10 Years, 10 Essential Albums

Riot Fest has finally confirmed that the 10th mystery band has already been announced, so it's one of the bands already listed, not a late addition.

Leading rumors as to who & what the album will be?

Flaming Lips - 'Transmissions From The Satellite Heart'
Television - 'Marquee Moon'
Rise Against - 'Siren Song'
The Cure - 'Disintegration'

Update (09/10/14): The 10th album is finally announced and it's...'Heaven Tonight' from Cheap Trick. Huh, I don't think anyone guessed that. Or even wanted it?

While I never thought there was a realistic chance of it being 'Disintegration', it was fun to dream that it might just happen. So I guess we know what to expect from The Cure's set now. Do I even need to do the live updates? :P (Thanks Christine)

  1. If it's not the Cure, why all the secrecy?

    1. If it is The Cure, why all the secrecy?

I can't imagine Robert doing that to fans. How many more fans would have made plans to go if they knew in advance that they were doing something special like that?

Hard to save money, get time off, make plans, etc, if it's announced this late.

So as much as I'd love to believe it's The Cure, I don't think it is.

Please prove me wrong, Robert! :)

    3. Very true. And I remember all of the complaining. :)

    4. Sydney was officially announced on May 5th. Shows were May 31st & June 1st. So 26 days before the shows.

Even if they announced it today, that's only 11 days notice, if Toronto is included, 18/25 days if it's only in Chicago & Denver like the others.

    5. As far as I know Toronto is not doing anything extra for the show.

  2. Good point, Craig. I *might* just barely be able to get to Chicago, so if it will be the Cure, I sure hope they announce it soon!!! The window is closing.... I still don't understand the secrecy if it's not the Cure, though. But, maybe I'm out of touch because (A) I'm not too familiar with the other bands on the list and (B) my love for the Cure clouds my perception on the issue.

    1. My guess? They had a band already picked and they backed out of the fest or changed their mind about doing the album and now they're scrambling to find a replacement.

Or there's some sort of contractual reason they can't announce it until closer to the actual show. Possibly because the band is doing the album set somewhere else, too. That would make me guess it will be Flaming Lips.

I don't think it's Television doing Marquee Moon, as I think they would have announced that when they were added to the lineup a few days ago.

  3. You know, there is a way I could see this happening. Last year, their headliners only got 75 minute sets. What if they announce the schedule, and The Cure are only playing 75 minutes? Fan outrage!

Oh, but guess what? That 75 minutes will be all of 'Disintegration' plus the b-sides.

I don't expect that, but I'd be very happy with it! :)

    1. Well, I got the very expensive 2 days VIP tickets (I would have gotten a single day, had I known they were coming) for Toronto. I'm sure it will be a great show, but it would really be awesome if it was The Cure & Disintegration.

  5. I don't think that I'd consider any release by Cheap Trick to be "essential".
