Ian McCulloch is NOT a Robert Smith fan

Well this is unfortunate. From the July issue of Record Collector. (Thanks Lars)

  2. At Inland Invasion in 2003, when Echo and the Bunnymen were playing mid-day he went on a rant about the festival was a joke and they should be headlining because they were the biggest band there.

They lost a fan that day, of the 6 "80's" bands playing that day they were the least entertaining.

    1. Echo had the "Sunset" slot which is usually bestowed as a sign of respect.

Further, as a band. From a purely musical performance standpoint, they gave the tightest, most proficient set of the day.

I think the Cure stole the show for obvious reasons, but it was a bit rough around the edges (as most were at the time due to Perry.)

    2. Perry was never that clean, was he? I still like him though. Just cuz he's a super sweet guy. I did like the way he played certain songs like Disintegration much better than porl imho.

  3. Ian McCulloch will put down anyone that is a threat to his supremacy. It's frustratingly endearing.

  5. Rude yes...but I have been a Bunnymen can about as long as the Cure..since 86. And Mac has always been a bit if a dick. The new record Meteorites is really good. Best in years. Mac needs to eat some humble pie for sure..but alas, ain't his nature :).

  6. Having had McCulloch (& Sargent) pull up to the bar next me & start chatting as if we were all jst average hacks (very friendly & unpretentious), I know him to be fairly pleasant in real life.
And we were @ the '03 Inland Invasion where he dropped the mic @ the end of their set and mumbled, "Now top that..." as a challenge to all acts following... I also remember half the audience left AFTER DuranX2 finished, leaving the ampitheatre to us rabid Cure fans...

McCulloch used to drink A LOTTA expensive licqour... IMO he's prolly piss-drunk & talking out-his-ass. Its all hollywood drama-press ~ "princess Di is wearing a new dress..." etc

  7. I read somewhere a funny anecdote about the Bunnymen in Brazil in the 80's. They were detained by police for drug possession. The policeman says "The Cure, huh?", Mac replies "No!" With a laugh he concludes they ended up in jail because they were not THE CURE.

    1. Think it was, they were stopped and lined up by armed police who said "The Cure?" but then let them go. Ian McCulloch said they were nearly shot, because they weren't The Cure!

  8. He's a mediocre lyric writer who seems to have a chip on his shoulder about contemporary bands who were more successful than his own.

  10. Saw him on a double bill with The Furs about 12 years ago. Echo went on first, and Mr. Mac. appeared pissed off the whole time. He just stood there singing with his arm propped up on the mic. Can't recall if he was smoking one after another the whole time, but feel like he was...

  11. Apparently there were about 200 people at the Echo concert in my city in 2010. Just saying. (I won't make comments about how a sub-Doors his band is, this time)

  13. That IS too bad. I didn't mind him slagging off Bono in the early 2000s, but this is unnecessary because The Cure is not ever-present and Robert Smith is awesome. McCullough is pretentious as hell, though. I recall him saying that U2 was like Michealangelo -- doing mainstream-ish art; in contrast, he preferred Leonardo Da Vinci; he wrapped up his statement by saying Echo and the Bunnymen were the Da Vinci to U2's Michaelangelo. Jeez. Will still check out the album -- before buying it, though! I haven't bought and Echo album since their 2001 release "Flowers". Their 2011 show, doing every song from their first 2 albums was fantastic, though.

  14. I have an old Bunnymen interview picture disc and on part of it Ian talks about how much he likes The Cure and wants to collaborate with Robert. Then Boris played on some of his solo stuff. And there's a couple photos of Ian and Robert together. So apparently this is new.

  15. If memory serves, Echo & The Bunnymen used to be RS' favourite til their follow up to Ocean Rain, after which he called them dreadful... so it's a little like the pot calling the kettle black (a day late and a dollar short, too, for some mixed metaphors), hey?

Really though, not defending The Cure's recent output but Echo & The Bunnymen haven't made a solid album for 30 years so it seems a little short-sighted to call out The Cure, yknow? The new one is third-rate U2 dreck anyway and as far as a story goes, it's not worth feeding (buuut here we are)

  16. I just imagined myself burning all of my echo and the dummymen cds. If only I knew where they were buried. SIGH !!!!!

  17. Echo and the Bunnymen? Yawn. Never really liked their music beyond the few catchy singles.

  18. Still a Bunnymen and a Cure fan. I miss the 80's when all my favorite bands would talk shit about each other. They never do that anymore.

  19. Thank you, Eric, for that insightful commentary.

When I saw EatB in 1997 there was definitely a roadie who kept bringing lit cigarettes out to Mac. I'm not surprised by this recent statement since he's always been a bit of a prima donna. I did give Meteorites a listen the day it came out and it might be great. One of those things you have to listen to once and then wait a month before hearing it again just to digest it, because it wasn't one of their color-by-numbers albums like everything since Evergreen.

  20. This is typical amusing McCulloch. It isn't even offensive; it is just idiotic. He wants to rival Shakespeare? Ha. So many of his lyrics are so trite, obvious and uninteresting. The early records are great, but everything since the initial break-up has been average at best. I do like Flowers and What are You Going to Do with Your Life, but they are still latter day Bunnymen records.

  21. I love the bunnymen, but Ian's always been a bit of an ass. Seriously, Shakespeare?
    This one comes close, hahaha:

You set my teeth on edge
You set my teeth on edge
    You think you're a vegetable
Never come out of the fridge

    C-c-c-cucumber
    C-c-c-cabbage
    C-c-c-cauliflower
    Men on Mars
    April showers
    Oh oh, oh oh

    Dream on, dream on...

  23. He is called 'Mac the Mouth' for a reason...

  24. I can't read it , its all just too small .... and thats with reading glasses on . all i've got to say though is the bunnymen rock and mac always did have a big mouth so nothing new there.

  25. mac says all this stuff for a reaction & never means it - he slagged bowie no that long ago. he's quite amusing, rather than a tool that morrissey has become

  26. Two E&tB shows at Irving Plaza in NYC went on sale in April and only one has (only recently) sold out. The Cure would sell out 2 shows at Irving Plaza in about 10 (maybe 17) seconds and then add 11 more shows and sell those out as well.Just sayin'. So, Shakespeare, Shmakespeare.
