Boooooring. I hate tribute albums and covers, it's a waste of time when you can listen to the real thing, which, in the case of The Cure, is always superior. Does anyone actually own a Cure tribute album that they listen to? Every time I hear that 311 cover of Lovesong on the radio I quickly change the channel. Sacrilege!
yeah, i have one called 'fictional' that has all these random german bands. it's really dark and cool. and i love the 'rock a bye baby' cure lullaby covers. good stuff.
There'a a german dark wave band called The Fair Sex (always have been better the Alien Sex Fiend ;) ) that have an awesome cover of The Walk on this tribute.
i also have another one called 'give me the cure' that has a cover of friday i'm in love by some band called glowworm that's great. completely emotionless female voices singing it.
So, they'll talk about a Cure tribute album, but not the records being broken (I'm guessing) for top single sales without airplay. I'm going to have to have a talk with Paul Thomas (or whatever his name is) of Pitchfork media news.
My recommendation: 100 Tears. Razed in Black's cover of Disintegration is awesome, and I even had a chance to see and hear them perform it live back in Summer 1999, when they opened for Switchblade Symphony.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! I don't have any tribute CD's besides the rock a bye baby lullaby's but a few of the one's you mentioned might be interesting to listen to.
i love the dismemberment plan's version of 'close to me'
as for this album- from the songs i heard on the myspace page i HATED the bat for lashes cover of 'a forest' and i HATED whoever did 'the hanging garden'
i didnt mind devastations and veil veil vanish's cover of 'the upstairs room' (if only because it's so damn close to the original anyhow.)
i LIKED sarabeth tucek's cover of 'three imaginary boys'. sitar. rather dark and hypnotizing
and against all better judgment i got a kick out of we are the world's 'why can't i be you' it's like insane baby music. not good, just...interesting.
obviously all the musicians think robert smith is insane. which is what i've always thought of him as well...
Ok I listened to the songs on myspace & they are not bad. Maybe I might get it for the hell of it. Quite different than the originals but a decent effort by all.
And I just love the album cover with the kitties! Kitty's Rule!!! LOL!!!
Wondering if we all could come up with a list of artists and songs for a "real" tribute album, what would it be?
Iggy Pop - Lulliby Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Boys Don't Cry Depeche Mode - Plainsong Duran Duran - Lovesong Feist - Just Like Heaven GoldFrapp - Pictures of You Jimmy Buffett - Disintegration Morrisey - Mr. Pink Eyes
Most covers are average at best. But if it results in people becoming more aware of said band as can be the case then at least that can be taken as a positive. I remember seeing The Editors perform 'Lullaby' which was nice.
i too love those piano covers. i imagine a cure version of 'the only one' where the tempo is very slow, like in the piano version, with robert singing softly. i think that would be great.
Wow, that is a pretty version of "The Only One". Sounds so sweet and innocent - from this arrangement, you'd never guess what the songs lyrics were about! ;)
WOW. IT SOUNDS REALLY FUCKING GOOD! Probably the best Cure tribute album I've heard. And I know some of the bands quite well, I've been friends with them on Myspace for a while! Ahhh!
I quite like to spin that string quartet tribute thing every now and then. People who usually poo-poo The Cure always end up saying "hey this is really good, what is it, it sounds familiar"!!

ReplyDeleteThis is actually a good tribute record. Moonspell has done a quite good cover of Apart.

ReplyDeleteHmmm, you guys give me pause to think, I'll check out some of your recommendations!

ReplyDeletepitchfork doesn't track sales charts, it's mostly a review site for indie bands.

ReplyDeleteewww.. pitchfork.
ReplyDeletei dont like covers much, why spend money on those albums when you can buy other cure stuff?
though the tori amos lovesong cover is lovely.

ReplyDeleteNot bad

I love the Whisper String Quartet album of Cure covers.
ReplyDeleteWondering if we all could come up with a list of artists and songs for a "real" tribute album, what would it be?
ReplyDeleteIggy Pop - Lulliby
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Boys Don't Cry
Depeche Mode - Plainsong
Duran Duran - Lovesong
Feist - Just Like Heaven
GoldFrapp - Pictures of You
Jimmy Buffett - Disintegration
Morrisey - Mr. Pink Eyes
A better list?
Oh and almost forgot
ReplyDeleteNIN - Do the Hansa
Bauhaus - Catch
One of the best Cure covers I've heard, but then again I really love Bat for Lashes

ReplyDeleteYes, Whisper is kinda neat.
ReplyDeletenot too bad. of the earlier covers i really dig the leather strip cover of lullaby and the dinosaur jr's jlh.
ReplyDeleteThose piano covers you posted DJ are amazing. The Only One cover really suprised me.
ReplyDeleteThe review at Pitchfork says she's playing an autoharp, but I tend to think it's actually a hammered dulcimer.
ReplyDeleteIn case anyone ELSE was as tripped up when they pushed play and heard something decidedly not-an-autoharp.
I also had pleasant memories of that guy who did all the acoustic covers of the songs on Disintegration. Which were endearing.

ReplyDeleteThe piano cover of the Only One is so pretty, I love listening to it! Now I want to do a Cure wedding where they play that!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is a pretty version of "The Only One". Sounds so sweet and innocent - from this arrangement, you'd never guess what the songs lyrics were about! ;)
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing V! :p
ReplyDeleteIf someone sang over the piano Only One cover it would ruin it. Piano Porn just isn't nice.
ReplyDeletePlease, Crqig, new post, new post!

ReplyDeleteThe tracklisting and a brief article is up now in NME.COM...I am personally very much looking forward to The Dandy Warhols's version of Primary.....
ReplyDeleteCraig doesn't appear to be interested in posting the news item that I sent to him. :(
