Thanks to Marco for his dogged determination to fight through phone & connection problems to send the setlist, and to Perfect.Murder, David Fargier, and @anedonia74 for their reports and help.

02:21 - Perfect.Murder: Beautiful Same Deep Water....Great light, amazing sound from where I'm standing. 15 rows down in front of Reeves.
01:33 - Perfect.Murder: Primary gets better and better and so does The Walk. Have I mentioned Jason's drumming? HUGE!
23:52 - Robert takes the stage to explain, in Spanish, that there's a tech problem with the keyboards. Give them 2 minutes. Sort of shrugs, stretches out his arms, walks off. That was too funny!
23:37 - @anedonia74: Techs have been fiddling with keyboards for a few minutes now. Maybe some problem?
23:32 - Perfect.Murder: Some delay, don't know why.
22:58 - @anedonia74: Cure gear being brought on stage - technicians busy as bees
22:36 - Perfect.Murder made it to the show with 45 minutes to spare. His plane didn't land until 21:20, so he was cutting it very close! Glad he made it there in time!
19:21 - @anedonia74: main stage ()

There's supposed to be a webcast, though this says they are still waiting for confirmation for broadcast rights from The Cure. Keep an eye on this page for updates, and I will update here as soon we have confirmation either way. If there is a live stream, it looks like it will be on this page.
Update: The Cure will be webcast tonight! Straight from Roger: "Yes the first hour is approved!"

The Cure are scheduled to play another 3 hour show tonight, from 23:15 - 02:15. In the US, that's a start time of 5:15 PM eastern, 4:15 PM central, 3:15 PM mountain, and 2:15 PM pacific.

  9. Well, the Burn advert has become interesting again. One of those things where it's cool, gets old, then becomes so old that it's cool again.

  16. We went to The Cure's hotel and met Jason, took a few pictures with him, kind as usual. Saw Roger and Reeves too but a bit in a rush. Robert and Simon arrived at about 9:30 pm and jumped in their rooms. Went dowstairs half an hour later but hadn't time enough to let us take pictures with them. Attived at the venue, over packed by noisy crowd. A problem with keyboards avoid the gig start on time. Mo more battery but will review the concert tomorrow. So much to have crossed half Europe for 3 gigs in a week. Antoinette, Nico, Gilles and Christophe join me to send big Cure kisses to the whole fans in the world. So happy to share this special moment with you, guys. Craig, we love u and thank u so much for letting us post the information through the best Cure fansite ever ! An announcement right now. Robert on stage ! "Un technical problema. Dos minutos !"

    1. Sorry but I have to disagree. One thing I think Reeves brings to the band that is such a nice addition is a little bit of a rock edge. He had such a nice little solo during this song that really stood out compared to Porl. Don't get me wrong, I really like Porl, but Reeves is a great addition to the cure's sound.

      Delete
    2. I think there were many times when Porl just rocked it. However, and this is not necessarily a criticism, but during the 4Tour he just seemed to go 'off the grid' with it. It's been fun seeing Reeves making it his own.

  75. Some notes from @anedonia74

"Hi Craig, sorry for the blackout of updates. Cell signal was bad. Good gig, tight performance, everyone in good spirits. Roger had further trouble with keyboards and looked frustrated. Robert ended BDC with a broken string ... "a sign from heaven"."

  77. I guess it's getting a bit boring all this mourning about Porl/Pearl, seriously. He's in a different vibe, the band is in a different vibe (and better than I've seen in a while), and Reeves isn't any amateur playing wrong chords and out of tempo. Robert has proven today that he doesn't need a guitar player (just in case there aren't any available after he uses them all, though). But "that's why it's The Cure, not Robert Smith". And the 2012 Cure doesn't have Porl. Stop the whining and enjoy what we have - brilliant and professional musicians.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Well Said Mr Mandelbrot I loved Porl But he is now in the past I have been lucky enough to get to 3 shows so r & all have been great Robert has been in great voice & spirits & there is an excellent vibe going through the Band undoubtedly Reeves is a top notch guitarist but I hope he dosent start show boating too much.you are right they are brilliant & professional musicians . well to me they are best band known to humanity

  79. I'm really loving this Cure lineup. I wasn't sure about RG at first and think he had some teething troubles early with slightly OTT soloing and effects choices. But he has shown a commendable humility in improving his "wingman" role to the point where I think this band could well rival the 1995-2004 lineup (and for me definitely surpasses the 4Cure; even though the two concerts I attended were great fun, I think a 5-piece Cure is ideal).

Anyway, endlessly bemoaning the absence of Porl Thompson over the internet is so boring and pointless I don't even know why you would. Especially after he released that gracious statement and is obviously happy and comfortable with his choice.

  81. Review from David Fargier:

Some smart friends of mine, Gilles and Nico, wandered the 5 stars hotels in Bilbao in the morning to figure out where The Cure could be and easily found the place they were staying at. About 15 fans from Belgium, Italy, Australia, Spain and France gathered there trying to be as discreet as possible (not succeeded in fact !).

At about 7:30-8 pm, Jason showed up and kindly allowed us to take pictures with him and signed a few autographs. Reeves and Roger went downstairs a bit later on but seemed to be in a rush to reach the festival venue. So we couldn't talk to them before they took a van with Jason.

Simon and Robert arrived at the hotel very late, rushed into they hotel, Robert saying they didn't have any time. They went out half an hour later and jumped into a car. We took 2 taxis to go to the little hill above Bilbao, with a beautiful view upon the city's lights.

The venue was incredibly packed and we had to pass behind the whole crowd to get to the right side of the main stage in the somehow 20th row. We quickly noticed that the crew where a bit late even if Jason had told us they would go on stage at 11:30 pm. We saw that Roger's roadie and some festival technicians were trying to fix a problem with keyboards. I first thought it was the pedal but it was more serious and even fixed, Roger sounded a bit strange from time to time and had to unplugged something under his keyboards during the show. We think it may have forced the boys to delete 'Trust' from the scheduled set list.

Robert came on stage, a first time to say they had 'un technical problema, dos minutos', then came back with his acoustic guitar to play a few songs during the fixing. We were totally out of breath and didn't believe what was happening. He made a mini set with 'Three Imaginary Boys', 'Fire In Cairo' and an astonishing slow bluesy version of 'BDC'. Thank to this problem, we got something that will become a mythical moment in Cure history.

The show started about 50 minutes late (excluding the acoustic set) with a great powerful version of 'Open' (instead of 'Plainsong' already chosen in Barcelona). The beginning of the main set was really intense and the crowd responded well. 'A Forest' started with an under tone keyboard that made Robert laugh, talking about a "goth version of 'A Forest". Then it started to get colder and colder and the public was a bit frozen to react as much as they did initially. The boys had some more difficulties to keep the same energy for a few titles but enthusiasm came back a bit with 'Wrong Number' (Robert shouting 'allo' to provoke the audience), 'One Hundred Years' with once again a little change in the lyrics during the first verse' and a booming 'End', the best live version I've heard.

Everyone got into it with the encores. People singing and dancing on singles and ending with a thundering ovation at the end of the show, Robert finished it doing the clown as he'd broken a chord, once again on this tour.

The light show and the imagines on the screens were the best I saw in Summer Cure. My five stars go to 'Boys Don't Cry' 1, 'Open', 'High', 'The End Of The World','Want', The Walk', 'A Forest', 'Primary' 'End', 'The Same Deep Water As You', 'The Blood','Why Can't I Be You?', 'Boys Don't Cry' 2.

As almost each date this tour -I didn't attend all shows but reading the reviews makes me think it's obvious- a total 3 hour orgasm.

    See you in Nyon !

    David.

  82. Review from JC/Perfect.Murder:

Concert was great. Obviously the delay put Robert in the mood and there's no need to go over his acoustic set... Just awesome. His guitar playing is fantastic....Strange start of A Forest prompted RS to introduce it as the "Mastodon" version... The opening key notes were lower than on Cold!!!

Again my favs were Doing the Unstuck, The Walk, Primary and Sleep When I'm Dead...So glad i traveled over to meet my friends... They met RS. and SG at the airport as they were heading to Portugal this morning at 12.

Overcrowded in the pit and hardly any security.... Probably still stoned from the whiffs of spliffs going around.
