible things!!
Robert's mistakes? well, I love Robert because he composed masterpieces and if he fails two, three or 10 times during a tour, I can totally forgive him even if I get a little angry for spoiling a song (like in TSDWAY).
But Jason is different.. he hasn't done anything really memorable for the band and even when he plays something catchy and good in STUDIO, he doesn't play it LIVE! that is a total shame and makes me think that technology is doing it's part too.
I don't criticise Jason just because he is not Boris or Andy or Lol. I criticize him because of what he has brought to the band which is almost nothing. In 1996 WMS was released... didnt hate the album but didn't like it much either. I noticed the lack of a good drum pattern but I thought I will give the new drummer a change and I was so excited to hear the new album (Bloodflowers) but I was dissapointed. Drum patterns full of drum machines and tapes and unnatural sounds. Since the first song what we can hear is a loop from a drum machine that runs along with the drums the entire song. He couldn't come up with anything really memorable for that album.. then in 2004 he did lots of things playing hard and with lots of drums like never before in Cure history (maybe in Pornography but that is different), but then, many of the good drum/tom rolls weren't played live! what a shame! in that year the cymbal bashing began too and that was something most people hated to death! his lack of technique or let's say, his lack of musical taste for playing with The Cure was more evident during this period. His patterns and drum fills were out of place! if it were for him he would happily play a latin cha-cha fill in KAA! AND THE TUPPERWARE DRUM SOUND BEGAN.
Then 2008, again he did some good patterns in the bass drum but Jason didn't play them live in Rome. Cymbal bashing continued and the backing tapes with a lot of percussion sounds were more evident.
Jason doesn't play the percussion in To wish impossible things, plainsong, tsdway, and many others..all of these sounds are recorded previously and he just plays the snare, the bass drum and the cymbals. Easy uh?
Again, I don't criticize him because he is not Boris. I criticize him because of his little contribution to the band.
I have recentely learned that Jason Cooper wasn't in Robert's list of preferred drummers but the producer of WMS recommended him. So please, dont' say I expect him to play 100% like in the record. NO! but he has to respect the DISTINCTIVE parts and not change them for dull or easy ones.

    10. Your post is total non sense and oriented. Poor contribution? Are u sure it's your point? You just live in the past like pther dusty fans who're still waiting for the cold trilogy-part IV or The Foot On The Wall.

      Delete
    11. Oh David...that comment made me spit my tea out with laughter this morning! The Foot on the Wall...Haha!! See now this thread is being taken over by the dinosaurs so I'm reluctant to keep perpetuating it by replying, but the previous comment was so stupendously ridiculous that I feel obliged to. I take it you've actually listened to their stuff from the 80's, as that appears to be where you're stuck musically, but if so, you'll detect the use of drum machines on some tracks! They also use synthesisers-do you object to those as well?! As for Lol-seriously?? He could barely play! Andy?! His contribution was minimal! Also, I'm not sure why you would attribute the success of failure of an album to one member? I mean firstly, it's purely subjective-some people here love Bloodflowers, but secondly, how do you know what his creative input was? Were you there in the studio at the time? I would ask again, why your criticism isn't directed at RS. Some of his lyrics are pretty shaky on occasion. In fact, there are many criticisms I could direct at RS of late, however, I don't feel the need, as to me, they're 1000 times better than any other band on the planet, and I would rather support them to ensure that they are still in existence, than use message boards to dish out nonsensical criticisms to one particular band member. How the hell you could know what RS wanted, I'm not sure! Are you bosom buddies? If so, I'd love his email address. Seriously though-if you really do profess to like this band, just sit back and enjoy the music rather than dissecting it, and microanalysing every last detail.

    13. Lemon Lies,
The main reason that brought me to The Cure was their minimalism, something that came out of the punk movement. This idea that someone could play music without being a melomane. But the interesting think was that Robert and a few others wanted to do it in a more 'serious' way. His cultural background allowed him to keep the punk spirit but feeding it with litterature, cinema as much as his own experience. As time went buy, the work evolved a lot and I personnaly think that it also has to do with the line up changes. I'm often criticized because I love everything in The Cure or almost everything. I tried to explain why in my first book but some don't get the point : I admire the fact they took some risks and proposed so different songs, albums, sounds.... exploring many many fields. At the same time arts don't have to be 'intectualized' too much. It's more about emotions. That's the reason I'll aways be more into feelings, the atmosphere than into technical aspects. But I can see how the overall level of The Cure members has evolved. And Jason is the best drummer they've had. Boris was fantastic too and his play would have elevated, for sure. But attending so many gigs this summer makes me figure out how good this 5 piece can be. High above what I can hear elsewhere. The Foot On The Wall is not what I'm waiting for even if I enjoy hearing 'Push' and 'The Blood' so much.
      Where are you from ?

    14. JC is the best Cure drummer but he:

      1. changed the very fast 16th bass drum beats in Lets go to bed for slower 8th notes (easy to be played)
      2. changed the 16th bass drum notes for slow 8th ones in Disintegration
      3. he used to -and sometimes he still does- open the hi-hat whenever he hit the snare drum? that is something that newbies tend to do and any drummer can confirm this.
      4. In the first years with the band, Robert usually said things like "jason is getting better", "jason is playing better now". It's clear that JC wasn't playing right and RS had to defend him.
      5. hasn't catch the attention of any musician's magazine and after 17 years with The Cure he hasn't had an interview yet?
      6. can't play all the percussion sounds live and relies in the backing tapes.
      7. can't keep the steady bass drum beat required for playing punkish songs like KAA and 10:15.
      8. there are more and more facts but i'm too tired to type now.

I'd like to give Steve Lyon a good kick in his nuts!

  50. today (saturday) there was a report in the evening news of french tv France 2 about the festival and how it is important for the local economy, and they explained as well that they managed to attract big acts. And to illustrate that, they showed a few seconds of The cure's show to end the report. Nice.

  51. I'm enjoying this summer tour because I notice that he-who-should-not-be-named is playing a tad better than before and Gabrels is doing wonderful making me almost forget Pearl.

When Pearl told Robert he was leaving the band, his first idea was to make an audition to find a replacement but then he remembered 1995 and didn't want any young guy, and decided to call Gabrels which has the same influences as him. Excellent decision and it shows that Robert has learned from the past.

  52. Review from David Fargier:

I wasn't really fond of the idea I would go to the Vieilles Charrues. By the way I had seen 6 Cure concerts this summer and Brittany is not a region I appreciate that much. This festival has a so so reputation. Some say it's the best place to party, others that it's just a gigantic meeting of drunk bears.

But I changed my mind just before the Paleo. This tour is so brilliant and people I'm traveling with are so cool that I couldn't miss the opportunity to attend one more gig before the break.

Got my car from Geneva to Lyon (forgetting my shoes at the hotel made me arrive in Guingamp, 10 •C, in slaps... an south east idiot in Britany, do you get the image ?), took a train for 6 hours, had a bit of rest and once again, the D day. I bought some shoes as Brittany nights are really cold (my friend Frédéric who had to wait for his train outside all night long can witness about that !) before Antoinette and Nico arrived by car from Paris. After a few coffees and junk food (it lasted one month having strange food with tons of beers and very few hours sleeping... we look like zombies with pale faces in Cure t-shirts), we reached the festival venue.

What a good surprise ! Very nice place, a bit in the same spirit and configuration than the Paleo, smiley and partying people, good REAL food but very-very-tiny-too-tiny glasses of beer and cider. Anyway I was in Heaven as I managed to find everyone I was hoping to see : Antoinette, Nico, Frédéric, Christophe & Valérie and their son Mathieu and their friends Olivier & his brother, Alexis, Pierre (who asked Robert about the 'next 3' during the press conference) and his girlfriend Nathalie, Kathy and Karine, our German mate Marcus and his friend. I even recognise and cheered Antti, the famous Scandinavian CoF contributor. All those people made my day as much as The Cure concert itself. We also had the great pleasure to meet lovely french fans, among them Aurelia and Lisa.

I wish all my french Cure friends (I take the opportunity of my last review to cheer them all : lord Craig Parker, Jenny, Sandrine, Gilles, the 2 sweeties, Alain, Julie, Mauro, William, Jérôme, Rodolphe, Sébastien B., Stéphane A., Stéphanie, Pascaline, José, Nicolas J., Gaelle, Jean-Christophe Bétrisey who wrote the second Cure book with me and who I missed at Paleo, Pascal Milette who designed the first one) and European ones we met during the SummerCure (hello Heikee, Thomas, Katrin, Nancy, Maurizio, Grégor, Giorgia, Marcel, Stefano, Fabio... I love you all !) would have been there for this wonderful moment.

We drank a few beers, bought Cure t-shirts, noticed the 2 grey buses that probably brought the boys from Switzerland and quickly ran in front of the stage. The venue was already packed but not completely during Thomas Dutronc, even if we didn't manage to go as further as we wanted during his terrible set (could someone ask him to stop music, please ?!!).

I had read on the internet that only 3,000 tickets were still available in the morning that sold out very quickly before the gates opening. 53,000 paying attendees and about 10,000 more (organisation, journalists...) were there to see if The Cure still had the flame alive. Lots of important french media (TVs, newspapers, photographers...) were there for a bigger coverage than for the Eurokéennes. Pierre who managed to get an accreditation, told us that there could be a press conference with Robert, so lots of regional and national media wanted to be there.

    1. The boys got on stage in due time and we quickly understood it would be a great show. Everybody seemed in good mood and shape, so they provided a fantastic set with a bit of extra time regarding the scheduled 2h30. Not a single track was weak or at least a bit behind. The sound was just perfect and probably one of the most balanced of the tour, the stage beautiful and the images showed on 3 big screens in the back and sides of the stage were incredible. I hope that this concert would be used for a dvd as the job was really professional and impressive with lots of smart points of view and sophisticated effects.

The main set, the encores... we loved everything and the public stayed into it all along with lots of youngsters surprised by such a dynamic and powerful band. Almost as noisy, clapping, singing and dancing as at the Paleo. Madness was taking the attendees (a guy succeeded in jumping
on stage for 2 seconds before Michael caught him with safety staff help) and the boys themselves. They were smiling a lot at each others but for themselves too, joking... The atmosphere is really good between those 5 ones, it's obvious. And around them as well : Eden Gallup was there clapping on stage during the encore, Keith Uddin and Daren Butler were very smiley... The number of interviews, the press conference (one in years), the South American tour announcement... makes me think that Robert wants The Cure to get great attention in the coming months/years.

We discovered that Robert was able to do a kind of drunk Pulp Fiction choregraphy on 'Lullaby'. He smiled like a child hearing Reeves's lines on tracks like 'From The Edge Of The Deep Green See' or 'Wrong Number'. Simon played his bass lines with rage. Jason was beautiful to watch on 'End' as if it was his favourite moment and song... Every second, every detail showed that it was a concert of pure joy.

That's why I have no choice but booking my trip to England for a bit more in August. And I really invite readers to do the same !

My 5 stars go to 'Open', 'Mint Car', 'A Forest', 'Bananafishbones', 'Pictures Of You', 'Lullaby', 'The Caterpillar', 'Push', 'Trust', 'Want', 'One Hundred Years', 'End', 'The Kiss', 'If Only Tonight We Could Sleep', 'Fight' and 'The Lovecats'.

      See you in Reading !

  54. Does anyone know where this new version of "Tape" lies? If it exists on the web?? Holy shit it's cool. The Cure cover band 'The Baby Screams' has somehow commandeered the track and I really want it also. Haha
