Signed UK copy of 'Cured'

Essential Listening: Intro to The Cure

From Howl & Echoes:

"In case you’ve missed it, The Cure have been serving up some downright sickening set lists on their current world domination tour. We’re talking 28+ songs, 4-5 encores, songs they’ve never played live, songs that haven’t seen the stage in thirty years, new songs –  it’s pretty next level.

Coverage of their recent gigs have us shivering in anticipation for what is set to be one hell of an experience at both Splendour in The Grass and their tour dates. Taking a look at the time allotted to Robert Smith and co., we’re in for a treat. Naturally, we’re a bit excited and have put together a list of what we think are some of the top, most essential tracks from The Cure in preparation for their massive, three hour set. It may get emotional."

A look back at 'Purple Haze'

From A.V. Club:

The Cure amplified the disorientation of Hendrix’s psychedelic “Purple Haze” By Annie Zaleski
Jul 13, 2016 12:00 PM

In Hear This, The A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well. This week, in honor of Amanda And Jack Palmer’s covers album, we’re picking some of our favorite cover songs.

One of the more intriguing covers albums of the ’90s (and, wow, there were plenty from which to choose) is 1993’s Stone Free: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix. Not only did the record feature plenty of the expected guitar gods—Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Slash—but it also boasted the Spin Doctors jamming through “Spanish Castle Magic” and Belly unleashing a psychedelic “Are You Experienced?”

The album’s best detour, however, was The Cure covering “Purple Haze.” This particular version reinvents Hendrix’s original as a weird, reedy, industrial song. In fact, the tune closely resembles a factory’s humming, clanking machinery, what with its electro-plated rhythmic stutters, piano with a faint house music hangover, and Robert Smith’s vocal hiccups. Above all, The Cure amplifies the song’s original disorientation by taking an inventive approach with the song’s arrangement—it’s less a straightforward transformation than one marked by funhouse-mirror diffraction.

I’ve never been a huge Hendrix fan, but The Cure’s “Purple Haze” made me appreciate the original more—which, to me, is the hallmark of a successful cover. Perhaps unsurprisingly, however, the cover is a polarizing song for fans, one that either seems to be beloved or derided as terrible. Yet “Purple Haze” presaged the equally weird detours The Cure took later in the decade on 1996’s Wild Mood Swings, an album that moved away from moody, atmospheric dream pop and dabbled in everything from gnarled, psychedelic shoegaze to ornate cabaret. Rather than a one-off, the Hendrix cover seemed to steer The Cure in yet another direction.

"Cure Night" on Sky Arts HD in Italy

From Tivoo:

"#TheCureNight", An evening dedicated to the legendary band on Sky Arts HD

An entire evening to the British band that has managed to transform the dark music into a mass phenomenon. For #TheCureNight, Sky Arts HD (120 and 400 of Sky) presents Wednesday, July 13 starting at 21:10 two extraordinary premieres to know the long career of The Cure: three decades of activity in constant metamorphosis, between crisis, divisions, replacements, paranoia and depressions, under the spiritual leadership of the charismatic leader Robert Smith.

It starts with "ROCK LEGENDS - THE CURE", the series on the great rock legends. In this episode we will be told through interviews, music, anecdotes and video clips, the story of the trio of Crawley, Sussex, from their birth in 1977, when they were called Easy Cure, up to global success with tours that go on even today. The band originally composed by voice and guitar (Robert Smith), bass (Michael Dempsey) and battery (Lol Tolhurst), imposes itself immediately for its simple style and biting defined post punk. Then the group veers towards a sound more and more dark and intimate, and then get to write some of the British pop masterpieces.

The evening will then continue on Sky Arts HD at 22.10 with the airing of "The Cure at Hurricane Festival", a documentary that proposes the 2012 edition of the festival Scheeßel, Germany, which takes place since 1973. It will be possible to relive exclusive performance of the Cure who performed, among other artists, with some of their best-loved songs: among these, Pictures of you, Love Song and Friday I'm in Love.

Pearl on Gonjasufi's new album

From Stereogum:

"The mystical Californian bass music enigma Gonjasufi tends to go quiet for long periods of time, and we haven’t heard anything from him since his 2012 album MU.ZZ.LE. But he’s just announced that he’ll release his new album Callus next month (out 8/19 on Warp), and it’ll feature Pearl Thompson, former guitarist of the Cure, on a few tracks. First single “Maniac Depressant” is a short burst of moody, gothic psychedelia, and you can hear it below." (Thanks @is_maith_liom)

Cure Tour 2016 article

Hank Donovan wrote a really nice article on rediscovering The Cure and getting to see them twice on the current tour. Here's a couple of excerpts, but go to Effects Bay for the full story:

"They started the tour in New Orleans. I was able to purchase tickets for my wife and I at the Hollywood Bowl (excited to see this show in a such a historical venue). I figured if I see the set list (via setlist.fm – amazing site for the obsessed) in New Orleans, I would get an idea on what songs to expect for our show weeks later. They played 2 nights in New Orleans, and the sets were SO different. Okay.. they must be playing a Set A and Set B for each show. Both sets were awesome, so I was excited for either one. Then they played Texas.. different set. What.. is going on? By the time they played the Hollywood Bowl, they played 70 distinct songs on this tour. They were playing B-Sides, rarities, the hits.. old and new. It was clear, this was going to be a tour for the fans.

............

The show gave me a melancholy feeling though – and not because it’s the Cure. The crowd all had smiles. Everyone was singing along. So much love focused to the band. The melancholy feeling was.. is this the last Cure tour? It felt like a “last blast” for the fans. I didn’t want it to end. But then again, I’ve thought it was the end.. since 1989 and they always seem to continually bring it."  (Thanks Reeves)

The Twilight Sad thank The Cure

From The Twilight Sad's website:

Hi everyone,

It's been over a week since we played the last gig of the North American tour with The Cure. I've now had some time to let the experience sink in a bit (I don't think it ever truly will tbh) and wanted to write a quick message of thanks. I'll try to keep it brief as I could write for days about how great an experience it was. Here goes.......

First of all I don't think we could say "Thank You" enough to The Cure for the opportunity. We were treated so well by the band and their crew. Their words of encouragement and faith in what we do by giving us the opportunity to play these prestigious gigs is something that we'll never forget or take for granted. The whole experience was inspiring. Each night once we packed up after our set and took five minutes to relax I headed out to watch The Cure's show. They played a different set every night and this in turn (plus some inspiring words from Robert) encouraged us to do the same.

I want to thank our crew: Chris, Andy, JP, Ray and our driver V. Without these amazing people we cannot do what we do.

Being able to share this experience with our friends, family and people who have helped/supported the band over the years was a wonderful thing.

To all the people that were introduced to our music I thank you for all the nice messages you sent and that I'd see after our set or wake up to in the morning. We met so many good people and many new friendships were made over the past 8 weeks.

Having Simon wear our t shirt and Robert's kind words about our band before dedicating "A Forest" to us on the last night was the icing on the cake of what was a great tour.

All the best to you and yours

Cheers

James

p.s Lets do it all again in Europe.
