New version of 'A Few Hours After This'

Update: Here's a better quality upload. Thanks TCDB. And thanks to @weareglitter for the original audio upload. As always, if anyone needs it to be removed, just let me know and it will be gone in a flash.

You can watch the episode on BBC iPlayer and at Amazon (Season 4 Episode 2).

Also, please release this properly. Maybe a digital download for charity?

A new version of 'A Few Hours After This' played during tonight's episode of 'Luther'. Turns out 'Luther' creator Neal Cross is a huge Cure fan, and asked to use the song in the episode, and Robert recorded a new version for him.

Here's the story from The Daily Record:

"The return of Luther also gave Neil a teenage kick when his idol Robert Smith of The Cure provided a song for the soundtrack.

He said: “I have been an obsessive fan of The Cure since I was 13.

“After we had finished shooting the second episode of this special, I phoned the producer and said there is this really obscure Cure track – an extra track on a 12-inch single called A Few Hours After This – which I have always loved and think it would really go.

“Long story short, we contacted Robert Smith and he re-recorded the song. That was one of those moments where I wanted to hijack the Tardis and go back and see my teenage self and say, ‘One day…’" (Thanks @weareglitter)

Boise tickets on sale today

June 2nd, 2016 - Boise, ID at CenturyLink Arena
On sale: Dec. 18th at 10 am Mountain
Ticket link
Tickets range from $25 - $75

Boise seems to be aware of The Cure

From the Idaho Statesman:

Band will perform June 2 at CenturyLink Arena
Fan response exceeded already high expectations
More than half the tickets sold during presale

There was never any doubt that The Cure coming to Boise was a big deal. I knew fans would get excited.

Just not quite this excited. “BAAAABR. IM DYING,” commented a particularly pithy user on the Idaho Statesman’s Facebook page. It was among dozens of freakouts and hundreds of shares that piled up after I blogged about the June 2 concert coming to CenturyLink Arena.

Thousands and thousands of page views later, The Cure was Monday’s most-read article at IdahoStatesman.com. It was nearly twice as popular as the day’s second-place finisher.

At 9:15 a.m., 94.9 FM The River started spinning The Cure songs every 90 minutes. (The British band’s biggest hits are ’80s classics such as “Lovesong,” “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m in Love.”) Program director Tim Johnstone posted Cure videos on his Facebook page.

“My friends are stunned,” Johnstone says. “Stunned.”

So why is it so earth-shattering? Maybe because The Cure has never performed here. At various points an influential part of goth, new wave, alternative rock and other labels eschewed by singer Robert Smith, the group doesn’t tour the United States often. Many Idahoans already had bought tickets for The Cure’s performance June 3 in Salt Lake City — a big deal unto itself.

A relatively miniscule 4,874 seats will be available at CenturyLink. Multiple-night-stands at huge venues in cities such as Los Angeles and New York have sold out in advance.

The public on-sale for Boise is at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18. But a presale 24 hours earlier sold more than half the arena already. That said, don’t fret: Plenty of great seats were held for the public on-sale.

“The excitement level — I knew it would be there,” says Creston Thornton, owner of Eagle promoter CTTouring. “But this is a monster.”

Luring The Cure to Idaho wasn’t easy. Thornton wrote emails that were forwarded to Smith in an effort to sell him on Boise. The process took a month, Thornton says. (Among the points he made: Downtown Boise is hipper than you think. And Depeche Mode, a British band that shares fans with The Cure, sold almost 8,000 tickets here in 1998. (And that was in Nampa, at the Idaho Center.)

The Cure’s sonic calling card is a gloomy yet accessible sound. It’s the sort of era-driven music that jettisons nostalgic Gen-X brains back through time, straight into college dorms, high-school hallways and middle-school cafeterias.

Thornton says he saw The Cure at 16,000-capacity Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre as a teenager in Orange County. It was 1986. Clearly, bringing The Cure to Boise means more to him than just making a buck as a promoter.

“People are fanatical about this band,” he says. “To see people this pumped, it’s really cool.”

Patrik Sandberg: "In praise of Robert Smith"

From i-D:

in praise of robert smith, patron saint of suburban teen goths everywhere

Growing up, writer Patrik Sandberg thought of The Cure's Robert Smith as something like an imaginary friend.

Robert James Smith was born in Blackpool in April of 1959, a little more than twenty-five years before I was. Both of us were raised Catholic and later became atheists. Both of us wore dresses as kids, were beaten by our male peers, were diagnosed with "personality crises" by our school administrators, and suspended for reasons relating to our attitudes toward religion. I never realized any of this until I began to write this essay. We both took piano and guitar lessons as kids, only he was, apparently, better.

When I was twelve, it was announced The Cure would be headlining a Christmas concert for the Bay Area alternative radio station "Live 105." When my parents forbade me to attend, I locked myself in my bedroom and threatened to commit suicide (it didn't help that Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins were also on the bill). I tried to jump out the window, but I couldn't figure out how to get the screen off.

As a gay, goth adolescent in the American suburbs - furious, skeptical, paranoid, isolated - I was drawn to Robert Smith's unfathomable majesty. He was almost like an imaginary friend.

There is a sense of wonder that originates in early childhood-the first time you see a Muppet open its eyes and speak, or when Roger Rabbit walks out of a cartoon and into a live-action world-which is part of the aura and the mystique that Robert has maintained for me forever. He's like Mickey Mouse, if Mickey's romances and nightmares and torturous, self-inflicted eviscerations could cut like a switchblade into your psyche and break your heart with each goofy cartoon antic, making you feel less at odds with the world-or, even better, more at odds but happier for it.

Working in magazines, my job has entailed tracking down hundreds of high-profile subjects. Each time I've reached out to Robert in an effort to coax him into the light, I am reassured with a promise of never. (Morrissey, on the other hand, never goes away and espouses sanctimonious opinions regularly. Perhaps that's why he feels so millennial. Robert seems to exist in another place and time.)

Boise, Idaho show added on June 2nd!

From The Idaho Statesman:

Rock band The Cure to perform Boise concert
Coming to CenturyLink Arena
Selling out months in advance in larger cities
Tickets go on sale Dec. 18 for $25-$75

By Michael Deeds (mdeeds@idahostatesman.com)

It’s going to be “Friday I’m in Love” this week for fans of The Cure.

Known for its often gloomy yet accessible music, the British rock group is coming to CenturyLink Arena — and tickets go on sale Dec 18.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2016. It marks The Cure’s first trip to Boise, despite tens of millions of albums sold and a career that stretches back to the 1970s.

The show is expected to last four hours. First is an opening set from The Twilight Sad. Then comes a three-hour onslaught from The Cure. Recent setlists have featured 40 or more songs, including hits such as “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Just Like Heaven,” “Lovesong” and “Why Can’t I Be You.”

Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday for $25-$75 at 208-331-8497, www.centurylinkarenaboise.com, www.cttouringid.com or at the Centurylink box office. Join a “CTTouring Insiders” list for a Dec. 17 presale by emailing info@cttouringid.com.

Driven by frontman Robert Smith’s gothic imagery and instantly recognizable alt-pop sound, The Cure’s music is an iconic part of ’80s culture. So it’s not entirely surprising that next year’s tour is generating buzz nationwide. Multiple nights at large arenas in Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans and Chicago have sold out in advance.

“Some very cool things and stars had to align to have The Cure play Centurylink Arena with only 4,874 seats available for sale,” says Creston Thornton, owner of promoter CTTouring. “We are very excited to bring this amazing artist to Boise in such an intimate venue.”

How The Cure saved The Twilight Sad

From The List:

Singer James Graham on how the band went from nearly calling it quits to a world tour with the Cure.

It wasn’t that The Twilight Sad wanted to call it quits after the touring cycle for their third album, 2012’s No One Can Ever Know, was over, but they felt that things weren’t progressing and they didn’t know how to fix it. The album had done well critically, but they were still playing to half-full venues. Those around them didn’t seem to share the same enthusiasm the band still had for their music. Other groups – their contemporaries and newer groups without half their experience – were being offered better opportunities.

‘The first time we played the Barrowlands in Glasgow, it was nowhere near sold out,’ remembers singer James Graham of every Scottish band’s rite of passage on the live stage. ‘People who were there said they enjoyed it and so did we, but somehow it felt like a career goal we hadn’t quite achieved.’

And then The Cure happened. Or rather, they had always been happening. Robert Smith and his band were one of the first groups Graham remembers hearing as a child growing up in Kilsyth, and as he got older he became more familiar with their darker side too. ‘They wrote so much that was dark but also some of the best pop songs of all time,’ he says now. ‘It’s not easy to do that, to write a pop hook that everyone identifies with. As a kid I listened to the Disintegration and Faith albums religiously, and on our last tour (supporting Editors across Europe in the autumn) I came back to Disintegration. I listened to it pretty much non-stop, thinking, the guy who sang this also sang one of my songs. Mental.’

Roger's 'Love & Other Tragedies' video now free

From Roger on Facebook: "When I finished the video from the concert of Love and Other Tragedies I tried an experiment that I was pretty sure would fail. I put the video on the new Vimeo on Demand service with a small fee... I think about 7 people paid and I would like to thank those people... Seems art has no value but the real value is in people hearing it so.. I have just posted it to Youtube, you can watch it for free."

"Also from the Vimeo on Demand package the interview I did with Ben talking about the Love and Other Tragedies project before the concert in London, June 26th 2015."

"...and finally to complete the collection, the 99X/10 10 year celebration concert from the evening of Exquisite Tragedy featuring Erin Lang, Hannah Curwood and Quartet Volute. I arranged a selection of songs from the 99X/10 catalogue for string quartet and piano and Erin and Hannah joined us on stage to sing them. An amazing evening."

Roger updates

From Roger on Facebook:

"It's official; we are very pleased to announce that we will be performing two scenes from our new ballet Orpheus and Eurydice at a gala in Moscow on December 15th at the Kremlin Palace. Choreographed by Nikita Dimitrievsky with costumes designed by Irakli. Very, very excited about this, I will be playing on stage with four cellos and piano and Masha Semenyachenko will dance with her partner from the Bolshoi."

Update (11-19-15):

And another new project:

"It took me a while to get over Love and Other Tragedies emotionally and creatively but then I suppose you always need a break after releasing something...

Anyway I'm very excited to announce a new project which is a collaboration with Quartet Voluté and returns to a subject close to me The Crow.

A collection of six pieces of music for piano and string quartet based on Ted Hughes poems.

We're going to record it in December and the aim is to have it choreographed and a film made of the dance. Its nice to be inspired again and I have to thank somebody... they know who they are.
"Up there he cried where black was white, I won" "

How The Cure reshaped goth rock on "Disintegration"

New Record Bin article at Nooga takes a look back at 'Disintegration'. Here's an excerpt:

"Disintegration" was released May 2, 1989, and would forever change the way people looked at and responded to The Cure. Once this record came out, for better or worse, people would gauge this aesthetic by its attention to or delineation from the sounds of this specific album. Whereas their previous few records were steeped in pop distraction, "Disintegration" was a return to the dark, dense sounds of their early '80s work. This was a new chapter in goth rock's storied lineage, and The Cure was determined that the genre would again have the emotional potential that it once had before it became something of a cultural stereotype.

These songs are bottomless, filled with cocooning rhythms and the band's trademark opulence. But there isn't a sense that they were trying to reclaim some of their former glory. They were taking the experiences and inspirations from those earlier records and reconditioning them into a subverting take on the goth rock mentality. And besides being a callback to the sounds of their prior releases, "Disintegration" is arguably the band's greatest accomplishment—it is the sound of a band remembering why they loved making music in the first place.

Read the rest at Nooga.

The Cure - 10 of the Best

Great list from The Guardian:

1. 10.15 Saturday Night
Miserable sorts looking to knock the Cure often crow over how erratic they can be. I can see their point: there certainly aren’t many other bands I can think of that bob so wildly from masterpiece to medicority. They’ve released some of my favourite ever albums – records I wish could be hidden in time capsules so that future citizens of Earth will hear them and hopefully feel the same way they made me feel. And they’ve made others which have been disappointing enough for me to wish Viking-style burials upon; a fleet of fiery CDs drifting in the ocean that can no longer trouble my ears. A tattered copy of Disintegration, a present from my older brother, is one of my prized possessions. On the other hand, my dad gave me a copy of 4.13 Dream shortly before he told me he’d been having an affair and was leaving home; I’m still more resentful about being saddled with 4.13 Dream.

But who cares about consistency? The Cure have always been guided by their restlessness, and it’s led them to many moments of greatness. It also means that, because they’re so changeable, they have more than one way of being brilliant. On their 1979 debut Three Imaginary Boys, for example, they’re still a post-punk band, coming on like Wire with smudged make-up, courtesy of cold, razor-like guitars and poppyish melodies. Opener 10.15 Saturday Night nails the nervy horror of sitting by a phone that never rings, with Robert Smith’s heavy fretting exacerbated by the irritating “drip drip drip drip” of a leaky tap. “I’m wondering where she’s been / And I’m crying for yesterday,” he bellyaches, before he’s drowned out by a needling, nagging riff.

2. A Forest
Smith wasn’t particularly taken with Three Imaginary Boys. The band’s label, Fiction, had the final say on its tracklisting and artwork, and it didn’t sound right either. “I didn’t even like it at the time,” he admitted. “There were criticisms made that it was very lightweight, and I thought they were justified.” Far more interesting was the sound being made by touring partners Siouxsie and the Banshees, for whom Smith would moonlight as a guitarist. But with their second album, Seventeen Seconds, the Cure made their first sprawl into smothering gothic rock. And no track on the album feels more like it’s been cursed by dark magic than A Forest. Smith has since backpedalled on the story that it was inspired by a dream he’d had as a little boy about being lost in the woods, but there is still something about it that feels like a twisted fairy tale: the organ’s ghoulish murmur, the ghostly guitars, the sudden flashes of synthesiser. “Suddenly I stop, but I know it’s too late,” pants a scared-sounding Smith. “I’m lost in a forest, all alone.” You’ll feel just as uneasy as him.

3. The Drowning Man
There has always been a literary bent to the Cure’s work: their controversial debut single Killing an Arab, for example, tapped into Albert Camus’s existentialist novella The Stranger. Smith used his bookcase for inspiration on their brilliantly melancholic third album, Faith, too, this time lifting from Mervyn Peake’s fantasy series Gormenghast. The Drowning Man’s spooky rattle is inspired by the fateful plight of Lady Fuschia Groan, who is devastated to discover that her lover, the sneaky Steerpike, is responsible for killing her father. Overcome with grief, she is perched on a windowsill when a knock on the door startles her into banging her head on the ledge and drowning. The scene is brought to life with one of the Cure’s murkiest scores, all icy splashes of noise and the hiss of snaky guitars as Smith sings her down into the watery depths: “One by one her senses die / The memories fade and leave her eyes.” He pinches and tweaks lines from Peake’s prose, too. “Everything was true / It couldn’t be a story,” he sings at one point, echoing the heartbreaking moment when Fuschia realises the evidence is overwhelming, and her betrothed is a scumbag. The truth doesn’t set her free; it is the beginning of the end.

4. One Hundred Years
Has there ever been a more terrifying start to an album than this? Listen, now, to Pornography’s desolate opener One Hundred Years, and you’ll be convinced that some spectacular storm is brewing. “It doesn’t matter if we all die!” yelps a crazed Smith as black clouds gather above, over dry clattering drums and the shrill howl of guitars. Smith has often referred to Poronography as the first instalment in a trilogy of albums that also includes Disintegration and 2000’s Bloodflowers. It’s a canny idea, but it’s possible, too, to regard it as the finale in some dread triptych that starts with Seventeen Seconds, gathers misanthropic pace with Faith and culminates here, with the Cure at their most magnificently bleak. “Stroking your hair as the patriots are shot!” barks Smith, like he’s being forced to watch gruesome images of violence à la A Clockwork Orange. “Fighting for freedom on television / Sharing the world with slaughtered pigs!” The terror doesn’t stop there, either. “The ribbon tightens around my throat / I open my mouth and my head burst open,” he yells, a rush of noise wailing dementedly behind him, before concluding: “We die one after the other / Over and over.” A song thick with frenzied fear that’s made for the end of days.

5. A Strange Day
Pornography, according to Smith, was supposed to be the “ultimate ‘fuck off’ record”, an album so unremittingly harrowing that the Cure would never be able to follow it. It certainly proved too upsetting for some. Rolling Stone, for example, memorably declared it: “the aural equivalent of a bad toothache. It isn’t the pain that irks, it’s the persistent dullness.” Think of A Strange Day, then, as some hellish hallucination brought on by the gas given to you in the dentist’s chair: the moment when Smith peers far into the future and brings back dreadful tales of the world’s end. It’s a few minutes of eerie calm among the ugly din of Pornography, with its sick, churning synthesiser and sidewinding guitar. But its subtlety doesn’t make it any less scary. In fact, it’s creepier, to hear Smith so disturbingly peaceful about what he’s seen. “Give me your eyes that I might see the blind man kissing my hands,” he sings serenely, making like a feverish Colonel Kurtz. “The sun is humming / My head turns to dust as he plays on his knees.” The horror, the horror.
