What we might expect from '4:14 Scream'

Going back through some of the old 4:13 era articles and some more recent stuff, and thought it would be fun to put together a list of songs that might be included on 4:14 Scream.

Songs that could be on it:
A Boy I Never Knew
Please Come Home
(Both of these were from 'The Cure' sessions, but said to have been re-recorded during the '4:13' sessions)

Strum (from 'The Cure' sessions)
Lusting Here In Your Mind (from the '4:13' sessions)
Christmas Without You (from the '4:13' sessions)
An unknown number of instrumentals (from the '4:13' sessions)

Spot Marks The X (from the '4:13' sessions)
16 (from the '4:13' sessions)
Thanks to fmjews for finding these titles from an early tracklist that Ideal Copy had up in 2008. Not sure if these are missing songs or just working titles for songs we already have.

Robert speaking with XL (June 2012): "But for sure, before our public farewell, we'll release the record. It'll be the continuation of the previous one and it'll be accompanied by the DVD of our show in Paris in 2008 and perhaps by a live show from this summer. It will be slow and full of emotions. The typical Cure-sound."

On 'Lusting Here In Your Mind', Robert told Billboard (July 2007), "It sounds suspiciously like heavy rock to me". He also mentioned 3 songs were old Cure demos from the 80s that they revamped. We know 'Sleep When I'm Dead' (from The Head on the Door era) was one, but what are the other two?

In an NME interview (March 2012), Robert said he "has 12 tracks, including instrumentals, that he wants to release, but only as part of a double 4:13 album." In that same interview, he says 4 songs on '4:13' should be on '4:14', and 4 on '4:14' should be on '4:13'. Hoping Robert will tell us which ones should be switched, then we can all make proper versions of the albums, the way he originally envisioned them.

Robert told UOL (April 2013) the following: "my personal favorite is the album that we're about to launch. I think it's definitely my favorite kind of music. There's a song on the album called "Christmas Without You". It's the best song I've ever written."
The song (which was said to be about the death of a close friend) was recorded during the '4:13 Dream' sessions. In this Blender interview (March 2008), Robert called it “one of the most unhappy things we’ve ever recorded”, and told Billboard (July 2007), "That's not a very happy song".

Can't find the interview,  but Robert did say that there would be more keyboards on '4:14' than there were on '4:13'.

Overall, the tone of the album should be "dark", as it was always referred to as the darker half of the 2 albums. However, as Robert said, he had to switch a few songs up, to give '4:13' a bit more balance, so it's not out of the question that there could be some lighter moments on this one. Just hope and pray there's not another 'The Only One' on this! :)

    2. Don't forget that Robert and Co need to keep some songs back so they can repackage the Deluxe Versions. Or maybe hold it back for Join The Dots Part II.

Seriously, you know at some point we are going to see yet another (and well deserved) More Greatest Hits record, which will include all the singles since Bloodflowers up to the present.

      That just makes sense...YO!

    3. ABINK is very difficult to play for Jason... we all remember that famous video of Robert being angry with Jason because he screwed up the drum intro.
Robert even went to talk something to Simon during the song... they both looked at the scared Jason... :/

  3. The 4 songs from 4:13 that should be on 4:14 - I'm thinking Underneath The Stars, Switch, The Scream and It's Over (Baby Rag Dog Book would have been such a better title for that song!)
Or maybe The Only One of course Craig :)

    1. Yeah, The Scream seems like an obvious choice, given the title of this new one.

Interesting point about UTS and It's Over. If they were intended for Scream, not Dream, I wonder what would have opened and closed Dream? And will they seem out of place on Scream?

Or maybe Robert changes it up and opens & closes with an instrumental? I could go for that.

    2. Opening and closing with an instrumental would be great :)
Fair point about UTS and Its Over being the opener and closer on Dream but hard to see many other songs fitting on a 'darker' album don't you think?

    3. 'UTS' on the dark album? No. More like 'SWID', 'Switch', 'The Scream', and 'It's Over'.

    6. I am completely alone here: "The Only One" is my favorite song on 4:13 (personally I can´t stand this name for an album), followed closely by "The Reasons Why" and "UTS". The worst ones I consider "The Hungry Ghost", "It´s Over" and the worst Cure song ever, "Freakshow".

      Delete
    7. Me either, I don't share that opinion about "The Only One", to me isn't great but not bad. Really bad song is "The Scream".

      "Freakshow" awful
      "Switch" bad song
"This. Here and Now. With You" awful poor
      "Sleep When I'm Dead" poor
      "Scream" awful
      "It's Over" poor

The Only One is not a problem

    10. Here is my opinion:

"The Scream" better live, but a good tune
"Freakshow" - perfect silly pop song
"Switch" - It grew on me
"This. Here and Now. With You" - Love it..great lyrics!
"Sleep When I'm Dead" - I agree...not my favorite (but my kids like it)
"It's Over" - Great ending to the record and sounds great live

The Only One is not a problem - I agree!

    11. I'm okay with The Only One. It does sound better on vinyl. Then again, the whole album does. Then again, I'm waiting for anything that matches up to 3IB - Wish period. Then again, I still like a few scattered things after that period. Then again, I also like Club America. Then again, I kind of only like in this obtuse way because the guitar line really does seem like something that was eventually going to come from The Cure. And I'm still trying to find a video of when Porl played it with them. Always wanted to see him play that lead.

    12. All Kinds of Stuff is fucking brilliant!!! So is Its Over & The Scream cant understand why people dont like them?

  6. I remember in interviews about the record label being against a double album, Robert commented that they said; "We know what you're trying to do," with respect to releasing four singles/b-sides. Though he may have been joking, I wonder if the four b-sides were intended for the full double album, and, if so, where do they fall on the light/dark speculation?

  7. I think the 3 most underrated songs on 4:13 are Switch, Real Snow White, and This. Here and Now. With You.

And I know everyone else seems to hate it, but I really like Sirensong. And It's Over really grew on me. Didn't care for it at first, but rarely skip it now. I also like the weirdness of The Scream, though I skip it a lot. Have to be in the mood.

My 3 favorites from those sessions remain UTS, All Kinds of Stuff, and NY Trip.

    1. I love Sirensong, a lot. When I heard it, I thought that "this is the type of song I've been waiting to hear by the Cure". I think a lot of it has to do with Porl's lapsteel guitar. I've said it before, but all and all, I think 4:13 is a very strong album. The production gets in the way for me, though.

      Delete
    2. I'm a fan of Sirensong as well! Not so much Switch or The Scream though. Always loved It's Over, brilliant song.
Hadn't thought about the b-sides and how they fit into the light/dark thing, the dream ones seem more dark than light from memory though.

      Delete
    3. A lot really depends on what Robert would consider "dark". Is Underneath the Stars dark? It's down-tempo, but certainly more "dreamy" than dark. Whereas "The Reasons Why" is dark lyrically, but lighter musically. But, I don't want to read into it, too much. Either way, I'm looking forward to what comes.

      Delete
    4. The only one is the worst song on 4:13 for me. I think Freakshow is a good song struggling under dreadful wah-wah guitar and bad mixing. Sirensong, It's Over and The Scream are great! I love THANWY too. That song loud on headphones is fantastic!!

      Delete
    5. I preferred 'It's Over' when it was called 'Baby Rag Dog Book'. The band played it with more punch back then.

  8. Nice idea to gather in one place all the available info about the new album Craig. :)

I was thinking about the songs that could be in the album too.

My guessing includes all the ones you posted except the instrumentals, which I couldn´t remember.

At some point I´d like to listen both version of the songs recorded in 2004 and re-recorded in 2008.

So this new release is the one they recorded back in the same "Dream-Scream" sessions but...

What will happen with the Porl parts?

Roger & Reeves have any participation in this album?

The Robert/Simon/Jason parts remains unchanged since 2008?

If the tentative title or a slight variation is confirmed that means Robert wants to link it undoubtedly with the 4:13 Dream. And with this release, the circle is closed.

Maybe after these events, the band have the wish to record new stuff, inspiration of this great current line-up.

    :)

  11. For an unknow reason, I listened 4:13 Dream songs on saturday and sunday, just before the press release.

4:13 b-sides are good songs, I like them all. Without You is great to my ears.

But in the top of that, I hope for a perfect mix this time. No excesive effects over voice, music and these awful compressed sound. That took off a lots of points to 4:13.

We have plenty of examples of how mixing should be.

In fact, I think Robert complained about that and he said he wanted to mix it properly again, am i remembering correctly? If so and he already did that too, why not release the new mix as well?

  19. Way too much negativity going on here about a record that hasn't even been released. If I read "the MIX on" these blog responses any more, I am going to puke in my mouth.

If someone isn't complaining about the lie of MIXed Up 2 not being released, they always can complain about the original mix of Entreat and how incredibly worse the MIX of Entreat Plus is, or how bad the MIX for 4:13 Dream was or that the self title The Cure record didn't get a proper MIX. UHHHGGG!!!

How about switch it up and talk about what you liked? I like The Cure...period! They don't have any reason to put out more music unless it's something they are proud of. Robert and Co don't tour the world for dollars and they certainly aren't showing up at the RAH because they have to.

So...on the positive side, how about we talk about The Cure's Charity Work?

Has anyone noticed that almost every live album that they have released has dedicated the profits to charity? Dating back to Show, Paris and Bestival? What about the shows that they perform, such as the Teenage Cancer trust? How fuckin awesome is that they are at a place in their career where they can actually contribute to something (beyond their f'n amazingly timeless music) and make a positive impact on society...now that's something to get in MIX about! (yeah, not that clever, but trying to spread some positivity around these parts).

Or, how about this...Craig is f'n awesome for providing this forum. He's done it for years and deserves some kudos! Does anyone think that they played Burn because Craig was in the audience? I do...and that's fucking brilliant! Thanks Craig...you fuckin rock!

Go to curefans.com if you want to post some negativity...OK?

A special vinyl variant will be released on Record Store Day, which is April 19th.

  23. On the Charity Front, here is what I quickly came up with:

Bestival 2011 - All profits from the sale of the CD will go to the Isle Of Wight Youth Trust

Paris - The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is gratefully receiving 50% of the recording royalties payable
to the Cure and Fiction Records in support of international relief work.

The Cure Cover John Lennon's Love - I don't remember which charity, but the profits went someplace...I think the Red Cross

A few shows for Teenage Cancer Trust

  31. wow a lot of hate for 4:13 and folks wanting smith et al to rehash older stuff (music factory?). agree with some comments about some of the weaker tracks on 4;13 (freakshow, scream) but with innovation and experimentation you will get a few less favorable results but also a chance of some real diamonds. Disintegration is held up as probably the greatest cure album but it could so easily have been head on the door 2, which would of been fine but no disintegration?
as with most albums i find that opinions change over time ie i used to skip "it's over" but hearing it live changed my opinion and on my 1st few plays of disintegration I would skip fascination street.
summary: stop whining and skip the tracks u dont like - very few artists have albums with 100% of songs that are universally loved.

    2. I wouldn't think so. This should be just the material they recorded back in 07/08. Newly mixed probably, and possibly some things re-recorded or bits add, but essentially the tracks from those 4:13 sessions.

Anything newly written/recorded would be saved for a new album, I would think.

  33. Well because this is a new record, and things and moods might change in a 6 years timeframe, with new blood in the band, and enriching experiences.. So I expect this new album to be a new album, based on past recorded material, rearranged maybe, but also new one. Would be surprised if we had a full record without any Roger notes, or Reeves riffs.

  36. I would be disappointed if the b-sides to the 4;13 dream singles were included on the "new" album, as I have heard them all before, and I'm really longing for some "new" material. It's a same though, because Down Under is one of my favorite cure songs, and NY Trip and All kinds of stuff were all songs which all belonged on 4:13 dream, rather than some of the embarrassing stuff such as the Real Snow White, Reasons Why and This. Here and Now. With You. The only one is pleasant, and it's alright. Any complaints against it are equally leveled against Mint Car, in the sense that it's Cure by numbers pop.

    1. ??? Why should any of the B-Sides be on the album? They are released already. 4:14 Scream is about the stuff that's been left over.

    2. Thanks, that's pretty much what I've already said. Take your hostility elsewhere.

    3. Mint car, I think, is a better song. It at least has a challenging solo guitar part that really stands out.

  37. This is an awesom post but I never believe Robert about upcoming releases until I'm holding it in my hand. He's notorious for announcing a new album that doesn't come out for 3-5 years!

  38. i m very upset cos robert is still thinking that 4 :13 dream sessions ( 4 :14 scream) is better than Wish deluxe edition i already heard 14 songs from Wish era and are marvelous but i don t care 4:14 scream cos i don t want to ear robert screaming like crazy again with bad songs beside he want to come out the dvd from paris 2008 who cares? what happen with reflexions show? nobody realized that robert spent 5 years cos he can t composed 10 new songs so he decided after 5 years to come out the dark album of 4;13 era..he s out of mind i can t believe it...it s just my opinion i m sorry

    2. Thank you for finding that! I wonder if 16 & Spot Marks The X were working titles for songs we already have? I can't remember.

I know Please Project became The Only One and Don't Say Anything became Freakshow, but can't remember any others.

    3. It's a really strange tracklist: we have the 4 singles, 3 songs played at the 4tour (uts, abikn and it's over). Of the 6 remaining songs just the hungry ghost is on 4:13 dream...

  40. as mentioned elsewhere it would nice if 4:14 comes out in various forms ie single album, double as it was intended etc. most importantly get the mix & production right on this.

  41. production was really bad indeed

  42. I think a lot are mistaken about which might be the 4 to-be-swapped songs !!

Robert said several times that the first album was more "UP-BEAT" and the second more "Slow and Emotional".

So I don't think the emphasis is that much on "Dark" but more on "Slow and emotional".

So with that in mind, my gues at the 4 songs would be :)

    - Underneath The Stars (most obvious imho)
    - Siren
    - The Perfect Boy (very tentatively)
    - The Scream (slow BPM stuff like he described already in 2002 I think in the Trilogy bonus interview)

Other songs, on the contrary that might be darkish but actually up-beat:

    - Switch !!
    - It's Over

  43. I'd think of a slow emotional album of one you can listen to before going to sleep :)

  46. I predict they will release it on April 13th. It only makes sense, although it doesnt fall on the traditional Moday release date in the UK, April 13th is a sunday, maybe put it up on ITunes April 13th and release it in the shops Monday and Tuesday in the US

  49. Im still waiting for Wish Deluxe with hopefully Lost Wishes and a good quality sound recording of Away (which is so much better then Cut) & The Big Hand from Playout

  50. The Cure changed A LOT since 1993 when Porl and Boris decided to leave the band.

After great albums like THOTD, DISINTEGRATION, WISH, we had 4:13, WMS and the boring BLOODFLOWERS...

  51. No a single word from Robert about this supposed communiqué ??....no details have emerged until now...i'm suspicious now ......???
