Playboy has started a new series called Uncovered, and the first band featured is Dinosaur Jr. doing an acoustic cover of Just Like Heaven. There's also an interview where they mention how much they've always loved The Cure.
Back in probably early 1989 I heard Dinosaur Jr.'s version of JLH played on KROQ. But the DJ didn't say who it was by or anything about it. It caught my attention so much that I figured they would play it a lot. I tried to figure out where the track came from but had no good answers. This was back when The Cure didn't like anyone covering their songs and it certainly didn't sound like Robert singing so I had it in my head that it might've been The Cure but possibly someone like Porl singing.
Oddly enough they never played it again so a couple months later I called KROQ up late one night and asked them to play that new version of Just Like Heaven. The person who answered was nice but had no idea what I was talking about. I tried to explain it the best I could and swore up and down that I really had heard them play this odd version of JLH. They said they would try to track it down and apparently they did and started playing it, and started playing it all the time. The first time they played it they said it was by my request and mentioned that it was a cover by a new band called Dinosaur Jr. Then Dinosaur Jr. got really big. I like to think I had a hand in that.
How come no-one owned up to being the person that found the story in Playboy? Do they NOT what to be known as the one person that DOES actually buy Playboy to read the articles?
Elise: Well, it was Heron who sent in the the Curespotting below, which led me to investigate the story, so I guess I'm to blame. : ) But I certainly didn't buy a copy! I just looked online. : )

ReplyDeleteMaybe Hugh Hefner found the story and e-mailed it into Craig.

ReplyDeleteHeehee. I actually have a subscription, and have submitted a number of Curespottings from Playboy over the years.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, the content has become less interesting lately, and I intend on letting the subscription run out.
