  4. Being a fan was alot more fun 20 years ago, I think. The Internet killed the mystery. I doubt that we'll see this kind of fandom again because the information is so readilly accessible today. Maybe that's why RS keeps a low profile these days...

  5. Marc, I respectfully disagree. Twenty years ago it was hard to find and keep in touch with other fans, it was difficult to get information about shows, and without the internet it was tough to even buy tickets in a different state or country.

Today, I have Cure friends all over the world, and I can learn of a show in London for instance, BEFORE it happens, buy my ticket online and travel there with a bunch of other people from different countries and go to the show with them.

Maybe I was just not in the right fan "cliques" back in the day, but I'm having SO MUCH more fun being a fan these days. And then we should talk about Ebay =>

  8. I heartily agree that "name's" response hit the mark. I couldn't even make it to the end of that self-important, narcissistic, inane, and frankly ridiculous drivel. Poor Robert. Well, no doubt he's received worse, hard as that may be to imagine. ;-)

  9. Rev., I agree that the community side of things is way better nowadays and that's due to the 'net.

What's gone is the mystery I felt back then because information was so hard to come by!

Could also be that I'm at the wrong end of my thirties now ;)

  10. Who is Amanda Palmer and why can't she tell the difference between Cartman and Kyle?

  12. GO! and Mark, Amanda Palmer is the lead singer and keyboardist for the punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls, who are probably best known for their songs 'Girl Anachronism' and 'Coin-Operated Boy', both from their self-titled debut. She's also a very awesome person, who almost always makes time to greet fans and pose for photos after shows, as does her bandmate, drummer/guitarist/occasional backing vocalist Brian Viglione.

Here's a photo of me with Amanda after a show in Toronto back in January 2008. I was serving as a member of The Brigade, who are a group of fans who do everything from various forms of performance art, to decorating a venue, to handing out candy, the last of which I did (a variety of Hershey's Kisses). Amanda was dealing with a cold/the flu (can't remember which) at the time, but was still nice enough to do this for the fans. Anyway, without further ado, the URL of the photo...

  16. If I knew her around here in the 80s my friends and I would have called her a poser and sent her packing. She's more than "a little lost" lately--she sold out immediately when the chance arose; I watched it locally. If we didn't destroy all art in the 90s she wouldn't have had a chance in the industry now, a "goth Beck" musically and based on sex visually, which will always sell but never gains cred (unless you use it as a weapon like Madonna). But is that what The Cure was EVER about? Don't think so myself. Anyone really influenced by this band would NEVER write "coin operated boy" and expect another Cure fan to take it seriously or as anything other than a cheap gimmick. Her whole diatribe reads like someone obsessed with sexual ideas about Robert rather than being influenced by his words, exactly what I expect from her. The mystery about The Cure is NOT gone if you yourself keep to your integrity and your sense of wonder. And hey, you get to notice when junk is junk too--and avoid it!

  17. Oh good God, it's a wonder she didn't write about how she kept getting disturbed by having to read fan mail while typing the letter.

Only good thing about this was when I searched under her name she has some nudie pics online ... now to keep searching for those nudes of Robert.

    Somewhere ...

  18. Aww, relax, guys...just because someone you don't like or respect likes your favourite band, it doesn't make you any less cool or unique of a person ;) Who cares if they're 'enjoying it right' or not.

Although I do really like what Ronan said about the fan mail!

  20. what a crap letter, i read it thinking what's this all about and i can't even believe i made it to the end i've never heard of her but she sounds like a wanker, a spoilt pretentious little princess and; the 'omg i can't believe i ever did goth how wacky I once was even though i put my makeup on like a mental fairy princess in wonderland' - get fucked i am not a supporter of violence but i am not surprised by that diatribe that she got her hair ripped out of head by some german goth chic, i can imagine after hanging about in goth clubs she would have been annoying as fuck and though no one deserves their head kicked in after a while you piss enough people off someone will crack.

i am sure from her letter she would have been one of those 'I’m so cool and gothic why won’t they love me especially the guy I want to give that amazing blow job too even though I was shit once before, because I am a stalker I mean girlfriend material and I am like the coolest goth you will ever meet and I am like um duh going to marry robert smith we just haven’t met yet but when we do you can bet he’s going to like um marry me and we will adopt 50 million kids just like bradgelina even though there’re like not even invented yet, but yeah take that head german gothic bitch I am marrying robert smith’

and that's another thing who gives a shit she had a goodtime at a cure concert not on drugs please give me a break i didn't realise you needed drugs to enjoy a band that supposedly changed your life in such a big way. i have realised that as much as i love the cure blah blah blah i have little in common with most cure fans and even though the one thing we agree on is the cure we don't even agree on that, sad but true. Though having said that I have made some ace cure friends because of the cure so I am not being totally cynical but it’s ‘fans’ like her that make me shudder that we anything even in common (though I can’t help myself but think she’s a ‘Friday im in love fan’ it‘s written all over her squiggly eyebrows)

btw telling the world you sent cure lyrics to someone you failed at giving a good blow job too is bordering on psychotic. I would love to know if robert has bothered to reply or is currently seeking a restraining order in several countries?

On another note i hope she never sells another record again as she finds 'her work' so obviously boring, too time consuming and; tedious, and no i am not sorry for saying that her letter has pissed me off royally mostly because she obviously has no real passion for music her honesty was patronising to anyone that has tried to do support themselves at doing something they love how many people get a shot at making music for a living and then tell their fans how it’s such a struggle, no one expects an artist to feel creative all the time but her letter just made me think you stupid bitch I probably haven’t heard of you because your masquerading as an alternative performer but on every commercial stage, prostituting her wares -money for honey - i feel sorry for anyone that likes or purchased her music. I thought her feigning of ecstasy by the carefully choreographed pictures and her dull uninspired homage to robert was really just a plug for her album and a ' im throwing it out there robert id love to work with you, just give me a call I’ll even give you a blow job and send you one of your songs when you don’t call'

Amanda fucking palmer you are truly a serious narcissistic dumb bitch!
