Robert's 'Reflections' mixtape

Update 2: You can now download it from Modular.

Update:
Robert posted about this on the official site and added "HERE ARE A FEW SONGS WE USED TO LISTEN TO AS WE DROVE AROUND A SMALL WORLD IN A SMALLER VAN...sigh"

And this from the comments: "EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A CAT?...BUT NOT SURE ANY ONE OF US REMEMBERS THE EXTENDED MIDDLE BIT?!! RSX"

From Modular:
THE CURE - ROBERT SMITH'S REFLECTIONS & INSPIRATIONS
As the dust settles from those once in a lifetime The Cure: Reflections shows performed at the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Live 2011 - we've got something truly special to share with you today.

We asked Robert Smith what he was listening to as he worked on the first three masterpieces from The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds & Faith.

He came back to us with this very special mixtape, a collection of 10 songs that had an impact on him while he was making The Cure's first three albums. Take a listen (also on Facebook).

  1. Damn, that is a pretty great mixtape! Love seeing Elvis Costello on it. RS loved that Jazzmaster. : )

I'll say it again, we really need another Robert Smith guest DJ spot somewhere. Love the music he picks.

  3. Wonderful mix! The inclusion of Jimi at the Isle of Wight is so great. Lots of history in that...

  4. Just a thought.. If Roger chats with BBC radio Devon on a regular basis, maybe we could get him to give Robert a nudge to get in the DJ chair!!
He could be like Alice Cooper who has his own spot on an Australian station.. :)

  5. Every wants to be a cat (from the artiscats).

It's also in the medley of Why can't I be you (live version) that is on rarities (?) or elsewhere.
    Funny !

  6. this is somewhat bogus! compiling 3 different eras onto one tape. On the first album he was an anonymous guy with anonymous friends and the sounds would be different from the ones one year later, after touring with the Banshees and making friends with Severin among others (and Simon). And I distinctly remember that on Ten Imaginary Years RS states that it was the sound Wire were doing in 79 that made him want something different with 17 seconds.
Of course he remembers what he listened to (despite the blanks he had on 1980 and 1981) but he also tried to not to mention some stuff and enhance others...

  7. Pops - Yes, they included that in the extended versions of Why Can't I Be You? during the Swing Tour (and a few other times, too). Great versions! It also included bits of Young at Heart, That Old Black Magic, Moon River, and Lovecats at various shows.

  9. If you listen carefully, he whispers it in the 12 inch mix of Lovecats. By the way, I hope Mixed Up 2 includes all the 12 inch mixes from the original LP's including Just One Kiss, A Japanese Dream, and others.

  10. Quite an interesting and unique mix of songs. Love it DJ Robert! And it's true, EVERYONE WANTS TO BE A CAT! MEOW! I love how he has that song in the mix. He's has to do more of this soon.

  11. "EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A CAT?...BUT NOT SURE ANY ONE OF US REMEMBERS THE EXTENDED MIDDLE BIT?!! RSX" Yeah I never heard this version either, different, but still cool. I have had this on record/LP for a long time, but this mix is strange to me.

  15. Can't help with a Mac, but on PC you can just right click the link and "Save Link As".

  16. Fabian , I have a Mac... instead of opening the link, just "right click" the link and choose the "download" option :)
    Hope that helps!

  17. 'right click'? what 'right click'? there's no 'right' or 'left' button on my mouse.
But after a few attempts, the 'alt'+'click' combination seems to work. Why it didn't the first time I tried two days ago I don't know.
    Thanks for your help! :)

  20. with my MAC the right click option is not working either. For all sharing the same problem: just go to to "save page" in the top buttons and choose its format. It works well. THANKS FOR THE DOWNLOAD LINK! I am loving it!
