The Cure, led by Robert Smith, always focused on artistry, not profits, says ex-drummer-keyboardist Lol Tolhurst


An interview with Lol, ahead of the Rock Hall induction. It says (I assume confirmed by Lol) that 8 of the 10 Cure inductees will attend the induction. Robert, Lol, Pearl are said to be going, and I would assume the other 4 current Cures will be there, so that's 7, but who is #8? Perry, Boris, or Michael?

"That’s despite having sued Smith over rights to the name not long after his dismissal. The two have since reconciled their friendship — hence, the reunion shows — which is one reason why Tolhurst will join Smith and six other current or former members of the band on the stage at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday, March 29, when the band is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2019."

"Perhaps Thompson, who will be part of the entourage on the Barclays stage, was the “only natural musician,” but the entire band shared a love of music that was as much a part of their DNA as their English accents."


Also, and this is just getting silly now, the way these people can't get this simple thing straight, Robert did NOT tell that album news to ME. It was in a radio interview with 5FM in South Africa. You can listen to it here. 

Update: Heard from Lol and this interview was done just after the inductees announcement was made last year. At the time, he had no idea if any of them would go. So this guy is just speculating on his own, as I doubt he spoke with Robert or Pearl.

New interviews with Robert


While in South Africa, Robert did two radio interviews. The first was with John Maytham for CapeTalk. This one caused a bit of confusion, as Robert said they had just recorded their first album in 10 years. But when NME picked up the story, they changed "recorded" to "finished", and every other site just copied their inaccurate story, giving the impression that the new album was finished and due out any time now.

The second was with Nick Hamman for 5FM. Robert clarified the new album situation, saying "We've just started, not quite finished, recording our first new album for 10 years".

The Cure are "confirmed" to attend the Rock Hall induction Ceremony


While the Hall says they are attending, there still hasn't been ANY public confirmation from the band. Complete radio silence on this from both The Cure and Trent Reznor. Still, I remain confident that they'll be there and probably play. We'll know for sure very soon.

Awful news from Andy Anderson

From Andy on Facebook:

Hi guy’s, I am and I have Terminal 4 Cancer, and their is no way of returning back from that, it’s totally covering the inside of my body, and I'm totally fine and aware of my situation I've gone for a no resuscitation, with that, I have a next of kin, in place and there is no way I would want them to be looking me as a vegetable, if I were to survived a resuscitation, because it may well involve the possibility of sustaining cracked ribs and Brain Damage, and I would hate to lay that on anyone. Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy will be discussed over the next few days, hopefully I’ll be able to get back to get to you in the next few days about the outcome, and please, No Boo, Hooing, here, just be positive, for me it’s just another life Experience and Hurdle, that one has to make yet another Choice in life, be cool, I most definitely am and positive about the situation , well that’s it for now, good folk, and thank you all for the well wishes I love them all, and are held very, very close to my heart dearly, and will stay with me for ever, any way, stay well yourselves and chat soon. Ax.

Andy, we all love you so much!  Your dignity and strength in facing & battling this is truly inspiring. We are all sending you positive thoughts and all the love in the world to help you in this fight. I hope you know how many people out here care about you and are hoping this goes as painlessly as possible. I truly am at a loss for words over this. All the best to you, Mr. Anderson. And thank you so much!

Update (Feb. 26th, 2019): Unfortunately, the bad news is true. Andy Anderson has passed away. Confirmed with Lol.
This is hard. We knew this day was coming, but I wasn't expecting it so soon. The one good thing is it wasn't prolonged with years of pain. We don't know the details and might never know, but I like to think it went quickly, and Andy was spared too much suffering.
I didn't know Andy & sadly never had the chance to meet him, though I wanted to so badly. But I cherished every interaction I had with him. Every tweet, DM, and email, he was always so kind & always in such good spirits. He was a joy to talk to. Always a laugh & a virtual smile.
So we've lost our first Cure, and it hurts. Badly. But remember what Andy told us above. So be sad for a bit, but remember the great man & all of the music & good times he gave us. We loved and still love you, Andy. Thank you! Now go make your "special tea" for the spirits. :)

The Cure to play Disintegration 30th Anniversary shows in Australia



Note: The shows in Australia are being billed as the debut of the Disintegration 30th Anniversary show. More shows in other cities are likely to be announced soon. This will most likely NOT be your only chance to see this show. No guarantees of course, but I'd bet good money we'll see more.

Exclusive to Vivid LIVE, alternative rock legends The Cure will bring their magisterial, slow-burn masterpiece Disintegration to the Opera House Concert Hall for four shows to mark the 30th anniversary of their career-defining epic. This is the world premiere of these 30th anniversary performances, and their only Australian engagement.

From the plaintive romance of 'Pictures of You' to the swooning 'Lovesong', from the sinister plucks of 'Lullaby' to the delirious 'Fascination Street', from the glacial sweep of 'Plainsong' to the desolate 'Untitled', The Cure’s eighth album – a culmination of their moody, mysterious sensibilities in all their grandeur – is often considered their greatest, a widely influential high water mark for one of rock’s most beloved and enduring bands.

Rumor: Cure to play Glastonbury?


Rumors have been going around since last year that The Cure might headline Glastonbury this year, and those rumors have picked up steam lately, with UK bookies making them the favorites. It should be pointed out that until a few weeks ago, the bookies had Paul McCartney as the other favorite, and that was wrong, so keep that in mind. If they do play, tickets are sold out, but there will be a resale in April, for any returned tickets. If you are interested in trying for these tickets, make sure you register here. The Cure and The Killers are tipped to complete the line-up of headliners at Glastonbury 2019, say the bookies.

The Friday I'm In Love legends have been given 2/5 odds of topping the bill on the Pyramid Stage at the Somerset Festival, with the Mr. Brightside rockers given odds of 8/11.

Betway's Alan Alger said in a press release: "With Stormzy already announced, rumours continue to circle on who will be Glastonbury’s second and third headliners.

“The Cure are no strangers to the Somerset festival and we make them the 2/5 favourites to rock it out once again, with the market suggesting The Killers at 8/11 are likely to join them.

The Cure have headlined Glastonbury three times already, last playing Worthy Farm in 1995.

Speaking to the BBC about the possibility of playing the festival again in 2018, frontman Robert Smith said: "Yeah, maybe. We haven't had a happy history with Glastonbury over the years."Although we've headlined three times, we've never been on the best of terms.

"I don't know if they forgive and forget. There are enough other festivals for us to play."

Reeves WILL be inducted with The Cure

When it was announced that The Cure had been selected for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the list of Cure members eligible was missing 4 names - Reeves Gabrels, Andy Anderson, Phil Thornalley, and Matthieu Hartley. On Monday it was revealed that the Hall had reconsidered and Reeves will now be inducted with the rest of the band. Before this change was made, I'm told there was a good chance that the band might decide to skip the event, but are now more open to it. Still not confirmed but looking better. Maybe.

Congratulations to Reeves, and Thank You to those who made the change possible! Unfortunately, Andy, Phil and Matthieu are still excluded.

Fun Fact from @NickDBambach: "The Cure is now one of the few bands inducted with 10 or more members inducted. Only Parliament/Funkadelic (16) and The Grateful Dead (12) have more members inducted than The Cure [The E Street Band and The Comets also had 10 members inducted too]."

Rock Hall live simulcast in Cleveland

If you can't make it to Brooklyn for the Rock Hall induction, but CAN get to Cleveland, the Rock Hall will be hosting a live & unedited simulcast at the Hall of Fame. Story from WKYC:

CLEVELAND – Here’s your chance to be a part of rock ‘n’ roll’s biggest night.

If you can’t travel to New York to experience the 2019 induction ceremony in person, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is hosting a special simulcast that night.

Other than sitting in the audience at the Barclays Center, the Rock Hall's simulcast is the only other place in the world you can watch the March 29 inductions live and uncensored. An edited version of the induction ceremony will air on HBO at a later date.

Tickets for the simulcast party are $75, and go on sale to the general public on Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. Rock Hall members can purchase their tickets a few days early on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. at a discounted price of $50.

Doors for the party open at 6:30 p.m. with the induction starting at 7 p.m.

Simulcast tickets will include access to all Rock Hall exhibits and the entire broadcast of the ceremony. The All-Access Cafe will be open serving up dishes from some of Cleveland's celebrity chefs, and cash bars will be available.

Rock Hall 2019: 30 best albums from this year's class.


Cleveland.com put together a list of their top 30 albums from this year's Rock Hall inductees, and The Cure had 6 on the list:

2. The Cure – “Disintegration” (1989)

Not only is “Disintegration” the Cure’s creative masterpiece. It’s quite simply one of the greatest rock albums ever made. Not surprisingly, the album became a huge success on the strength of singles like “Love Song” and “Pictures of You.” But it’s the album emotionally devastating material that grounds it. This is gothic rock 101 and the foundation of emo music heading into the 1990s.

12. The Cure – “The Head on the Door” (1985)

It’s the album that made The Cure a big success and remains one of its most enduring (and endearing) bodies of work. And all it took was the band lightening up a bit. On the heels of some truly dark material, Robert Smith embraces pop music more than ever, leading to some of The Cure’s most iconic moments, like “Close to Me,” “Inbetween Days” and “Push.”

16. The Cure – “Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me” (1987)

“Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me” is all over the place, almost always for the better. Robert Smith and company don’t get bogged down in moodiness. In fact, the band doesn’t get locked into one style at all. For every moment of sadness, The Cure goes big with its sound as well, highlighted by the brilliant “Just Like Heaven.”

19. The Cure – “Pornography” (1982)

“Pornography” was a huge leap forward for The Cure, even if the album wasn’t a huge hit. It’s just as dark as “Faith” but with more bite to it. The Cure would surpass it with albums that followed. But “Pornography” was a major piece of the puzzle for future masterpieces.

23. The Cure – “Faith” (1981)

Believe it or not, “Faith” may be a bit dark even for diehard fans of The Cure. But that’s part of its brilliance. Robert Smith was one moody dude. But it’s Simon Gallup on bass that sets the tone. “Faith” is an album steeped in sadness. But there’s beauty within the gloom.

28. The Cure – “Seventeen Seconds” (1980)

The Cure’s debut felt like more straightforward power-pop and pop-driven punk. But the band’s sophomore effort, “Seventeen Seconds,” sits in the darkness. It’s the first true indication of Robert Smith’s emotionally haunting vision, with lyrics about fear, doubts and insecurities. It’s not as gloomy (or quite as powerful) as an album like “Faith.” But “Seventeen Seconds” foreshadows everything great about The Cure in the 1980s.
