The Cure at Vivid Live in Sydney?

Interesting story/rumor going around, first posted at Mess and Noise, then picked up by Music Feeds & Faster Louder. Are The Cure playing special shows at the Sydney Opera House, as part of Vivid Live in Sydney, Australia next month? Hmm...safe to say that you can expect more on this very soon.
And standard disclaimer - It's not official until/unless it's announced on the official site. (Thanks Curt, Jo and Aaron)

  3. This is QUITE interesting b/c I was told by someone that I could expect a surprise near the end of MAY!

I hope IF they do it, its the later part of the Festival then I can TOTALLY GO!!!! OMG! That would be AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  4. What about the middle part of the Festival, Kel? : )

    ReplyDelete
  5. So, say this is true, and the band are playing late May/early June, who's going? : )

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think they'll be doing this. Got a sneaky feeling its going to be announced very soon going by Craig's clues ;0

    ReplyDelete
  7. I’m there as long as its not before June 1st. I have a wedding in Phx on the 28th and I need flight time!

AND if I could really score tix!

    Got to have “Faith”

I SOOOO Need a CURE FIX!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Kel, how good are these friends? Can you ask them to move the wedding up? Or push it back? : )

    ReplyDelete
  9. Beau, I've been trying to drop a few hints over the last week or so, to say that maybe we should all start paying close attention again, and maybe start getting excited. : )

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm always excited Craig but this drives me over the edge :D. Wooohoo, the cure are back and quicker than a lot of us thought!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Craig I’m the Photographer. I don’t think they are willing to change it for me.

When I was told about the end of May I thought F-me Please dont let it be the 28th!

I have a wedding the night of Bestival too otherwise I’d go for that.

Do you know something? Should I just stop all my hopes out now?! SHOOT! Sometimes my job can really get in the way of FUN!

    ReplyDelete
  12. That's the thing, Beau, it's just so sudden! Such a nice surprise! If it happens, of course. ; )

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is starting to consider Hiring out another Tog to take my place!!!! OMG!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Never lose faith, Kel, but it doesn't look good for you. : (
Maybe the dates have changed, though, so let's wait and see what the official announcement says.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Really hope something can be said officially, as soon as possible, as fans will not have much time to plan & save up for this, if they want to go.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And please don't go making crazy travel plans until/unless it is officially announced! Something could be 100% today, then fall through by tomorrow. It has happened before. So wait! Be patient.

But feel free to go crazy with excitement and nervousness. : )

    ReplyDelete
  17. Craig: Yeah it's like the bestival announcement :D. Came from nowhere. Any idea if there will be a lineup announcement if Robert does a press release for this show?

    ReplyDelete
  18. We will get news Tuesday at the earliest I guess? bank holidays and such. haha...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, there will probably be word on who's playing in the band, when the announcement is made. The real surprises are still to come.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well of course. RS doesn't want to steal the spotlight from Kate and William, does he? : P

    ReplyDelete
  21. lol, Craig.

Bedtime for me. I hope the world doesn't change too much while I am sleeping.

    Q and g'nite.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Goodnight, Jo! Have some good Cure dreams! : )

    ReplyDelete
  23. Cheers Craig :). Hope we get something official soon. Even if it is after international workers day :).

    ReplyDelete
  24. I FOUND A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER FRIEND TO SHOOT FOR ME!!!!! HELLS YEAH!

I am SOO going to do whatever it takes to be there!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Playing faith in its entirety?

I'm crushed though I won't be able to make the trip on such short notice however......

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have a wedding today and I can’t concentrate!

So much to do... humm.... ARGH!!!

Sorry to my Aussie Mates trying to get some SLEEP!
I think the Melbs/Bris and SYD peeps got lucky and missed out on the info before bed.
You Perthians on the other hand... try to get SOME KIND OF SLEEP IN!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have Bestival tickets but this is tempting too. How greedy of me haha

    ReplyDelete
  30. Craig quit with the new line-up teasing! :) Go on, give us all a clue - 3 piece, 4 piece, 5 piece? Some old friends returning? My money is on Frank Bell the singing postman joining on backing vocals :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Smudge: Maybe all of that and more? : ) But Frank on backing vocals? Nah, he's doing lead at this show. : )

    ReplyDelete
  32. jL: You are thinking too small.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Craig - 'all of that and more' 6 piece, 7 piece - with that brass section from 'The 13th'?!
Frank and Robert doing a job swap then? Robert delivering mail from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Robert will have all of the details soon. Until then, no spoilers from me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I understand that you can't say Craig and don't expect you to, it's fun trying to guess tho! I'm going for Faith and another album (Seventeen Seconds/Kiss Me?) performed in their entirety with people who played on those albums making a reappearance.
Basically its just great to know The Cure are active again - whatever the line up and whatever it is they are going to play/release/tour. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. CRAIG THANK YOU!

You are the ROCK that keeps us from FLYING AWAY without you we’d have NOTHING to grasp!

    Patiently Waiting for ROBERT! :)

If only Robert enjoyed tweeting ....sigh... yep... if only.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Kel, this would be a great way for Robert to enter the Twitterverse! It would make a huge splash! Like a Jupiter Crash. : )

    ReplyDelete
  38. And Jupiter Crash is not any sort of hint!

    ReplyDelete
  39. LOL that you need to disclaimer any CURE reference.

    Poor Craig! HA!

    ReplyDelete
  40. oh special "shows" not "show"

    wow, very interesting....
i really only glanced over it briefly earlier.
im even more crushed now, cheapest flight around those dates is a bit above 1500$, no way am i going to be able to make this happen :(

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Graig!

Can we expect some news from the studio from Robert?> Just a Yes or Not nothing more would be a very good reply to my question!

    Thanx in advance
    stepahn

    ReplyDelete
  42. i can't take a 24 hour flight. and i don't have the money. but i'm SO excited for you aussies. i feel like i've had 10 cups of coffee! blargh!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I really don't know, SL. But I hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  44. if this happens i hope they play down under

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Graig!

So if u don't know ...i only suspect that will be news about a tour ...i'd wish something more?
    Anyway thanx Graig!

    Stephan ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ah, f- me for being 16 and unable to travel long distances! x] I really hope this means a possible U.S. show... Somewhere... Then nothing would stop me!!! :P

    ReplyDelete
  47. I guess if they are gearing up for a few gigs this year a new album cannot be too far away :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. who needs sleep when you have the buzz of a possible Cure show

    ReplyDelete
  49. If it's true, and if we can swing it, we're going! I missed Trilogy, and if they are doing anything close to that I won't miss it again!

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is driving me crazy! I've never seen them live before...if this turns out to be true, that would be amazing! Time to pray...
Oh, and does anyone know whether Cure gigs are typically over 18s only? I'm turning 18 in May, but I need to know now so I can get an ID or something...
Anyway, I reeeeaaaaally hope this works out...

    ReplyDelete
  51. the new kid, i've been going to cure shows since i was 12. unless they play in some kind of weird club or bar you have nothing to worry about!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The New Kid: As Sofia said, you shouldn't have a problem unless you are seeing a show in a bar or club, which this won't be.
Even if it were, you can usually still get in, you just can't drink, so no worries. If you can get a ticket, you can get in to this show. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  53. "Yes, there will probably be word on who's playing in the band, when the announcement is made. The real surprises are still to come."

Craig, all due respect, I love ya and all that but you're a f*cker ... ha ha ...

    ReplyDelete
  54. I was at the 1st Trilogy Show ... baby due early September so this aint happening. Shame. Happy for those that go though.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks Sofia and Craig. Good to know! Now I just really, REALLY hope it happens...I don't think it could get much better than that-my first real gig being The Cure...

    ReplyDelete
  56. faith played by the cure + orchestra? :D

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hey maybe Lol's back. He was pushing for a Faith anniversary tour a while back!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Its time for News and not all that rumors and guessing what it could be.
    Tired of that.
From now on I will check the official The Cure website only. At least until the next News. I will miss COF. Bye for now, see you later.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Who liked this weeks Who?

I preferred it to last weeks episode....I also think Matt Smith should keep the beard...Beards are cool

    ReplyDelete
  60. Give us on the east coast 2 more hours (9pm), Andrew. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. And I'm downloading it now, but won't be able to watch it until late tonight. Can't imagine it can get better than last week, which I loved, but I'm very willing to be proved wrong. : )

    ReplyDelete
  62. Kate I'm in the UK so I so I saw it like 6 hours ago haha. It's clear that Who under Moffat means more continuity and connectivity between seasons. Even the most seemingly insignificant episodes have details that play out to a much larger, deeper story. It's now becoming like a huge jigsaw puzzle and I'm sure we are all going to have lots of fun putting this one together :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Love hearing that, Andrew! Just what I wanted. Love the mysteries and puzzles and wondering what in the hell is going on. : )

    ReplyDelete
  64. Craig loving mysteries and puzzles? Well I never would have imagined! hehe.

I'm sure all will become clear soon :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. "Even if it were, you can usually still get in, you just can't drink, so no worries."

In NSW?! I've seen 29-year-olds refused entry for having an out of state driver's licence, so I'm highly dubious about this.

    ReplyDelete
  66. what happens in the US a lot is that they draw X's on your hands if you're under 21. a lot of small places serve alcohol (21+) but admit 18+.

but usually they only card for bars/clubs/small venues. cure shows are big, and this is like a festival sort of thing, right? should be all ages.

that said, @The New Kid, no harm in getting an ID, since you'll need one for something eventually anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Craig, I thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us every little bit of info you can find.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I don't think that there has been an age-restricted Cure concert in Australia since the 1980's.

No harm in arranging an ID, but I am not sure that you would need it.

    ReplyDelete
  69. ooohh *pokes Craig* watch the second DW episode ASAP if you haven't yet :D the end of it is driving my sister and I insane. I'm pretty excited for this season, though the cliffhangers might drive me over the edge before too long x]

    ReplyDelete
  70. FLOPPY DISKS? i'm old, but that just seems like such an archaic way to record music! mustve been the tits when that programming came out though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. sorry! instead of the poll there was a youtube video of depeche mode and the cure recording? O_O

    ReplyDelete
  72. ....strange...no news yet?....Graig come on ...give us something 2 eat?

    Peace

    stephan :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's impossible for me to get excited about a potential concert that's 7,487 miles from my house. Let me know when the boys will be in the U.S.!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hmm, why is Roger O'Donnell trying to figure out which way water runs down the drain in Australia?

"rogerodonnell - You know I could have sworn the water swirled in the other direction in Australia? Bloody Google ruins everything..."

Is it a clue? A red herring? An impossible astronaut? The mystery continues! : )

    ReplyDelete
  75. Levinhurst cancelled a tour, and Lol has been referencing the past "with more to come"... ... ...

    (pouring gasoline on the fire!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  76. When I saw Roger a few weeks back in London he introduced his improvised set by saying 'It's nice to play something spontaneous...considering I spent most of my career playing the same stuff night in and night out' or words to that affect.

I know Roger has been teasing us for a while now (remember that interview he did with the BBC for Disintegration's remaster?) but I think his solo stuff is his top priority right now....But please prove me wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  77. they really need roger back

    ReplyDelete
  78. But it does swirl the other way round compared to the northern hemisphere, doesn't it?
Anyway, I absolutly don't believe a second Roger could come back as a full member of the band again (same for Boris or Lol). He has full of challenging and interesting projects going on to play his own music, so why would he bother?
Maybe for an anniversary one-off concert with all past members in a few years maybe...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Apologies to everyone who's not Andrew, Kate, or Hannah. No clues in this, just geek/nerd talk. : )

Hannah: Oh I watched it first thing Saturday night. Loved every bit of it!
How creepy was that orphanage and the guy who was running it? I loved that guy. He has to come back in a future episode.
And then mysterious Amy, the lady with the eye-patch, the changing door, the encounter, that photo of Amy and the girl, and that ending! To quote Doctor 10, WHAT? : )

Brilliant start to the season. I have no real idea where this is going, and it doesn't make much sense right now, but I have complete faith in Steven Moffat, and I'm all in for the ride.

Next week looks like lots of fun. Love a good pirate story. But I can't wait for the one after that, The Doctor's Wife, written by Neil Gaiman. Hope it can live up to the enormous expectations I have for it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think that little girl is River :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Andrew: Has to be, right? Look at River's reaction when she's shooting at the astronaut, then realizes something, and says, "Of course not."

Think Gaiman will use the Dream Lord in his story? : )

    ReplyDelete
  82. Ok, ok. I'll bite. I was a big fan of Tom Baker era Dr. Who. I tried to give the new Who a fair shake, but never put in the time. So let's say I'm feeling left out (not just here, but every other damn conversation at work is about Dr. Who)- where do I start? The first of the new Dr. Who, or just start with the newest Dr?

    Help a brother out!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well no one can do Dream Lords like Gaiman. Although I would prefer his Dream Lord to make a cameo over than the that Truman Capote guy.

On a side note, how awesome would Matt Smith, David Tennant or even Paul McGann be at playing Gaimans Sandman if there was ever to be a movie or TV series based on the comics?

    ReplyDelete
  84. J: I would say start with the latest Doctor, Matt Smith. Watch season 5, and if you enjoy that, jump right in to the current season.

Hmm, but you would also need to watch 2 episodes from season 4 for the whole River Song storyline to make more sense and have a greater impact. So watch Silence in the Library & Forest of the Dead, before watching season 5.

If you have Netflix streaming, I believe season 4 is on there, so that would be a quick and easy way to watch those 2.

    ReplyDelete
  85. SQUEE.

J - I have only watched the New Who, and LOVE it.

Nerdist.com recently did a series of "Doctor Who for Newbies" postings that were really good. If you want to start with the Ninth (first new) doctor, then this is the post for you:

    http://www.nerdist.com/2011/01/doctor-who-for-newbies-the-ninth-doctor/

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. And avoid all spoilers from this season until you catch up! Don't read anything Andrew and I just said. : )

    ReplyDelete
  87. Kate, Andrew, Hannah: Do not be fooled by The Silence. They obviously did not stay away for long. They obviously came back in the late 80's and had Martin Gore write propaganda for them, hence the Depeche Mode song...Enjoy the Silence! : )

    ReplyDelete
  88. This degree of sci-fi geekery may require me to move into my parent's basement!

Thanks for the advice. I have a free weekend and I think I know how it's going to be spent.

    ReplyDelete
  89. The Sundays - Monochrome
(from the Static & Silence album)

It’s 4 in the morning July in 69
    Me and my sister
    We crept down like shadows
They’re bringing the moon right down to our sitting room
Static and silence and a monochrome vision

    They’re dancing around
    Slow puppets silver ground
And the world is watching with joy
We hear a voice from above and it’s history
And we stayed awake all night

See? Harriet Wheeler remembered. : ) And look at the album cover .

    Coincidence? I think not. : )

    ReplyDelete
  90. Back on topic, I will be very surprised if we don't hear something official this week. Possibly tomorrow. Though I really wouldn't hold your breath on that.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Remember, it has been a bank Holiday in the UK for the last few days. Nobody does anything on a Bank Holiday except drink beer and have BBQ's...Yes even Robert Smith :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. "what happens in the US a lot is that they draw X's on your hands if you're under 21."

That's delightful, but has nothing to do with licencing laws in NSW, where the drinking age is 18.

"a lot of small places serve alcohol (21+) but admit 18+."

Again, completely irrelevant in NSW, where the drinking age is 18.

"but usually they only card for bars/clubs/small venues. cure shows are big, and this is like a festival sort of thing, right?"

Not rrrreally; even though [IF IT IS REAL AND TRUE AND HAPPENS] it's being promoted under the rubric of Vivid, word is that this is being booked directly by the Opera House, not via this year's curator.

And an arts festival across several weeks, and venues, and public locations, including a range of performances and lectures and art installations is probably not what you're thinking of - there have been Vivid events in the past with as few as three people in attendance at any one time.

As for Cure shows being "big" - their last 7 Sydney shows have been in the same 13,000 capacity venue. The largest room in the Opera House holds less than a quarter of that, so these are not going to be "big shows" per se*. If there are multiple shows. If there's only one, it's going to be - compared to their last three tours - tiny.

*The forecourt and surrounds rammed about 100k for Crowded House's farewell in 1996, but that was free and uncontrolled; ticketed events like Bjork in 2008 and Massive Attack last year limited tix to about 5,000. Regardless, the forecourt is currently undergoing some kind of remodelling - you can't even get up via the usual stairs from the Opera Bar underneath at the moment - and so is most likely unavailable.

    "should be all ages."

This is correct, but only because all shows at the SOH (unless they contain a vast amount of nudity, or something - and I viewed ten minutes of swangin' wang in the Drama Theatre there, for one example, when I was a kid seeing a production of Six Degrees Of Separation) are all ages.

  95. @Kit

which is why i ended the comment mentioning that it'd be all ages and that he probably wouldn't need an ID, though there was no harm in getting one.

    ReplyDelete
  96. goodness you just related 80s new wave to DW. I applaud you Craig :D

okay so, uhm, major spoilers ahead I guess...

the Silence were especially creepy to me. like, as bad as the weeping angels from previous seasons, and the gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (could I be more of a geek here??)

I didn't even think of the possibility of River being the girl!! personally I don't like River much, she's a bit too overconfident for me. but the girl is obviously a time lord, or has some time lord DNA for whatever reason (time-head hur hur) so I don't think that's it.

the whole Doctor-Amy-Rory thing is a bit confusing to me though, especially if this girl is Amy's kid. how how how did she get time lord DNA if she and the Doctor never, you know, do anything of the sort together? I hope Rory and Amt stay together I love them haha.

    it's interesting. I'm psyched :D

    ReplyDelete
  97. also, by "big" i meant, the only shows i go where they card tend to be in the <400 person range. as soon as it gets bigger than that, i've never been asked for an ID/alcohol usually isn't served.

but again, i'm not in australia! was just adding my two cents.

    ReplyDelete
  98. The leak doesn't really make much of a difference to me because I was so sure it was happening anyway. It seemed like everything fit in, with the hints about always having 'Faith', and Vivid's unsubtle gestures. Now I'm just worried about tickets...

    ReplyDelete
