Cure's 'Purple Haze' 2nd best Hendrix cover

Guitar World says The Cure's 'Purple Haze' is #2 on their 10 Best Covers of Jimi Hendrix Songs list:
"If you heard this cover of "Purple Haze" with no context, it would be well over a minute into the song before you would have any clue this was a Jimi Hendrix cover.
Of course, anyone who thought Robert Smith & Co. would launch right into a fiery, tritone-laced rendition of arguably Hendrix's most famous song clearly had never heard Disingegration — which, according to Kyle from South Park, is the best album ever.
This synth-laden cut takes the No. 2 spot for being bold enough to push Hendrix's catalog into new territory, instead of trying to outdo the man. A nearly impossible feat, unless you're our choice for No. 1 ..." (Thanks Greg)

    1. It probably didn't even register. It's a terrible cover that was supposed to be just practice and not end up on 'TIB', and Robert was upset when it did.

  6. I like what they did with the "Stone Free Tribute" version - like all great covers, they put their own stamp on it, yet still retained the spirit of the original. "Virgin Radio Version" is a straight up facsimile of Hendrix's original. Still rocks though... What's even better is that the Cure are recognised on a guitar magazine website - they never really get kudos in those types of magazines/websites - for a song that barely features any guitar :)

  9. I love the Foxy Lady cover, it's so cheeky. :) Never a huge fan of the PH cover, but it's not too bad. One of my favorite Jimi covers (which is sure to lose me points here) is Sting's "Little Wing". Then again, Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of that same song is ace as well.

  10. Oh, and Shudder To Think's "Crosstown Traffic" is pretty manic as well. :)

  11. I like the unreleased version of this track much, much more than the official version on the compilation. Actually I think the version that was released is horrible in comparison.
