Articles: La Repubblica (English) (Robert interview) / Il Messaggero (English)

00:24 - Bruno: Robert sang LGTB in a different way. He sang: "every time i sing this, i sing in the same way.." bla bla bla which i can't remember and then "i dont care if u dont.."

00:22 - @MarbleAndStone: My dream came true (Just One Kiss). (Photo)

00:03 - David: Robert invites us to go to England in October for 'TSDWAY', smooth and sad before going back to Spain for good. 'The Kiss' is perfect, like 'IOTWCS' with little changes in the melody. 'Fight' will wake us up. Porl's tribute, and he deserves it, don't u think.

00:02 - @Object29: Fight... Fuck yeah'! sorry for swearing in the Holy City but. ... Fuck Yeah

23:36 - David:  'Want' is FANTASTIC, Reeves' moment that makes the crowd open their mouths. But 'OHY' and 'End' are the Prince of darkness.

23:34 - Bruno: Absolutely amazing! The best gig that I've ever attended so far!! The audience is really into it and the band is extremely exited!! Simply awesome!!

23:29 - @Alex_Meehan: rammed tighter than a Dublin bar at last orders. Took 30 minutes to move 50 feet. Crowd didn't thin out until the very back.

23:24 - @Alex_Meehan: check out the audience. This is about 50% of the people. Huge crowd, most singing along to all the words. (Photo)
23:24 - @Fons36: complete different lyrics

23:12 - David: 'Want' is a pure beauty but 'The Hungry Ghost' tonight is one of the best Cure song ever. And with Roger's keyboards, it's like a dream. Everything is perfect. The set list, the sound, the atmosphere. Seeing The Cure in Rone and die !

23:10 - @Alex_Meehan: Had to leave the gig early, but wow, sounding very very strong. Much better than the last ten years. Probably longer.

23:06 - @Object29: Want is kicking some serious fucking arse

23:05 - @MarbleAndStone: That was magic again (Trust). Robert really puts a lot of emotion into that song. Beautifully sung. And Roger rules

23:02 - David: 'Trust' maKes me cry like a child. I'm 17 again. And you, fans of the world, are 17 too. The best concert in my entire life.

23:00 - @Fons36: Lighters go up for Trust (Photo)

22:48 - David: In Paris, we sing the keyboard tune on 'PFT'. In Roma we sing the keyboard and voice tunes on 'Inbetween Days' ! I'm Italian, a guy from the south of France is becoming Italian !

22:35 - David: 'Lullaby' darker than ever. 'The Caterpillar' ouu ouu hoou ouu than ever ! Goin' up and up and up in the Roman night. Heaven is an hypodrome, did u guess that ?

22:26 - @Object29: Mary would be happy.. Robert is singing well tonight...

22:18 - David: 'Bananafishbones' drives us into psychedelic madness. What happens to The Cure tonight ?! They may be the best band in the whole music history. At least, in Roma ! Love u, Italy, love u Roma !

22:13 - @MarbleAndStone: Jason sounds so fucking tight on this tour.
22:13 - @Fons36: having a great time with my roman friends here. Amazing crowd. Entusiastic. They sing along with whatever they play.

21:59 - David: 'FIIL', Roman crowd totally crazy, never seen that ! The boys fucking rock tonight. Impossible to find the right words and I promise, it's not my first Cure gig, honeys !

21:46 - @Fons36: Crowd all sing a long with lovesong.

21:45 - Bruno: Roger just unplugged all the wires of the fog machine by himself. : )
21:45 - David: 'End of the world', what can I say but that we never heard it like this. Crowd already at 150 % into it.

21:37 - David: 'Open' fantastic, a much better opener thant 'Plainsong'.

21:07 - @Fons36: correction they're actually throwing bottles of water in the audience. I might get hit while typing this:-)

21:02 - Bruno: On roger's keyboards it's written "mille grazie 25 anni!". I don't know if it's written just as a regular "thank u italy for all" or if it's a goodbye to italy... Just guessing..(Photo)

20:56 - @Fons36: they're giving water now to the people in the front.

20:42 - Maciek: Crystal Castles playing i'm not in love. Without RS

20:39 - David: Cranes were cool even if the guitar player fucked up the last song. Crystal Castle on stage, incredibly powerfull techno-rock sound, the singer drinking at a bottle of whiskey and heating the crowd. Eden Gallup is the seated public. Friends of curefans.com and closetocure.com are there with banners on the seated barriers. Jason went into the the public area for a few minutes and met Marcel. Simon showed up a few seconds down the seated area and went back stage. The crowd is amazing and we're gonna get a much more energetic show than in Milan. A kind of goth-pop-indie-rock attendance, fucking into it.

20:36 - Maciek: And this is me and my wife with Alison! Just a minute ago :) (Photo)

20:24 - Maciek: Cure Merchandise stand (Photo)

20:10 - @Fons36: glad i brought my belfort earplugs. Terrible loud . What's the fun? even if you like them....

19:55 - Bruno: During the opening concert here I'm seeing all the staff such as Jeremy and Darren we're all running around and doing microphone check. I've just spotted Roger and Simon among the audience over a balcony and the crowd really cheered them up!! Just telling you that because Crystal Castles is about to get on the stage and this things can be signs of a possible duet of Robert and Alice in Not in Love (as I said, I'm not sure but it really looks like it's gonna happen).

19:48 - @Fons36: Cranes finished. Good atmosphere here.

19:45 - @AndySabre: Bob is between us ...(Photo)

19:32 - Shellheart (in the front row): "Maybe you can post on the forum of this rock in rome thing on twitter, facebook that they threat the crowd like shit. They dont give water to the people and it is italian summer. Even the russians did. Maybe we can spread the word so they have a bad reputation."

19:23 - @Fons36: far and away, adrift

19:13 - @Fons36: good to see cranes live again. They're now into some newer songs. 2 songs that i'm not so familiar with. Now jewel..

19:06 - @Fons36: night and day. Now another track from loved. Maybe reverie?

18:53 - @Fons36: cranes just started. Cloudless. Everywhere . If i'm not mistaken. shining road.

18:45 - @AndySabre: Cranes! (Photo)

18:34 - @Marsworld: darren talking with Ali at back of stage while other cranes members are setting up instruments

18:23 - @Marsworld: Jason talking with Ben, paul and Jim from cranes at the back of the stage

15:58 - @AndySabre: Arrived! (Photo)

15:38 - Maciek: We came from Poland to see TC, so it has to be wonderful! :) There is something like 35 degrees in Rome, so the atmosphere already became hot.. ;)

Word going around all Summer was that this was THE show to see on the tour. If you could only go to one, this was it. We'll know if the hype was justified or not, in just a few hours. : )
The Cure are scheduled to play from 21:30 - 00:30 tonight. In the US, that's a start time of 3:30 pm eastern, 2:30 pm central, 1:30 pm mountain, and 12:30 pm pacific. The Cranes play at 18:45, and Crystal Castles at 20:00.

  1. Roma is hot today. The meet up was pretty cool yesterday eve with very nice people (ciao Marcel, Georgia, Antoinette, Nico, Thomas, Katrin, Alessandro, Marco, Stephano, Maurizio, Sandrine and all of those who were there). Going to the venue, almost sold out, we heard.
Craig, as always I'll think of you and send vibrations from Europe.

    1. Rihanna's got shitload of songs that's superior to "HG". Trust me, I love Cure as much as you do but HG is average at it's best. The last great song Cure did was "This Morning" and "Anniversary". "UTS" could have been a classic but the final production was awful. They should do that with Roger and Reeves instead of HG.

    2. But David isn't saying it's the best song ever. He just said that tonight, the way they played it, to him, it was. Can't really argue about that.

  37. Review from Maciek:

"That was my 28th Cure gig and it was surprisingly different. Very poppy set as you probably noticed. So kind of very "positive", the most uplifting Cure gig I ever saw. The audience sang loudly most of the singles. Especially lovesong, lullaby, close to me. Very positive atmosphere.

I have also never seen Robert dancing so much during the concert :) Which made the crowd even more enthusiastic.

The encores made up this "pop" basic set. The same deep water announced as "try to imagine it's cold october in england for 10 minutes" - amazing performance. Then this kiss me set - awesome. And on the dessert just one kiss, dressing up, close to me and others.

Great gig, however quite different from the "usual" ones. I'm tired and happy to see it :)"

  40. I can't count how many Cure concert I saw in my life, but enough to say that the Roma gig was nice/great. Double valutation: NICE, because I am more into the firts period of The Cure, so that I don't like too much "pop" Cure concerts, GREAT because the crowd made the difference singing almost all (ehm... I think "Just One Kiss" was sung by very few people even if is the song I wanted to hear since ever) and also because we could hear songs from The Top album quite unusual but 1987 tour, like "Dressing Up" and "Fight". I went to the gig avoiding reading previous setlist and it worked: more emotional to hear surprises. Totally changed lyrics for "One hundred years", collectors are statisfied! Lots of songs also from the Kiss me album: I would include "How beautiful you are...", underratede song, but that's it. More than 3 hours concert is really enough! Nice to see again my old love Cranes, it's a pity that amplification sucked, they really needed a better soundcheck, but the time was few.
In conclusion: brilliant gig, Robert seems to have a special feeling with Rome. Too much pop for me but, looking back at the calendar, I suddenly realize (oh my God!) they're on tour since 1976 and it's quite impossible to hear a sequence like "The Holy Hour"/"The Drwoning man"/"The Funeral party" in a popular gig. And, oh yes, they already did it somwhere!

  42. Review from David Fargier:

We arrived at the venue when it was about 6:45, a country side hyppodrome and a good place to organize concerts due to the existing stuctures for food, drinks... About 3,000 people were already there, and the shadowed seated area was full. We ran in front of the stage to see Cranes. Lovely Alison did a good job but the sound wasn't strong enough. They played some of their classics and a bit of recent material as well. The slow-mid tempo of their songs is sometimes difficult to find and we heard a few mistakes but it was a good starter even if the guitarist completely missed the tune of the closing song.

After a few/lots of beers, I noticed that some fans from curefans.com and closetocure.com had put some banners on the seated balcony. The venue slowly and quietly packed but I managed to see almost everyone, my french friends and most of the previous eve meet up. Once again I want to say ciao to Maurizio, Georgia, Marcel, Alessandro/Grego, Marco, Stefano, Thomas, Katrin, Soledad, Antoinette, Nico, Mauro, Gilles, Rani, Frédéric, Bill, Sandrine, Stéphanie and a few others I met : you made my Cure nights and day as much as the concert ! I feel proud to be European with so wonderful, simple, accessible, caring people you are and I see at every single why The Cure made you different. Love, guys.

Someone told me that Eden Gallup was seated on the balcony and Marcel talked a few minutes with Jason, who seemed glad and relaxed but had to run away when the crowd noticed he was there. Simon and Roger showed up to just before Crystal Castle went on stage. This band is amazing, playing rock, singing punk on techno tunes. Powerful, brilliant, drinky... a good success for them. I would have loved to better hear the singer's voice but it was a very good set.

Then we had to wait about one hour before The Cure got on stage. The venue was packed for good but I don't know if it sold out or not. I'd say there were about 16-18000 attendees but I have to check (if I can because in Italy reliable figures about capacities and attendances are quite hard to find).

Those who read my posts yesterday may have thought I was completely drunk with an pill in my stomach every 2 minutes. But it wasn't the case. The whole set was perfect, the Roman crowd one of the best public I've ever seen.

Robert's voice was clear and expressive. He changed a few lyrics on 'One Hundred Years' and 'Let's Go To Bed', danced a bit during 'Lullaby' and the 3rd encore. We got almost every song we could have dreamt of. It's the best concert I've seen in my entire life and I've seen hundreds ! The boys were enjoying every second of it and Reeves is a good challenger for the 'old 4' who played incredibly well, especially Jason. The next time I read something bad about him, I'll be a Buddha wearing a Mona Lisa smile. Robert was on a cloud, as we say here in France, and I'm sure he knows how above this concert was.

But maybe they can do even better, who knows? So see you in Bilbao!

    2. David wanted to add this to his review:

"And yes, Robert like any other artist likes to hear some noise. Sometimes some Cure fans put "their nose up", disgusted by all those stupid people singing and applauding like hell. It's just a kind of snobism. Robert talks about the need of the public answer while on stage in a recent interview. So make some noise!"

  46. Not to say that this show wasn't amazing, but the setlist appears to be with the same songs they've been playing. Only thing that looks different is that they've done a really nice encore and didn't exclude one encore set over another. Even seems they planned to play later with some Pornography songs as I've read up there.

    Other than that...

  47. I arrived with my Italian chum Valeria as Crystal Castles finished their set and found it surprisingly easy to get pretty close to the front. It was "fucking hot" as Robert described it and Italians do love a cigarette, so I felt like I was being slowly smoked like a kipper!
The audience was much warmer and jovial than English ones, I have seen the Cure live six times before in London. When bottles of water were being tossed into the sweaty crowd much hilarity and cheeky banter ensued.
The concert itself was absolutely brilliant, 36 songs played, over three hours. I felt very lucky to hear SDWAY played live and adored Bananafishbones. Robert seemed incredibly happy, dancing about and making cute facial expressions, etc. Simon was in very high spirits, doing some rock-God, guitar hero poses and raising his bass guitar to the drums/ Jason in tribute at the climax of The Kiss. Jason's drumming was phenomenal, really on it and dullards who continue to moan about him just need to go to a concert and experience the power of it live, not base their ill-founded judgements on Youtube videos. I would have taken more videos with my internet enabled telephone but it was incredibly annoying to have one's view blocked by a sea of glowing phones and even in some cases an iPad! All in all, it was a great night and the band played with passion and verve, Robert's voice is as strong, if not stronger than ever. Roll on Wish re-release and new material from the band I say! Grazie mille a mia amica Valeria, x. Chas

  48. Finally back from a very hot Rome and what a 48 hrs or so. The Cure were simply magnificent, helped by a great venue & crowd that were totally up for it. We (me & my brother Joe) got in around 6ish and were standing a few feet from Jason during the Cranes, as mentioned elsewhere, he left after a couple of songs. Both The Cranes & Crystal Castles were good. Having seen The Cure numerous times this was certainly one of the finest shows I’ve witnessed & having the extra guitar made a big difference. The Kiss was the highlight for me, but it was all good, all very very good.

  49. I confirm also live it seemed to me that Robert had the fence a few notes ... I think the first time for 30 years now .. footnotes: On the stage reserved for guests under the grandstand where I............the small child of Simon Gallup the singer of Cranes
Jason Cooper .. during the execution of the above Cranes was sitting in my guest area to 20 feet away from me .. 5 minutes until we started to get closer .. and is gone.........
But the only one to present to 2.00 PM at the car park greeted very friendly and helpful
unfortunately .. then they turned on the Mercedes vans they are empty .probably disappeared to another exit, memorable concert ever seen so much feeling between Robert and the Italian crowd as usually, one of those, Conegliano 2002.........

  50. Gig was great, not the 'special' set-list some of us were expecting but it certainly didn't disappoint in atmosphere, quality and quantity. You can check out my photo's here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.462717983752564.111331.339065959451101&type=1
