Cure photos in new Schecter catalog

"I wanted to send along these photos I scanned out of the latest 2009 Schecter Guitar promotional book. It is very nicely designed, I thought everyone might enjoy looking at them and seeing the specs on the guitars." (Thanks Michelle)

  1. O.o Those are nice. I particularly like the layout of the pages and the design that was used :)

  4. why is Simon holding a 6-str guitar instead of a 4-str bass guitar ??

    ReplyDelete
  5. francois, Simon is holding a Hellcat VI. It's Schecter's version of the Frnder Bass VI. I wish Robert was holding (and playing) a VI. :(

  6. Simon hasn't used a 6 string bass on the recent tour though, has he?

  7. Simon hasn't used a VI on this tour. The last time I've seen any footage of him playing a VI was on Trilogy and it was only on "There is no if.." because that song doesn't have a bass line and all he's doing is playing a melody after each set of lyrics. As far as I know there aren't too many songs that he would need a VI for. That's why I think it's weird they have him endorsing the hellcat VI.

  8. yeah, i had the same doubt about simon's six string bass, i hope he uses it sometime soon. i didnt even know simon had a shecter at all. and why didnt they show the other ultracure? the one that robert owns, the gold one. and the other shecter porl has?

    ReplyDelete
  9. That other ultracure is a custom ultracure VI. I heard somewhere that they might make it for the public but I kinda doubt it. Not too many people are playing VI's now a days so there's not much demand for it. I thought there used to be an Ultrabass model but I can't find it so I could be wrong. As far as Simon playing a VI goes, they don't have the same sound and tone as a standard scale 4 string bass so I hope he doesn't play a VI any time soon. Except of course if they play "There is no if..."

  10. so the other shecter robert guitarre is a six string bass?? :O

  11. ok i did a little digging and i ended up even more confused, i was hoping some here could explain:

    a) i read somewhere that Robert helped with the design of the Hellcat VI, is this true?

    b) We know about the Shecter Ultracure (black one), then there is a golden one (what's the difference with the black one?) and i found this picture of robert playing a black Shecter but with a much larger scale lenght. and has 696 printed or posted,

it's obviously not the Ultracure that he always plays, and it seems like its a six string bass, is it? i hope someone can answer this question. thanks in advance

  12. During the last tour i noticed he has 3 ultracure guitars on stage. The 2 black ones are regular guitars. One in standard tuning and the other in an alternate tuning. The non black ultracure(can't tell if it's gold or green) he plays for UTS is a VI. I know because I've met his guitar tech and specifically asked him. As far as him designing the hellcat I don't know. I do know he helped design the ultracure though.

  13. Too bad they all sound like shit.
    Nice pictures though.
Pictures don't do a damn thing for tone.
I miss the good ol days.

  15. I also remember reading something about Robert and Perry having input on the Hellcat VI, yet I don't recall Robert ever using it live. Maybe they didn't like the way they came out afterall so they decided to make the UltraCure VI??

  16. I own both the ultracure and the hellcat VI and i have owned a fender bass VI (re-issue) the hellcat VI is worlds better than the fender... sad as the realization is... i love vintage guitars. the schecter president (joel?) was on here when another guitar topic came up, and he said that simon prefers his thunderbirds and that they were trying to work with him to make a signature bass for him too but that it hadn't happened... simon does play the schecter J-Bass knockoff in the 4:13 black and white live videos... perry used to feature in the hellcat VI ads...

  17. They've all said the Fender VI had real "limitations," however, when I listen to the bass VI playing from older tours, I think the Fender VI sounds much better than the schecter VI's do imho. There is a much clearer bell/piano-like quality that i enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. that may have been a quality from the original Fender VI as well... since my only experience was with the re-issue it's hard to tell... i would also like to think that amplification, recording methods, effects, and even the bands playing style have changed a great deal since the 80's... the versatility of the sounds i get from the Hellcat VI are much cleaner and have a more leveled gain... anyway... not arguing just relaying my personal experiences.

  19. OK... This might not be a popular post, but I think this guy has a good point. As a long time cure fan AND guitar player, I tend to agree with him. Please read and give me your thoughts:

  20. i could agree with alot of what he says... i certainly miss the vintage instruments of the band... but personally i like the slightly different arrangements to the songs... and how they make all of their songs sound a bit different for nearly every tour... having said that... i do hope that they again give us new arrangements etc... for their next outing... i don't blame it so much on schecter though... owning the instruments and having my own firsthand experience with them tells me that they are very versatile and that the tone that robert is getting is intentional. so many things affect tone, making it very hard to blame solely the instrument... plus the heavy metalish guitars out front thing has to do with more or less proving that they don't need a keyboard player... a statement Robert wanted to make... whether we agree or not.

  21. Ok, I own a reissue of the fender VI, plus the Ultra Cure. I never played the hellcat, but it looks weird to me. My Ultra has brilliant tone and it rings on forever. I added an extra pickup to it for my GR-20 synth, this was good for melodic solos, but I think the Ultra is better as a rhythm guitar.

I plan to get a Fender Standard Roland-Ready Stratocaster for my GR-20 and install a 24-fret neck like the Ultra. The new Strat will be for solos, and the Ultra will be for rhythm.

As far as a my Fender VI, it is my favorite, another solo guitar. I use all the effects Robert used for the WMS era, but the giga versions of Boss pedals, plus I have a AX1000G from KORG for that extra push. Sounds like Robert using Sonic Youths set up.

My answer to our dilemma, The Cure should use Wish era guitars for the older song, and the Schecter ones for the newer songs. I do not think the band is bound by contract to Schecter, and if they play all these wonderful guitars on their next tour, everyone will be happy.

  22. Carnage Visors: Mmmmm! Robert using Sonic Youth's set up. Nice.

Your solution would be great. I recon that the use of Schecters for all songs is a way of "unifying" the sound through 30 odd years of very different songs. It does get a bit "sludgy", but I really like that (and I like Prong!). I really enjoy the wall of sound that songs like PFR, for instance, have become. However it's a different creature from how it sounded around the time of "Trilogy" and I can see how that could be an issue for some.

Simon's rejection of Schecter's attempts to replace his beloved Thunderbird obviously resulted in not wanting to be seen with any of their 4 strings!;) It's more likely an attempt by Schecter to sell some baritone guitars to Cure fans (after all, the Hellcat was endorsed/ used by Perry in the past).

  23. Interesting read, even though i know absolutly nothing about guitars and basses....Simon's page is the only one without a proper picture of himself, and with no signature...

  24. i'm not even going to click that link... but way to add to the discussion Smadraji *rolls eyes*

  25. VI's may have had some limitations, sure, age falling apart from traveling the world since the 80s, whatever, but their sound was pure magic.

These current ones, ultra VI, whatever it is he has been playing, sounds blah.

Ya can't compare a reissue VI to a schecter.
The real VI, there is NO COMPARISON.

The reissues don't sound the same, they look pretty but not the same tone.
But with RS's money, it's not like he's in a garage band supporting his hobby by delivering pizza, the man can buy a dozen originals in #1 condition and make the audience happy.

The same goes for the vintage gibson's and gretsch's vs the metal oriented "ultra", or the acoustic ovations vs the RS-9,000,000,000 acoustic now in use.

Can you honsetly say to yourself IBD sounds as good as it did on the swing tour?
Faith sounds anywhere near as rich as it did?
    The list goes on...

At least Simon is still rocking a tbird..

One thing you can not argue, even you Mr schecter if you decide to pop in on this thread, is things don't sound anywhere near as good as they did in the prior tours.

    THEY ARE HEAVY METAL GUITARS!!!!!!
But then again, with uncle fester back in the band, seems as if theyre ready to be a metal band these days..

And for the record, I'm not just trying to stir shit up, I still follow the band all over the world and see every show when they are not tour years, and go to at least half the dates on tour years.

I guess I should have quit when Roger did.
Theyre still good live, but it's not what it used to be...

  26. Good job "Zap"... LeSigh

I have to say, I miss the old tones, cure music used to be much prettier as a whole. We've fallen into this twiny, high pitch blah...

    Ugh.

  27. Actually, good points Zap... I mis-read ya ;P

  28. The new VI's sound buzzy. Little if any of the big ring and full tone. Just go to youtube and listen to an old PIY versus a new back-to-back and it's just undeniable.

  30. I completely agree with you, Paul. The shitty sound isn't only due to the lack of vintage guitars, though. Robert used to run his VI through a Fender 4x12 and (I believe) a dedicated Boss CH-1. A winning combination Robert described as sounding like a cello. I miss that sound :( Just listen, if you can stand it, to Disintegration from the recent gig in London. His Schecter seems to be sounding worse these days! Seriously, I don't get why he keeps playing that thing when it sounds so bad. Okay, on some of the new stuff it's not bad, and Porl's sound is tolerable. For the classics, yeah, they need the vintage guitars. Makes no difference to me which one as long as RS doesn't sound so damn harsh and twangy.

  31. Have any of you actually tried ordering some of these guitars? The Porl Thompson signature model has been on back order since December. WTF! When I called Schecter a representative said they still haven't received a shipment from Korea.
