From Talenthouse: Secret 7" is an exciting project combining music and art in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Seven bands and recording artists are inviting creatives to design the artwork for a seven inch vinyl sleeve inspired by one of their songs. The project will culminate in 700 unique vinyl sleeves displayed in Idea Generation Gallery in London in the week leading up to Record Store Day 2012. On that day, each of the vinyls at the gallery will be available to purchase with all of the profits going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

In this challenge, The Cure have selected the track 'Friday I’m In Love’ and are inviting creatives to interpret the song, however they please, via an original piece of seven inch artwork. This is an incredible opportunity for aspiring artists and designers to collaborate with one of the world's most loved bands, to have their artwork seen by millions, be exhibited alongside established artists and in the process, raise valuable funds for Teenage Cancer Trust.

  4. This is weird because I actually have a visual idea for a 7" cover for "Halo" that has been stuck in my head for years and I need a graphic designer to help me bring it to life.

  5. ChristianZ - you have my attention.. If you have a facebook account, PM me (Tim Sorensen) and attach a jpeg of your design if you have one or give me an overview of your concept and we'll see where it goes from there.. Maybe include your email address in the FB PM too..

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks, Tim. That'd be great if you could help me finish this. I did a search on Facebook and only one "Tim (not Timothy) Sorensen" came up, but I would guess it wasn't you. Then again I could be wrong. My last name is Ziebarth and you can currently identify me at Facebook by my profile pic showing me dressed as The Phantom of the Opera. You can also just e-mail me at ChristianZ@netscape.net. Either way.

  13. completely unrelated but cure spotting I guess...dint know PW had written a book called that!! another nicked title!!

Patrick White's novel The Hanging Garden, which he put in a drawer in 1982 when he became distracted by theatre, has been transcribed and will be published by Knopf in April. Set during World War II, it's about two children who form a bond when brought to shelter at the Hanging Garden on the cliffs of Neutral Bay.

  14. My vote is for Kelly Reiter, then Paul Cooper... I had the same idea as Kelly, though I would had put a blurred person(daydream state expression) in there with the calender focused in the background, same hues though. Basically a cross between the "Pictures Of You" cover, and Kelly's piece. Less is more, good job Kel! I love it!

I just cropped off what i wasn't able to design in

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, I mulled over whether to keep the template, but finally decided to take the instructions in my own literal way... They said to "design" within the white box, but didn't say we had to *submit* artwork that way. I might not be right, but that way it's not shrunk down quite as much.

  33. Daria's is a real creation. Her style made me think of Georges Mélies whose universe would heve fitted pretty well with The Cure's, and also of Gustav Klimt who might have inspired Porl's artwork for the band and his own paintings. Some others are nice but this one is a cover, and an impressive and creative one. Bravo !

  49. Just a heads up, I received a response from Talenthouse to my question regarding submitting your work within the white box of the template. They looked at my submission and contacted me to let me know that it has to be submitted within the template provided. Even if it is the right dimensions, which mine was, they said I had to resubmit so my design was within the white box of the template. I was succesful in resubmitting mine, and would advise others to do the same, or risk having your submission disqualified. Good luck everyone.

  53. @MojoJackson:

Jeeze. I asked the same question and got a different answer: "Again, you do not have to include the grey box around your design but make sure you keep the same dimensions." But I used the template anyway, just in case. I wish they would get the story straight... I would hate to see so many people disqualified! Thanks for sharing the info.

the guidelines for this contest don't make sense... may as well have added, "all work must be created while blindfolded" "and with the lights out"
    (rules are for fools)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't understand the issue of using a template.

It's used as a guide so all submissions are the right size for a potential sleeve cover..

If a template wasn't used and they didn't tell us what format they wanted it in, there would have been all sorts of file size/format/submission issues..

Every competition has a set of rules..

  61. re: format ~
they specified a 300dpi image under 5mb saved in some universal file type, ie; .jpg, .tiff, etc...

don't think using their template is necessary, but it'll help ppl who use less complicated software & may have difficulty determining resolution.

there are many issues w/ Talenthouse which makes me wonder if they're really connected w/ the artists they claim to represent: their website navigation functions don't work properly, the guidelines are ridiculous ("create apple art without using an apple or spelling the word apple"), etc

    ReplyDelete
  62. @filthypit - re: guidlines.. My guess is this is because of copyright reasons..

My other guess is the song title/band name will be added at a later stage when the design choices have been finalised..

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think that the reason song titles/band names aren't allowed is because it is a secret (Secret 7"). The records are auctioned off, and the purchaser only learns what song it is when they have it in their hand.

    ReplyDelete
  64. when i'm on

    http://www.talenthouse.com/design-for-the-cure-secret-7

I can't see all submitted work. Where to clic from there?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Um, yeah, the entire reason it's called Secret 7" is because you're not supposed to know who the artist is or what the song is:

"None of the buyers will know who created the sleeve, or even which song it's for, until they are holding it in their hands - the secret lies within."

It's supposed to be something fun, unique, and different. And the guidelines are given because the art, if chosen, needs to fit on a 7" sleeve.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm not so sure about this 'competition' anymore..

A deadline is a deadline, in my opinion and the newer submissions now have an advantage over the people who submitted their works on time..

What of the people who didn't use the template? Are their submissions valid? If it turns out they are then the competition really has no credability..

Sorry for whinging, but it's very frustrating..

All the best to those who have entered!
    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  75. Notherbob, I'm a bit grumbly about the ever-changing deadline too, but it's their contest so I guess they can do what they will with it.

As for the template though, I'd contacted both Secret 7" on their facebook page and the support on the Talenthouse site and got the same answer. The artwork doesn't have to be submitted with the grey border. As long as you've designed it to fit within the parameters of the white box, your entry is fine. Here's talenthouse's reply in their own words:

It is not required to submit your work with the grey border (some members have uploaded their work with it and some without it) but your artwork must be designed within the white box in the template provided. For now, just make sure to keep the same dimensions and if you should be contacted by the host, then you will be given more information on the actual size of the artwork.

    ReplyDelete
  76. About these crappy changes of deadline : perhaps The cure has begun to choose and hardly find the good 45 sleeves, maybe fed up with all these "heart designs" huh huh...?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi all... I'm a newbie, but I also submitted a 7" pic here:
    http://www.talenthouse.com/creativeinvites/preview/ade3648cdce9e7a5b01dbf5b0684ece3/373

    ReplyDelete
  78. The changing deadline has been frustrating for me as well. For one thing, it's hard to tell people to vote when you tell them a new date all the time. But if I would've known that I would have so much more time, I would have tried out several different designs and then decided on one. I started to make a new one this weekend, but realized I probably don't have time to finish it now. It's probably just time for me to move on to the next project.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I agree... the changing deadline is quite annoying. More than this, their website is difficult to navigate. I spent an hour just trying to find the full "terms and conditions", and most of their terms and guidelines are way too vague to be helpful. I LOVE the idea of this project... but the administration of it is another story. Oh, to wish impossible things...

    ReplyDelete
  80. Wait a second... If I'm a minor am I allowed to enter my painting? shit :( I hate being so close to 18.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I mean, I read the terms and conditions, but it's so unclear and I don't really understand what they mean... That really really sucks if I can't enter. I love this one :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hanners: It says you have to be the age of majority in your state, and checking on that, most states require you to be at least 18. A few are 19 or 21.

I was also surprised to see that you can't enter if you live in Florida. Odd.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah the Florida bit was pretty weird... ugh. Less than a year away from this 'age of majority'.

  118. Any idea when the winners will be notified? I know it's today, but anyone have an idea what time?

  119. Secret 7" posted this to Twitter this morning:

"The Cure's selections came in this morning! In the nick of time. Be patient with us, safe in the knowledge the band made the selections."

So I'm guessing it could take a while to notify everyone.

  120. Was just about to post that - You beat me to it, Craig! :)

  121. Awesome! Thanks for the update Craig!

  122. They said on their twitter yesterday that there are over 350 winners to notify, and that it could take them a couple of days to complete the process. Patience and good luck everyone! :D

  123. can't see the 5 covers. got a link to it? thanks g*

  124. I'm guessing they will conact everyone via email rather than through the talenthouse.com site..

If that's the case I'm in big trouble as the email I gave out was old and is not useable anymore.. GAH!!

  125. @notherbob - don't worry, I think they can contact you through Facebook if you connected your account up.

  130. Maybe you can contact them and let them know your name, talenthouse account and tell them your correct email address. They seem to be very responsive, I'm sure they will help you out.

  131. I can't take the suspense! I don't have too many hopes of winning, but I wanted to know for sure today so that I could close this chapter. Now, I'll be in suspense all week, wondering if they could slowly be making down their list towards me...

  132. Take a deep breath people! Everyone who poured their creativity and soul into their designs, take heart. Even if you are not chosen to be one of the "winners" - you can take pride in the fact that you contributed. Regardless of the final outcome, remember that Robert personally reviewed your design (and maybe he let some of the other band members choose too)! You also helped bring attention to the worthy cause of the Teenage Cancer trust by helping to generate millions of hits on the Talenthouse site. Congratulations everyone for being a part of this great project!

  133. Oh, I didn't have high hopes, but it's so exciting the suspense they're keeping us in! haha I can't wait to hear how much money they've raised and who Robert picked! :)

  135. posted this am on Secret 7's FB page, "The perfect place to listen to The Cure's sample vinyl... Fiction!!!"

Wasn't there a big stink over the Cure's contract w/ Fiction records? Didn't the Cure relinquish all profits from their recorded library when their contract w/ Fiction expired? If so, the label totally ripped off the band!!! (& the Cure's legal counsel was completely remiss in their representation)

Not to take away from the importance of its charitable benefactor, but I mean, wouldn't that put into question the whole Secret 7" promotion??? (if that were the case)(?)

    Hm-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m...

  136. This isn't the same Fiction from the old days. This is the revived 2004 Fiction imprint now owned by Universal.

  137. Zack, no one is supposed to say. They want it to remain a secret until the exhibition. If anyone says they were contacted, then we would obviously know they had been selected. The winners will know, and the rest of us will find out on April 21st.

If you haven't been contacted by next week, then it's a pretty safe bet that you weren't selected. I'm guessing there will be an announcement once they have contacted all of the winners, though they haven't said that.

  138. notherbob, I just found out that I have the same problem! And I can't reset my email address without my password, and I have noooo idea what that is because I just sign in through facebook! I tried to reset my password, but it emailed the new one to my inactive email address (you see the problem here). I emailed them about it, obviously, but who knows when they'll get back to me...

I had no idea that they linked my inactive email address from facebook. I haven't cared to update that because I don't want emails from facebook anyway.

I tried not to be too hopeful, but I can't help but feel panicky that they don't even have a working email address if they should need to notify me about anything fantastic.

  139. Send an email to support@talenthouse.com.. They were very prompt and resolved my issue..

    ReplyDelete
  140. @Craig- Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to ruin the fun or anything... I was looking for more of a "my friend of a friend of a friend was contacted" kind of a thing. Or maybe someone e-mailed you anonymously just to let you know.

    ReplyDelete
  141. notherbob: Yeah, I emailed them right away, but I still haven't heard back. I'm sure they are swamped! I'm glad they were able to help you.

  142. Winners aren't supposed to tell, but I guess there's no harm in saying I didn't make the cut! I'm not upset, there were a LOT of amazing designs that were far better than mine that should have rightly got the nod. Good work everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Well congrats to all the winners whoever you are!! :D I'm just wondering, are all the people who entered supposed to get an email saying we can stop worrying about it? Because I saw that somewhere and I wasn't sure haha :)

  144. looks like my posts have been removed & i'm now banned from thecure.com's msg board...

shouldn't have expressed concerns publicly, i guess...
