this is absolutely awesome... an album that was written 21 years ago making a comeback in the charts x] really says a LOT about music today...
ReplyDeleteIn relation to notdeadyet...
ReplyDelete...The Rolling Stones re-issue of Exile on Main Street is number 5. It was number 1 last week.
Its good but I was pretty disappointed.. Ah well, I had hoped top 40 after the pre sales and whatnot.
ReplyDeletei thought i would be in a better position... I hope it climbs to the top 40
ReplyDeleteyeah as i commented on another post somewhere, the midweek update on wednesday had it at 31
ReplyDeleteahh you're right Andrewv127... didnt see that before!
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
ReplyDelete31 in the mid week chart? wtf happened then :(
ReplyDeletetalking of comebacks - disintegration pipped to the no 67 spot by billy ocean's comeback!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWonder about Germany, always a big fan?
ReplyDeleteAaron: I've been keeping an eye on the German chart all week, and there has been no sign of it in the Top 100.
ReplyDeleteThat and the French debut at #90 have been very disappointing. Thought those would have been 2 of the strongest markets for it.
Okay, got it now. Enters at #61 in Germany.
ReplyDeleteFor any remaster to make the album charts is a rare thing.
ReplyDeleteWell done to The Cure!
I thing it's good for an album that was released 21 years ago.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time that I have checked Amazon's rankings, but this is where it is at right now:
ReplyDeleteAmazon Bestsellers Rank: #24 in Music (See Top 100 in Music)
#10 in Music > Rock
#23 in Music > Pop
craig in Italy debuts at 47 in the official italian charts.
ReplyDeleteciao
It's a shame that the vinyl was delayed, it would have made for a larger component of physical sales and potentially bumped their standing higher in the US.
ReplyDeleteWhen will US chart be out?
ReplyDeleteanddddd what about NZ/Aus!?
Aaron: The HITS Top 50 US Albums chart came out today. It didn't make it.
ReplyDeleteBillboard's Top 200 should be out tomorrow, and should be in the top 100, I would think.
Not sure about New Zealand, and I don't think the album has been released in Australia yet. Should be out this week.
yep - still not out in Oz. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteIt's placed very well if you consider the price...I know some stores were selling in the $20-ish range in the US, but list price is still around $35, isn't it? (I paid $38.99 Canadian for mine...I might just betray my country's economy next time and pre-order from the US ;)
ReplyDeleteWorth every penny to me. Of course, I then went on ebay looking up older remasters just to check on prices, and ended up getting an autographed deluxe set of "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" for less than what I paid for Disintegration, locally :P Thank you, Internet. I should have stuck with you all along.
6,668 sales@ $22.00 approx = $146,696.00 sale value in the states in week one. Not a whole pile of revenue in that me thinks? By the time costs (cd and vinyl production, marketing etc etc.) are taken out one would wonder about the commercial viability. I know this is very basic maths and probably not an issue for RS but it would make you wonder about the whole remastering project on its financial merits?
ReplyDeleteAnyone know what the world wide sales are?
ReplyDeleteHonestly I have no clue whatsoever as to how successful (purely in terms of revenue) this remaster has been.
viva de Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL, its already sold more copies than 13 dream!
ReplyDeleteLC: I'm sure you're just joking, but in case anyone thinks that's true, 4:13 Dream sold 24,000 in its first week in the US.
ReplyDeleteAnd some 1st week numbers for previous Deluxe Editions in the US - Pornography 3,752, Seventeen Seconds 2,827 and Kiss Me 2,128.
ReplyDeleteCraig
ReplyDeleteYes I was just kidding. Do yo know how many units it sold total? (4 13 dream)
Those figures are pretty miserable. Its definitely a sign of the times and an indicator of the dwindling relevance of physical CD sales when sales of 6668 can enter at 89 on the US billboard. Live touring is where the revenue is at. I M H O.
ReplyDeleteI think it might also just be a sign of the economic times. A lot of people don't have much disposable income, and they are not as likely to hit the record store. Even with all the big chains gone here in the U.S., a lot of small local record stores are still having a tough time, and most of them cannot afford to offer the deep discounts that Newbury Comics offered. I do wonder how they were able to offer it at that price.
ReplyDeleteAt least, that's my excuse. I have all the previous remasters, and I want this one, but I have not bought it yet because of the money. I think it is interesting that the Nick Cave remasters on Mute Records which are two disc sets (CD/DVD) are half the price of all the Cure remasters. The quality of the Nick Cave discs are great, and they all include 5.1 mixes of the albums, plus videos, bonus tracks and documentaries/interviews.
I rather think if The Cure weren't ensnared in the Universal web of despair, they'd be able to offer these with awesome quality, lower prices and fewer delays. Nevertheless, I'm glad this is finally out, and I am looking forward to purchasing and hearing it in all its glory again.
The real sign of the times is that this album was on piratebay for download weeks ago, same was the case for 4:13 dream, a ton of people downloaded that . It is a sad state of affairs for Bands to make money these days, if you dont tour, you dont get paid, there is a Disintegration download up now with all 5 discs, the alternates, and the Dallas show, these people download it for free, let's see those numbers.
ReplyDeleteI am curious to see 4:13 sales to date
also it's 3 in billboard catalog albums
ReplyDeleteadding to the discussion though,
ReplyDeletei'd like to point out that i am literally (literally) the only person i know who buys cds. i tell people that and they think i am crazy. i know a few people who might buy a single song on itunes once in a while, but even that is rare. the majority of people just use limewire for everything. and by majority, i mean a strong strong majority.
Ironic that it entered at #89, since it was released in 89. :)
ReplyDeleteCraig: Take the date down..
ReplyDeleteThe latest from the stores is it's been put on back order as the record company has now run out of stock.. among other stories.. I've heard so many of them now..
None of them really have the faintest idea what is going on..
Can anybody shed some light as to what the hell has happened?!??
I wonder what RSX would say about this if he got wind of it..
In answer to the 4:13 questions from a contact I had, it seems as though 4:13 has had around 364,000 or so sales worldwide. Cant remember the exact number again.
ReplyDeleteWhere's the cheapest to get it IN stores?
ReplyDeleteI went to Best Buy the other day and it was $40!!!!!!!
I think E N T R E A T nailed it in his last comment. All new releases this day and age are readily available for free via some internet source or other and usually before the official release date in the shops. The reason why any band would release new material is to generate awareness pre-touring. Thats where the major bucks are. Maybe Craig (being the absolute source of all Cure stats and figures) could dig out turnover figures comparing 4 tour turnover/profits versus 4:13 worldwide sales turnover/profit. I'd bet my house you could take 4:13,the two prior re-masters and Disintegration re-master together and they would not exceed 4tour figures for end revenue to the band.
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing that the last tour took in something like 10-million (can't remember if that was £'s or $'s).
ReplyDeleteAnd I may be pulling these numbers right out of my arse. I just remember hearing that number once...Some end of year tally of the top grossing tours of 2008 or something.

ReplyDeleteit's coming up at #4 on the US Catalog Albums now.

Yup, it's true about the internet downloads. I know people, too, who absolutely refuse to pay for music. They act as if it is their right to have the music without giving the artist something, anything, as recompense. Some of them don't want to pay for anything at all if they can get away with it. They seem to feel that the world should just work this way. I wish I could agree, but these same people still have to pay rent to a landlord for a room, and one way or the other, so do the musicians, artists and performers.
ReplyDeletewhere is bob marley coming from? disintegration was definitely right after journey last night, how did it change?
ReplyDeletealso - disintegration is now saying 92 on the billboard 200
ReplyDeleteBillboard has as the sample song for Desintegration as "A Forest"... huh? Pretty disappointed that only 5100 have been sold in the first week. Come on Cure fans!
ReplyDeleteyeah billboard's being weird. it's actually calling the charted album "disintegration: wembley 1-19-91" when you click on it. off the label "raggettstacks."
ReplyDelete?
Robert needs to do more press for Disintegration remastered. I haven't seen much from The Cure camp beyond what is on A Chain of Flowers, but I've seen Keith Richards all over the media promoting The Rolling Stone re-releases. I guess that it's a problem when you only have one member of the band that ever does interviews or media appearances..but seriously, get out there and promote the re-release...it's worth it! Do you know how many magazines would have bent over backwards to spend a minute on the phone with Robert?
ReplyDeleteI bought mine the day it came out. Here's how many albums I've downloaded in my life: 0 zero ZERO!
ReplyDeleteIt's not the same without the sleeve and liner notes, strangely. As the music is most important, but it has no colour for me without the sleeve.
I know the artists don't get much out of record sales but it's better than nothing. Any time someone talks about downloading songs from the internet, I give them a hard time and state my case. Why people think it's ok to trade/steal music I'll never know. If sales keep dwindling we wont have cd/vinyl anymore and have to get everything from itunes...which would suck. And then people would just download for free even more...then people would stop selling music, and we'd just have concerts and street performers...
I'm preaching to the choir to preach to the congregation..BUY MUSIC!
Does anybody know what the recent Cure facebook update of "1,000,000" refers to? Maybe a new total number of Disintigration copies sold over the years? I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteOr is it 1,000,000 facebook fans?
ReplyDeleteJust the number of Facebook fans.
