An Open Word to Lady Sovereign?

From Metro: The Cure’s Robert Smith has said he doesn’t like your song “So Human,” which has a sample of the band’s “Close to Me.”

If that was me, and someone sampled one of my songs and I wasn’t too keen on it, I wouldn’t let it happen. ... He approved it and he’s just a hypocrite if he says that he doesn’t like it. Maybe he’s broke. (Thanks April)

  1. Lady Sovereign? I didn't know who she was 30 seconds ago, and NO ONE will know who she is a year from now. Ho-hum.

  2. I don't know. I would like to know what Jimi thought of Robert's version of "Foxy Lady" but he's dead as he was at the time The Cure recorded the cover. People like sampling each other's stuff. Wasn't there a post recently of Robert doing Joy Division? C'mon.

  7. To answer my own question, apparently two 'samples' of Close to Me were released over a short span of time. One being Sovereign, the second being Thomas Jules. Robert said he preferred the Jules version.
Not hard to see why. If you missed his version:

I actually really like that one.

  10. Yo COF! Let's kick it!

The article has an interesting beginning.

"Britain’s Lady Sovereign has cornered the market on being the toughest, tiniest white female rapper."

    Wow.

That must be quite an accomplishment.

The mountains of tough and tiny women competing with eachother to corner the market on being the toughest, tiniest white female rapper.

So many, many, many tough and tiny white female rappers, but, Lady Sovereign has that market cornered.

Everybody remember the Vegas show at the Pearl? So many white female rappers. I had to push through all those tough and tiny female rappers just to get to the front. They're everywhere. And she has that market cornered.

Out of all the many tiny and tough female rappers out there... she's the man!

She's kind of like one those little novelty acts that's not going to last long. Will it ever stop? Yo! I don't know! Not that I really like him or give him any credit, but, I am aware of Eminem. I would compare her less to Eminem and more to Vanilla Ice.

Now check out the hook while my DJ revolves it.

    wiikiii wiiikiiii

  11. I read my post and want to make sure it's said that I do think there are MANY tiny AND tough women out there, but, my point was that there doesn't seem to be this big competition among them to where they're all fighting to corner some market on being a tough and tiny female rapper. It's like, if there are one hundred of them and you come out on top, well done. Good job. But, maybe when there are only a few really doing it, then, maybe you're only one of the first really doing it for a living and being one of those first doesn't necessarily mean you're something amazing.

  13. Perfect Murder. Just regular waky tabaky, but, rolled in the cardboard packaging from the reissues. Strange affects.

  14. That's the point, isn't it...just because Robert gave his permission doesn't mean he has to like the end result.

Having said that, Lady Sovereign, uggh! She is directly targeted at the 15 year old "chav" (sports clothes, cheap bling, disaffected, think they're all "gangstas") market here in Blighty.

  15. Robert goes out of his way to support up and comers (Curiosa is a good example of that, as is the remix ep) and he's not being hypocritical if he says he doesn't like something. He's just saying, well, he doesn't like it.

That little twerp should be grateful that older established artists such and Robert, and yes Jay-Z allow her to bombard the public with her garbage.

I'm not really sure where these teeny-bopper wannabees get off. It kind of reminds me of when Avril Lavine mispronounced David Bowie's name and then complained, what's the big deal?" Well, the big deal is that these people paved the way for you to put out the garbage that you do.

Oh geeze, I had better shut up, it's too early to rant.

  16. ah she's just taking the piss. i'm with mr. scribbles; they're both great, that's all

  17. HAHAHAHAHA mr. scribbles......LMAO

  18. Quote My Ghost - lol! You should know there’s no 'time limit' to ranting around here! :)

How was Robert’s comment hypocritical? He let her sample his music, and then she took that sample and fashioned it into a shining piece of worthless crap. Just because he let her sample his work, that doesn’t automatically mean he’s obliged or guaranteed to like the finished product. He didn’t give her permission to use what he gave her and turn it into the unlistenable aural feces that resulted.

If Robert doesn’t like it, then that means it’s really God-awful, deal with it. Sheesh, I guess “gangstas” don’t take criticism very well.

She should work on getting her facts straight, and hopefully she’ll buy herself a fucking dictionary while she’s at it. Do people like her really think that the expendable, extraneous nonsense they churn out is beyond any dislike or criticism? Bunch of ingrates… Xp

  20. All I have to do is kill her...

that's the exact same person I used as a reference for ignorance. Avril...And somehow I think you're right. If Robert ever decides to do another Curiosa type event it wouldn't surprise me if he threw her or someone equally as bad a bone and put them on second stage.

In an ironic sort of way we are giving this POS too much recognition by even bothering to bad mouth her.

  24. I watched both videos and I have to say that I like the Thomas Jules version a LOT better. That one I'd actually bother to download and put on my player. I like how melodic it is and how he's actually bothering to sing the lyrics.

  25. Her response reflects her cover.

  26. He allowed someone to sample his work for an artistic endeavour and then he didn't like what the person came up with. How does that make him a hypocrite?
