  3. Like I have said before, I don't understand how these numbers can be so low...

Amazon.com's sales rank alone should provide higher sales, no?

  4. Those first week projections were pretty much spot on....

  5. AT Number 1 now on the Japanese Rock charts is "Obama Is A Beautiful World!"

  6. Wonder where it will turn up on Billboards Top Albums Chart or any chart of theirs for that matter? Anyone know???

I hope they can get much more sales in the US than this in the weeks to come!

  7. Obama should have kept one copy up during his victory speech: "I have a 4:13 dream!"

  8. billboard: # 16, 24,000. snow patrol outsold them.

  10. "The Cure" - #7, 91,000
    "4:13 Dream" - #16, 24,000

There's something disturbingly not right with that.

  11. what billbord chart is that ? why are there 200 different bloody charts fr the states?

  12. Thanks MB but which chart!

And brandon...I'd say little to no promotion from TMU is playing a bit into the lower record sales!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That's very true, but even Bloodflowers sold 71,000 in its first week, and there was scarce promotion for that one, too. I see BF also debuted at #16 though. So taking that into consideration, and album sales just being the lowest they've ever been across the board, maybe this is just the equivalent of where the band has previously performed on the charts...?

  14. ah, it's the billboard 200 albums. the main one.

  15. i'd link to it but i'm lazy. just go to billboard.com.

  17. Even Galore and Greatest Hits had higher first week sales:

  18. All of those numbers are for the official Billboard Top 200 chart.

  19. Mad Bob: Is that the official Mexican chart? Looks like that's just the Top Ten for that store.

  20. I think it has to definitely do with a lack of promotion from the label, but you have to look at where the music industry is at these days versus 2004. Just about everyone and their mother owns an MP3 player, downloading of the album before it was released and the fact they had the album available on myspace, which they were getting about 100,000 plays a day for the album, which is quite impressive. Some people might listen for free for a while before buying it. I still think this album is great and should have debuted much higher in the charts due to the quality of it as it has touches of Wish, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Head on the Door. The economy sucking right now sure doesn't help either.

  21. God thats f**** disappointing, but no sign of it's quality, I think given time it is going to gain traction!

Just listening to it again now, it gets better with each listen.....I have to say "The Reasons Why" is my fave, how can a song based on a suicide note be so sweet and beautiful, I think their best pop song in so long!

    Love love love it....

And I thought John Mccain was very gracious! manners show alot about a person
Yay also for the US....I am so pleased for you!

  22. and we all know touring is the way to make money these days, lets hope they can be bothered making another world trek....it gets harder each time I am sure.....

    ReplyDelete
  23. jay: exactly. it shows how physical album sales are down in a HUGE way. for example, greatest hits opened 42 spots lower when it came out back in 01, but sold 8 and a half thousand more copies....

    ReplyDelete
  24. These charts are ancient history! No one buys physical media anymore... it's all downloads now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Morris: The Billboard chart includes downloads.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There was no promotion whatsoever. I remember before "The Cure" came out there were actual BILLBOARDS for it hanging on Sunset Blvd here in LA.

There were articles all over the place for it, too (probably because of Ross Robinson).

For 4:13 Dream = nothing. Sleeping.

    Maybe it's an experiment...???

But you would think that 4 singles in 4 months that all reached the top 20 would have helped the album to fare better than 24,000 copies.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Alastair - I'm with you, another world trek would be just peachy!

    Legal downloads, that is.

Exactly my point the other day. Torrents ARE to blame. They hurt not help.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I should also add:

'Bloodflowers' also debuted at #16 (70,953 copies)

    *sigh*

    This hurts all musicians.

  30. Frankly, I think #16 is pretty good for the US mkt, as The Cure are not as big an act in the US as they are in Europe and Mexico.

You cannot compare sales figures from even 2004 to now .... let's face it Bit Torrents has killed the record industry. And the worse the economy gets, the more people will go to illegal downloads. I bet in 2004 that 21,000 units in a week would not have even have scored #30 in the charts ...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't think it's that bad, considering the lack of promotion, the market, the torrents, blah blah. Look at the new album of the "new" Queen with Paul Rodgers. It sank. Mostly because it sucked, though. I bet they were expecting giant sales of that...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bloodflowers debuted at 16th with 70000 copies sold and now Dream debuts at 16th with 24000 copies. Anyone still doubt less people buy CDs? lol

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't believe I'm saying this, but: back in my day, we had Napster, for crying out loud! I don't think that torrents and illegal downloads can be blamed for lack of sales, COMPARED TO anything from the year 2000 upwards. I myself downloaded Bloodflowers a month before it was released, and bought the album the day it came out (the same day I bought my 6-string bass, but I digress). Yes, illegal downloads hurt sales, but no more than 8 years ago.

Just a theory here: does anyone think that releasing so many singles hurt album sales? I find that the album sounds great start to finish, but having Freakshow appear on its own, out of nowhere, maybe that just scared off a whole lot of people early on. It scared me :)

Or, maybe it's just that people need to break out of the paradigm and accept that there's no keyboards now (to the extent of past albums, of course). I had a hard time figuring out the album until I just accepted that fact, and I've been liking it more and more ever since. Could it be it's a high enough hurdle to be hurting sales this much?

  34. I think, The Cure should go back to the minimalism of 17 Seconds.
That sound reflects more than ever the world today.

    ReplyDelete
  35. who gives a toss about sales? 24,000 people - the majority of whom love your record (even if they slag it off on blogs) - none too shabby

in the pre-Rome interview RS said they did things for the experience value now. they've made a great album. job done.

i love a different song everyday - sign of a classic - yesterday it was Switch, today THANWY

    ReplyDelete
  36. Good thought, Lass. Seventeen Seconds is my favorite album of all time and it would be interesting to see that sort of minimalism from The Cure again.

(I'm liking 4:13 Dream more than I expected, of course. It's missing that one little thing that would make it a great album instead of the very good album that it is, but I'm glad to see The Cure sounding like The Cure again this time around.)

    ReplyDelete
  37. 24000 in the US alone , what would the sales figure be worldwide for the first week ? Perhaps 60.000 or more ? Not bad for one week.

The Cure has a very stable fan base and instead of talking about attracting new people they better bet on the fan base. If they like an album they will excitedly tell their friends ... snowball effect.

    ReplyDelete
  38. And that critics choice review in People magazine certainly won't hurt....that magazine finds its way into every waiting area in the usa....old timers might be at the doctor and just happen to notice that the cure have an excellent new album out and add it to their christmas shopping. :) I plan on getting my sister a copy for christmas.
