Billboard examines 4:13 Dream

Billboard has a track-by-track examination of 4:13 Dream.

  1. Wow, Billboard is early on this one.

  2. Well it seems like they like it! Cool but it doesn't matter, I love what I've heard so far!

Less than two weeks to go now! :)

  3. this article left me drooling for the new album

    ReplyDelete
  4. Short and to the point, to say the least.

    I WANT THE ALBUM NOW!!

  5. Although, the anticipation is dang exciting...

I can handle 13 more days.

  6. It was actually a good read. I'm surprised.
Billboard, YOU GOT WHAT I WANT!!

  7. Hey just wondering everyones opinion on the subject, but does the tone of jason's drums bother anyone else? for me he is a great drummer but the sound of the drums doesn't sound as thick or strong as they could. I'm not trying to diss on him or bring up the whole boris/jason argument, just wondering if anyone else has noticed.

  8. As long as you don't start anything like what can be found on YouTube...
I don't have kind words for those guys... or girls.

On the subject, though, I don't think anything's wrong with Jason's drumming. I'm no drummer, but I've been listening to music for a long time (like everybody here no doubt) and if something was wrong, you know... I'd know.

But to each is own, I guess?
Anyway, Robert Smith the man himself doesn't seem to think something's wrong...

  9. Sometimes I feel Jason's playing could use a little more imagination, but he's not bad by any means. I don't hesitate in saying I prefer Boris, but I'm not about to go on one of those youtube rants.

I like most of the parts he came up with on Dream 4:13, though.

  10. This album is gonna FLAY my skin off.

Interesting that it's an examination rather than a review... i.e., they analyze the songs without given subjective sentiments about them. I don't know that I have ever seen it done that way.

Todd: Those YouTube anti-Jason rants are VERY disturbing! They are an attempt to sabotage the band...

  11. Cannot really share their opinion about The Hungry Ghost. I don't think it's that radio friendly... well not more or less than UTS. But Lenoir should play it soon nevertheless... oh well, just 9 more days to go before the album release. *excited*

  12. Punchy and positive review!

Did anyone else think that the review of This. Here and Now, with you sounds like something you'd read on the back of a bottle of Merlot?

On the subject of Jason's drumming, I actually thought it sounded much more "involved" in the Rome show than when I have seen him play. I am not going to make any comparisons with Boirs (or Andy or Lol!)because its not right to do so, only Jason with Jason and I reckon the new album will show him at his best!

    ReplyDelete
  13. RBNR:

LOL... in some ways, yes - like the "heavy tones" part esp.

Although I've never had wine that tasted of chiming guitar melodies... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Cat- "This album is gonna FLAY my skin off."

    Agreed.

On another note, I have considered the adoption option before, I'm very open to adoption actually. Too many kids on this planet with no one looking after them!!

I think it's only right for Billboard to do this considering how well the singles charted... #1 FTW!!!

Upon further listening, I think this album has the potential to be VERY commercially successful, which I think Robert was at least partially hoping for.

The Hungry Ghost, It's Over, and The Reasons Why(great lyrics) mmmaybe The Scream, being the most "radio friendly", I think.

Final and Absolute judgment will be withheld until I get this album in my dry, grubby, and deformed, little hands.

  15. yeah i agree, jason is an excellent drummer, i like what he does, i'm talking about the actually sound and tone of his drums, they sound seems not as strong or something... it's hard to explain

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like Jason a lot. He has plenty of energy, enthusiasm, and passion.
I could FEEL his energy at the concert I went to... very vigorous, vibrant.
That being said, I don't know if he's reached his full potential yet. The emotion is certainly there, but his technique, or lack there of, still leaves me wanting!

    ReplyDelete
  17. CCat,

Chiming guitar melodies dance around the tongue leaving a soft bassy aftertaste!

    You should try them!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah I think I know what you mean corrosive. He doesn't get as thick and solid a sound as maybe I'd like. Maybe just a bit thin sounding.

One thing about him, though is that he seems a little more free flowing and fluid than other drummers The Cure have had, which suits the music they're writing right now very well.

    ReplyDelete
  19. THANK YOU TODD! that is EXACTLY what i was trying to say, not as thick and solid. Still very good though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Definitely a good read! The writer of the article sounds like a real fan, actually....

And Cat - 4:13 Dream just might prove one more way to "skin a cat", huh? LOL! I laughed out loud when I read that.

  21. My musician friend (a guitarist & bassist) has told me that Jason's drumming has a great influence on Simon's performing style. Since Jason joined, Si's bass sound has got heavier and thicker and he is now much more active on stage than before. That's why he highly appraises Jason.

    ReplyDelete
  22. RBNR: Brilliant. :-)

    CPG: You so clever!

COF is rife with cool clever fans. :-)

  23. There's another review posted on Amazon here:

  24. Jason's drumming is just fine. It's not fantastic, but it gets the job done. Honestly, I think he could play differently, but we all know that Robert is in control, and I think he's playing the way Robert wants him to. People blame Jason a lot, and I think he's just doing what he's told.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i don't think that person on amazon has actually listened to the complete studio album.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i liked the review for Amazon but yeah i dont think he has listened to the complete album, not even the live versions of all the songs

    ReplyDelete
  27. How come no one is talking about "This, Here and Now, With You"? This song is knee deep with guitar and 6-string bass hooks interwoven with bubbly keyboard effects and a stutter vocal and drum beat. It is quite euphoric and dreamy. Heaven...

    Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  28. THANWY is probably my least favorite of the "new" new songs. Not bad, but just hasn't grabbed me at all.

    ReplyDelete
  29. honestly, the only ones of the new ones that have really GRABBED me are UTS, sirensong, and the hungry ghost...plus i've always liked the only one.

    ReplyDelete
  30. THANWY has his bass line from High... when I heard it first I thought they'd play High. But the rest of the song is better than High... really like it. Just hope Porl's guitar on The Hungry Ghost is the same on the record as it was Live. He really bears that song...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Get on the freeway and listen to "The Hungry Ghost". Perfect driving song. It just thumps along...

    ReplyDelete
  32. moontear: I agree - Porl rocks on THG!!!

And since I know everyone cares, my favorites of the "new" new songs are TRW, TRSW (just really hit me today how much I love this one :) ), THG, and Switch. :)

  33. Here a review from rollingstone site (dated 30th october...)

  34. comicsandstories: Switch rocks - I can't believe it's in last place!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Switch reminds me of "The Baby Screams". Porl on "Wah Wah Meth" from start to finish but far more feral!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Heh... Switch: "Smith adds to the intensity by delivering paranoid lyrics that lament his isolation." It is my fave track, I am glad to hear more people in this thread cheering it on, it's so surprising to me that it's behind in the polls!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I find it very hard to rank the "new" new songs, because I love almost all of them. But my top 3 right at this minute are Hungry Ghost, Reasons Why, and Sirensong. But Switch and Siren are always, well, switching places. : )

    ReplyDelete
  38. fmjews- i dont see the rolling's review, is it just announcing that the review will be shown on october 30th??

    ReplyDelete
  39. Do you think they could possibly release another single during the album's initial landing? I can so see "Reasons Why" or "Hungry Ghost" perpetuating sales post release.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I like each song in its own way, although I think I love Sirensong the most!

Forgive me for saying so but, I thought Robert's vocals were a little dodgy on some of the songs... not that I'm complaining!! It WAS their first time performing those songs live, that and the files are a low quality. I'm sure those things have factored into how the songs have been received thus far, which is why I think people should wait until the albums finally out before taking a microscope to the songs.

I was more than impressed with their instrumental performances. They should be proud of what they've evolved into.

...This, Here and Now, With You, creeps me out a little! I get a sort of underlying, ominous, foreboding; there's something in that chord progression that makes me feel uneasy too... It's kind of a subtle thing, like at the end of "End". That swishy sound effect that cycles throughout the song... and it's the very last sound you hear, practically bursts your eardrum. I like that song, but that sound effect gives it a very apprehensive quality. Makes me feel apprehensive listening to it! Speaking of microscopes...

  41. *waves excitedly to corrosive*

i dislike jasons drum tone on this album, too soft and thin for my liking. hes energetic and dynamic, so i wish he would get a tone that matched that.

i have to disagree with the author on this point - i dont think THG is that poppy or radio friendly! *pouts*

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah I don't see THG as a single, either. I could easily see TRW as a single, though.

  44. All these reviews and everyone discussing the new material, and all the youtubes of the Rome show are making it very effen difficult to keep the promise I made to myself.

Which is, since we've already heard -- before the Rome MTV thing -- almost half the new tracks from the album, I would'nt listen to any of the new material til I have 4:13 Dream in my hot lil hands, as I want there to be some suprises left.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Out of the 13 songs, I'd rank switch last (personal taste or my lack of etc...). It combines several elements of two songs I don't like very much, cut and 39. Cut was a great song before they sped it up (album version), but I've never liked 39. The funny thing is I'm just being picky, so far I think this album will easily be the best since Wish (IMO it might be better then Wish).

Hmm, thinking of other songs that were better before they were official released (see big hand - instrumental). They need to include this version of the song on one of the next two remasters. Does anyone know if Big Hand was a Disintegration leftover track or was it made as a demo for Wish (post Disintegration)?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with junko's comment - Jason's drumming has bought out a lot of new dynamics in the Cure - Boris had his off beats, Jason's got his strange & wonderful syncopations - I think he & Boris each have an equal billing for best Cure drummer

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thank you for your comment, the big ginge. Yes, even my friend did mention about Jason's strange syncopations which is completely different from Boris's which was much more precise and solid. According to him, Jason's strange syncopations allow Simon to creat a different new sytle in his bass. In fact, when he and his band mates listened to Bloodflowers and The Cure, they thought The Cure had recruited a new bassist.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think 4:13 Dream is going to be the best Cure album since BLOODFLOWERS.

    Wish, for me, is overrated.

I prefer WMS and BF to Wish. TC and Wish are on equal footing for me, with TC perhaps slightly edging out Wish.

    ReplyDelete
  49. No exaggerating, I think 4:13 DREAM might be a million times better than anything anyone has heard before. That's my feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  50. i think so too, swifty, but there will always be the annoying nostalgia-shackled naysayers that bleat on about the cure not being as good as they were in the 80s...

in some ways i think they are better, altough early albums like 17 Faith and Porno are hard to beat...

    ReplyDelete
  51. 4:13 is a great album, but hearing something like Faith or Disintegration as a teen for the first time before the cure had influenced so many other bands, was truly life altering.
4:13 is easily their strongest album in a loooooong time and will fast become a favorite I think, it's just that we have all become spoiled by their creativity that it doesn't shock me like it did when I was 15.
Can't wait till the studio version is available to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  52. helsabot, you know, I completely agree with you about "this.here and now. with you." It creeps me out a little, too. I can't really wrap my head around it. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind the notes that are being both played and sung, let alone how they come together (or don't). And the vocal lines sound so helter skelter and off. Hate to say it, but it kinda sounds like something an inexperienced band would write, not the same band that wrote "The Big Hand" and "Disintegration." It's too bad, because I don't want such a strong album to have a song that I'm tempted to skip over.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Like Clockwise and Robert said, nothing can beat 17 Seconds, Faith and Pornography because they had a great impact on me. I was 17 years old and still naive when first listened to them. I think I'm too matured to experience that kind of strong feelings now.:-(
