Agreed, Craig. That's the first time I've thought, "wow" upon hearing a song for the first time live by The Cure; of course I haven't been online that long in terms of Cure albums.
I almost don't want to listen to it too much so I can enjoy it when it's released. Luckily, I've forgotten the melody already.
I'm going to add another me too comment here. Wow, it sounds like this album's plainsong. Not a single, but fucking brilliant. Friday can't come soon enough. Monty
I havent had a chance to hear this track yet, but I hear comments like Plainsong successor and feel very nervous, Plainsong is untouchable for me, is it really that good?
After one listen, for me it falls somewhere between "Anniversary" and "Bloodflowers"...so, right now, I'm personally not overwhelmed...maybe after I hear it a few more times.
No, it's not that good to me. Not quite "Plainsong" good. But whatever, there's no point to that comparison beyond hyperbole, since Disintegration is this well-established masterpiece, etc.
I think it's very pretty, and I think the Mogwai comparison is quite apt.
Take effusive fan reactions with a pinch of salt. No offense to anyone.
I think it is quite lovely. I forgot to mention in my comment about the Denver show that besides sounding like something from Disintegration, the guitar solo reminds me of something from Bloodflowers. :) I'm glad someone finally posted a link to it.
You can't compare it to Plainsong anyway since PS is synth-heavy and this is guitar-heavy. I really love it, and I really love PS. But PS is not my favorite Cure song ever - that would be Holy Hour - and so I could conceivably rank this higher than PS. PS is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but this song is damn gorgeous too. I like the metallic, echoey guitars, and the languorous mood...
I try to judge a song just for itself, comparison is always hard and sometimes misguiding. And there is already one "plainsong" and I don´t need another one, so it´s good that they´re different, you have to say it´s a good song.
Clockwise: I think it's fair to compare it to "Plainsong" - at least the current rendition of it, sans keyboards. Maybe it's not so close in terms of tune/lushness, but it is similar in terms of the mood it set with the long intro (so good to hear a new song with a lovely long intro, just like the old days). It was a very moody piece, and I loved it. Can't wait to hear the studio version.
altr2elise, only a few hours to go! And what can be better than spending your Friday night listening to two amazing new Cure songs for the first time? ;)
Sam: I agree that it stands on its own as a great song! I simply was trying to make a comparison to describe it for those who hadn't heard it yet. :) By this comparison, I did not mean that it was "Plainsong Part II" - not at all. What I meant was that it served a similar purpose as this - a brilliant, strong, moody opener that sets the tone for a classic Cure album. Very exciting!
No internet at home and my work blocks U-tube until 12pm, so this morning has been AGONY having seen that "Underneath the stars" has been posted! Yay! Midday! Here goes!
no it's not really plainsong. the only thing similar is the long intro, i think its more like to wish impossible things meets anniversary.
this is the best song of all the new ones so far. much better then the somehow blah blah blah we are all so happy only one/freak show...stuff...at least there is hope I will like that album.
but do unserstand me right, I DO like some of the more pop tunes, if they are killer songs like high, heaven ...but they older they get the more obvious they sound when they try to do pop stuff. as long as they are songs such as this I will still like them, but this is only my opinion.
I did a little bit of reading about post-rock because although I'd heard the term bandied about a lot, I wasn't sure what it was, exactly. After having read about it, I now do agree with some of the others that it has some elements of post-rock, and even shoegaziness. I really really really love this song and hope that the mix of it on the album enables it to shine as it should. It is a song that deserves to showcased as dynamically as possible.
I know very little about the technical side of things, but after the fiasco that was the TC mix, I am understanding more and more how production can make or break songs.
Robert should take a cue from the latest Raveonettes album, which has a really rich, reverb/echo-laden mix. Underneath the Stars deserves that kind of treatment.
replied in other topic... posted here for visibility:
only "studio" version of forever is a version from BBC session... don't seek it out it sucks... it's also rumoured that "three" on seventeen seconds is forever
Wow. I thought I couldn't get anymore excited about this album but this song will smack the biggest smile right on onto the faces of anyone in love with the Cure from 1987-1992.
well yeah there is a bit of post rock in it...or is there a bit of the cure in post rock...what was first the egg or ...;-) anyways as I said before..best new song so far..by far...
I seem to remember reading somewhere that The Cure is one of the major influence of post-rock. UTS does have a post-rock feel (I've been listening a couple of post-rock bands and the song does remind me of them a bit) but it's also very Cure-ish. I can't really see this as a bad thing.
Is it me, or is this album contrived to please all categories of Cure fans?
UTS - Languid ethereal atmospheric track For the Distint-and Wish-obsessed (though it's far better than anything on Wish)
SWID - Modernized HOTD track to satisfy those stuck in 1985
ABINK - Lush ballad to gladden those with a penchant for Distin/BF tearjerkers
PB - Generic rock with wailing vocals and sad undertones to placate the KMKMKM crowd
OO - Straight-up Cure-pop to lure in the masses once again
FS - Funky Cure-pop that threatens to be divisive among fans as it calls up a certain kinship with the whimsical funk of KM/Wish/WMS
and then you have BRDB, which kind of stands on its own, and yet calls to mind the post-punk of 17 and Faith and also harder rock of the Top and KM and even begs references to classic rock, with a bit of psychobilly thrown in.
Woo hoo!!!! I'm home and have finally listened to both songs. UTS is definitely my favourite of the two, but I don't really think they should be compared. Love UTS to bits!!!!!! Thanks for wondering, Jenny
corrosive - I am envious as anything - hope you have a fantastic time at the show. I will be watching through COF and can't wait to join in the conversation. The show is Saturday morning (my time) so I don't have to worry about someone looking over my shoulder at work.
Have good day all. I'm off to veg on the couch and watch the football replay (go the Mighty magpies). To those going to to the show - have a great night, for those who aren't, see you here in the blog.
i think people tend to over-analyse when comparing the new songs to old cure songs / musical genres / other bands... - it all sounds like the cure to me... and at the end of the day thats all that matters!
Yes, I hope they get UTS and BRDG so we can hear them again. :-) But I think at some point they'll change up the setlists and not include those songs, ya know? I mean, where the hell is ABINK??
Gawd, though, UTS... still sends shivers. If they produce it properly - i.e., with lots of luxurious shimmering echoing depth and richness - it could be the best opener they've ever done.
And for me that's saying a lot considering how much I love openers like Holy Hour, PS, Want, OOTW and Lost. (The Kiss is a great song live but on KM it's just too flat, IMO)
Clockwise: We didn't get "Sleep When I'm Dead" in Denver, so yeah, they are rotating the new stuff around for sure. And yeah - where did the boy Robert never knew go? Maybe he finally met him so the song is out of date now. :)
It's funny cuz SWID was my favorite along with PB until I heard these two new songs. Sorry you didn't get SWID. I am hopeful I get UTS and BRDB in ATL/Charlotte/Austin, or at least in one of those cities. I am also hopeful for PB and ABINK. A little less hopeful for FS and not hopeful at ALL for The Only One.
LOL, though, about the Boy Robert Never Knew. Maybe he did meet him after all, and he'll write a new song called The Boy I Didn't Know But Now Know and Don't Like.
Clockwise: It's okay - I love "Sleep When I'm Dead", but it was worth it to exchange those songs for the new opener/closer! :) I'm so excited to see what they will pull out of their collective hat for your shows! My mom was asking me when they're playing Florida and I told her I would go with her to a show there... I have my fingers crossed she will take me up on it so I will get to see them again, too!
And LOL about your speculation about the new song Robert is writing about that boy he finally met. I think it would make a great b-side for ABINK. ;) Heehee.
Errrgh, I meant to say that it was worth it to exchange "that song" for the new opener/closer, not "those songs". I do realize that "Sleep When I'm Dead" is only one song, but my brain is not quite awake yet. :D
Sleep When I'm Dead Parts I II and III? They could be prequels and sequels called Sleep when I'm Dying and Sleep When I'm Rotting in my Grave, with Sleep When I'm Dead appearing right in the middle, obviously.
YES! I AM VERY EXCITED FOR TONIGHT! I really hope Robert's voice is doing better. Underneath the stars is my new fav for the time being. This may be the greatest day of my life.
Lol, Clockwise. :D It's no longer enough to write one song on a theme anymore. At the rate you're conjuring up these new song concepts, both "Sleep When I'm Dead" and "A Boy I Never Knew" will each be its own concept album! ;)
Corrosive: You may have said before, but is this your first time seeing them? Regardless, they freakin' rock right now and so do the new songs. I'm so jealous - SLC is only 8 hours away from me I think...I could still make it, right? (Screw my houseguests from Germany - they'll either understand or have to come with me! ;) )
Hey thanks v! If we get a similar setlist to the one at Red Rocks I'll be a happy camper. Although I will say...though I'm not holding out too much hope, in my dreams I'm still hoping they play Same Deep Water, The Figurehead, Holy Hour, and Watching Me Fall... :)
Oh well, at least there's a distinct possibility of hearing The Blood, Maybe Someday, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, and Primary. And can't forget UTS and BRDB!
How the heck am I supposed to get anything done at work??
Exploding Boy - Hey You!!! The songs are great. Did you get my text re the cd? I can't believe it is on such "limited" release. If I see a copy anywhere I will grab it for you.
P.S. I NEVER realised that playing the guitar hurt your fingers so much :-(
Clockwise: But, but, I have to be nice to them - they took me to the Hamburg/Berlin shows in Feb and I want them to invite me back next time The Cure plays there. :D :D
Kinda glad I don't have You Tube access here, though, because if I did I would be playing these songs ad nauseum, and I really don't want to get sick of them before the album.
Todd - my work is REALLY suffering at the moment. Especially given that the concerts are happening during workhours (Oz time). Very hard to focus when they is a setlist to follow and good conversation on the blog.
V, in that case you have to kiss their asses. I would treat them to the Cure show in SLC, by all means. :-)
MY big dilemma is: what other Cure show can I attend? I'll be back from Austin in time to haul my derriere down to Tampa. I can't make the NYC dates as it's too close to my liason with Tom Waits in Houston (flying there for one night to catch the almight Raindog himself). I prolly shoulda just stayed in Texas to attend the Houston and Dallas Cure shows and then to attend Waits, but I am already gone long enough from my precious pussies for that.
V- Yes it's my first Cure concert ever! at first i was disapointed when i found out no more keyboards (since i play keyboards) but from the videos i've seen i don't think there will be anything to be disappointed about (except Just Like Heaven desperately needs the strings). I missed their last concert in 2004 becuase it was schedueled like the month after i moved to Illinois for a couple years.
It's bedtime for this little black duck. I'm gonna sleep Underneath the Stars and will join all of those living vicariously through the SLC concert go-ers tomorrow (my time).
Corrosive: I totally hear you. I missed the Swing tour (would've been my second show) because they came to FL the week after I went away to college in NC. They had played Chapel Hill (where I went to school) in the previous tour, but not on the Swing tour. :'( With no car and no friends there, I missed them. My best friend at the time had front row center seats. I was so sad and bummed out, but I've made up for it since then. :D You'll make up for it tonight, too!
My douche bag friend e-mailed me some news article this morning saying the Cure cancelled the show for tonight. Basically what he did was take an old article and changed the dates. After reading thru it i knew it was bull shit but i was pretty bummed for a second. That's just somethin you don't do to a cure fan!
corrosive: too bad you missed Curiosa, it was great. I was on the lawn towards the back of Usana, so not as close as I'd have liked to be (or am going to be tonight!), but being my first Cure show it was just awesome.
btw, I went to Jersey for a couple of years. ;) how long have you been back?
Todd, you are very lucky. i was so pissed when i found out i was gonna miss it. I've been back since the beginning of 2006. Married now, just had a baby.
personally i'm glad i skipped curiosa... it was too far away from where i lived at the time... cure's set was too short... and i wouldn't have paid money to see any of the other performers. i'm probably just spoiled having seen many full blown cure shows...
Clockwise: I was at Chapel Hill from August 1996 - May 2000. I skipped graduation to go to the Dream Tour show in West Palm Beach, which was the best decision of my life! :D When did you live in NC?
yeah my wife loves the Cure! i got her into them. She isn't obsessed with them by any means but she knows most the songs. We even got our baby the Cure songs done as lullabyes and ordered him a t-shirt.
nice! haha lullabies, that's awesome...I'll have to remember that when we have our first kid. Kinda the same thing here...I've been inundating my wife with The Cure for the past while and she likes most of it, but yeah, not nearly the fanatic I am.
V, I was in NC twice. I was born in Greensboro in 67 and lived there 10 years before we moved to Austin, Texas. I moved back to NC for grad school from 1990-1992.
I still have friends in the area and go back once in a while.
I love Chapel Hill.
IMO, NC is the best southern state to live in. Sure, there are some backwards-ass politics, but there are also plenty o' forward thinkers owing to the several awesome universities and literary communities.
ah yes, i think you're right: he may say that as part of the lyrics. but it's really quite difficult to make many of them out, other than underneath the stars.
This is the best I could do. Many words are probably wrong. And the St. Louis and Denver versions each have different words in different places. I think RS is still working them out too. : )
Across the years, like this with you Underneath the stars above For 13 billion years of you It's beautiful and ours alone tonight Underneath The Stars
Spinning round and round with you Watching shadows melt the light? Stars above our eyes are ???? Another space is ours alone tonight Watching shadows melt
The waves....break The waves....break
Whisper in my ear a wish ???????????????????????? A voice inside my head, a kiss It's infinite and ours alone tonight Watching summer die
Flying here like this with you Underneath the stars at night For 13 billion years of you It's infinite and ours alone tonight Underneath the stars
Everything ????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ?????????????? each other's arms so near and so far ?????????????? Beneath the stars
And I'm obsessed with this song. I can't fall asleep at night without hearing it in my head. I lose my concentration when reading or watching a movie, all due to this song. It's beautiful, it's haunting, and it makes me wish impossible things again. Damn you RS!
Craig, my long-held admiration and affection has just now turned to ardent love! ;-)))) Seriously, sweetie, you always did and will forever more ROCK ROCK ROCK!!!!
Thanks sooooooo much for deciphering the lyrics, but I gotta say, after reading the words you so cleverly came up with, I'm even more obsessed! How the hell am I going to hold out till September? :-[
Ms. Pussy has a great idea. (She often does, you know.) ;-) Why not post the lyrics on the home page and see what happens? The poet might not speak, but perhaps other fans or insiders with better recordings will.
thanks rev!
ReplyDeleteOh this is song is amazing, i can´t explain what makes me feel, there is no words for something that beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMaybe "tears falling down my face" will be a closer definition....
RS YOU´RE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME...
An A+ from me. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteWOW WOW WOW!!! Now this is The Cure!!! What an instant classic. I just love it!
ReplyDeleteMuch better sound than that other video. Sounds so awesome! Can't wait to hear it live tomorrow night!
ReplyDeleteAgreed, Craig. That's the first time I've thought, "wow" upon hearing a song for the first time live by The Cure; of course I haven't been online that long in terms of Cure albums.
ReplyDeleteI almost don't want to listen to it too much so I can enjoy it when it's released. Luckily, I've forgotten the melody already.
Maybe it´s true: NO filler, all killer.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to add another me too comment here. Wow, it sounds like this album's plainsong. Not a single, but fucking brilliant. Friday can't come soon enough.
ReplyDeleteMonty
Freakin' love it. I hear Deftones in there a bit too. But gorgeous in that languid, shimmering, deeply melancholic Cure-ious way.
ReplyDeleteI havent had a chance to hear this track yet, but I hear comments like Plainsong successor and feel very nervous, Plainsong is untouchable for me, is it really that good?
ReplyDeleteAfter one listen, for me it falls somewhere between "Anniversary" and "Bloodflowers"...so, right now, I'm personally not overwhelmed...maybe after I hear it a few more times.
ReplyDeletealastair,
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not that good to me.

ReplyDeleteI've now got 13 billion more reasons to buy the new record.
Lyrics! I need lyrics!
Clockwise: I think it's fair to compare it to "Plainsong" - at least the current rendition of it, sans keyboards. ReplyDeleteWow; Robert hitting the high notes on this song during his recovery. Not sure if this a good thing or bad.
ReplyDeleteThis one is too beautiful for words. I knew I'd love it ever since I heard the title--and I was right!!
ReplyDeleteQuite possibly going to be one of my favorite songs on the album. Oh why do we have to wait until September?
Jenny - lucky you, getting to listen to this during your lunch break. I've only got 9 hours to go!!!!
ReplyDeletealtr2elise, only a few hours to go! And what can be better than spending your Friday night listening to two amazing new Cure songs for the first time? ;)
ReplyDeleteJenny - yes, just a Few Hours After This! Not that I am counting.
ReplyDeleteClockwise and Bernie have it right. It's good on its own merits, not because it compares one way or another to something else...yo yo
ReplyDeleteSam: I agree that it stands on its own as a great song! I simply was trying to make a comparison to describe it for those who hadn't heard it yet. :) By this comparison, I did not mean that it was "Plainsong Part II" - not at all. ReplyDeleteIt's a beauty!
ReplyDeleteAmazing song, finally a good bass line, a particular drum, the guitars sound and Robert voice...
ReplyDeleteI think that They work so much better with these slow songs...

ReplyDeleteMY big dilemma is: what other Cure show can I attend? I'll be back from Austin in time to haul my derriere down to Tampa. I can't make the NYC dates as it's too close to my liason with Tom Waits in Houston (flying there for one night to catch the almight Raindog himself). I prolly shoulda just stayed in Texas to attend the Houston and Dallas Cure shows and then to attend Waits, but I am already gone long enough from my precious pussies for that.
Anyscrew...
Yeah v, for sure play nice if that's the case! I can't imagine the thrill of seeing The Cure in Berlin.
ReplyDeleteclockwise: believe me, I'm pretty much giving work the middle finger today!
Work ALWAYS deserves a middle finger. Life is about leisure, and art, and erudition...
ReplyDeleteClockwise - the only thing about work though is that it allows me to afford my Cure fascination.
ReplyDeleteyeah, the upside to work is the paycheck. the downside is everything else.
ReplyDeleteV- Yes it's my first Cure concert ever! at first i was disapointed when i found out no more keyboards (since i play keyboards) but from the videos i've seen i don't think there will be anything to be disappointed about (except Just Like Heaven desperately needs the strings). I missed their last concert in 2004 becuase it was schedueled like the month after i moved to Illinois for a couple years.

ReplyDeleteIt's bedtime for this little black duck. I'm gonna sleep Underneath the Stars and will join all of those living vicariously through the SLC concert go-ers tomorrow (my time).
ReplyDeleteNight night
Corrosive - Enjoy the show.
ReplyDeletethank!
ReplyDeleteCorrosive: I totally hear you.
ReplyDeleteMy douche bag friend e-mailed me some news article this morning saying the Cure cancelled the show for tonight. Basically what he did was take an old article and changed the dates. After reading thru it i knew it was bull shit but i was pretty bummed for a second. That's just somethin you don't do to a cure fan!
ReplyDeletecorrosive: too bad you missed Curiosa, it was great. I was on the lawn towards the back of Usana, so not as close as I'd have liked to be (or am going to be tonight!), but being my first Cure show it was just awesome.
ReplyDeletebtw, I went to Jersey for a couple of years. ;) how long have you been back?
Todd, you are very lucky. i was so pissed when i found out i was gonna miss it. I've been back since the beginning of 2006. Married now, just had a baby.
ReplyDeletepersonally i'm glad i skipped curiosa... it was too far away from where i lived at the time...
ReplyDeletecure's set was too short...
and i wouldn't have paid money to see any of the other performers.
i'm probably just spoiled having seen many full blown cure shows...
corrosive: I can't remember, did you say your wife is going with you? If so, is she into The Cure at all?
ReplyDeletewhen were you at chapel hill v? i used to live in nc.
ReplyDeletecorrosive have a great time. i gotta go! bbl maybes.
Clockwise: I was at Chapel Hill from August 1996 - May 2000. I skipped graduation to go to the Dream Tour show in West Palm Beach, which was the best decision of my life! :D When did you live in NC?
ReplyDeleteyeah my wife loves the Cure! i got her into them. She isn't obsessed with them by any means but she knows most the songs. We even got our baby the Cure songs done as lullabyes and ordered him a t-shirt.
ReplyDeletenice! haha lullabies, that's awesome...I'll have to remember that when we have our first kid. Kinda the same thing here...I've been inundating my wife with The Cure for the past while and she likes most of it, but yeah, not nearly the fanatic I am.
ReplyDeleteWell it will grow on her. That's how the Cure works.

ReplyDeleteI have to go now, probably for the rest of the day, but I will be thinking of everyone during the show! :) Enjoy, Todd and Corrosive!
ReplyDeletesee ya later V
ReplyDeleteHi Folks,
ReplyDeleteAccording to this french site, the

"Dream 13"..

Cheers
sounds more like a porn video than a album name
ReplyDeletejust this minute heard it the first time...
ReplyDeleteI never thought at the age of 35 a song could move me like this
Craig put it as poetic as you can - absolutely beautiful
Love the song....seems to be heavily influenced by 'Uryea Sound' from the Lost Wishes Casette. Hope there are more like it from the recent sessions.
ReplyDeletesorry - meant "Uyea Sound"
ReplyDeletetodd, he's talking about this...

I love this tune. Iam hard..
ReplyDeleteV, I was in NC twice. I was born in Greensboro in 67 and lived there 10 years before we moved to Austin, Texas. I moved back to NC for grad school from 1990-1992.
ReplyDeleteI still have friends in the area and go back once in a while.
I love Chapel Hill.
IMO, NC is the best southern state to live in. Sure, there are some backwards-ass politics, but there are also plenty o' forward thinkers owing to the several awesome universities and literary communities.
Listening to this song with headphones. WOW! If you haven't done it yet, do it. Mmmmm mmmmmm... that's some yummy Cure ear-treats right thar!
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing "13 billion years" (as in the approximate age of the universe). Am I 'the only one' ;-) to do so? Anti-time pussy, what say you, my love?
ReplyDeletethat's MISS anti-time pussy to TOI!
ReplyDelete13 Billion Years you're hearin'? Can you elab?
Ok, MISS AP... ;-)
ReplyDeleteI can't make out many of the words, but I'm pretty sure he sings "...13 billion years..." something something...
ARGH! It's driving me fucking nuts! I'm craving the lyrics like you wouldn't believe!
Craig? Somebody else? Anyone who has made an attempt to decipher the words, PULEEZ post what you've got. TX!
ah yes, i think you're right: he may say that as part of the lyrics. but it's really quite difficult to make many of them out, other than underneath the stars.
ReplyDeletei can't get this song out of my head.
This is the best I could do. Many words are probably wrong. And the St. Louis and Denver versions each have different words in different places. I think RS is still working them out too. : )
ReplyDeleteAcross the years, like this with you
Underneath the stars above
For 13 billion years of you
It's beautiful and ours alone tonight
Underneath The Stars
Spinning round and round with you
Watching shadows melt the light?
Stars above our eyes are ????
Another space is ours alone tonight
Watching shadows melt
The waves....break
The waves....break
Whisper in my ear a wish
????????????????????????
A voice inside my head, a kiss
It's infinite and ours alone tonight
Watching summer die
Flying here like this with you
Underneath the stars at night
For 13 billion years of you
It's infinite and ours alone tonight
Underneath the stars
Everything ?????
??????????????
??????????????
??????????????
each other's arms
so near and so far
??????????????
Beneath the stars
The waves....break
And I'm obsessed with this song. I can't fall asleep at night without hearing it in my head. I lose my concentration when reading or watching a movie, all due to this song. It's beautiful, it's haunting, and it makes me wish impossible things again. Damn you RS!
ReplyDeleteCraig, if those lyrics are the genuine ones, then they are GORGEOUS. Kudos to you for transcribing them - you've got damn discerning ears!
ReplyDeleteI am obsessed with this song too. I find it to be the most beautiful Cure song - and the most beautiful song by anyone - I've ever heard.
I hope they don't fuck up the production. It deserves a dynamic mix to make it shimmer and devastate.
You should post those lyrics on the front page, Craig! And maybe that will entice RS to post at the official any corrections/additions. :-)
Craig, my long-held admiration and affection has just now turned to ardent love! ;-)))) Seriously, sweetie, you always did and will forever more ROCK ROCK ROCK!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks sooooooo much for deciphering the lyrics, but I gotta say, after reading the words you so cleverly came up with, I'm even more obsessed! How the hell am I going to hold out till September? :-[
Ms. Pussy has a great idea. (She often does, you know.) ;-) Why not post the lyrics on the home page and see what happens? The poet might not speak, but perhaps other fans or insiders with better recordings will.
