  3. I hope this doesnt confirm our fears of Porl going?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Ex-Cure kinda says it all.....

    ReplyDelete
  5. I never saw him use these on the tour though, so these may just have been freebies to him from schecter, but who knows? let's let everyone complain about the remaster some more, I personally dont have a problem with the remaster, but what do I know, I'm not a producer like all of the others

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well they also had at least one of Robert's guitars for sale, too.

I think ex-Cure just means these were used in The Cure. If we want to read things into what the descriptions say, then you have to notice that it also says "owned by Porl Thompson (The Cure)". No ex-Cure there.

  7. Wow, it would be neat to own a guitar, previously played by Porl!

    ReplyDelete
  8. would it be rad to have one of his guitars, but would cost a fraction to get a brand new Schecter!!! Notice his Signature model isn't listed there!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Probably they are just too bad (in appearance and sound) to be kept mostly if you're not in the band anymore. At least considering these prices. Better sell them now while he's still there. I'd worry if he would sell his red 335 though.

    ReplyDelete
  10. this is why I dont think it means the end of Porl, he mainly played his custom corsair and a custom c-1 on tour, none of which are here, it would be cool to grab one of these though, I own the Ultracure now, but one of those 12 strings would be nice

  11. $600 bucks for a non-knock-off guitar previously owned by a member of The Cure? That's fuk'in ridiculous! I hope a hard core Cure fan gets at least one of them.

If I lived in the UK I'd probably ...

  12. I think I have a picture from the Pearl where Porl is playing the same model 12 string as the black one with the black block fret inlays. I'm not saying it's the same guitar, but I think it's the same model. I don't have the picture on this computer, but I'll look for it.

  13. hello folks, I bought the 12 string Ultra for my husband. When I spoke to the guy at the shop, he was very genuine. The guitars haven't come from Porl himself, but rather through a roadie. They are guitars that have been used as practice models, set-ups etc. They are (i would think) freebies from Schecter to Porl. From what I can gather, Porl himself isn;t selling these, but he has played them in the past. For me, that is enough to warrant buying my husband, who has all the Cure signature guitars except the RS1000, one!
If you need reassurance about these, call the shop. The guy there is very genuine and I believe him when he says that these guitars have come from a Cure roadie that was tasked with making room for new stock!
Why not make some money on a freebie?
Anyway - I COMPLETELY don't think that this has anything to do with the ridiculous rumours that Porl is going to leave The Cure. Why would he?
Take the chance to pick up a very well-priced Schecter guitar that has been touched by one the the best (if underrated) guitarists of his time? I did! :-)

  14. Jubline: The "rumor" is hardly ridiculous. In fact, it was confirmed. But that was last year. The question now is, will he be asked back?

    ReplyDelete
  15. And no one ever said that the decision to leave was up to Porl.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sent Craig a pic of Porl playing the black diamond series 12 string at the Pearl in Vegas, maybe he'll post it.

@Jubline, very cool! Your husband is a lucky duck!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Whoa...(at the rumor not actually being as such...)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I stand corrected Craig. I thought that the whisperings were all just rumours, I sincerely hope that Porl will be back with The Cure as I truly think that they are a better band with him! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hahaha...I have been wondering that for years! : )

I would guess that they want to let things work themselves out, see what happens next.

Who knows, maybe Porl is in the studio with them right now, working on new tracks. But last I heard, Porl had gone off to live on a boat.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jubline: No problem. It's all very confusing at times. : )

    ReplyDelete
  21. I guess that they all need time out (especially at their age ;-) )
I really don't want Porl to leave though - he is an awesome guitarist and I prefer The Cure's sound with them as a 4 with Porl on Guitar (Contraversial perhaps, but it's what I think)
Anyway - I really don't think that the sale of these guitars can prove (or otherwise) that Porl is leaving - afterall, there was an RS1000 too, but I was just too damned slow to get that one!

  22. Entreat,
I haven't been paying attention to the COF comments much lately. What have people been saying about the remaster? I must have missed that discussion. Granted, I would have liked an SACD version, but I think it sounds great. Was it on COF where people were complaining?

  24. WHAT WHAT WHAT! Has Porl left or what? I am so confused! I love the man too much for him to go! He's the only one of them I have met as well (a 65DOS gig in Brighton interestingly).

I wish I saved my money for one of these babies as well, I just spent my money on a fuzz factory trying too hard to be Stephen Malkmus :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Monty, check out the posts below under the
Disintegration Store reports heading, alot of complaints from back seat producers

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ENTREAT, sorry some of us don't like it as much as the original. And sorry that we're discussing it in front of you. I promise to only say good things from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @craig i knew the rumor was confirmed, i didn't realize the boat part was. i do recall reading somewhere that he was off to live on a boat.

    ReplyDelete
  28. J. lets not get dramatic, I am referring to the radicals that post this type of shit
    ENTREAT PLUS SUCKS!

According to this video, cholesterol is badly affecting his mind!

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdigl2_disintegration-deluxe-download-3cds_webcam

I have no problem with opinions, but flat out stating that something sounds like shit may deter people from checking it out, or feeling remorse about their purchase, I have a high end system and the remaster sounds great, it does sound less impressive in my car however which is a not so expensive system. I'm sure the equipment that Robert Smith has to master on is a little better than what most of us have, so it may sound different to everyone and also alot of recordings now and remixes are done with portable players in mind which we all know sound alot different, but this is the sign of the times

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Craig when was this rumour confirmed, I cannot remember - I thought it was a mere thread post.

and to the others, I value both Entreat and Entreat Plus, I really enjoy the new mix even if it sounds different. Enjoy it for what it is! =]

  30. brb having a fucking heart attack

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ ENTREAT, my apologies. I must have taken something personally that didn't have anything to do with me...

I'm certainly not of the opinion that Entreat plus sucks. Not at all. I prefer the original as of now. But I've only had it a week. My comments were first impressions.

I wouldn't care about audio production if weren't for the Cure's music. Disintegration and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me is where my obsession with the recording process/production etc, began.

I love the remaster of Disintegration. I imagine it's what it sounded like on that first playback. In a couple of weeks I'll probably be meekly retracting my comments on Entreat Plus. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. D'oh!!! ENTREAT, dude, I'm sorry. :( I didn't read all the crazy crap that was posted after a couple of us were discussing the mix in a civilized manner. I hadn't realized people got crazy about it. I feel like a chode. I'm sorry to snap at you like that.

  33. I have a Schecter Ultra III which Porl played here and there. I was pretty excited when he came out wearing it when I saw them in Santa Barbara. It was even the same color (I think for Shake Dog Shake since the guitar tunings are diff. for that one). I love mine. Would love that other 12 string if money wasn't an issue right now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. yes can someone show me evidence of this rumour being confirmed, poor DJ is getting quire distressed about it on facebook

    ReplyDelete
  36. j. Dont worry about it, your comments weren't bad, it's difficult to get the tone of the argument in a written form anyway as with emails, especially with Robert Smith with caps lock on he seems to be pissed off all of the time

    ReplyDelete
  37. i'm saving up for the white tattooed Corsair Bigsby...$900 is a long way from now, but i hopefully can get one before they stop making them.

if i can't get one, then i'll get the Ultra Cure guitar. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. The confirmation I got on this was in private emails, which I will obviously not post. This all happened sometime last year, and could be totally irrelevant now.
So no one needs to have a heart attack, or start wondering about replacements.

And I'm sure none of us would really be surprised if a "free spirit" like Porl decided to take some time off and go live on a boat for a while. Maybe he wants to paint again, and that will inspire him.

Look, they fight and argue all the time. That just seems to be the nature of the Cure. But things always seem to get sorted out later.

Like Robert has said, Simon quits after every tour, sometimes without even informing Robert, but he always comes back after having some time off. And did you ever think there was a chance of Robert and Lol being friends again, after the ugliness of the court case? Or of Robert and Roger patching things up from 05, and being on good terms again today?

So something happened with Porl last year, and he was out of the band. Doesn't mean he can't come back. Only 2 people know what that relationship is like today, and neither of them have said anything publicly. Call me naive, but I take that as a positive sign that maybe things will work out, so why say anything you might regret later?

If not, then we get a new Cure. Hardly the first time we've had to deal with that. : )

    ReplyDelete
  39. Craig is our collective Dad, easing all of our worries :P

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hahahaha...never been called that before, but okay, if it can help, I'll take it. : )

    ReplyDelete
  41. What does everyone think the chances are of an official announcement - discussing the current and future status of the band - being made before the end of summer?

I'll play safe and say there's a zero to slim chance :(

    ReplyDelete
  42. Guess those silly dreams of a couple random tour dates this year are completely dashed now. *sniffle*

    ReplyDelete
  43. Can we get a new drummer while we're at it? *awaits the egg bombardment* Glee style.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Craig we do love you.
And from the radio interview Roger is talking to Bob as Bob sent Roger the remaster.

    But still

    Craig, much love.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jubline,

Can you post a pic of the guitar you bought for your husband? I can't seem to find an image of this model.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Porl lives his life in an artistic way and he seems to be pulling a Van Gough moment. Next thing you know he's cutting off his ear. He kind of reminds me that old episode of the Simpsons when Krusty changes his identity and lives in a boat.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I truly hope that the people that want to buy Schecters are not the same ones that have bashed Schecters in the past, they make great guitars, it is the processing and effects they are using now that is the difference in sound, The Ultracure is solid Mahogany and Duncan 59 pickups, not alot to complain about there, it's all of the studio tricks that make everything sound wierd. You can tell on the last few albums they are using more odd sound effects and backing tracks, it's a sign of the easy lazy computer days of recording

    ReplyDelete
  48. I bought the 6 string electric as a result of seeing this entry on chainofflowers at the weekend and am pleased as punch.

£450 for a guitar owned by Porl Thompson seems like a real bargain to me - it seems to me he could have put these on ebay and made a lot more money.

The guys in Chandlers are really nice - they said they've been inundated with calls and e-mails about these guitars.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'll admit.. I tried schecters due to the Cure's use of them. I coudln't be happier. For my money, their quality standards seem to be where big names like gibson and fender used to be. The prices are EXTREMELY reasonable given the quality of the guitars.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I play music for church's Vacation Bible School once a year. My dream is to one day sport that big ol' white Porl Thompson Schecter guitar with the tattoo design on it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well I'm glad people actually appreciate these guitars instead of ignorantly bashing them for their sound as I said it isn't the guitars fault, it is the infatuation with new and strange digital effects pedals that alter the sound, there isn't much to a guitar, just wood and pick ups. I own the Ultracure and it sounds every bit as good as any Gibson out there, more resonant even, due to its body mass, I own Fenders as well as hollowbodies, I assure you Schecter guitars are amazing without being outrageously over-priced (Gibson...Ahem)
Congrats on your purchases! now you will see that they are great guitars

    ReplyDelete
  52. Who is bashing Schecter guitars for their sound? Every Schecter I have picked up and played with without any pedals have sounded phenomenal. In fact, they sounded so good, that my horrible guitar playing ability sounded decent. I would be a Schecter fan regardless of whether they had any ties to the Cure or not.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Glenn's 12 String Ultra (Ultra XII) arrived today - oh, the excitement! I have a photo of it _ how do I post it here?
Does anyone know if this model is standard Schecter issue as I can't find one at all on google or Schecter's site. Maybe it is an old model that they no longer make.
Anywhow, it looks and sounds beautiful! Black and white.
Glad that some of you have managed to get the guitars - a lot of money, but so worth it to own a bit of Cure history I think. x

    ReplyDelete
  54. Darth Butters, not on this thread, but older posts were complaining about Jasons drumming and the switch to schecters for ruining the Cure's sound

    ReplyDelete
  55. Slightly off topic...but what model of Gibson was Porl playing in the "Never Enough" music video?

    ReplyDelete
  56. ENTREAT, i would disagree with the switch to Schecter guitars, and agree with Jason's drumming. Someone on youtube posted a video of the problem with his drumming and yes, he hits the cymbals way too much. i don't so much mind the sound effects he's using as I think they aid in keeping the tempo up. I did notice that when he first joined up in the mid 90s that his drumming was significantly slower which brought down the tempo for much of the older songs. I don't know what happened to him. 1995 - 1998 his drumming was decent, i feel like it's diminished greatly since then.

    ReplyDelete
  57. that gibson in the never enough video looks like an ES-175, could be wrong though, i just noticed the single cutaway, it is a nice looking guitar though whatever

and can't we all just agree that the cure is awesome? i can listen to any lineup on youtube or cd or bootleg and be totally satisfied, THEY'RE JUST THE GREATEST BAND EVER!

    ReplyDelete
  58. actually i'm going to coin the phrase "Make Cure, Not War"

    ReplyDelete
  59. Darth Butters (great name by the way) I like all lineups of the Cure. I do think that Jason switched drum heads starting with the 2004 album, they sound like cardboard boxes, when he joined they sounded great, I dont think he 's a bad drummer at all, I actually like his drumming (not the party line here) but his choice of equipment is what my problem is, also the over use of the cymbals, I think came from working with Ross Robinson, that is when his sound changed, like he's playing in a metal band

    ReplyDelete
  60. Does anyone know when Porl may have used the sunbursts?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I own the Gibson 175 that you see in the Never Enough and Love Song video as well as Show and many others. It is a late 40's Gibson 175. It has been altered (3 pickups and black finish plus a Paul Bigsby headstock.) Anyway it is a great guitar and has a soul. You vintage guitar collectors know what I mean. Anyway, you can see a couple photos at www.myspace.com/outerlimitsstudio

The sunburst schecters Porl played were during the Paris Live show in July a few years ago as I remember.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm very jealous of you Mr. Howard as that is my favourite guitar that Porl has used

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thanks, ENTREAT!

I think Jason was better when he joined too. I just don't like the added cymbals where there shouldn't be cymbals being played, also during down times of songs, I'm still hearing the cymbals. I also do not like the cardboard box sound. Don't get me wrong, I'll be forever grateful for The Cure, however, the cymbals are making me nuts@

    ReplyDelete
  64. feckdrink,

I agree, that was my favorite guitar as well. When he offered it to me I couldn't believe it because if I could chose any guitar he had, that would be the one. I am very happy to have that guitar.

    Joe

  71. Just picked up one of the Corsair Sunbursts - v nice guitar, it was difficult to choose which one, but one felt slightly different to me so went with gut instinct. Great guys in the shop - one of them gave me the heads up that they'll shortly be getting one of Porl's vintage Fenders thruugh their doors. Also hinted that it will be pricey...

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hopefully Porl will also be selling the clothes he wore on the 4Tour.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's official, i'm selling my Star Wars Master Replicas lightsabers on ebay to raise money to buy the Schecter Porl Thompson signature Corsair Bigsby guitar...i call it trading geekness...i just hope our church doesn't mind the tattoo design...lol!
