Rumor: Cure to play Guadalajara, Mexico?

This was posted yesterday in the Mexican newspaper "Mural". It says The Cure will play in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011. Here's what Google translates it to: "Choose city - This 2011 looks to be another great year of concerts in GDL as The Cure, Cyndi Lauper and Motley Crue would be here." Obviously, this is not confirmed in any way, but it certainly is intriguing. Still, as of today, the only place you can see The Cure live in 2011 is at Bestival. (Thanks Jose)

  1. Mexico makes sense, they are very popular there... it will be interesting to see what the 2011 cure "are"...

  2. I would dismiss immediately this rumour as untrue and maybe think of it as a mistake but then again you have Robert's picture there, and you remember a few months back when he hinted for possible dates in South America for this year? Maybe dreams come true.

  3. yeah, the only reason i do see truth in this is that fact that robert hinted at south america. of course, mexico isn't south america, but it's close.

  4. unrelated but funny nonetheless...

Crawley, who defeated League Two Torquay 1-0 on Saturday to become only the sixth non-league side ever to advance to the last 16, will travel to Old Trafford for the standout fixture of the fifth round.

The tiny Sussex club have already accounted for Championship strugglers Derby and League One side Swindon, and manager Steve Evans refused to rule out another upset.

  6. Maybe during this long break Roger will be asked back in again to play keyboards. He's been missed.

  7. It would be great but why not Mexico city! When they played here a few years ago it was a complete success! I really hope they come anyways, if they do so, I will be there for sure ;)

    Thanks for the news!

  8. Who exactly are The Cure now. I thought Porl had left (i hope not)? Surely Robert, Simon and Jason cannot tackle these huge events on their own. i agree with Mark. It would be great to see Roger back!!!

  9. Robert Simon and Jason could certainly tackle the events if they did a TIB/17 Seconds/Faith setlist.

There's not a new album to promote, so why not?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON!!!

I guess i just long for my old perfect Cure line up of the Prayer Tour era. Saying that the 2005 Yahoo session version of 'M' played with the above line up is amazing. I just miss keys on Plainsong etc. Whatever the line-up The Cure will always be fantastic.

  12. @drowningman i'm hoping the fact that they booked bestival means maybe porl's back?

  13. They were a 3-piece for Live 8 and they pulled that off, didn't they??

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nope. Paul had rejoined before that. That was his 1st show back with them.

  15. OMG!! You're so right.. How could I have forgotten that?!?? That was the the night of my second child's birth and I saw the show via live stream.. O_o

  16. I can't really imagine them playing such a restricted set especially at Festivals. Wouldn't they have to cut out a huge number of their most popular hits? As festivals attract a large number of casual fans, it seems silly to perform a set only a minority of the audience will appreciate.

  17. The new and improved politically correct Robert will probably play a song renamed "Fire In Cardiff"

  18. Wait a minute - Porl left? Is this rumor or official? Too bad - the 4Tour was brilliant, because of him!

    ReplyDelete
  19. @jason

rumor but official via craig, but that was a year ago or something and nobody's got a clue what's up now. nothing ever officially announced.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @mehrlicht hahaha, with all that drama in egypt we're about due to take the word cairo out of the song soon.

    ReplyDelete
  21. They'll have to re-release Three Imaginary Boys without Fire in Cairo, for sure.
With time, we might even get an entire album of cuts.

  22. Jason - As Lindsey said, it's unofficially official. Robert has never posted about it publicly, other than the cryptic "flux" comments last year, but it did happen sometime in 2009. 100% confirmed. And way too personal to get into. Really none of our business.

The big question is whether he'll be back? All I hear is "no way they could work together again", but this is The Cure we're talking about, so anything is possible.

I really wish RS could keep the lineup a secret until the show. How cool would that be? The Cure take the stage at Bestival, here comes Jason, Simon, Robert and....who's it going to be? Paul? Perry? Reeves? Someone new?
Just think that would be a lot of fun. : )

But they can certainly do the show as a trio. Remember, that was Robert's intention after he fired Perry and Roger (and Daryl). They were planning to play the 05 festivals as a trio, until Paul contacted RS and said he'd like to play again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Craig - what were the "flux" comments made last year? I must have missed them.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Robert posted this on Jan. 13th, 2010:
"BUT THERE IS STILL A LOT OF FLUX AROUND...
SO MORE REAL NEWS WHEN THE AIR CLEARS"

    ReplyDelete
  25. i'd imagine it wouldn't be kept a secret until the show itself unless it ended up being porl. there's never even been any announcement of the lineup changing, so i think it'd be kind of weird for them to just show up at bestival with a new lineup. i think we'll either hear something before then, or it'll turn out that porl's back.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Or maybe they'll just use even more pre-recorded keyboards and pre-recorded guitars.., they've already been using pre-recorded stuff for the past 10 years, and at the most recent shows they started using for the first time pre-recorded backing vocals, so things are only getting worse, instead of a further line-up change I can see it being Robert, Simon, Jason and a whole load of pre-recorded crap.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't like the way Brent thinks, though he's probably closer to the truth than I'd like to admit.

I really can't imagine them adding even more backing tracks, though. That would push it past being ridiculous, and just be sad.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ lindsey @ craig - many thanks for the info. Unfortunate news (to me!).

@brent - maybe with the success of the Crystal Castles track, it will just be Robert and taped tracks... or DJ Robert!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not too hot on the backing tapes, etc. I understand that they haven't had keys on the last few tours, but why did they even use backing tapes when Roger was around? I have an idea...how about just hire someone to play them when they go on the road...not necessarily a new band member?

  30. Question for you, Craig.

You're supposedly a fan of the band, but when the matter of Porl (who goes by Porl, and not Paul...how about respecting that?) comes up, you've repeatedly felt free to violate his privacy. You claim "oh, it's private and none of our business" but then you turn around and basically tell all of the gossip you think you know, or leave enough insinuation that readers can follow along. Every time someone asks, you're quick to say "oh yes, it's confirmed, 100%, he's gone."

    Why is that?

If Robert wanted something about Porl, or anyone else, formally or publicly known, he would have said so. If he hasn't said anything, maybe there's nothing to report. If he hasn't said anything, maybe you as a supposed 'fan' should RESPECT THAT. If you really have the respect for the band that you claim, maybe you should understand that making all these comments is hurtful and unproductive, and adds nothing but a lot of gossip.

Until Robert says that Porl is gone, no, it's not 100% confirmed. You're a fan site. You're not the band's press office. Since Parched Art did the Disintegration remaster and website artwork, I wouldn't be too sure of that.

sorry for the long post, but this is enough. You wouldn't gossip this way about Simon, Robert or Lol, so show Porl the same respect.

  31. danielttsu you couldn't sound any more ignorant, best you shut up for your own good.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @ Brent: ignorant? I think not. Oh, I can guarantee you not, in fact. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the CoF fan club will come out of the woodwork now. Let me guess the next line: "you're ignorant, CoF knows things BEFORE the official site, Craig is the band's very special friend, all the real news is HERE..." have I left anything out?

Cof gets things from Google before the official site gets round to posting them. And from ex-band members who probably appreciate the free advertising for their gigs. Which is fine. They're not an official news outlet, and Robert has taken exception to this site before.

The band members are human beings. They're entitled to privacy. That includes Porl. If someone close to the band is giving Craig information that is not public, he should respect that and keep it to himself. Period. I'm not going to argue about this. I'm just going to say that I think it's objectionable that Craig continually talks about how Porl is "out of the band" right now. Maybe he is; maybe he isn't. If we were meant to know, we'd know. If not, respect the band's privacy and shut up.

  33. Respectability and Porl come hand in hand don't they Daniel ?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Daniel - But I have made it perfectly clear (or so I thought), that I have absolutely no clue whether Porl is in the band at this time or not!

I have been the first to admit that I have made mistakes in the past, for which Robert and Daryl have taken me to task for. Some were major, some minor, but I have ALWAYS respected the private lives of all members, past & present, and I hate that you think I have something against Porl. I can assure you that I don't.

There are others out there who do, and have posted some really nasty, personal stuff here, which I immediately delete, hopefully before anyone reads it. Hardly the actions of someone who has something against Porl.

As for the "100% confirmed" thing. Do you know where that came from? No, you don't. Considering the source, I feel absolutely confident in saying that. Should I say it? I don't know, but I think I agree with you that I really shouldn't have said anything to begin with.

But that story did not start with me. I kept my mouth shut for a long time, and only spoke up when the rumors started getting out of hand, and when there was "panic" when Porl started selling some his guitars.

My point in talking about it then, was to try to reassure a few people, and to stress again that there are always arguments and blowups in the band, and they always seem to work them out eventually. How many times has Simon "quit" and come back? Ever think Robert would be friendly with Lol again after the court case? Or be on good terms with Roger again, after 2005?

My point was that, yes, something happened, but don't write Porl off just yet. It doesn't matter if any of them are in the band right now, because The Cure isn't active. It only matters once they crank it up again, and Robert decides what he wants the band to be on the next go around.

In my defense, I have never posted any of this on CoF or on the Twitter account, only in the comments. Not sure that really makes it any better, I guess I foolishly think the comments are private and no one really reads them.

I'm very sorry if you took anything I said the wrong way, and sincerely apologize to you if you found my comments offensive or hurtful, whether to yourself or Porl. Not my intent at all. Honestly, I think you've read me wrong, and have assigned motives to me that I do not have.

But I take your criticism to heart, and agree that the best course in this case would have been to say nothing at all.

And Brent, the only ignorant person in this thread is me.

  35. Daniel you are wrong in accusing Craig of being disrespectful for reporting a line-up hiccup.
In fact he's not even reporting it in his 'news' section, he's casually talking about it between fans/friends in the 'comments' section, and I think Craig has a right to talk about things he's heard about one of his favourite bands just as anyone else does...

Before Craig ever reported anything about a line-up change Porl himself told a fan who personally met Porl near where he kept his boat the he was currently having a break from The Cure. That's a fact.
Craig has said nothing more than that.
If Porl personally said that to a fan (which he did) before Craig ever reported it, than there's absolutely no problem with what Craig said at all...

Craig you did not need to apologize to Daniel at all, Daniel should be apologizing to Craig.

Craig has never said anthing more than what Porl has personally told a fan of the band...

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hope you're clear on that Daniel...
The very first thing written on any of The Cure boards about a line-up hiccup was when Porl personally told a fan who met him near where he kept his boat that he was "currently out of the band for the time being".

  42. and just my opinion this stuff-

i first read about the porl rumor on a forum, not here. and when i did hear about it here, it was only because i obsessively read the comments of these things - craig never said anything about this in an actual post. he definitely refrained from saying anything for a long time while many of the rest of us, myself included, pushed him to tell us what was going on. i don't think he's done anything wrong, and he's certainly never said "oh yes, it's confirmed, 100%, he's gone." he has said it's 100% confirmed that there was some sort of falling out or that he left the band at one point, but he has been VERY diligent in repeating that he does not know the current state of things and always tries to give us hope that porl could be back.
