How Pornography brought The Cure to the brink
Ahead of their headline set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, Ed Power looks back on how drugs, drink and the recording process turned goth-rock troupe into ‘a powder keg ready to explode'.
Summer 1982 was drawing to a fitful close when Robert Smith slid his guitar under the bed, scrubbed away the last of the mascara and packed his sleeping bag. The Cure frontman was about to step outside the door of his parent’s house in Crawley, West Sussex, and away from the goth-rock troupe he had led to unlikely success across the previous six years. He was heading into the blue yonder in a desperate attempt to silence the tumult in this head, the chaos that had come crashing down on his music career.
He didn’t tell anyone but he suspected that, after four albums and a lifetime of upheaval stuffed into half a decade, it might be the end for the band. As far as Smith was concerned, The Cure were over. And so here he was, a literally unhappy camper about to hit the road. “Everything seemed to be going wrong,” Smith would recall. “So I decided to go off for a few months. I took a tent and went around England.”

BBC Radio 2 interview with Robert
THE CURE - Robert Smith interview on BBC Radio 2 - 2019-06-30https://t.co/IdERaXRBp4— TCDB.info (@TCDB_info) June 30, 2019
Robert says the plan is still to have the new album out in the Autumn. Early - mid November. But still has to put vocals on 4-5 songs, do the mixing, etc.
Robert says he DID see the Foo Fighters' set at Hurricane Festival. Was blown away by them. One of the best festival bands he's seen.
More from from the Irish Examiner:
The Cure’s Robert Smith has said the band’s upcoming new album is “not going to be that enjoyable”.
The English rock group are working on their first studio album since 2008’s 4:13 Dream, and have previously teased that it is very dark.
The band are set to play Glastonbury on Sunday night, but Smith told Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2 they are more likely to play familiar music.
He said: “So rehearsing for the summer festivals we did spend a day running through new stuff and at the end of it we just looked at each other and said none of this going to work in a festival setting.
“I’ve learnt something over the last few years – if you want to have a good festival show you have to engage the crowd, they have to be on your side. You want them to love you.
“It’s not necessarily the case when you’re playing your own shows, you kind of challenge people a bit more but Glastonbury they have no idea who’s on until it’s announced so people buy the tickets as an event.
“We’re just a small part of the event and so the show, whatever form it takes, it will be songs that people know.”
Smith went on: “We played Hyde Park last year and it showed me that if you play the right songs in the right way you will get a crowd, however big it is, to go along with you and that’s really what I want when we step out on stage.
“I want the crowd to be part of the show, not for us to stand there and say ‘Here’s 10 minutes of doom and gloom, you’d better enjoy it.’
“The new album, in a funny way, it’s not going to be that enjoyable.
“I know I shouldn’t say that… it’s something, it’s a piece, we’ve tried and it just won’t work.
“We’ve tried to squeeze a couple of songs in. I can imagine the crowd just staring back at us when we’re playing it.”
Smith said he was not apprehensive ahead of the band’s set.
“I’ve never been nervous, just a funny thing with me,” he said.
“I don’t know what’s the matter with me. That wire’s missing!
“But the rest of the band do get varying degrees almost paralysed with nerves as the show approaches. I’m always running around saying ‘Come on, enjoy it, you won’t get it back!’.”

BBC Radio 6 interview with Robert
Highlights from The Irish Examiner:THE CURE - Robert Smith interview on BBC Radio 6 Music - 2019-06-27https://t.co/81ezNKMB0z— TCDB.info (@TCDB_info) June 27, 2019
The Cure’s Robert Smith has said it would be “counter productive” to play the band’s “slow and gloomy” new music during their headline set at Glastonbury.
The English rock band will headline the Pyramid stage on Sunday night but will stick to older material, the frontman has promised.
He told Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music: “We ran through some of the new songs but it’s really, really slow and gloomy, the new album, and we just did it in rehearsal on the first day and everyone was looking at each other and I knew what they were thinking but no-one wanted to say it.
“There is no way, it just wouldn’t fit.
“Later in the year we are going to be playing our own shows and we will be playing new album songs in that show.
“I honestly think it would be a very counter productive move to walk out on stage and play 10 minutes of slow dirge in front of a summer festival crowd.
“I don’t think anyone would appreciate it.”
The group first played at Glastonbury in 1986 and this will be their fourth headlining slot.
Smith said: “The biggest change in me over the last 20 years of performing is that 20 years ago I really didn’t care what the audience did or didn’t get into, it was entirely selfish.
“The performance was all about what I wanted to do and how the band was, whereas now I’m much more aware we are playing for people and I understand now that if they are into it, it makes the show even better.
“You get more into it, they get more into it. It’s a great feedback loop.
“The show is now a much more powerful show than certainly the last time we played Glastonbury, it’s a much better band.”

From the Who Gives a Fuck? files
sam:
Finally, any small regrets?
M:
Oh, I never make my regrets small … if I can help it. Oh. Umm. Robert Smith. I said some terrible things about him 35 years ago … but I didn’t mean them … I was just being very Grange Hill. It’s great when you can blame everything on Tourette’s syndrome. [laughs]
sam:
but you’ve never met him?
M:
Oddly, I was in a pub near Buckingham Palace perhaps ten years ago … and there he was … staring over confrontationally. I take no moral responsibility for whatever I said in 1983 … after all … who does?
Awaydays: How we made the best soundtrack in football film history – with no money
"When it got to the scary business end of our delivery schedule, we had a finished cut of the film that featured Joy Division, The Cure and Magazine in key scenes. Having tried numerous tracks and different ‘takes’ and assemblies of these big, evocative moments – The Pack coming around the corner for Carty’s first big away day; the bizarre love triangle between Molly, Elvis and Carty; and Elvis getting jealous in Eric’s – we couldn’t imagine life without the tracks we’d settled upon: The Light Pours Out Of Me by Magazine, Joy Division’s Insight and the heartbroken, stripped-down very early four-track demo of The Cure’s 10.15, Saturday Night.
With The Cure, it was pretty simple. Their music publisher told us we would have to secure written permission from Robert Smith. The only problem was that the band was on a world tour and there was no saying when he might receive the letter, if at all. They suggested writing one letter c/o The Cure’s manager, who would be likely to fly out and join the tour at some point – but to send another (not a copy – the publisher emphasised that Robert Smith was a fan of a personal letter) to him (the publisher), who would forward it to Bobby’s home address. So I did – I wrote him a letter about how I’d seen him play at Eric’s for £1 on a Thursday night in 1979 and walked home, getting a lift from the milkman for the final mile. It was completely true – but it didn’t work. I didn’t hear back.
Until, long after we’d given up hope, a hand-written letter arrived from the man himself. He said he hoped we didn’t think he was being rude in not replying sooner. He’d just got back off a gruelling six-month tour (after which he’d taken a month’s holiday). He said he’d be more than happy to give his permission for us to use the track in a sensitive, non-violent context – so long as we donated £500 to Greenpeace. And he remembered the Eric’s gig with great affection. We were on."
