This should make Robert happy, doesn't not want success? Or was that the old Robert? I get so confused...lol...
Since I'm the first comment here's hoping that Fat Bob can get over this cold before the next few shows !!! I would be surprised to see any major changes in the setlist this week until his voice clears up.
I'm praying there are no cancellations, my friend was at Chicago and said he looked like hell by the end of the set and could barely sing some of the encore!!!
Sometimes you even hear him changing melodies on the fly to avoid those really high notes. Especially with all the screaming on the last album.
One of the most disheartening things I've ever seen is Robert Smith struggling through "Never" on some televised concert, losing his voice in the process, punctuating the song with a barely audible wheeze of the words, "in love."
I feel like the guy is pushing himself too hard, as is his proclivity.
he was experiencing some troubles few years ago, but at the moment he's GREAT (of course when he's not sick) and you can tell that if you see them recently.
He was perfect in Boston, even by the end of the third hour. People get sick once in while and I can only imagine that one would become run down pretty quickly on a tour such as this.
#48? That's dishearteningly (sp?) low for a band like The Cure, but not really surprising given the current "frustrations" and "confusions" with the new releases.
And as for Robert's voice; he sounded amazing at Wembley in March and didn't show any sign of struggling so I'm sorry he's not feeling too good for the next bit of the tour =( Hope it doesn't spoil the experience for anyone.
Robert's voice is getting better with every tour and every album. He seems to avoid higher notes in live versions of songs from 'The Cure' for some reason (which is frustrating because it doesn't sound as exciting), but he does that either side of some amazing vocal reinventions on the older stuff... You only had to hear THAT note in Prayers for Rain at Wembley to know that this guy has the pitch, the power and the range to bitch-slap pretty much every other male performer on the block.
It's possibly the fact that those songs are newer and possibly quite hard to sing whilst playing guitar at the same time. Anyone else tried to get the phrasing for alt. end spot on in relation to the album version whilst playing the guitar part perfectly?
Robert's vocal performance on the studio version of "The Only One" is nothing short of spectacular IMO. The falsetto at about 1;30 of the song is great and the vocal bit at the end is really cool.
He was sick, it happens and it is unfortunate for the Chicago folks.
Hopefully, he cools it on the beer for a few days and takes some herbs, Cold FX, etc ...
I ordered my single from HMV UK and it arrived in Australia today. I'm glad i didn't wait to get it here. Was a bit worried that with the getting it from overseas it might be available in stores here before it might arrive by post but i was wrong, thankfully
Been happily listening to it over and over again :)

I wasn't trying to be mean or anything, actually I'm hoping he takes care of himself. I heard his voice failing a lot in recent years and I hope he isn't pushing himself too hard.
Official UK Charts. 1/That's not my name-The Ting Tings 2/Take a Bow-Rihanna 3/4 Minutes Madonna Timberlake (...) 48/The Only one-The Cure
Nuff said..Non??
As for RS's voice overall and on the Europeean leg of the Tour it's been tiptop...any of you heard him sing "Prayers for rain" and sustain that"raiiiiinnn"bit for like 15 seconds?? Seriously go up there and try...
I couldn't tell you what the longest sustained RAAAAIINN is in the live history of the cure, but I actually timed him at 19 seconds during the Jones Beach dream tour show. :)
I think Robert's voice is in great shape considering his age. He has faltered a bit now and then, but it's stronger than it was on BF. In fact, these days it sounds FANTASTIC! Sure, it's not Pictures of You perfect, but it's damn good all the same.
As for Celine Dion, she's Canadian, no? Blame Canada AGAIN! :D
A funny thing is that when I went to see The Cure in Berlin in Feb, I got my photo taken standing under an poster advertising the Cure's show that night, and take a look at whose show is being advertised right above it! So apparently people in Europe go to her shows, too... ;)
v....obviously wouldn't even dream of saying this about ya!My airbrushing was for Celine et son mari Rene(for u french speakers)..She's in my top 3 of people i despise(Mariah Carey is oooh so number one, closely follwed by posh spice) Anyway,v, sorry for the confusion xxx
perfect.murder: No worries, I figured you meant Celine, I was just giving you a hard time because when I first read it I didn't realize you were talking about her and not me. :) I despise her as well, but, like you, not as much as I loathe Mariah Carey. :D
Just in case anyone in the UK is still struggling to find The Only One anywhere; I found it in Zavvi for £2, but was nowhere to be seen in HMV. Goodluck tracking it down =)
Spot the drunken french man who went for a 6hr lunch!! Interesting cos......and lodads of..not lads of....too much beer...oh the life of a London city boy! :-)
I haven't seen any publicity for this single in the UK. When I got mine from HMV (day of release)It looked like I had picked up the first one. I'm Suprised it made it to the top 50.
Its a good song and deserves better than a half baked attempt of a release.

Rest up Fat Bobby !!!
He's been losing his voice a lot in recent years.

Hopefully it's just a little cold and he will be over it in time for tomorrow night's show. :) *Makes Robert some tea.*

ReplyDeletePerfect Murder: Okay, so it's not the greatest photo of me ever, but geez - harsh!! ;) Or were you just referring to the Celine part? Heehee.

No airbrushing could get rid of that stain on an otherwise perfect photo.
ReplyDeleteIt's hardly surprising it only made it to #48 when it seems like Universal only pressed up about 1000 cds...
