Robert on 1st Wave all week...but old stuff

The plot thickens...Robert Smith will be Richard Blade's guest all next week on Sirius XM's 1st Wave show. Not 100% sure if this is new or a repeat of the 2009 stuff, but given the situation, I would think this is new. Everyone excited yet?
(Thanks @RoxyFerryCure)

Update: Richard's show airs from 3-9pm eastern. You can sign up for a free 30 day trial, and listen online, but just make sure you read the details. You will be charged if you don't call and cancel your trial before the 30 days are up.

Update 2 (04/25/11): Thanks to Slicing Up Eyeballs for getting the final word on this. It's just old interview clips.

  1. Craig...you are going to incite a cyber riot!

  2. Craig, please stop toying with us you mean, merciless, heartless man! j/k

Whatever the pending "big news" is, I sure hope it proves to be big, as you are getting my hopes mighty high.

    ReplyDelete
  3. hopefully the "big news" is keyboards live

    ReplyDelete
  4. Poor Craig... can't say a word without everyone whipping out their microscope.

So i'll say. "Thanks for the heads up Craig, and i'll be sure to keep checking CoF - the ONLY source for Cure News for the last 100 years of the interwebs!"

    ReplyDelete
  5. Okay, I removed the "big". Don't want to get hopes up too high. But honestly, The Cure are active again. Isn't that enough? At least for now? : )

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks, Morris. But I'm not quite that old! : )

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes Craig, that is enough (for now). ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  8. given the situation ??????

    what situation?

    ReplyDelete
  9. The Situation from Jersey Shore. He's joining the band. Guitar & keys. : )

No, I mean the situation of TC being active again, and things being set in to motion.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @deadboycraved, he would be referring to this mysterious situation.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Craig, thank you for these news you give us. It doesn't matter that you don't say more because either you don't know more or you do but can't say it. What is important is, like you said, that all this shows they are active again, which fills me with joy, and if they are active I can hope to see them again, here in Rome or, why not?, in Taormina like six years ago (God, already six! Seems yesterday...)
I'll keep checking COF, I'm already doing it at least fifteen times a day... :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank you, Fuji. I think it's now safe to stop checking until Monday...maybe. : )

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hahaha...Lindsey, that post will make a hell of a lot more sense when I can finally explain it. : )

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is anyone here a regular 1st Wave listener? Do they often repeat old interviews? I just don't want to get everyone's hopes up for next week, then find out it's a repeat of the 2009 stuff. Wouldn't really make much sense to repeat that now, would it?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, ok... But the fact is that I love visiting COF anyway, I feel good among fellow Cure lovers! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have Sirius XM. I don't think Richard usually re-airs old interviews, but I'm not positive. I'd guess this will be part of the "This Is the Day" segment that starts his shows each afternoon. I'm listening right now to see if I hear any promos... he's actually on the air right now, but everything's pre-recorded on Sirius XM, so who knows how long ago today's segments were taped. They played "Hot Hot Hot!!!" a few minutes ago and Richard didn't mention anything in the next break.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is awesome news. Its good to hear that the wheels are in motion again, although I would rather like to hear why they stopped in the first place.

I guess the truth will come out soon enough though...'Spoilers'

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey SUE! Thanks for that. Yeah, I just don't think it would make any sense to run that old interview now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. And that's a good point about everything being pre-recorded. I don't expect Robert to be calling in live everyday. This was most likely recorded this past week or over this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  20. How was it, Andrew? No spoilers though! : )

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not going to lie. I found it a little underwhelming. However, the aliens are creepy as hell and already feel iconic.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ahh, ok thanks ...

    lol.. none the wiser

    ReplyDelete
  23. Woot.

I have had BBC America on all day today. Here's to DW tonight! :P

    ReplyDelete
  24. Is Richard Blade's homepage a frickin' geocities page? Good lord, man!

    ReplyDelete
  25. DBC: The short, easy version is that there's good, positive stuff happening behind the scenes, which has to be kept bts for now, but the curtain might be raised as soon as next week, when Robert does this radio interview with Sirius XM.

In even simpler terms...time to get excited and pay attention. : )

    ReplyDelete
  26. lol cheers craig

best start saving now then :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. C'mon Craig, you can tell us. We promise to keep it a secret ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yhanks, Craig and to whoever uploads it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. @J. hahaha i was thinking the exact same thing! looks straight outta the 90s doesn't it? prerecorded neverending speech and all....

    ReplyDelete
  30. squeeeeeeeeee...... The Cure are active again, that is enough for me. Long live The Cure.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sorry, guys, off topic Doctor Who nerdgasm ahead. : )

Have to respectfully disagree with you, Andrew. To quote Doctor Nine, that was fantastic! That beginning, those creatures, River, Amy, Rory, FBI guy, The Doctor(s), everything was so good in this!

No idea where it's going, but that's part of the reason why I enjoyed it so much. Could not believe it was already over when it ended. It just flew by. I need a TARDIS just to get to next Saturday now. : )

And could it have been any creepier? The creatures are bad enough, but that idea that we encounter them all of the time, and then forget, is terrifying.

What did you think of it, Kate?

    ReplyDelete
  32. BTW, Craig, how is that TARDIS coming along ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I listen to First Wave every week. Ive never known him to repeat an interview. So my guess is this will be new stuff. Maybe we will have a "Roger is back" announcement. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey Jo. Unfortunately, I've given up on building my own TARDIS. Decided to put my time and effort into enjoying the here & now, and stop worrying about the past or future. Which has led me to seeing some great shows over this last year.

Still, if I ever stumble across one, the trips to past Cure shows is still on. : )

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just felt that the episode was too busy setting up future events and not focused on the actual story at hand.

For some reason I always believe the first episode of a series should be a rip-roaring Indiana Jones-esque adventure, which serves to sum up the show and re-introduces the characters. This one just seemed to get a bit too heavy too soon. But glad you enjoyed it Craig. It looks like next weeks episode is going to be a cracker though.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Craig, here and now is such a nice place to be. Enjoy the moment. Jo

P.S. If I ever spot a TARDIS I'll pop past to pick you up

    ReplyDelete
  37. Any movement in Cure land is of very high interest to me! So if the interviews are new, you know we'll all be hanging on every word! I wonder if that means new music as well? SO happy to hear that there are good things around the corner! Kisses and hugs to you Craig and all my Cure peeps!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah "roger is back" announcement would be sweet.

We need a "roger is back, uncle fester is gone, fender bass vi's are back, the schecter "were not endorsed but play them exclusively, while we have guitars at home that sound 500 times better" deal is gone, and were going to be doing a world tour like the dream tour with little to no boring songs in which we've decided on only performing in small and midsize venues, and will finally sound like the cure again for the first time in 7 years" announcement

Good riddence to the "4 cure"

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hello, Craig, thanks for asking!

The concept of forgetting the creepies gives me the shivers.

I was excitedly able to call out some of the plot points. Knowing it was a two-parter almost had me delay watching until next week, but I could not. I may watch it again before then.

I found myself paying much more attention to tiny details this time, as opposed to just going along with it, like I usually do. Riveting!

    Can't wait for next week!

Oh, and as soon as Badger came on screen I shouted "Badger!" Heehee.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yesterday, I e-mailed Darrin Smith, who is the program director for 1st Wave and a weekend DJ on the channel, and asked him whether this is a new interview.

This morning, he replied: "Richard re-purposed archival quotes from RS for his bday on This is The Day - thanks for checking"

Since Robert's birthday was last week, I replied asking him to confirm there was no new interview scheduled for this coming week -- just to be absolutely sure. Haven't heard back yet, but I'll let you know if I do.

Still, sounds to me that there is no new Robert Smith interview. I still haven't heard it promoted -- and while 1st Wave doesn't do a very good job promoting its special content online, they do usually promote it fairly well on air, particularly Richard's This is the Day segments.

  41. Jl-

The schecters sound fine. You don't bring your prized guitars on tour with you. They have a habit of wandering off. Besides, there are so many different things infused sound chain in a shoe that big that the sound is significantly colored by the time it reaches your ears. They could play Mexican squires and the difference would be minimal.

I don't know why everyone gets so hung up on roger. The cure synth lines are very simple and a guitar tech could play them. Oops, sorry teddy.

Nostalgists need to just drop the hate for 4tour. From a point of musicianship, the band has never been stronger. Sure, the setlist was more exciting for dreamtour.. but is it that exciting to watch the band play along to memorex?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you so much, Slicing Up Eyeballs. Please let me know if you hear anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm starting to wonder if Lori simply heard the promos from last week, and thought it was for this upcoming week?

And then I put 2 & 2 together and came up with 7?

If that's the case, very sorry for getting hopes up for this week. But I swear, there is good/great news coming. When? No idea. But it has to be soon.

    ReplyDelete
  44. And a very Happy Easter/Passover/normal Spring day to all of you.

I'm going to watch The Impossible Astronaut for the 3rd time. : )

    ReplyDelete
  45. I know I looked at Richard Blade's Facebook page yesterday and there was no mention of an interview. I think he would mention having Robert Smith on for an interview. He seems to do a lot of promtion on his page. I guess we will see....

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, looks like it might be new after all!

From Heron: "I just heard Richard Blade say that since it was Robert's birthday, he wanted to "Get him in the studio for some interviews". It didn't sound like he was talking about repurposed clips."

    ReplyDelete
  47. I had my doubts when I first saw her tweet with no mention of it anywhere else......
coz as sue said, they do a lot of onair promos for things happening.

I remember when I had sirius, whenever something was happening on firstwave they would promote the shit out of it on air, people wouldve got to talking and we wouldve known about this a while ago....

I think its safe to say this was a misunderstanding on loris part by now.

Hopefully the silence is ended soon....

    ReplyDelete
  48. jL: Heron just heard a promo for it today. See my comment above yours.

    ReplyDelete
  49. checking in from my flight to DC, Richard also said to make sure to listen in from 3 pm eastern, 12 pacific and made specific reference to us Cure fans :) theres got to be someone besides me and my hubby that heard it. i was super skeptical about this until i heard it from Richard Blade's own lips.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Good enough for me, Heron. I'll be listening. : ) Have a safe flight!

    ReplyDelete
  51. So here's the whole story as I can remember it, now that I'm not typing frantically on my phone whilst rushing about various airports.

We were driving to the airport and had turned on First Wave as we got in the car. This would have been just before 3 pm Mountain time.

In between songs, Richard came on the air and said the following, as verbatim as I can possibly recall:

"It was Robert Smith's birthday last week, and so I thought it would be fun to get him in the studio for some interviews. You'll want to be listening in starting tomorrow, Monday from 3 pm Eastern, 12 Pacific. Speaking of Cure fans, I've got some of their music coming up for you in this next set, but right now this is Spandau Ballet."

We kind of looked at each other in amazement and then I pulled my phone out and tweeted you just as soon as I could get it typed out.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Just two things:

Super excited for anything the Cure is out to do soon! I'll just keep popping back here every few *cough* hours and such x]

also, I watched that DW marathon saturday on BBC America, and I thought the premier episode was pretty brilliant! I loved the creepy aliens (though they never freaked me out as badly as the weeping angels did *shudder*). I thought it was confusing and fun and brilliant just like DW's always been. can't wait for next week :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thank you so much, Heron! I'm excited again. : )

    ReplyDelete
  54. IMHO Roger should only be allowed back in the band when he remembers (and applies) the fact that his keyboards can make more than two (piano and strings) sounds ... it seems that's all he did there towards the end.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Heard back from Darrin Smith, the 1st Wave program director (head of the station, basically), with the clarification I asked for yesterday. Good news: Yes, you'll hear Robert Smith on 1st Wave all week. Bad news: It's all old interviews. Here's what Darrin said of Richard Blade's plans: "He is doing Cure week to continue celebration of RS’s b-day but all archival best-of Richard’s previous chats with him."

    ReplyDelete
  56. So who's going to setup a pirate stream of this for us?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks once again, Slicing Up Eyeballs. Very disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  58. How disappointing! It did not sound to me like he was going to be rehashing old interviews. Oh well. Sorry to get your hopes up Craig, and as always, we have to remember that if it's not on thecure.com, it ain't happening.

    ReplyDelete
  59. No problem, Heron. Still worth a listen, if you've got Sirius XM.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I wonder if the interviews are from the same time Blade's website was made. That would be what? '95? The festivals prior to WMS?

In fairness, I wouldn't be able to do any better if I made a page myself.

@Craig, re: Camden... it's not fun crossing the bridge into Camdem regardless of the weather. Go a block away from the pavilion it's like a war zone! That show was great as there were a lot of first times in that show for me; Snakepit, Figurehead and Shiver and Shake... amazing. I remember a lot of us being underwhelmed with Watching Me Fall on the record, but damn that track always set the tone for the set. They played the fuck out of that tune live.

Man, do I miss that summer. I was 18, went from Holmdel, Columbia, Camden to Jones Beach bringing different friends with me every time, and my first ever trip to London in April to see the Cure at Wembley. It was a hell of a tour. I'd TARDIS back to 2000 in a heartbeat.

    ReplyDelete
  61. bugger! hopefully some news is just around the corner.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Blah, that sucks.

The news better be more tour dates with all this time waiting for it.
Going to be really upset if it just more crappy releases.

    ReplyDelete
  63. ...i'm a little bit disapointed!

    @Graig!

Are u sure that some exciting news (not only for a tour) are coming in the days/weeks 2 come...i hope this is not only a speculation or a wish from your own but more substantial things

Thanx whatever will be your replies Graig!

    Stephan

    ReplyDelete
  64. Stephan, no speculation or wishing from me. If I were wishing for things, this wouldn't really be it.

Never said anything about a new tour, either. All I've said is things are moving again, and there will be some good/great news soon. I honestly thought it would be out last week, which is why I put up the teaser.

    ReplyDelete
  65. ....news from the studio or future release(s) would be great (i know that i'm not the only one to wish such things like that) !

    U're nice Graig...thanx a lot ..2011= a great The Cure Year....i hope & i pray 4 this!!

    Peace

    Stephan:)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love the Internet, but I hate the fact that it makes us all less patient. I'm excited that there may be news to come, whatever it may be.

    ReplyDelete
  67. "another crappy release" "(not only for a tour)"..

man, what could make you happy?!!!

    I'll take whatever it is.

    ReplyDelete
  68. JL re: the schecter "were not endorsed but play them exclusively, while we have guitars at home that sound 500 times better.

This is the funniest line that I have read in ages and I couldn't agree more. If they would go back to touring with the equipment that they used up to 2002 or so, I would be pleased enough. I would say that they have guitars that sound 1,000 times better.

Those Schecters are absolute shit. Let's hope that they get ditched soon.

    ReplyDelete
  69. DERP... posted all that about the Dream Tour on the wrong thread.

    -1 internet for me.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I really think the Schecter thing needs to go away, the Schecter he uses is a piece of mahogany with Duncan 59 pickups, nothing more, nothing less, quite similar to a Gibson, the difference is in the effect boards they're using now, they are processed sounds, it is a completely different pedal rig they use now, it isn't the guitar, a guitar is nothing more than wood and pickups, I personally have the Ultracure and I use Smiths effects from the Wish era, it doesn't sound any different, just like Jason uses different drum heads and a different snare than Boris, this changes the overall sound, I like the old sounds too, but it isn't the guitar, it's the effects. Prince plays Schecter guitars and he is probably the best guitar player around, as far as news, I only hope we have one more album and maybe a tour, then I think it's time for them to hang with their families, I can only speak for myself, but I think they have given me more than enough, they will always be my favorite band and if it's time....then it's time

    ReplyDelete
  71. Would you be excited if He was collaberating on a project with Justin Bieber?

    ReplyDelete
  72. I too have the Ultracure and LOVE it, but let's face it - this guitar is no Fender Bass VI. It baffles me how Robert seems to hardly want to even touch that anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I too have the UltraCure, and it is no Fender Bass VI, nor is meant to be. The 'Ultra VI' has replaced the Fender Bass VI, they also put out the Hellcat VI with input from Robert and Perry.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yeah, same as yesterday, just a brief interview clip at the top of the show. Talking about 'Lovecats' and Tim Pope being allergic to cats, so naturally, Robert had to make a video full of cats. : )

    ReplyDelete
  75. i'm rediscovering my love for the cure tonight. just listened to 3 imaginary boys, halfway through seventeen seconds, next is faith. i think you can see where i'm going with this.
