The Guardian has an article about the new album, and claims that none of the singles will be included on the album. I'm guessing that they just say that because none of the b-sides or "Mix 13" a-sides will be included. Not that the four a-sides have been dropped. (Thanks Simon)
What a lame article. Me wanty album art and track listing!!!
ReplyDeleteThe dude gets an "F" on his essay. He needs to study the facts a little better before writing about things he knows nothing about.
ReplyDeleteTaken from the official's announcement of Hypnagogic States:
"The Cure announce an EP of remixes of the first 4 singles TAKEN FROM THEIR IMMINENT NEW ALBUM to be released digitally and on CD on the 13th September."
"None of the B-SIDES will appear on the album. The singles were produced by Robert Smith and Keith Uddin."
It WAS a lame article.....
"..and think about a release date"
ReplyDeletei suspect it will be out october 13, 2013
because, you know, you can never take a concept TOO far.

ReplyDeleteIt´s a weird article indeed, no real news or something we didn´t know.
ReplyDeleteCure fans @ UK, how much realiable info source is The Guardian ?
I don´t think Cure finally drop the 4 singles off the new album, would be a "never seen before" and an unexpected move of them.
Pretty much seems like the guy/girl who did the article doesn´t have acuurate info of the upcoming event of Cure.
It´s always good to see another Cure article on the media, but this one doesn´t make a difference.
Again, maybe a case of "Publish a Cure article, to have more readers, no matter the content"....
:-0
There also is a new article on pitchforkmedia today about the new title here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/145052-the-cure-reveal-new-album-title
A little bit behind...
If only this could be true. Inbetween Underneath The stars and Baby Rag Dog Book there could be so much beauty without the 4 singles we already know...
ReplyDeleteA few weeks ago, I had actually read on another forum some rumors that the 4 singles might be left off. If this is true, that might mean that RSX is making that coveted "dark album" after all. Bring on the angst!
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about it, though, because I do love the singles, save for SWID. But perhaps the album would be more coherent without them? Dunno.
I would hope that regardless, they still play the singles live. Especially Freakshow, which I heart very very very very very very very very much!
if it is true, it's genius. i remember when bands used to release singles that had no other purpose other than to be singles. there was no album in sight.
ReplyDeleteer, um. oops.
Please keep the perfect boy. I actually like it more and more. The rest is nice for Join the Dots disc 5 and 6 (together with the 2004 recording of A Boy I Never Knew!)
ReplyDeleteI have always speculated how much better it would be if the first four singles weren't featured on the album:
ReplyDeleteBecause the article in question, like other people have said, is based on no fact at all, just info gleaned from COF and the official site, we can't take it as read that they won't appear('According to reports', indeed!!!)
What I want is at least thirteen new tracks discovered for the first time together as a package. That or four radically different versions of the already-released singles.
Either way, it's all going to be very interesting anyway.
Pointless article about nothing as it was, hopefully a few casual Cure fan readers of the Grauniad (a publication favoured by indie boys and scenster types because of its left wing allegiances) will create awareness of the new album, which means it might shoot up the charts in the UK a bit further than the singles did.
... and it is bad marketing trying to sell an album of which 4 songs (=30%) has already been sold (and not that succesfully)
ReplyDeleteI'll be happy to wait till December 13 for some very intense and deep darkness
Okay, now you have me wondering!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd my only question has already been asked "What is the credibility of The Guardian?????" From the tone of the article, it doesn't sound like they have much.
I really doubt the recent singles will be left off the album. But yeah, now my brain is stirring.
This is all absurd, of course the singles will be on the album. You don't promote an album by releasing singes and then release the album without them. Besides, who the hell buys singles in this day and age? I had a hell of a time locating them to begin with.
ReplyDeleteHmm... I can't help but think that just maybe the singes were released to appease us hungry fans who wanted concrete proof that an album is on its way.
ReplyDeleteThe US tour dates were, of course, delayed due to the postponement of the album; when it came to the crunch they did need some recorded output to promote with the live dates.
It is very plausible that the four singles won't be on the album. Whether they are or not is irrelevant, 'cos of course we're all going to buy it...
Another thing I've been thinking about: Perhaps this is album is going to be the Cure equivalent of David Bowie's Toy LP, album entirely made up of unreleased early demo tracks. Imagine 13 tracks all lifted fom early demos: SWID from the HoTD sessions, ABINK from the Cure and elven other tracks from the other albums.
Let's just hope that the same doesn't happen to the album that did happen to Toy, the whole thing getting shelved forever!

ReplyDeleteI'd suggest it is a little ambitious to call that article is 'news'.
ReplyDeleteConfucius say: Man who fart in church must sit in his own pew.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting a bit tired of all the references to image. If it's not how Robert looks in other articles, it's how his supposedly depressed fans will be happy in a really depressed way. Sick of this!
ReplyDeleteDo Radiohead fans get this? No. How many fanbases get insulted this much? Surely even Motly Crue fans aren't insulted for their bad taste.
Even Pitchfork did a super lame job. I've provided them the youtube links to all the singles twice and they still forget Freakshow, Sleep When I'm Dead and their respective b-sides. Freakshow is awesome -- better than anything Pitchfork shows on pitchfork.tv!
Anyway, I'm excited about the album!
The singles can't be left off, if only because "The Only One" normal version (with the intro) hasn't been released yet. I'm pretty sure Robert will go with a mixed mood album, and I'm fine with that as long as the slow, romantic mood is well-represented!
ReplyDeleteTHEN we can get the dark album!
It's an exciting time to be a Cure fan.
What is with all of the bitching about this article? They can only talk about the little bit of info RS has released so far.
ReplyDeleteAnd while all of US may know this stuff, guess what? It isn't aimed at US.
Make up your minds, do you want them to get publicity or not? Maybe someone out there doesn't spend all day online, and this IS news to them, and now they know there's a new Cure album coming out in October (maybe! : P ).
And technically, the article is correct. All 8 tracks are exclusive to the singles, if you believe what RS has said.
IF the a-sides are on the album, they will not be the "Mix 13" versions. They would be different versions, altered in some way or another.
Sorry about the rant, but the constant bitching about every little thing gets old sometimes.
And for the record, I've heard these rumors of the a-sides being dropped from the album, and don't believe it at this time. But I would really love for it to be true. : )
Now I'm going back to talking to a friend out at sea. ; )
And to Cat: There has been no change in font size. It's all on your end, or in your mind! : P
I hope that wasn't too harsh! I didn't mean for it to be. Gustav has me a bit aggravated today. Sorry.
ReplyDeletenah, we need a good knock on the head every once in a while, craig. ;)
ReplyDeleteCraig - Thanks for the gentle reminder. We often forget that we are ahead of the times for news on the band (thanks usually to COF). Our seeming disdain is a sign of our hunger for 'news', but our enthusiasm sometimes gets the better of us (as my year 7 teacher wrote on my school report)
ReplyDeletecraig - I hope Gustav doesnt affect your area, too much. stay safe!
ReplyDeleteCraig, I'm shocked and appalled! =)
ReplyDeleteI'm all for publicity, but there has been no mention anywhere that I've seen about the recently released singles being dropped from the track list. Different mixes of the singles, well that would make sense.
ReplyDeleteBitchy or not - it was my first reaction to the article based on the information I've gathered from reliable sources.
That said, I hope I don't bitch on too much, Craig. Usually I'm on here trying to be upbeat and defend the band to certain nay-sayers....because the truth is, I'm crazy about The Cure and toatlly loving the singles. I've now spent tons of time patiently waiting the release of this album and honestly this article struck me as very amature and ill-informed.
I'm worried about Gustav for you too, Craig. Hopefuly he'll steer of NO. Weather in general, especially tracking hurricanes and winter storms are a big hobby of mine and my eye has been on Gustav all week.
Craig, stay safe, OK? We'll be thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteI agree to Craig.
ReplyDeleteNot all Cure fans, especially the non-hardcore fans, are enthusiastic at searching for every tiny bit of The Cure related information like we are. They don't spend much time checing neithe COF nor the official site. Though there are nothing new for us in the article, it might be helpful for those casual fans to become aware of what The Cure has been doing. Better than nothing.
Craig, you're making perfect sense. Please forgive my past pissy episodes.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I feel for you re: Gustav. We're keeping a close eye on it too, but as you know, it's looking like LA is going the bear the brunt of the fury. Please do what you can to stay safe, sweetie. <3
Stay safe craig, I'm going to call Bush and FEMA right now to make sure they are on this one ASAP.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about this album news, not Gustav :p
Just kidding, take cover!
nice to see an article about the cure in the guardian at the end of the day, especially since we're starved of ANY publicity on the cure in the uk.
ReplyDeletebring it on :)
Craig spoke to me at last! *swoons*
ReplyDeleteStay safe Craig; we admire and care for you. :-)
Craig, do you have a place to if they decide to go ahead with evacuations on Saturday?
ReplyDeleteWow. The Cure is putting out a new album?
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realized. That should be interesting!
:)
Its potentially on 6 weeks till a new album, fingers crossed of course, but still no real news, lets hope it starts to flow quickly from here on in!
ReplyDeleteHello To Clockwise.....check your e-mail!
and stay safe Craig!
craig, you and all of (my favorite town of) new orleans are in my prayers!
ReplyDeleteplease keep safe and dry.
xo
I don't have prayers, Craig.
ReplyDeleteBut if I did, you'd be in them.
Stay safe.
I think it would be really cool if none of the singles would appear on the album. The idea struck me a long time ago, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to think so (no pun intended)...
ReplyDeleteAs for MadBob who said:
'I don´t think Cure finally drop the 4 singles off the new album, would be a "never seen before" and an unexpected move of them.'
What about Japanese Whispers and the singles before and after 3 Imagenary Boys?
Personally I think this would be an excellent publicity stunt, even though it would hit harder a few years ago when you didn't have itunes and couldn't purchase downloads.
I'm glad I bought the singles regardless, beacuse it's frankly the best recordings they have done since Wish (except perhaps The Promise) ;-)
Nice one Craig!
ReplyDeleteNice to see The Cure get some coverage here in GB, particularly in a broadsheet news paper (or on their web page at least). It comes across a bit of a wet lettuce mainly because of the lack of solid information the author had to work with in the first place. I could have done without the silly "hair" remark, though. I love Robert's image, but it annoys me that people often can't see any further than it. Or maybe that's the point…
As I don't think anyone has answered the quesiton "how much realiable info source is The Guardian?" I'll give my tuppence ha'penny from here in the sunny north of england.
ReplyDeleteFirstly I am a Guardian reader, have been for most of my newspaper reading life. By and large it's a great paper.
However my wife will testify to me regularly throwing down the paper and slagging off the music journalists for, in most cases, appearing to know absolutely nothing about music and getting even basic facts wrong or being stupidly late with news. I take most of what I read music-wise in The Guardian with a pinch of salt, especially on bands I don't know about due to the bad reporting on the stuff I do know about. It's odd because they do a lot of music stuff and sponsors Glastonbury Festivla and other music stuff so you'd think they'd be better.
Having said that this article didn't reduce me to 'rant' mode. It's great The Cure are getting coverage (The Guardian are usually pretty good at covering them to be honest) and I think the journalist didn't exactly have a lot of info at his fingertips. Benefit of the doubt on this one from me.
alastair: you rock! check *your* e-mail. :-)
ReplyDeletewhy does everyone so unequivocally NOT want the singles on the album? Is it because we already have them and you'd rather listen to new songs? or because you dislike the singles? i guess everyone has their own response to that.
i would of course appreciate a lusciously dark album, but i also want an album where freakshow is prominently featured. not that i haven't already listened to it about 500 times. perhaps more.
Cat - Do you enjoy Freakshow so because it speaks to you and your falsy rebellious skull t-shirts??
ReplyDeleteFant, I love Freakshow because it speaks to my inner raw carrot.
ReplyDeleteNow, are you gonnna enter into a polygamous marriage with me and hynreck or not? Neither of you have rejected or accepted my proposal. Please let me know by 2pm MY TIME today.
PS Last day of planning before the kiddies start next week?
PPS Craig, sorry this is off topic. Wait, I did talk about FS so I'm safe, right?
Craig, I'm worried about you. Are you staying safe???
ReplyDeleteCat - I can't possible answer your two questions publicly! Only DJ and 2 unidentified lurking guests know my answer to them. You didn't show you last night when I was online...
ReplyDeleteAnd I resent and reject your deadline! If such pressure is any indication of how you are as a life mate and mother... humpf... Let me see...
I love The Cure! <-- (on topic portion of my post)
Future polygamous husband: Please refrain from talking about me with your other wives. It's very unbecoming.
ReplyDeleteNow get back to work, you in-denial teacher! Oops, I need to work as well.
Cure RULZ!
lol at everybody who thinks the singles aren't going to be on 4:13 dream.
ReplyDelete...dream on! Robert stated many times that the B-Sides wouldn't be in, therefore telling us that the singles WOULD be in. What's so hard to understand? I mean, maybe he'll break his word on the released date and such a few times... but he's not about to make a complete ass of himself.
...please Robert? Make me right. The singles are cool and I'm sure the rest of the album, with UTS and BRDB leading the way, is going to be even cooler.
That wedding still on?
ReplyDeleteI forgot all about it. I'm a bad bad future husband.
Too much porn on the internet.
... now where did THAT come from?
o_q
Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteMe and you are the world, she said, nothing else but porn is real.
ReplyDeleteThe two of us, is all there is, the rest is just sharing...
our wedding
VOWS
always meant to be I can feel it
Regardless of evidence to the contrary, I'm going to indulge the fantasy that the singles will not be on the album. What a splendid idea! For one thing, the A sides don't do much for me. I found them somewhat interesting live, but the studio versions are already boring me. For another - I'd love to just have new material. I'm not very interested in slightly remixed (or un-mixed) versions of these tracks, and I'm content to hear these tracks as singles without being on a full album.
ReplyDeleteI still can't accept that these songs and UTS can be on the same album. I have no problem with "mixed" albums (KM is one of my favs), but with these tracks it just doesn't feel right for some reason (UTS and FS???). Either that or I'm totally mishearing UTS, and the studio version is going to be completely butchered.
Whatever - who cares?! New Cure album and Cranes album on the same day! WOO!
Craig - good luck down there. Kick Gustav's ass, that bastard.
But isn't that the defining beauty of the Cure - that you can have two such disparate tracks as FS and UTS on one album? I liken it to the WMS phenomenon - The 13th and Jupiter Crash sharing the same disc space. One a weird, wacky, surrealistic track, the other a lush cosmic/romantic dirge. Never mind the mass mindset regarding WMS - the fact of the matter is, the album is more INTERESTING with those songs sharing space. At least to my ears.
ReplyDeleteI propose a merging of UTS and FS called Underneath the Freakshow:
For 13 billion years you shake
like a freak
stuck in the middle of the room
as the waaaaaaaaaves break
I see what you're saying Cat. I think perhaps the issue is more in the production than the actual style of the songs. To use your example, I didn't really care for Jupiter Crash too much for a long time. It was really only live versions that got me enjoying it, because I hated the production of it. Now, if JC was produced to fit onto Disintegration or Wish I'd probably have liked it much better from the start.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love All I Want and A Thousand Hours, and in some ways it's weird to have them on an album with HHH or WCIBY, but it works in that case.
To put it yet another way - we have a pretty good sense of what these singles will sound like. It concerns me what will have to be done to UTS in order to make it sonically "fit" into the same album as FS.
Totally gotcha, pills, and I agree with you. The KM link is analagous as well. Anyway, well said. :-)
ReplyDeletePS How about a merging of UTS and AKOS? Anyone? Anyone?
Cat - why can't you just leave UTS alone??
ReplyDeleteStop the insanity!!!!
(But if anything - Down Underneath the Stars)
;)
How about a triple merge: Watching Me Fall Down Underneath the Stars?
ReplyDeleteWatching me faaaaaaaaaaaaallllll...down under...neath the stars...
Gooey Curey mixes are yummy and good for the soul....
shut up, all of you. i have an announcement.
ReplyDeleteOh no Cat - my ears hurt just at the thought of that.
ReplyDeleteMonkeybutt - you watch Strangers with Candy? I just had a flash of Jerri Blank barging in, throwing things off the desk and yelling "I've got something to say!"
no, pills, never watched it.
ReplyDeleteI really don't know why, but at the very moment, I am conviced we get a DARK album, dropped out the 4 singles, primarily BECAUSE:
ReplyDeleterob gets 50 next year and we all know how hes usually up around his centenary b-days. he began working on that album three years ago and maybe he first thought of an up-beat or a more poppy, "harmless" album but the closer his 50th came, the more he struggled with this decision and now ranges permanently between making a dark or a happy album (might also be the reason for the many delays) due to his 50th b-day WILL mean a momentous
landmark to him. i guess he sometimes feels quite unhappy with a poppy thing branding that essential era.
btw: i don't have to write that our rob by far is capable for those moves.
Hmmm, it would be another kick in the teeth to the music industry if this happens but I can't see it someone. But maybe it will.
ReplyDeleteChanging the subject slightly, i'm kinda dissappointed AKOS won't be on the album. Out of the new songs (the produced ones) its the heaviest and it has a great guitar riff.
It sounds a lot like A Japanese Dream but for both AKOS and A Japanese Dream to be left off their respective albums is saddening :(.
Bummer - it's quite a hilarious moment that's playing back in my head right now.
ReplyDelete/shutting up now to hear your announcement
sorry, no announcement. i just wanted you all to shut up. :D
ReplyDeleteOh snap...
ReplyDeleteA frivolous tidbit:
ReplyDeleteLooking back at the Friday I'm in Love video..actors dressed like Laurel & Hardy are mving the prps around...just connecting it to the Laurel kismet Hardy thing.
It's only recently that Bob was saying that he thought this album should be more upbeat, a way to celebrate so many years of still existing.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't fit well with the "I think I'm in the mood for a dark album, let's ditch the singles!"
Oh well.
Some people say: "it is stupid to left out the singles on the album"
ReplyDeleteWell it is not. Normally bands/singers release a single, than release the album and then release some more singles. Well The Cure has released 4 singles before release a album. So
for me it makes sense if they left out the singles, because you already heard 4 of the 11/12? songs anyway. It would be so nice !! And i hope it is true !
I was bitching on this blog about the singles and about me not loving The Cure as much as i did before. Well i have to admit: The perfect boy isnt that bad.
But i really hope the album is going to be a very dark album !!! Thats The Cure at his best !!
DarK Kure indeed rulz. Lusciously moody and angsty...mmmmmmmm....
ReplyDeleteThat said, would they continue to play these singles live if left off the album? I would hope so. Except SWID. They can put that one to rest. ;-)
So maybe the EP is a way of corralling all these singles together into a finished product, and then the album can be a more coherently dreary affair.
*drools at the thought*
The 'mix 13' thing is indeed pretty curious. I always assumed by this that the album versions of the songs would be different, even if just remixed subtly.
ReplyDeleteI hope the album songs are indeed better; the mix 13 singles, while great, could definitely sound better...it can't get worse than the general production for that last album though!
Any news on what kind of box the album will come in? I say this because it may be possible that the four singles and the remix ep may slot into whatever case the album comes in. If so this would make having the singles on the album obsolete if you are supposed to have the whole thing as a collection.
ReplyDeleteThen again the chances of this happening are so slim....Either way its a cool idea and sad they didn't go with it orginally like they planned.
Not much new info in this article that's not already known but hey The Cure are getting some press in the UK. It's hard to believe the singles didn't do better over there. Kind of sad but any news even if it is a little wrong is better then nothing at all. The more it's out in the public, the more people will find out & hopefully give it a listen.
ReplyDeleteHi All,
ReplyDeleteI can't find it, but I remember reading somewhere (probably here) that Robert Smith had mentioned that since he was not able to release a double album that he had found a sneaky way to get around that...
This would totally jive with the idea that the singels are not to be included on the album! 8 songs (singles & b-sides) might be the second disc? Just a thought.
