Robert talks to EITB after the Bilbao BBK Live show.
And to those worried about Robert's declaration of being a Republican, he has a clarification for you, "I fucking hate the Republican Party in America!"
There's also a brief bit of it here.
I was hoping there'd be an interview after this show! :) I love how young punk Robert never went away, just transformed... I wonder what Robert sings when he's at home.
I wish the background music wasn't so loud, though. Makes it hard to hear him at times.
I think for the most part I sync up with him politically. I understand the need for clarification about the republican party and I think our democratic party would even drive him more insane. He's not about the free handouts for the sake of free handouts and has spoken about the need for value and hard work should be rewarded.
the bit re: Willy & Kate grinning from the cover of inflight news rag is fucking hilarious (had similar experiences w/ bad inflight films)... the only thing they could do to make it more torturous might be, to sew passenger's eyelids open...
had to hear RSX say he hates America's Republican prty (so this makes, like 2-3 interviews i've bothered w/ in 30yrs)
also: point well made ~ personally, i just wanna enjoy the show/music, not stalk individual celebs. having met many big names, its safe to say they're almost always disappointing/discusting offstage.
Probably he did it more for the americans... it's nice to see him doing an interview that is a bit away from the usual "band stuff". Despite being in a band is his actual job and the interview is also part of his job, he can also express some of his views on several subjects during interviews, if he was even asked for that... but all people want to hear is gossip and/or "when is the next tour/album" statements...
I am well aware of the difference on each side of the pond. The fact that he found the need to explain it, is what I find laughable. For a start, neither the band nor Robert is American so why would he be 'Republican' in the American context, nor was he talking about American politics. It just smells of people not being bothered to look up the true meaning of a word and instead acting on a knee-jerk.
It was so obvious in the first interview what he meant. Why did he have to explain it? Really? Let the clueless be clueless. He doesn't leave much to the imagination from a political point of view any more. Why now? The Cure is only band I have really followed over the last 20+ years and it was a nice escape from the political spewing crap from other artist. Oh well, he sure has Jumped the Shark in interviews.
To be fair, I think it has always been obvious that The Cure are anti-monarchy/authority and anti-exploitation. They've also always been pro-human rights. He doesn't really say anything here that isn't new, he's just saying it in the current context.
Bravo Robert.................William and Kate have not done a damn thing. Similar to the fucking Kardashians. This media obsessed society we live in is ABSURD!
I wish he would do more interviews like this. I honestly think he's the last bastion of common sense left in Britain! I know he doesn't want the band to be 'politicised' in any way, but if someone doesn't stand up and say this stuff, no one will! My respect and admiration for this man increases by the day.
Lots of similar points to the interview in The Word. Obviously a few things exercising his mind and he's happy to air them. Enjoying these interviews and shows immensely.
that was the greatest fucking interview i've seen in AGES. i laughed through the entire thing. he's a fantastic interviewee. especially when he's pissed. the only point of contention i have with any of it is when he's talking about 'end' and being in love with the "sham" of the performer. sorry. too late now.
i defy you to name a better band than the cure. DEFY (i suppose there won't be a whole lot of push back since we're all here on CoF chatting endlessly about this though). but feel free to attempt it.
Again, thanks, Craig. I would have thought it was obvious he wasn't embracing the Republican party. The reason he said republican and not democrat is, I think, that a real democracy involves direct participation of the entire population, whereas a republic relies on elected representatives. Besides, the Democratic Party is so corrupted by corporate influence. Barack Obama is to the right of George H. W. Bush and he's always praising Ronald Reagan; Jimmy Carter is treated like crap by this president. Anyone heard of the National Defense Authorization Act allowing him to detain anyone for mere suspicion of associating with terrorists without trial "until the end of hostilities"? He's also killed thousands in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Yemen with drones. The man's a war criminal of nearly the highest order.
It is a sad state of affairs that in the US as majority do not vote!!!! Ronald Reagan is the best president mention in which I had voted for in 1984. Carter LOL!!! he is the first. Obama is Carter the second (A do nothing president). Oh wait..... He is defending America. I give him that. But wait he was going to pull out of the Middle East and close Gitmo...Oh yeah that was before he got his 1st security briefing, Oh shit never mind. Lets take over corporations aka Government Motors (GM) and do socialist crap. Obamanation Care. (A hack job remodeling a bathroom by tearing down a house and rebuilding). If You want numbers comparing US/England/Canada. I will post. 2012 Anyone but Obama!!!!
Sofia, if you think it's wrong to talk politics, I guess then Robert stepped out of line, eh?
Greg, if you think Obama's a socialist, you're out of your mind. I wish Obama had taken over GM, but he didn't and made no stipulations about what they had to make and also let pensions of the workers get cut. Obama's acting like a conservative, but Tea Partiers hate black people so much they don't care.
no i don't. but ANYONE but obama 2012? ANYONE?! anyone. that's insanity. come on. i'd rather not have this page turn into the frigging drudge report, actually. or msnbc for that matter. thanks. we're all aware that every political system is fucked anywhere in the world.
Muldfeld, I'm out of my mind as well as millions and millions of other Americans. Case in point, Obama did bail out GM with tons of tax payers money vs not letting the bankruptcy process go through which most of the time does not mean demise for the Co in question. Bank bailouts! Where do you get TP hating black people? FUD! Stop listening to the extreme liberal media. You are just regurgitating what they are saying. Facts: TP is made up of Rs, Is and Ds and every minority in cross section in the US. TP are for fiscal accountability on the hill. Anything else is just FUD trying to pin TP as just Rs as some kind of whacked splinter group.
Sofia, Robert started it and then dissed his R fan base. Awesome!
At the end of the day it doesn't matter whether or not Robert is a Democrat or a Republican as he is neither American nor does he vote in America. People shouldn't be upset by what he said, I fucking hate the Republican Party in the States too but it shouldn't affect people as I'm not American.
I'm pretty sure that Robert is probably an 'old' Labour supporter in the UK. Thats where his ideology fits in with anyway and like many people he sounds frustrated with the genuine feeling that there is no mainstream 'Left' parties in the UK.
Sofia, I wasn't objecting to your objections to Greg's comments, but to mine. It's Robert that brought up the Republican Party thing, anyway. Personally, whenever I've visited the US or tried to watch clips on youtube, I've found very little on MSNBC that interests me; it's quite corporate and too into praising Obama. I much prefer old-school PBS like Bill Moyers or the best of "Frontline". I'm critical of Obama because, like Bill Moyers, my views are based (I hope) on principles and not just supporting a political figure, no matter what.
Greg, I'm not saying the bailout of GM didn't happen, but it's not under rigorous governmental control and, at every step of the way, Obama has allowed corporations to do as they want. Any allegations that he's a socialist are lies because he's not done anything George W. Bush hasn't; Bush bailed out the banks, but Tea Partiers don't care about that; it's basically the GOP base and a bunch of hypocrites because they want their government services but don't want the poor to have any. Obama's even been extremely oppressive on the drug war and illegal immigrants -- much more so than Bush. Obamacare is Romneycare for Massachusettes and Bob Dole's old counter-proposal to Bill Clinton in the mid-'90s. So, I'm not the one living in fantasy land. You are and you've no evidence to back it up that couldn't be linked to every other Republican president.
"Citizens, not subjects (of monarchies or corporations!)"
Robert Smith is a brilliant man but thought he was wrong when he says there is a disparity between policeman/ambulance person and entertainers (himself included) but the excludes himself because he gives us what we want. I agree entertainers such as sports players, actors and musicians shouldn't be making more than military/police etc. but you can't exclude yourself because you feel you are better than the rest. Kardashians are crap but obviously someone is paying attention to them otherwise they would just disappear.
Robert is a genius, he is smarter than smart.
ReplyDeleteThe way he's looking for words and finding them...it's the highest spiritual level one can have.
best interview of him in a long while! open up more please!!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping there'd be an interview after this show! :) I love how young punk Robert never went away, just transformed... I wonder what Robert sings when he's at home.

I'm glad he's speaking up against all the shit that goes on, whereas so so many don't have a platform to speak on.

ReplyDeleteI sing at home to no one? Mary?

DeleteBeau, not sure if you know or not, but being a Republican in the US is a vastly different thing than being a Republican in the UK. Like night vs. day.

Sense a little bitterness, re R&R Hall of fame underlying his comments.
ReplyDeleteStill best interview/rant in ages

ReplyDeleteThat's Open.

ReplyDeleteRobert you are just an amazing person INSIDE AND OUT! That is why so many people love you. Brilliant and true to the core. LOVE IT!

Greg, he didn't "diss" his Republican fans, he "dissed" the party. I know many Republicans who absolutely hate what the party has become.
DeleteAnd, yes, the same goes for Democrats and their party.

Can I take credit for sparking this whole debate?! Anyway I think RS is missing the point. But that is only my opinion and that is his.
