New album in 2014?

Terra Colombia posted an article about The Cure playing 'Burn' for the first time, and at the end, they included this (English translation): "A source close to the British band revealed that in the first half of 2014 will give details regarding a new studio release." (Thanks David)

That would be great news! But for now, take it with huge grain of salt. Hell, take it with a silo full of salt.

    2. Exactly! 4:13 was such a mediocre output, I wouldn't want to see a follow up to that.

    4. You have to remember that we got most of the worst songs from the sessions, just like Wild Mood Swings and 2004. I bet that the unreleased songs were way better than a lot of what was on the record.

  3. The new album will be started in 2014, and will then be re-sequenced and re-recorded and the vocals will be redone over the course of the following ten years. Smith will erase everyone's parts and then replace them with whoever is new in the band when the record is finally released. Then we will have the almost new record by The Cure that has nothing to do with the original version.

    4. I just hope that the other side of 4:13 Dream stays as the 2008 version. I would love to hear Porl's parts and the original vocals/versions. However, I am guessing that Smith is going to make it something else, if it ever even comes out, which is quite sad.

  4. In my opinion, dark album or not.
It's all in the bag. It has been for a very long time. They're just needing a label/distributor..

  5. If they can't do a full album hopefully they know we'll take a single, EP, anything. Whatever happened to the days when there was a new album every year and even if there wasn't there was still some sort of new material being released?

  6. Oh man, I want a new record so badly.

Fingers crossed, but there is still no "Reflections". I hope we really don't have to wait another 5 years.

Maybe Robert wants it to be the last one (like, ehm always) and wants to leave with another bang.

    We'll see.

I hope I'm alive a long time after The Cure, there'll be releases for decades.

  10. I am pretty optimistic that a new album will show up next year, and that it will be great. There was a wonderful sense of energy in both concerts I saw this year. This is a band in a creative phase, for sure.

  12. The fact is they play nothing or virtually nothing from WMS, Bloodflowers, The Cure or 4:13 is an indicator of Roberts live quality control (bored as I am with the skeleton of the setlist being unchanged for 20 years now), so one can only hope this translates into songwriting for the next album.

Developing some demo's from Roger and Reeves would be nice, I think Roger still only has a couple of b-sides and the development of Homesick to show for his Cure songwriting career.

What is really needed is for Robert to clearly and definitively set out a theme and feel from the outset, instruct everyone to write to it and then stick to it. They've done the 'wild mood swings' too many times now, pick a theme and keep it. All the best albums have a single sound.

And one last thing: don't try to sound current! They messed up 'The Cure 'with a short-lived numetal obsession, Wendy Time sounded like dated Madchester by the time of Wish, Coming Up was based on Big Beat and is consequently awful. Just be The Cure guys!

    1. Uh-greed. If Robert reads these at all (lol) I'm going to piss him off by saying this: one of the coolest comments I've ever read was when Bono and The Edge were riffing in the studio and The Edge played a guitar line, Bono said 'That sounds too much like U2. Wait a minute, we ARE U2.' They then went on to record All That You Can't Leave Behind, the best late period U2 record. Point is, there's only one The Cure. Just make another Cure album.

      Delete
    2. I remember Robert said the reason they didn't release Burn as a single was because it sounded too much like 'old Cure'. Doh!

    3. Sorry but what you wrote is false and unfair. It sounds like an old bitter Cure fan. Yeah just be the Cure fan, ugh !

    4. david, one of the perks of being a fan of a band is getting to have reasonable discourse about that band. i for one am not bitter, i just don't utterly fall head over heels for every decision, musically or otherwise, that the cure makes. and i'm glad i have a place to discuss that with other fans who may or may not agree with me. they're still easily my favorite band.

    6. Sorry guys, but this sentense 'just be The Cure' made me laugh to death. It's so unrelevant regardind a band whose aim is not to release the same songs, the same sound, the same album again and again and again. And yes The Cure played songs from the last 4 albums and no 'The Cure' and 'WMS' were not fucked up. If you don't see that they contains gems, that the old stuff just make vibrate chords of nostalgia... you should listen 'Pornography' until the end of your life missing one of the most interesting part of the story. I won't.

    7. As a U2 fan, I can say that moment when U2 tried to sound like U2 in the lead up to the 2000s was the worst thing to happen to the band. "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is a terrible in a long line of horribly, unforgivably commercial albums; it has a very few good songs, but mostly rubbish and the lyrics are appalling. In my mind, The Cure hasn't done something so shameless, but that's kinda what Robert's doing on the singles these last 15 to 20 years -- making songs that "sound like The Cure to the mainstream." I think the trick is what the original poster said -- not trying to sound trendy (the percussion on "Anniversary", "Strange Attraction", etc), but also not being afraid to return to the subtleties and vocal restraint shown on "Disintegration" and "Wish" as well as more complex melodies. To quote Pitchfork, while one is hard pressed to find a great melody on recent Cure albums, 'Fascination Street' had, what, 10?"

    8. I think the point is being missed here. Nobody is saying 'just sound like The Cure', they are saying 'just BE The Cure', in other words stop looking at what others are doing and be yourselves. Robert obsessed over Ross Robinson's numetal production and Ross Robinson fucking destroyed what should have been an amazing album.

Surely it doesn't require a genius to see Robert has been lost from time to time. He thinks too much.

I think David you are missing the point that they ARE The Cure. Where The Cure fuck up is on the ocassions they try NOT to be The Cure.

Nobody is saying they want Disintegration part 3. I'd love the 'accoustic guitars with strings' album Robert toyed with (as mentioned in Cure News circa...1995?) that sadly was bastardised into WMS.

The Cure would make an amazing album to fit that bill, but he's too obsessed with either going down the 'we must swing moods' route or, ironically given your stance, trying to sound like The Cure of old.

      Delete
    9. The 2004 album sounds like Robert wanted to sound. He choose the producer, wrote (most of) the music and the lyrics and choose the setlist. If you don't like the record don't blame Ross Robinson. The man made a great job with Vex Red record a beautiful modern dark rock record withouth superheavy bass and awful stuff like Us or Them.

      Delete
    10. Well, Simon has said in at least one interview that The Cure would at least always be able to play the songs from 'The Cure' live, he said something along the lines of the songs themselves are still good - the implication being the album isn't.

But they continue to make production mistakes. The vocals for The Hungry Ghost are awful, Robert screeches the chorus. He can't reach the high notes. Live though he sings the chorus an octave lower, bringing out the beauty in the song.

      Delete
    11. You should run a band and sing and make music. But what you say about 'The Cure', 'The Hungry Ghost' and Robert's singing proves you're wrong. Won't argue anymore as your points sound like a gimmick to me. I wish you to write 'The Cure' and '4:13 Dream' one day, and to make them sound like they do. I'm done with those Robinson and Cooper and 'rhey used to be good´ blahblahblah...

  13. Reeves Gabrels just posted a pic from last night in London with former Bowie drummer Zachary Alford. As pissed as I was to see Porl Thompson leave again. I was so excited to find out Reeves was on the bus. I don't mind Jason Cooper, of course I prefer Boris. Just imagine if the cure booted Jason in favour of Zach!!! The man is an amazing drummer. I would be one happy freak.

  15. i'm hoping that with depeche mode & bowie releasing their best stuff in years, the cure will do likewise. 4:13 could have been a good 8-9 track album, but too many songs & poor production.

the list of 'projects' to come out out is endless... would be nice to get something soon though.

  16. I think that some fans who critique the Cure have every right considering they've followed for years and faithfully bought the records and went to the shows. I think it's a sign of something you truly care about and are invested in. That said, I do agree that the notion of a Cure album in 2014 is as solid as reliable as the message itself being written on a sandy beach. Could it happen? Absolutely, but that's if Robert really wants an album out by then. I certainly would hope so.

  17. I'll take it with a silo grain of salt! Anytime a Cure album is announced add 2-3 years to the stated release date (if it happens at all). God I hope this is true.

  18. i think the cure should come back to fiction records to see some day wish deluxe and reflections, besides they should to works with dave allen to make a good album again. i think the mistakes in "the cure" and "4 13 dream" was the robert 's voice he didn t sing he screamed in every song and that was ugly. i think robert need a deadline to make something good, otherwise the next album will be another disater, why? cos when the cure was in fiction record they had 6 month to deadline and every album was exelent but since the cure has enough time to do something robert change his mind and erase all songs one hundred times. another problem is that robert is making music to bring new teens fans and he had forgotten theirs old fans, i realized that nobody is capable to say to robert what is good and what is bad even his hair is a mess. so i hope robert read every comment here to fix what is wrong..it just my opinion....

  19. He should pay attention to fans, as evidently the people around him don't speak up. Perry was fired after 15 or so years as a member, the longest any non-returning member has served and all because of Robert's dumb reinvention notions. The guy had done no wrong...so clearly no member other than perhaps Simon will ever say 'this is shit' to Robert. I've said it before and I'll say it now, The Cure's artistic and commercial decline coincided with Chris Parry moving on.

  20. no chance. football world cup is ahead. robert and simon have better things to do;-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mmm.. We don't really know that for sure. It's never officially been told what happened between Parry and Smith or if the opportunity ever came up for the handover of Fiction.
I was merely suggesting above that it looked like a logical thing to do as Robert has more than enough knowledge to pass on to fledging artists if he wanted to as a label manager/executive.
As well as the obvious less drama they had with Universal if Fiction was theirs after the Fiction contract ended..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I thought it was common knowledge re Fiction?

Parry sold it to Polydor who wanted a 'cool' label on which to place certain artists. It sounds like he kept it from Robert, who would understandably go apeshit and did by all accounts.

I don't believe Robert's story that when he found out of the sale he immediately drove to London and during the night entered the Fiction office and simply took all the Cure master tapes etc. If they'd been sold as part of the deal he'd have a lawsuit on his hands within 24 hours, bearing in mind The Cure was Fiction's biggest asset at that time.

Fiction is just a name now though, it bears no resemblance to the Fiction that housed The Cure.

  23. I'm fairly certain not. Ian Brown was a Polydor artist who moved onto the 'Fiction' part of the label after his first few albums. The guy referenced on Wikipedia as having resurrected Fiction, Paul Smernicki, just happen's to be Ian Brown's manager.
