Reeves Gabrels joins The Cure for the Summer

Welcome to The Cure, Reeves! Good time to take a listen to Yesterday's Gone again. Beautiful!

From Slicing Up Eyeballs: "While Smith has not made an official announcement regarding Gabrels’ addition to the lineup — and generally hasn’t announced lineup changes in recent years — musician Jenn Vix, who released a song with Gabrels earlier this year, tells Slicing Up Eyeballs that Gabrels is “an official band member now” and will play all of The Cure’s summer festival dates."
Update: Robert says Reeves is "just filling in", he's not a member of the band.

From Jenn Vix on Facebook: "For all my friends who have been wondering where I have disappeared to for the last few weeks... I am playing guitar with The Cure. We will be doing festivals throughout Europe this summer." -- Reeves Gabrels

    2. That would be awesome. Yesterday's Gone is still on high rotation on my iPhone.

  3. Not quite sure how I feel about this. He is an amazing guitarist no question, but i don't think he really fits in. But I still have my doubts this is actually true anyway, the only thing official is what comes out of Roberts mouth.

    1. Good luck on waiting for Robert to say anything. No announcement about Porl leaving, no announcement about Roger rejoining, now let's see if he has anything to say about Reeves.

Pretty sure he's here for the Summer. From there, it's anyone's guess.

  6. Awesome news! Now when do we get a new album?

  7. Finally, we have a second guitar! I knew I have been listening to Ulyesses a lot lately for some reason, ha. I welcome him along, such a great addition!

  9. Very, very interesting move but I do feel sorry for Perry.

  10. Fantastic news!! Is this the first non-brit to be an official Cure?

    1. Oh, hadn't thought of that! I suppose he is. Let's hope letting an American in doesn't mess it all up or cause too much trouble. : )

    2. Good call on that, wow I've always wondered what would be like to have an American in this band. It also seems like someone needs to update his Wikipedia page.

  11. American, born in 1956, with Bowie from "Tin Machine" to "Hours". He's probably not a Cure member in the sense that we could think. But will do the whole season, I'm pretty sure. And if they enjoy together, they may record an album, why not.

  12. This is a dream come true. He's the only person who could begin to fill Porl's shoes.

To all the doubters, I suggest you check out Bowie's Outside lp.

Orr.. Check out the 1997 boots from the shows he sat in on during te Xmas festival circuit.

  13. I still prefer Perry but it could be worse...

  14. It's great news that Reeves is in for all the summer tours, hopefully he will remain a band member for longer than that and this line up will make it into the studio.
Bowie credited Reeves with dragging him out of his career nadir in the late 80's and although I am no way suggesting that The Cure had slipped into a similar state, there is no doubt that Reeves is very much his own man and won't be slow to voice his opinion and perhaps encourage the band to try some new things.
His work on the Outside/Earthling tours with Bowie in the mid 90's was simply outstanding.
I think his addition to The Cure is the best thing to happen to them for a long, long time. Am looking forward to the next move, always wanting more........

  15. Reeves did drop 2 hints on his facebook page over the last 2 weeks :)

  16. Great, an American faux-Hendrix widdler that looks like Reg Holdsworth. Just what The Cure need. This is all about Smith's obsession with Bowie.

  17. Wow, I'm actually quite hyped about this.. Even if it is just for the summer festivals, which is still anybody's guess.. I think thesmudge sums up how I feel best!

My head's still spinning that this has happened - wake up this morning and 'Oh yeah, Reeves is now an official Cure'

    The Drowning Man indeed!!

  18. Don't know how much he adds to be honest. Wrong Number just included a lot of guitar w*nkery and heavier songs such as One Hundred Years and Disintegration limped more than lunged. Good to see Bananafishbones, but I still don't see this set to be much different to what they have been playing for years now.

  19. Sorry but the amount of "faux-Hendrix" and "guitar wankery" from Reeves is miniscule in comparison to what Porl was doing, especially after he re-joined, but somehow it was okay because it was Porl? The only times where there was anything flashy coming from him was when it was in the songs in the first place, like Wrong Number or Want, the rest of the time he was surprisingly (and very effectively) subtle I think. Thank god he didn't just solo through the whole of Doing The Unstuck like a certain previous guitarist used to do...

    1. Well actually I agree. I like Porl but not on the last tour he did. He just made a random racket over the top of the songs. As for RG being subtle..more like virtually inaudible for 90% of the show..at least on the live feed I watched. We'll see how he develops I guess as the tour progresses. Anyway forget guitars..Roger totally stole the show afaic..both in energy and pure musicianship....

  20. Official word is that Reeves is just a guest, not an official member of the band.

    1. Nooooooooooooooooooo. That's a real shame. Just playing these summer festivals dates you think?

    2. Sounds like it. But we'll see. Just had to correct the title of this post. Told he's a guest, not a member.

    3. Think Reeves still does have his own band, but not sure? Perhaps a short term agreement that suits both parties? Still hoping for a more permanent move though, really do think Reeves could bring a lot to any studio recordings.

    4. It was an email this morning, but Robert has now said it in the interview from Nederland TV. Says Reeves is "just filling in".

  21. Yes, my first thought upon hearing the news yesterday was that Reeves is American. :)

  22. Hmm, slightly disappointing to hear he's just a guest, but not entirely surprising. At least we can look forward to a great festival season, and who knows what might happen afterward?

  23. only for the summer that ok for me! maybe perry come back after the summer or a order guitar player:)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, this is great but I still want Porl or Perry...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think it's safe to say that neither Perry nor Porl will ever return to the band. Too many bridges have been burned for that. So if The Cure is to have a second guitarist, it has to be somebody from outside. Reeves seems to be a great choice, even if it is only temporary for now. More importantly, this also seems to be an acknowledgement from Robert that The Cure works best as a five-piece.

    1. Can someone tell me why perry isn't in the band anymore? I so wish he was back...The cure is so much better as a 5 piece and to have Perry as a 2nd guitarist and extra keyboards would be a bonus.... I just find that Reeves fits in with the band...but he is better than nothing!!!

    2. Sorry I mean't that I find Reeves doesn't fit in with the band

    3. co-sign.

ronleblanc, i don't believe much has been said about teddy leaving the band. maybe robert was feeling fire-happy. not sure. he has his own projects now anyway...

  26. One thing I was wondering though is why Jeremy isn’t taking Porls place? He is an amazing guitarist who knows ALL their music and has a passion for it. He totally respects and knows the sound that make The Cure THE CURE! Just throwing it out there.

  27. Can someone post the link to Robert's announcing he's a guest? I sense that Reeves is a guest much in the way Roger is a guest, as he was never officially announced either.

    1. It was an email this morning, but Robert has now said it in the interview from Nederland TV. Says Reeves is "just filling in". That doesn't mean that things couldn't change, if both sides really enjoy it, and want to work together, but for now, he's just along for the Summer shows.

  28. I'm reminded of analogy that someone made here once before - The Cure are like a sports team, there are a lot of players on the bench, and they will get the call up when the moment is right.... the right player for the right show.

  29. Would be cool if Porl or Perry were back in the band but I do not see it happening either. GR sounded great in the videos so far, will have to see how the summer shows go but I think he's a decent choice. Whether he will do anything with the Cure beyond the summer, only time will tell but it will be interesting to see what happens in the future! Let's enjoy the summer shows for now!

  30. Wasn't sure what to make of Reeves coming into the Cure, but since a little more info has come to light (i.e, he is guesting) I'll give my two cents worth....

    - the negative out of the way first. Reeves has defintely "aged" the band. there, I said it... I would guess that Reeves, Robert, Simon & Roger are all similar in age (Jason may be a little bit younger), but the band has appeared to have seemed ageless until now. This is all superficial, by the way.... :)

    - I like the concept of a guest player, and whilst I am largely unfimiliar with his work, it seems Reeves is one of the few capable of pulling it off. I can't say "Wrong Number" is one of my favourite Cure moments, but I can appreciate they were going for something different at the time. As long as Reeves is true to the Cure sound, it shouldn't be an issue... and those Reverend guitars are cool :)

    - Would love to know what happened with Perry, as it seems that door is forever closed. From what interviews I've seen with him (Trilogy dvd etc) he seemed a very mellow guy who was loyal and true to the ideals of the band and what it represented. Also, the fact that he could cover guitar and keys was an added bonus.

    - the band sounds great with this lineup. The songs now sound complete, without some of the missing riffs etc that has hampered some of the 4 piece lineups since 2005. The Cure works best as a 5 piece - no question!!!

    1. It's true that Reeves has officially brought grey hair into the band, but then he is a few years older than the others. It also means he is the only one in the band who's not dyeing his hair anymore. ;)

  31. This is a similar case when Roger returned to the cure.He was just a guest for the Reflections shows.I know Roger is a different kind of story cos He's spent almost his entire life in The Cure but He could not say anything about a return un til Robert told him to stay before Bestival.I am not telling that Grabrels is gonna stay for sure but if both parts enjoy this summer playing together I would bet some euros (not many ;))he will be a permanent member. In fact it would be the first time since 1984 that someone plays with the band and leave it afterwards.
