  19. just some predictions (wonderful wishes):
#1 - 14th album will have even more keys than originally recorded during the Dream sessions; many (or all) songs will have to be re-invented/re-recorded with Roger in studio with Robert, Simon, Jason and Porl; this will delay the next album release and tour to 2012 (right along the 4-year track) to allow the proper time to devote to the anniversary DVD, Mixed Up 2, Wish, Cure in Orange, Show, Paris, etc. re-issues, holidays and then in the studio for 2011

#2 – Extended late Summer/Fall Tour, including Robert, Simon, Jason, Porl and Roger to promote the anniversary DVD (plus all the other stuff from #1)

#3 – Summer festivals (with Roger) shows (Europe only) to promote same stuff above

I really want #1 (der, that’s why it’s #1). I thought the 2007, 2008 and 2009 shows were awesome (yes, I was lucky enough to see them 3 years in a row), but I did find myself missing the keyboards. It was distracting in some songs and created conversations with my friends during the show about “oh, but this song had such good keyboard parts…”

Like any Cure fan, I’ll take what I can get today and have high hopes for the future… I think I’m getting excited for whatever is next!

  20. I dream of a Disintegration/Dark Album tour with Robert, Simon, Roger, Boris and Porl.

    ReplyDelete
  21. More than anything I would like a new tour.

It was only a year or so ago when they played Coachella...but it feels like a lifetime ago.

  22. I love Roger. He seems so happy whatever he's doing in whatever context he's doing it in. I've enjoyed the guitar centric cure, but I've often wondered why didn't they do this awesome harmony or bit. It does sound like Roger was unceremoniously dumped last time. I don't know how that would bode for the future in the cure. It's a risk with Robert. You have to risk it to get the biscuit. I like biscuits.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nice! Craig, are you going to put a link up later? Would really like a listen to this..

In other news.. Nothing anywhere in any Australian stores in regards to the remaster on the release date (yesterday 28th). Claims are that Universal has not sent anything yet..

    Is it really that difficult??

  24. don't think anyone said yet? but it's on the iplayer now, a little after the hour mark

  25. anyway,

more news of roger & robert being on good terms again is so refreshing, even if nothing official has happened yet.

and i got a nice little shout out and TSDWAY got played - thanks matt/vic :)

  26. @ Lindsey, are you "Lindsey in Pennsylvania"? If so, I'm in HBG, where are you?

Unless Lindsey is in the tiny village of Pennsylvania, somewhere outside of Bath... in which case, hi Lindsey, I've driven through your village...

  27. @J. outside philadelphia. in the ever-exciting bucks county. live here for the summer, going to school in boston :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Before this gets way out of hand, read what Roger posted on his Facebook: "I dont know why I was ambiguous about rejoining the Cure, Im not going back but its fun to tease isnt it?"

I think it's nice enough that he and Robert are friends again, and we'll see where it goes from there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's a relief!

Sorry to interrupt the Roger Lovefest, but I am much happier with Porl mimicking keyboards with his effect pedals than having Roger or anyone else forcing the keys into every song. Ideally Robert would do some keys on stage on songs where they are a very 'key' element of the song (e.g. The Walk et al.).

Frankly, Robert said it best a short while back (post-firing) when he said the problem with having a full-time keyboard player is that it forces the keys into every song, needed or not, as the player needs something to do.

Just want to add that by no means are my comments to be taken as a personal shot at Roger ...

    ReplyDelete
  30. theoretically, we could just go back to porl doing this

  31. Right now, I think there's a better chance of seeing Roger in the next version of The Cure, than of seeing Porl in it. But who knows. The Cure lineup is always in "flux". Hope it all clears up soon, so that we can get some more shows.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Using the excuse that it forces the keys into every song is a bit disingenuous. The overwhelming majority of their material has some sort of keyboard related instrument on it.
Also Roger played guitar on Open when they performed it live. So they didn't do it on every single song.
It's just a lame argument. Why disfavour 95% of your material only to accomodate 2-3 songs in the setlist that don't have keyboards on it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. And don't forget, Roger also plays tambourine! : ) So no, no forcing of keyboards in to every song. Weak argument on RS's part. As he later admitted, he just wanted to be a "rock" band for awhile. Hope he's gotten that out of his system now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. but craig do we still not have a clue who will be replacing him on guitar? :(

    ReplyDelete
  35. A lot can happen between now and the next tour. Perhaps Porl will be around for it since he seemingly quits after each tour (is that what I have heard?) and comes back. The lineup seemed to have enjoyed themselves these recent years...

    ReplyDelete
  36. No. That is Simon who quits after every tour. : )

    ReplyDelete
  37. Craig is being as ambiguous as Roger haha. I would love to see both Roger and Porl back/still in the band, although that seems like a long-shot right now.

It's a shame that as the minute we have no clear idea of what the band is and who it consists of.

    Fuck the Flux.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Andrew: I want that on a t-shirt! : )

    ReplyDelete
  39. @craig: FRAK THE FLUX would be a better shirt ;)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Maybe Robert is going solo for real this time? LOL!

I liked The Cure as a "Rock Band". I don't want to start an argument, but IMO the last 5-piece incarnation of The Cure was my least favourite lineup. For me the, WMS and BF are bottom 3 Cure albums. As the Brits say, "different horses for different courses".

But once again, Craig has pretty much confirmed Porl is gone. Damn shame!

    ReplyDelete
  41. No, I have not! Porl is in a state of flux.

I could do without a repeat of Curiosa Cure, but would sell my soul for a return of Dream Tour Cure. Or even Swing Tour Cure.

I won't even talk about what I'd do for a reunion of Prayer Tour Cure. : )

    ReplyDelete
  42. *sigh*

I just wish that there was some kind of solid news. I thought in light of the Disintegration re-issue that some news of the bands future would be released and the air would clear a little.

Now who knows how long we are going to have to wait...

  44. Craig:

I never saw either of those tour shows. I saw 87 & 89 in Toronto (was going to university out east) and 08 in Vancouver.

I believe that I live in the only million+ city in North America that The Cure has NEVER played. What luck :(

    ReplyDelete
  45. if robert and co don't do something soon i may have to let someone else take the position of my favouritest band ever

actually, i don't think i could ever bring myself to do that :P

    ReplyDelete
  46. @rob I agree with you in a lot of ways... having seen the five piece a dozen times it was brilliant to hear the songs in a different way. the band were in danger of becoming a covers band. I thought it was cool to hear the lullaby kbds played on the bass vi. i thought the sequenced parts were a bit lame, especially kyoto song.

I think the Cure would benefit with Roger AND Porl in the group.

Porl is an AMAZING guitar player (would Jimmy Page and Robert Plant work with him if he weren't?) He goes BEYOND guitar with the sounds he can make. He also plays keys rather competently. (more so than Perry, for instance)

Roger is a great player, and having him helps fill in the gaps. (Though, I wouldn't mind if they dropped some of the "stock" sounds... the vibrato violin on lovesong, and the cheesy horns on why can't i be you spring to mind)

    just my two cents.

    ReplyDelete
  47. porl was always too good to be true, really. you may say i'm a dreamer...but i'm not the only one!
    :|
he's such a badass. i refuse to listen to the flux! besides, he's already got all the tattoos. he may as well be in a band.

i cant imagine someone new coming in this late in the game.
    who would that be?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maybe they'll all kiss and makeup. I know a certain segment of the fan base would love to see that. Especially if it were on video : P

    ReplyDelete
  49. J.

Great points. I can live with Roger if Porl stays LOL!

    sofia:

I was thinking the same thing regarding the tattoos ... what a shame to have all those tattoos and no stage to show them off ...

  51. What did I miss about Porl? is he out?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Porl is in flux right now. No one knows for sure except for Porl and Robert.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Screw Porl. I'm going to be beyond happy if he's gone.
He's done about as much good for the Cure as schecter guitars have.
I've never heard the songs song as bad live as they have in the past few years.
Go back to your Zeppelin cover band baldy and don't let the door hit you in the ass.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Maybe it'll be like that season of Dallas and we can pretend the last five years have been nothing but a dream.
This band could go with a fresh start. I doubt Roger would rejoin. If he and Robert are on good terms again why risk ruining that by working together again?
I'd love to see The Prayer Tour lineup together again, but only if they were all having fun doing it. Even if it was just a one off tour.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sorry for my mistake. And yes! FRAK the flux! (BSG fan here!)

I would love the addition of Roger with the lineup as of recent. However, being a HUGE fan of "Show"...I wouldn't mind Perry being back...

    ReplyDelete
  56. To all the Porl haters, blow the dust off your Show CD and have a listen. It may remind you of exactly why he will always be welcome in The Cure. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Listen to Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and tell me Porl doesn't bring anything to the Cure... seriously.

To whoever was shitting on Porl... have you heard "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" live in the last couple of years?

Porl makes the Cure interesting... the five piece of the 2nd half of the 90s/ 1st half of the '00s peaked around Bloodflowers... Porl put some life back into the group.

@Paul, The Schecter guitars are great guitars, it is the effects that are being used, I have the Ultracure and have owned 3 other Schecters, they sound great, but it depends on his effects which are alot different now. I have put a link here to show the sound of the Schecter Ultracure, this is my song, all of the guitar here is the Ultracure, I am not the best player or mixer, but anyway, I do somewhat miss the old Porl style however, it seems like he plays a long squirrely solo over all of the songs on the new album, and a lot of wah, although Wish had that as well. We all want the perfect line up and that is different to all of us, everyone seems to complain about Jason, but I think he's a fine drummer. I hate the drum heads he uses though, they sound like paint buckets and the pre recorded stuff has to go, but I think that's Roberts idea. anyway in these twilight years of the group I look forward to it all and am thankful I was able to experience a masterpiece like Disintegration the day it came out all those years ago, I dont need another Disintegration, they have already done it, keep going in new directions. I got off on a rant here, sorry......here is the link to my song using the Ultracure

here is another one using only the Ultracure guitar

  60. i think i'd choose porl over roger.

while it was pleasant to think of a possibility of roger coming back, it's definitely very sad to think of porl gone. he has definitely done a wonderful job during the last few years.

i most fear a new addition at this stage in their career. the last thing we need is a guitarist for people to tear apart the way people tear apart jason. unfortunately, perry's name doesn't seem to be floating around at all, so i have no idea who's under consideration - and that's what scares me. :(

to me the dilemma of a lack of keys is very small in comparison to the lack of a guitarist.

    ReplyDelete
  61. In some respects Jason deserves an apology from a lot of his critics (myself included.)
Judging from Entreat Plus, Robert enjoys his drums sounding like a cardboard box. Jason probably has little say in the matter. He was fine on The Swing Tour, everything since has been a bit questionable.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The question is - would Perry actually rejoin? He was fired and replaced. Never mentioned and not missed. In comparison to say, Boris; who is constantly brought up in fan conversations about perfect line-ups, Perry is never spoken about in the same regard. Maybe there is a reason for that.

But I digress, all I know is that if I were Perry, I wouldn't be leaping at the chance to go back. I would find it insulting if as soon as the guy that fired me asked me to return after my replacement left. Especially after Robert spent most of the 4-Tour's interviews singing Porls praises.

    ReplyDelete
  63. he should keep porl and get perry and roger back, 6 PIECE ULTIMATE CURE!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Let's face it Perry was the guitar tech ... his becoming a member of The Cure was essentially a "Forest Gump event".

He could never play to the level of Porl (guitar or keys), and I think Perry would be the first to admit it.

If Porl is not coming back, I doubt that at this stage of his career that Robert would bring on a new guitarist.

    ReplyDelete
  65. he seems very keen to take all the credit - esp when he had diddly to do with the writing ,, seems a bit rum to me..
i like all cure incarnations for what its worth ..and dont really want them to go back n copy themselves ..more change! more flux! please:)

    ReplyDelete
  66. i like porl, but i like perry too.

of course, if i were perry, i would probably not want to come back after being pretty much replaced though.

still.. three piece cure? live? i just don't see that..

    ReplyDelete
  67. Robert wanted to try a different thing without keyboards, hence he had to fire whomever was in charge of that. It was a mistake (to kill the keyboards), now he is somehow regretting it I suppose, as we can see he's using some backing kayboards in DATs here and there.

The same thought about the keyboard player playing something just because he's there applies to Porl (or whomever the guitarist is) and his extremely noisy annoyances when trying to fill the keyboard parts. His first concerts when the keyboards were gone were just awful.

A guitar shouldn't be played when it's not required as well. In some songs, an extra keyboard or an extra guitar makes a difference (to me, Killing an Arab and 100 years were improved with keyboards), but not all the time.

I really wouldn't mind if the keyboards are back, no matter who will be playing them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. About the other members: Perry was not a replacement carefully chosen so to speak. He was what was available at the time for a number of reasons. But he really improved his playing over time, and even not being the guitar hero we all wanted him to be (and I mean real guitar hero, not a game thing), he was quite good in his last days.

It seems that Porl joined in this time in a similar situation as when Perry did. They needed a guitarist that could not only just play the songs but that could add that "extra" (the missing keyboards...) thing to them live, as in studio it's not really necessary, anyone can layer guitar tracks endlessly. And the nearest person available for that with that much instant Cure "knowledge" was Porl, besides the obvious connections between him and Robert.

Being so close to Porl, I guess Robert didn't want to say that it was a very different Porl (musically) this time. My guess is that playing with Page didn't do him good. One thing comes to mind, the Guitar Player interview in 1992. When asked about the guitar feedback, RS said "it's Porl" and to me it didn't sound like a compliment, but more like a complaint. And he quit the band about that time, not much longer after that interview.

And to add the cherry to the cake in the guitar world, we had the Schecters.

As for the drums I'd like any other drummer Cure has ever had over Jason, period. Even Lol, which seems to be still in shape (watch the Levinhurst videos if you're in doubt). Andy was quite a powerful drummer live too. Jason can be a nice guy, but that's not all. Roger is too, and he was fired anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Robert, Simon and Lol together again? The Cure 2011?
(even if i'd like Porl with them)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Going back to someone's "different horses..." comment. To me, 4:13 sounded more like a Cure album (whatever that means) than any since Wish, I attributed that to Porl, if not his playing, maybe his influence on the writing. He definitely brought an energy into the live shows that hadn't been there for awhile.

I think they made the mistake of playing some songs that just NEED keyboards. Close to Me, Kyoto Song, Why Can't I Be You? are a few that come to mind. However, I feel that Inbetween Days, Lullaby, Just Like Heaven worked without keyboards. Maybe that's a testament to the strength being in the songs and not the instrumentation.

Fingers crossed that Porl stays in the group... and if not, maybe "Strange Sensations" should reunite... Robert Plant, half of Portishead and Porl among others...

    ReplyDelete
  71. As much as I love Porl - I do hope this current state of limbo (or 'flux') the band is in, isn't attributed solely to his indecision about staying with the group or not.

If it is just him holding things up, I say leave him. I would rather the guys press on without him/replace him than spend any more time of inactivity. Maybe I'm just impatient though.

    ReplyDelete
  72. J.

I made "...the diff horses..." reference.

I agree with what you're saying especially regarding 4:13 being the most Cure sounding since Wish. (hate the drum machine loops though ...)

Also agree with the notion that they should have simply not performed songs where the keys were irreplaceable, like Why Can't... and a few others. Although I thought the Troubadour performance of Close to Me was absolutely brilliant.

Also on the comment by someone else regarding Porl holding things up. I think you are way off base. Robert is making remixes of CDs (Mixed Up 2), DVDs and performing on others' CDs lately. I think he is busy doing what he is doing and the Porl Flux really isn't holding The Cure back. Let's face it, the fact is Robert IS The Cure; and The Cure will perform or record whenever he wants it to (regardless of other band member availability or 'mood').

    ReplyDelete
  73. Why can't they all just kiss and make up so we can get on with our lives!!!

I need to see The Cure live again, twice is simply not enough
