Robert supports saving BBC 6

As posted on the Joy of 6 website, and mentioned at BBC News (Thanks Danny):

"RADIO 6 IS AN IMPORTANT, VIBRANT AND INNOVATIVE RADIO STATION LISTENED TO AND LOVED BY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PASSIONATE MUSIC FANS. IT IS ONE OF THE FEW WAYS - IF NOT THE ONLY WAY - FOR MUSICIANS NEW AND OLD UNWILLING OR UNABLE TO CONFORM TO ANY DULL NOTIONAL MAINSTREAM TO BE HEARD BY A NATIONAL AUDIENCE. IT CAN AND DOES PLAY SONGS FROM MANY DIFFERENT GENRES AND DECADES, CHALLENGING AND ENTERTAINING THE LISTENER IN EQUAL MEASURE.

I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED THE BBC SHOULD OFFER REAL CHOICE IN HONORING ITS SEMINAL MISSION STATEMENT - TO EDUCATE, INFORM AND ENTERTAIN - UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS MAY AT TIMES REQUIRE IT TO ACT MORE AS A PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTER THAN A COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE. IF THE CORPORATION GETS RID OF RADIO 6 IT WILL BE GUILTY OF REDUCING REAL CHOICE, AND OF ACTIVELY ENCOURAGING THE LITERALLY STUPEFYING GROWTH OF A DISMAL HOMOGENEOUS X-DRIVEL CULTURE.

KEEP RADIO 6 ALIVE! - Robert Smith (The Cure)

  1. Robert is otherwise very intelligent and a great writer, but oh-my-god i would take him 1000 times more seriously if he stopped the ridiculous all-caps habit. It corrupts and distracts from every single thing he writes.

  5. Oki, what exactly is x-drivel?

  6. Robert pretty much owns the CAPS LOCK post now through stubbornly refusing to give in to the howls of those who doth protest too much.

  7. x drivel...read Simon Cowell Z factor/Britain 's got no talent etc and all the blandness(euphemism) that we are being fed here in the UK..Can't comment on what's abroad, but i am sure it's the same thing everywhere..

  8. Give him a break! He's been playing rock music since the mid 70s, if he's shouting he probably doesn't realize it.

  13. @Jason, when Bowie speaks mortals tremble... governments fall, and it rains candy. At least in the world I want to live in...

  14. Then we share the same hope for an ideal world J!

  15. Well said, Robert. Publicly funded radio is sucking nowadays in Canada, too. Bloody CBC Radio 2 just airs bad Canadian pop. No more classical music most of the day.

  16. Thanks Bobert for summing that up so much more eloquently than I could...

6 Music is the only station I can bare to listen to...some of the things played on there have had a huge impact on me.

Getting rid of it will be a huge mistake...you'll lose the one outlet for genuinely good new music left.

You've killed Top of The Pops..don't ruin this for us too...plleeeeaassee.
