    1. Yes, Porl is now Pearl. He sent us a note about this a couple of years ago: http://craigjparker.blogspot.com/2012/05/note-from-porl.html

  3. Cleaned all of that up. Please don't feed the little troll. His posts will always be deleted as soon as I see them.

  4. As much as I love Reeves guitar playing, Porl will always be my favourite Cure guitarist :) So good to see that he is still playing, have you heard how how he is doing at all Craig?

  5. yeah, we enjoyed Reeves & Bowie shows ~ its literally crushing that Porl won't play w/ the Cure anymore... just heartbreaking.
This sounds like a really cool event, though. Porl is very friendly & kind to fans, so... I hope they do well

  6. Reeves fits in well with the band but for me also Porl will always be The Cure's guitarist. Hope he is well.

  7. If anyone from here goes there, can you please ask if Pearl is happy to give us a few words to let us know how things are?

  8. It's so great to see Pearl again and smiling. Love love love!

  9. If he came back into the band would he be classed as The Cure's first female member, or....

  10. One of my favorite ever guitarists along with Reeves. Just curious, I thought Po(ea)rl permanently tatooed eye make-up? looks like he has had breast implants in this pic. Did he perform live at this get together, wish I could have made it!

  13. I'll just use the pronoun Genesis P-Orridge uses to say; s/he looks very happy, and I hope it is so. Glad to see Pearl smiling and playing!

  14. Does anyone know the reason he left the Cure?

  15. I'm glad Pearl grew his hair out again. :) Looks like his face tattoos are gone too. :)

  16. DSC. Porl's hair had been receding for a long time so Pearl's hair must be a wig? Pearl does look fantastic though and great to see her. :-)

  17. Does anyone know what songs he performed or are there any reviews out there?

    1. Yes, I have a review from someone who went, but waiting on permission to post. Until then, here's what Pearl played:

"Pearl played three songs with Les Paul's Trio and Vinny Martell of Vanilla Fudge. The first was obviously something of his - an instrumental to which the other musicians improvised. Les Paul's Trio took the lead on the second song for a Les Paul-esque jazzy number, and Vinny Martell took over on the third song for a cover of All Along The Watchtower."

  18. umm, err. everyones acting like this hasnt happened. him naming himself pearl i thought was a new artistic chapter or something. is this a joke on his behalf? hes married to roberts sister. its pretty shocking for me i have to say the guys friken turned into a girl? am i missing somethng?

    1. Well, you seem to be missing some compassion and understanding. The reason people aren't discussing it at length is because they respect Pearl and their new identity (I won't use gendered pronouns for them as we don't know how Pearl wants to be referred to). As surprising as this development may or may not be, Pearl's personal decisions surrounding their identity shouldn't be the focus of this conversation.

    2. nothing about compassion or understanding. im not homophobic, but if you woke up today an your dad was wearing a dress an makeup an everyone acted like nothing happened im sure you be like dad, what goin on? the fact no one talking bout is what im finding odd.he is married, i even know somebody who had a backstage situation back during wish tour.this isnt about being gay. but it is strange, an you think it be made more clear. that all im saying.

  19. Nobody has ever explained his falling out with Robert, but I suspect that Porl and Robert's sister split, which is what led to his departure from the band and subsequent sale of all of his classic instruments. This is by no means confirmed and is only conjecture on my part.

    1. I believe that it has more to do with the fact that Porl wanted to record new material and was fed up with the fact that Robert seems to have had little to no interest in doing so. It's been half a decade since the release of '4:13 Dream', and there hasn't been any solid indication from Robert that the band is going to be doing anything more than playing nostalgia shows for the time being.

      Delete
    2. Maybe. 4:13 Dream was a dud and the other half of it remains unreleased, which is probably all of the best songs. I really hope that Smith doesn't re-record them and cut Porl's parts. They should be issued as intended some day.

  20. Hey-man, I wanna hear more abt the "backstage situation" during the Wish tour(?) ...I ran into the band in Williamsburg during that tour (over a bag of M&Ms)(yeah, i know-weird) ~ h-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m...

  23. Question, questions, none of this really matters does it. History is an eternal mystery. Pearl its so wonderful to see you keeping the freak flag flying and dreaming in colour. Much love.

  24. normally i would say, it's no one's business... but when Pearl thrusts herself back into the limelight in celebration of her former career (which was AB-FAB!!!)... and just happened to be garnered as a man, then i think to ignore it would be to ignore the elephant in the room.

i luv this sh*t! ...and i think it makes Pearl infinately more interesting, no matter how she chooses to channel her creativity.

(don't mean to make light of a collapse of family, 'cus i know 1st hand how bad having your life yanked out from under you by someone's midlife crisis can be)

  25. It's presumptuous to assume Pearl is now female simply because of the name and his appearance. He always had a unique, cool, artistic style. I didn't see anything in his announcement that he is now a female. So to refer to him as "she" and "her" without any knowledge is wrong.

  26. Peter went to the event and sends in this review:

"We tweeted yesterday about Pearl's appearance at the Cutting Room in NYC last night. I did go, I'm really glad I went, and figured I'd send you a brief recap.

It was a book release party for Lisa S. Johnson, a photographer who spent the past few years photographing the guitars of 108 different rock stars. Pearl is in the book. In an interesting coincidence, there was a slideshow of some of her photos and included among it was a shot of one of Reeves' guitars.

Pearl played three songs with Les Paul's Trio and Vinny Martell of Vanilla Fudge. The first was obviously something of his - an instrumental to which the other musicians improvised. Les Paul's Trio took the lead on the second song for a Les Paul-esque jazzy number, and Vinny Martell took over on the third song for a cover of All Along The Watchtower.
It was a small, intimate room and I was able to get a table about ten feet from the stage. I tried to take a few photos for you, but I have an old flip phone which is apparently incapable of taking decent photos from such an insurmountable distance. There was a videographer there and lots of other people were taking pictures, so maybe something will turn up online at some point.

Something to look out for... before the performance, Lisa Johnson spoke to us and also mentioned that there will be a forthcoming series called 13 Guitar Stories. It consists of videos of musicians talking about their guitars, and one of the videos is about Pearl. I think it's coming out soon-ish, but don't quote me on that.

And on a personal note, I got to meet him after the show! I realized how difficult it is to articulately express how much appreciation I have for all of his music and artwork that's meant so much to me for so long, but he was very gracious and friendly.

I wouldn't have known about this event had you not posted it, so thanks for that!"

  27. Yeah well, even RSX has boobs.

In any event; once she (Pearl) discovers how horribly the whole world treats women, the androgyny thrill will be gone... so, i hope he didn't cut it off!

  28. Simon's first marriage was coming to an end during the wish tour. And certain things weren't exactly kept secret.

  29. I don’t really respond to these kind of things but some of the above comments are really on the cusp.

“only conjecture” ???!!!! – what, so you made it up then!

And Shawn, what are you waffling about 4:13 for? What has that got to do with the price of eggs? I had you down as more intelligent.

Amos – total drivel mate - get lost if you’re here to troll about.

None of you know anything, so anything you say is just a reflection of your own flaws, and in some cases prejudice.

And the person who wrote about RS ‘boobs’ – please put a photo of yourself up so we can have a good laugh at you.

Expected a bit better of Cure fans.

  33. its blowing me away, how sensitive people are getting. do you think people on here posting dont love the cure? dont love porl ? people get all defensive an in typical behaviour, make things worse goin on about it. i shouldnt have said anything an didnt mean anything by it an im sure the boob comment was a joke by so so. flaws? prejudice? dont give me that rubish where all fans of a band that wears makup and sings songs about love on a friday. dont wana hear jesus loves you stuff. there is a elephant in the room an its gona be discused an its only just started. i wish him well an will be watching in antisipation what he does next.
