Surprise! Cure in the studio!

Eden Gallup posted this yesterday on Facebook: "In the studio with the cure. Great to hear them playing again ! Surprises!" (Thanks Gildas)

Update: Clive makes an excellent point in the comments. Eden said they were "in the studio", but didn't say a recording studio. He could have just meant a rehearsal studio. So no confirmation of any actual recording going on right now. Sorry for jumping the gun on that.

Update 2: Not recording according to Eden's latest update: "To clear up some confusion, the cure were not recording anything new last week, just dusting of and getting together for 2011, looking forward etca"

Update 3: Received further confirmation on this. It was just a session to get together and play again, to try things out, so that future plans could be made.

  7. Im so excited !

The best new of the year...by far !

I wonder, are they removing the dust out or recording new material?

I hope both will be reality soon.

For me, whatever it comes out, will be good.

    What´s your thoughts about this?

I want to know further !!!

I hope that Robert gets bitten by the "WANTS TO ENTERTAIN" bug and starts itching to do more shows this year! :)

  16. I'm guessing this is Simon Gallup's son? Great to hear. I just desperately hope Robert doesn't mess up the production by trying to make it too compressed or hip. Ruined "The Hungry Ghost" with all that extra percussion and the chorus was unbearable. Even the guitar solo on "Bloodflowers" was too loud.

Let's get back to the clear, powerful, yet sutble "Disintegration" production!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Muldfeld We can only hope KU isn’t a part of this studio time!

RAW RSX VOICE, PLEASE & THANK YOU!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. JPX - Hahaha...I was worried about you, man. Glad you were able to bounce back so quickly. : )

    ReplyDelete
  19. Richard - I don't know if Boris is one of the surprises that Eden mentioned, but Roger has confirmed that he's not in the studio with them, so we can stop that rumor dead in its tracks.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Muldfeld - Let's enjoy this great news for at least a few days before we start complaining about stuff. : ) The Cure are back together again, playing, and possibly working on recording something. Time to celebrate! Look, even JPX is excited! : )

    ReplyDelete
  21. Who cares who's with them right now? This is awesome news. Eden hanging around watching means Simon is there at least (can probably assume Robert too hehe).

For 99% of other bands some kind of official annoucement should be going up pretty quick. Don't expect one from our boys though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. => Oh God, let it be true!!! I can't wait for a new album and new shows!
Robert, you know you and The Cure are always loved in Italy! ♥

  23. Maybe Porl left the band? THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!!! :-P

  24. Maybe Porl is back! THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!!!

  25. Craig, I never doubted The Cure were getting back into the studio, given that Robert announced few dates this year. I actually assumed The Cure had already recorded their follow-up long ago, but were just rerecording bits or biding its time. So, I'm always happy to get another Cure record! Thanks for keeping up with news and keeping us updated!

Glad I'm not the only one, KelBel. Why is Robert Smith often abbreviated as "RSX"? I didn't know Keith Uddin was the problem; I remember when I messaged The Cure on myspace about the supposed edits of "Shake Dog Shake" on "The Top", I received a reply telling me to send any such evidence to an email address with the name Keith Uddin in it. I just thought he was Robert's assistant on all things, including the remasters.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @muldfeld: Robert signed his posts on the official website as RSX, that's why.
KU was a producer of their last album and then later Robert's guitar tech on the 4Tour.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Would be great to hear some new material, having seen Mogwai last night - I'd really love an album of doom & gloom.

4:13 could have been really great had it left off a couple of the singles and This Here & Now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This can only be good news! Look forward to hearing who is playing what is being played... Is Roger busy? :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sorry, don't know anything about facebook, but should this comment be taken as feedback from Eden? (just copied from the comments bit on the original post...)

  31. Great news! Hopefully the Dark record is coming to fruition.

    Double great, NO Roger!

    Hopefully Porl is back.

    Boris would be nice too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I know if I hold my breath waiting I'll suffocate so I'll just grin & hope they get something out before the decade fades. I guess this explains why Bob was so definite about not announcing any more shows.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't mind Porl when Robert keeps him on a tight leash. When he is let off the leash like on Wish and 4:13, he pees and poops all over everything. It ruins the dynamics.

Also The Cure without keyboards is stupid...seriously. Every record from 17 Seconds and all the corresponding tours have had keyboards until now. The songs sound awful and it doesn't really matter what songs they play because they are all missing that certain something.

I have seen them play on all the tours since 1986 and then saw them play all the shows between Red Rocks and San Diego (sans San Jose...saw Swervedriver in Portland instead) and those 8 shows were the worst 8 Cure shows I have seen. Even worse than the Home Depot Center Curiosa show and the Coachella 2004 show. Which is funny because those are the two prior so that means the last 10 are the worst 10...out of 33.

The sound on the re-masters has been questionable. Entreat plus is unlistenable. There are now no keyboard on the records or the tours. Is RSX practicing some sonic revisionist history?

    ReplyDelete
  34. namepa

Why do you assume that NO Roger means NO keys? RS has stated he plays the keys on most recordings anyway.

Personally, I like the "sonic" Cure. Although I see no reason why Porl is not "asked" to play keys on stage for some songs ... he did it in The Day (somebody had to cover up for Lol).

What I don't like are the drum loops that have become a mainstay. Just simply annoying, especially when listening on headphones.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree (and I think Robert would too) that Coachella 2004 was a low point. But the by the end of the 4:13 tour, the band was at its live pinnacle. There has not been a stronger combination to share a stage from a performance element. The keys aren't necessary when Porl's in the mix. The keys/tapes had been getting more and more ridiculous for the past couple tours to try and cover up the deficiencies of the *ahem* weaker lineup.

If you want to hear the cds, you can enjoy them at home. Watching the band mime to them is not most people's idea of a good night out.

  37. Though not quite as consistent as "Disintegration", "Wish" is my favorite Cure album for its climactic high points. I LOVE it.

I assume and hope Porl is still in the band, unless Robert says otherwise publicly. I would like a keyboardist. Interestingly, Andy Anderson's interview shed some interesting light on why an early keyboardist left -- because the parts were too simple. I think that's why I didn't like a lot of Roger O'Donnell's work, especially live. Understandably Roger wanted to be more expressive keyboard-wise, but all those flourishes hurt some of the songs; the keyboard settings on the "Disintegration" set for "Trilogy" come to mind. However, I must say I LOVE "Homesick"; brilliant track.

In any case, having a real keyboard specialist may not be possible for The Cure because that player will want to create more complex melodies, etc. Perry or Porl or Robert always have guitar parts, too, so they were perfect for the role.

I'd love more keyboard, but I really want Robert to work on creating more poetic lyrics that don't rhyme.

I also want "In Orange" on DVD because I lost my used VHS copy a couple of years ago!

  41. I'd enjoy a ten-track album every year like it used to happen between '79-85', whatever the music, the lyrics, the production... I enjoy them all today each the way they sound, and I suppose i'll enjoy whatever comes out these days (the more and more often the better) in 10/20/30 years...

    ReplyDelete
  42. i hope Porl is still in the band. he he brings so much energy and his ability to improvise make their concerts even better. that had been lacking for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  43. muldfeld:

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the keyboard issue:

"In any case, having a real keyboard specialist may not be possible for The Cure because that player will want to create more complex melodies, etc. Perry or Porl or Robert always have guitar parts, too, so they were perfect for the role."

A full time key guy wants to fill all the parts of a song with nifty key parts. This is just not The Cure sound at its best. The Cure use simple key parts that are, as you say, boring for an accomplished key player. To me, the optimal live compromise is to have Porl play key bits on the songs that have important key parts. Although IMO some songs have really benefited from having the keys removed - Fascination Street, Disintegration, At Night, etc.

The last Cure lineup was close to the best ever ... if Boris was back ... that 4 would be the ultimate lineup IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Apologies if this has been noted already, but has anyone checked out The Cure's wikipedia page? Not only does it mention a "fourteenth album," but there is also mention of an additional "itunes exclusive album" in the works. Has anyone else heard about this?

    ReplyDelete
  45. since when was Wish ever a fucking let-down? i feel like i'm on another planet!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I suspect, if true, the iTunes only might be Mixed Up II. So many remixes post-Mixed Up, it would be a lot of tracks. But I have nothing but a guess on that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Excitement Deflates"....I was holding on to that faint glimmer of hope that Mr. Smith had been shot in the head by the magic sunbeam of inspiration, and in an unbridled moment of enthusiastic verve and vigor, was preparing to unleash upon the world, not one, but TWO albums of apocalyptic greatness that would inadvertently bring about the end of the world as we know it due to their sheer awesomeness.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hello there, I'm a long time reader, but this is my first post. I'm just wondering why there is an assumption that the band is recording. The facebook post states that they are in a studio...it could just be a rehearsal studio...

Just curious...perhaps I missed something. Best wishes to you all.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You know "Studio" can also mean rehearsal studio.

    Just sayin

    ReplyDelete
  50. Clive - Hello! And welcome! You make an excellent point. I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was a recording studio because it seemed much too early to be rehearsing for the September show. But I guess there's always the chance that they might be playing much earlier than that, which might be even better news to some.

notherbob and Hannah - Hope you guys saved me a few Tim Tams and Tagalongs while I was gone. Trade you some Mardi Gras king cake for some : )

Oh, and as you can see from Eden's latest post, his "world tour with The Cure" post was not a hint or announcement, just wishful thinking. That's something we've all been guilty of lately. : )

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you for the kind welcome Craig...as I say, I've been a long time visitor to your site (and a Cure fan since 1984...yes, I am an old man). You really ought to be commended for your effort and passion Craig...the Cure are indeed a worthy subject of such a labour of love, but it has to be said that you go above and beyond the call of duty! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. HFoM - Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, and they can add whatever they like, so never trust it completely, but the iTunes exclusive album is something that Robert has mentioned a few times over the last year or so. Only guesses as to what it could be, since he's never said what it will be.

Sofia - I have to plead guilty to feeling Wish was a serious let-down after Disintegration. Loved a lot of the songs, but as a whole, nowhere near what I was expecting from a followup to the greatest album ever. But as you know, I really like Bloodflowers, so my thoughts and opinions are quite suspect. : )

And while everyone is casting their votes for best Cure lineup, for me, this isn't even close....Robert, Simon, Boris, Porl and Roger on the Prayer Tour. Without question, the best live band I've ever seen.

And for you keyboard haters, just because Roger isn't back, doesn't mean no keyboards. Remember, Robert himself said that there would be more keyboards on the "dark album" than there were on 4:13. And Robert never lies, right? : )

    ReplyDelete
  53. I hadn't posted about this at all either but I had assumed it might be a rehearsal too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My first thoughts are they're recording the pre-recorded backing tracks for the upcoming live show ;-)

The possibility of the original 8 track mix of Entreat being remastered and being made available for download was mentioned around the very same time the iTunes album was first.
I've always believed that's what it is...

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm going to assume they're in the rehersal studio. From what I've heard, Geffen is not happy with how poorly 4:13 did, so I can't imagine them being in any rush to front the band the money to release anything new, at least not for awhile. A compilation album will probably be the bands next move.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Unless they've re-signed with them, Geffen doesn't have anything to do with The Cure any more. Robert ended that contract more than a year ago.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Robert, pick up the phone and CALL ROGER!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. It was Geffens fault 4:13 bombed. If The Cure release a new album, it's always best to inform people, i.e promote it!!

Rehersal or Recording? Doesn't matter as long as the gears are turning once more.

  65. The Cure are featured quite prominently on the Fiction website. Does that have to do with licensing? I thought Fiction sold it's catalog to Universal in '02 or '03. Or did Chris Parry just sell Fiction itself? I hate that mooks in suits dictate so much these days. Really wish the Cure would go the NIN, Radiohead, Beck route and just do it themselves. They get a bigger cut of the pie, and, given the numbers, I doubt the sales would go down. Hell, it seems that nostalgia in the online music press drove the sales of Disintegration Deluxe. But it would mean Robert taking on roles he's said he's not interested in.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Not to beat a dead horse, but I entered my Cure fandom with "Wish" and then worked my way backward through Disintegration and the rest of the albums. For years I liked Wish better than Disintegration and some days I still do. It's a matter of mood...Sometimes you're just in the mood for grand pop gems. Also, some other things to think about that elevate Wish...
    a) Great stage show, lighting, and the ART...wonderful
    b) Best opening tape and track... the drums and screeching on "TAPE" are chilling...
    c) Fantastic lyrics...
    d) layers and layers of guitars. It's the same approach as Disintegration - beautiful layers - but with guitars instead of keys ans such...
e)Wish sets the standard for the songs Robert unfortunately keeps re-writing--- "Only One" = "High"; alt.end = "End"; "This Here and Now" = "Doing the Unstuck" etc.

For me, Wish is certainly not a letdown. Think of it this way - if WMS had come directly after Disintegration - THAT would have been a letdown...

    ReplyDelete

  68. I think "alt.end" owes more to "in your house" than anything else, and "doing the unstuck" is about the last thing "this here and now with you" reminds me of, but wish really is a fantastic rock album. The inclusion of a few b-sides would undoubtedly make it more appealing.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Halo 18,
When I was comparing the songs, I meant mostly the lyrics, not necessarily the sounds... although The Only One pretty much is a shameless copy of High.

alt.end is that familiar RS sentiment of "this is the end, I'm quitting..." just not a very good song...

and Doing the Unstuck is and This Here and Now are lyrically about living in the moment... (which the singer/persona/RS is attempting to do...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Anna - Nice! : ) Hope you got to hear that live on the latest tour. I'm so upset about Dave Pajo leaving. Thought he was an excellent addition.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The question on everyone's lips is: What was with the "Surprises" comment at the end of Ed's FB status then if they're not in the studio to 'record'?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Maybe the "surprise" were what they were playing? Or who was playing?

    ReplyDelete
  73. My guess is there will be new songs thrown in with the Bestival set..

    ReplyDelete
  74. Robert usually puts an 'End' style track on every album...well since Wish anyway...In fact Bloodflowers is almost entirely made up of songs which lyrically read like him throwing in the towel (maybe someday, 39 etc)

And Wish is my favorite Cure album by the way, only because it covers all of the bases of what The Cure had done, and what they would go onto do. It was somehow a summary, but also a foreshadowing.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Maybe the "surprise" were what they were playing? Or who was playing?

.... "suprises" wasn't it? urm Roger and Boris ;)

    ReplyDelete
  76. John - No, already confirmed with Roger that he wasn't there. And from what I've heard, no Boris.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi Craig, much like Colin further up on this post, I am a long time reader and first time poster. Wondered if you had heard if Porl was at this session, as - (without getting into the whole keyboards thing) I think his guitar playing on the last few tours added so much to the band, would really miss him if he was no longer in the group.

    ReplyDelete
  78. You have heard a lot of confirmations on who is not there...so maybe you have heard about who is there? :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hey Colin, welcome aboard! : ) I wish I could help with that, but I don't think the band want those details posted. If they do, I'm sure Robert will say something about it.
Sorry I can't help with that right now, but answers should be coming soon.

    ReplyDelete
  80. TheSmudge - Sorry! I mistakenly called you Colin. I meant to say, Welcome aboard, TheSmudge! : )

    ReplyDelete
  81. Andrea - Yes, but as I said to TheSmudge, I think if it was okay to say anything about who was at the session, Eden would have mentioned it in his post or answered the questions.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Totally understand Craig! Thought I'd try. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. No problem, Andrea. We just have to hope Robert will stop being so shy and post an official update soon. : )

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  85. Sorry for the false hope, JPX. But at least things are moving forward again. Let them shake the rust off, and get the creative process rolling again, and it won't be too much longer before we hear something new.

  89. This Twilight Garden makes me woozy, I love that one.

  90. to all "wish" experts:
I think "wendy time" is better at the "play out" VHS. would love to see that version on it. Can´t explain why, but I am always listen to "wish" when visiting my parents place. It´s still in my old tape recorder there. When I recall all this years, oh my god, we got so old already. All the way with "The Cure"...

    ReplyDelete
  91. melt05 - Totally agree. I like the "Play Out" versions of Wendy Time and The Big Hand better than the versions we got on the album/single.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Craig

The slow version of "Cut" on Play Out is absolutely incredible. It's too bad they "Psychedelic'd" it up for Wish ... It would have been one of my favorite Cure songs as performed at the T n'C.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Oh yeah! Forgot about Cut/Away. Loved that version! Still like the album version a lot, but the T&C version is great!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Craig you are right – all this T+C Club versions are so damn good. Never understood why "Wendy Time" got so upbeat at last. I don´t think its gonna happen, but a "Wish" remaster with another tracklist, like for example TeessidePETE suggests would be fun. But please keep "Doing the unstuck" on it.
