  3. Oddly enough, when I was 11, I found 'The Walk' on Cassette at The Wall record chain in Camp Hill, PA. At the time, I didn't know that it wasn't a common release.

It was the first time I'd heard "Just One Kiss." It was unlabeled as an extended version, and to be honest, the short version on Japanese Whispers and the LTGB 7" always felt lacking, as though the "extended" version wasn't really extended, just that the short version was shortened. (not a statement of fact, just perception)

Thanks for posting this, I love this song in this fashion!

  4. @SOLEDAD - The legality is questionable, I agree. But you can only purchase these songs on used vinyl. So to purchase them now wouldn't be putting money in Universal or the Cure's pocket.

Nobody's losing money in this instance. (except any record shop selling them on 2nd hand vinyl, and in which case a collector would be as likely to buy them regardless of their availability on the internet.)

  5. I understand your point of view, J, but don't agree, people should buy the original stuff (even though it's to a second-hand shop)... until the day when smith realize that it's about time to make all these old rare 12" remixes available... (maybe as a third disc with the Mixed Up reissue?)

  6. ohh ahh with someone like me not having the $50 for Join the Dots, getting these b-sides are a godsend :) Thanks so much!!

  8. Regarding the legality, considering that the band is planning on releasing "Mixed Up 2", as it's tentatively called, who's to say that these extended mixes won't be on there? Why not just go full bore, and put of the extended mixes of 'Inbetween Days', 'Close to Me', 'Hey You!' and 'A Japanese Dream' as well? :P Didn't copyright issues doom the a/v section on the original CoF?

By the way, I've had the 12" 'Let's Go to Bed' single for years, as well as the others mentioned above. I love the extended mix of 'Just One Kiss', and agree with J. regarding the perception that the extended version sounds like that's how the song was meant to be. Oh, and the studio version of 'LGtB' is listed as an "edit" on the back of the sleeve.

notdeadyet, you can find used copies of 'JtD' on Amazon.com for under $30.

  10. deadboycraved, thanks for the reminder about those other two extended mixes. Just for the record, the 'BDC' extended mix is listed as 'Boys Don't Cry (New Voice Extended Mix)', as it's an extended mix of a rerecording, not the original.

Also, regarding the remixes, after a bit more thought, perhaps Robert would instead put them on the bonus disc of a remaster of the first 'Mixed Up', instead of on 'Mixed Up 2'? In addition to the mixes already mentioned, there's also 'Let's Go to Bed (12" Duke Remix)' and 'The Lovecats (the 'TC & Benny' 12" Remix)' which were released via the 'Greatest Hits' microsite, so who knows what other unreleased remix goodies Robert has from that era, packed away in his archives? I'm sure that there's enough for at least an hour, so that's enough to justify a 'Mixed Up' remaster with a bonus disc.

  14. Isn't there a remix of 'To the Sky'? Is that an official remix, or one of those DJ remixes that ended up on bootlegs?

    ReplyDelete
  15. unofficial, as far as I've always been told.

  18. J., I've heard the remix to which you're referring. It's known as 'To The Sky (Resurrection Mix)', and it's unofficial, and, it seems, that it can be found right here:

The Cure--To The Sky (Resurrection Mix)

I just found that place a few minutes ago, and it seems that it's chock full of rare retro treasures. I'd recommend that everyone take a look when they have the chance.

  19. I actually found that site immediately after posting! It does seem pretty cool. The remix isn't bad, either.

While I love a completely new interpretation of a song via remix, I still have a soft spot for the 'extended' mix... I like to hear the little snippets of instruments otherwise buried in the original mix. (e.g. the acoustic guitar playing along with the strings in 'Icing Sugar')

Wishful thinking... wouldn't it be rad if Robert did a Trent Reznor, and put up some decent quality multi-tracks for fans to remix? It would be a fun promotion for a Mixed Up remaster....

I, for one, would love to take a whack at an industrial version of Fascination St... lots of album tracks that would be fun to toy with as well... too many to list... (Cut)...

  23. B., how does the presence of the Resurrection Mix of 'To The Sky' on a couple of remix compilations prove that it was an official remix? Also, can you explain why an official remix would be done for a track that was available only on a limited edition official label sampler and bootlegs until this past decade?

    ReplyDelete
  24. i don't think anyone said it was official

    ReplyDelete
  25. I deleted my post because, after reading it, I felt like it read a bit too strong for such a "nice" comment section.
The reason I know it was an official remix is because I'm a friend of one of the people who used to work for that remix service. All tracks were done with permission from each label. Remember, this was all done BEFORE the internet existed. When you actually had to talk to people ...
I'm not sure where you were 21 years ago when "Stranger Than Fiction" was released, but people who were in the music industry received promos of new releases, (especially if a label they work for - [say, the Art of Mix label, for example] was already working with Fiction on remixes).
Average consumers can't get their hands on label promos ... because they weren't supposed to. Maybe that's why most people (except for the really ridiculously hardcore Cure fans who would basically beg, borrow or steal for any new music) never heard Stranger Than Fiction until a really "usable" version of the internet came to be and file sharing started happening (ie - the past 10 years or so). You're thinking of the way things are now, and putting them back to the 90's. It didn't work that way.

  26. Hey Lindsey, thanks for your comment.
I think you should definitely start collecting vinyl. Ask all your friends and family to chip in and buy you a good record player and start your collection with some Cure 7"s and 12"s.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i've got a record player :)

and i used to buy records now and then a few years ago (before i was cure obsessed) and somehow i have nothing by the cure!

but it's been too long since i finished buying all the cds, and i think it would be a fun way to get the thrill of "new" cure stuff once in a while.

  28. I was still in elementary school 21 years ago, and had recently received a cassette copy of Michael Jackson's 'Bad', which I still have. It would be another three and half years before I'd hear of The Cure on a pay-per-view concert ad, and more than a year after that before I'd actually start listening to them, so that I could have something in common with a girl who I liked. I never did work up the nerve to say more than, "Hi," to her, but I've kept listening to The Cure, and have been a fan for a little over half of my life.

  29. i love vinyls. i have most of the cure 12 inches EP. i love to listen to them. shame you have to change a side every few minutes, but vinyl rules anyway!

  30. In response to J

"Isn't there a remix of 'To the Sky'? Is that an official remix, or one of those DJ remixes that ended up on bootlegs?"

Yes, one of those DJ remixes.

I have been collecting Cure music since 1987. I have all the official recordings, remixes, and live versions minus the PRIMARY 12" vinyl, I also posess too many
bootlegs, many are the same with different names. I am from Pasadena, so much of my record collecting had to come from different import shops many in Hollywood all the way south to San Diego, A lot of hunting for me and
when I found something, it was like Xmas. In 1992 my collection was almost complete(I could never find that PRIMARY, and I already had PLAY OUT on VHS, later I found the European version). Before the internet starting in 1990 till 96 I had to read a lot of magazines like Vox, Select, NME, Melody Maker to find out about any new Cure release. This new Deluxe Disintegration is the first time I used the internet to purchase anything Cure(concert tickets well that is another story).

In 1990 I got the HMV ENTREAT when it came out, this was the free green sleeve, for eight dollars at Hot Rock Records in Covina, also on this trip I found STRANGER THAN FICTION for thirty dollars. This was the first time I heard of TO THE SKY. In the summer of 91 I found a bootleg of the unplugged performance on vinyl, It also had the TO THE SKY remix with it. This was the first and not last time I seen this on a boot. I doubt the TTS remix was ever official, I can tell it was not even a remix at all. It was done with two copies of the STF cd and a cross fader, just cue, play, and toggle while recording. If you listen closely to the version of TTS on the A Thousand Virgins cd you can hear all the fades, very poorly done. This is just my point of view, there is another version of STF, STRANGER THAN FICTION PART 2 that came out on cassette in the U.S. it has TTS but I am sure its the same as the previous version, not a remix, that is why I did not bother to buy it. You can see it here http://www.on-fiction.com/TheCure/TheCure.htm

  31. 'to the sky' is present on both Stranger Than Fiction official records (cd and tape vol 2), and nowadays on Join The Dots.

I think like Sawn that the 'resurection mix' one can find on some boots is really unofficial. But B.Dee has a good argument.

How to find out? I can't see it the remix version on thecurerecords.com,

Maybe the guy B.Dee talks about at Art Of Mix didn't make it officialy? I'm not sure Fiction/The Cure gave their permission to remix this song. To the sky, the original song wasn't even supposed to be released in the first place!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Fabien i agree with you on that. Its just not official, I read in a interview that Robert never really like the song any way to begin with, so why would he have someone do a remix of it when he did not want TTS to come out on STF.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The so-called "Resurrection mix" of "To The Sky" is NOT official. It's a "Razormaid!"-style remix, simply cut-up and rearranged.

I actually prefer its arrangement to the original.

Unfortunately, every copy I've ever heard of it is either in mono or missing a channel (or both) - or is at the wrong speed.

Here is a version of it at the correct speed, in stereo, with the bit of guitar that the "Resurrection mix" cut out.
