12:30 PM Eden Gallup on Facebook/Instagram - Lollapalooza Soundcheck Chicago.

The very short Great Circle Tour comes to an end tonight in Chicago, as The Cure plays Lollapalooza for the very first time. Really hope they've come up with something special for tonight, and can top the fantastic set from Nine Inch Nails on Friday night. That will be tough, but if anyone's going to do it, it's The Cure. Anyway, it'll be fun no matter what, and I hope you all have a great time at the show tonight!

The Cure are scheduled for 2 hours, starting at 8 PM central. That's 9 PM eastern, 7 PM mountain, and 6 PM pacific. If you're not sure of the start time in your area, just use the clock over on the right or check here.

There will be a webcast tonight, and judging by the quality so far, it should be fantastic! It's scheduled to start at 8:15 PM central, so not exactly live, but close enough. Hope someone with a great connection and the right tools can get the HD recording of this.

If you're going to the show and wouldn't mind helping me with the live setlist and reports (via Twitter, email, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.), please let me know. With the live webcast & Olivier hopefully doing updates here, we shouldn't need to inconvenience anyone else, but it's always nice to have backup, just in case. Thanks!

  1. not to be cynical, because i do truly love the cure, but i'm calling the exact same set as at osheaga.

    1. Yeah, I know. Just hoping against hope that they'll shake it up a bit. Bands do get competitive at festivals, and with the nearly universal accolades NIN has received for their set, it would be nice to think The Cure would want to top that. Go dark & heavy. Ditch the pop stuff.

I know, wishful thinking. It will never happen.

    2. very 'wish' ful. ;) Still not giving up hope...

    3. I will never give up hope. And will still enjoy the "pop parade" for what it is. :)

    4. i talk a big game, and i guess i reserve my right to complain, but i'd watch them play the same set ten nights in a row and enjoy every second. :)

    5. Well now I'm disappointed that they've deviated from the previous set because I was looking forward to seeing them do A Forest. I hope they still do it!

    6. No 'Bananafishbones', either.

    7. Something tells me that Lollapalooza gave the band a harder cap on the set time than Osheaga did, hence the exclusion of those two.

    8. I feel like Chicago gets screwed when it comes to A Forest. I haven't seen them play it since 2000. :(

    4. Craig, not counting the 'Reflections' shows, when is the last time that the band played a darker set?

  4. Reeves came in late on 'JLH' and Robert's guitar seems to be awfully low in the mix. Is the latter by design?

    1. it is a strange mix down... i prefer what it sounds like from the audience. Interesting though.

    2. Not at all convinced with Reeves in the lineup - wanky guitar solos should stay in metal ; ) When the synths come up heavy in the mix, all is well again!!

  9. For what it's worth, "Want" is NOT pop. Goddamn I love this song.

  10. As an aside, that's a funky whammy bar on Robert's UltraCure.

  11. At what point do you think they can say, "Reeves has done enough of these shows... let's not feel like we have to play 'Wrong Number' every night."?

  13. As a Cure fan from 1990 on, I must say that I am disappointed with this show. I am bored, actually. Maybe because there hasn't been any new material for so long that was worth the cost of the product. Hate to be Debby Downer here, am I alone? I mean, The Walk, seriously they are still playing that song???? Over it! Robert looks like hell as well. Makeup is not hiding anything at this point. Before (90's) it might have added something but now it takes away. Take a lesson from Kiss (the band) and to see your actual ageing I might actually feel something again. Sorry to rain on anyone's parade. I love the cure but I wish I could have spent this time watching old videos and live performances when it was actually entertaining. It hurts me to say.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. See their actual aging? They wear more makeup each night than Robert does during a mini tour. Oh, and as much as I like some of their stuff, have you heard Paul Stanley's voice as of late? Not exactly music to my ears.

      Delete
    2. Robert still sounds great, you're right! Should have just kept this to myself instead of blabbing away. I must be alone in feeling this way.

      Delete
    3. Colin, I don't entirely disagree with you, but the only thing that would solve this problem is if Robert were to start growing younger, and aging doesn't work that way. I suppose that cutting his hair might help, but Mary would probably chew him out for that.

      Delete
    4. Shawn, thanks for engaging a conversation. I guess I long for the older days. They're gone but I have great memories!

      Delete
    5. I do agree that Robert could lose at least 40 pounds. It would make him look younger.

      Delete
    6. Perhaps he should take up bike riding? It's certainly worked for Simon!

  14. The only song I wanted to hear tonight was Bananafishbones.

    1. I guess you could say spoiled. You could also say uninspired for The Cure.

    1. I recently read some pretty interesting stuff on ETS (NIN forum) about getting multiple chunks of downloaded live streams including shortly after the stream and verifying each chunk, merging together etc. for perfect captures - might be useful in future - search for "echoing the sound" and find the thread "How to capture audio/video streams"

  29. ANY Cure setlist is much better than No Cure setlist. I will accept (and love) whatever crumbs that they want to throw my way.

Sure, it is not my perfect setlist - and let's be honest, if it was, I would then find another setlist that I want to hear.

This is what happens when a band has the longevity and back catalog that The Cure has.

All I care about is that they are still putting on shows and that they are enjoying to perform.

    Bring on ACL!!!!!!!

    1. This was my first Cure show for me and my husband. We are both 25, so there hasn't been much of a chance for us to see them, unless we went to a major UK/EU fest (which isn't a financial possibility). We were totally blown away. Had no clue they sounded that great live. Was it a "poppy" set-list? Sure. But are we (and a LOT of other people our age and younger at Lolla) happy that we finally get to see the Cure? Absolutely.

  30. Oooouuh it seems it was time for The Cure to end this tour. To sum up, people want new stuff, changing sets, lost weight, cut hair, a lifting. Can't say I disagree with a few things ;))

  31. In fact what Robert did write on the official set list, highlighted in red about the piece to be played for Hot Hot Hot, on time unfortunately occurred, all organizers of the heck..... ://// x

  32. When playing at festivals I can see the point in doing quite a lot of more well-known songs. Not everybody is hardcore fans like we are. However, I really miss a couple of gems for the die-hard fans this summer. And there are ALWAYS hundreds of them at any festival. Robert surely knows this. Last summer was a lot better. Wo would have believed that Bananafishbones or Just One Kiss would pop up. Not to mention The Top and Fight? Same Deep... And a few airing of Cold and Hanging Garden also added to the feeling that even a festival concert can hold some surprises. Anyway, lets not despair yet. Even a "dull" set from The Cure contains a lot more old, non-single songs than all of the other bands that is compareable. Just look at DM. Years and ueats of the same. Never and odd surprise for the fans. They just please the casual attenders. Try to count how many songs Cure have played since...hmm say..2000 , and you will see how good they treat the hardcore fans. A couple of dull set lists shouldn't put us off.

  36. I have to say that The Cure was firing on all cylinders for this show. I'm watching the webcast right now and despite the "pop" set, they are killing it. Sure, I have complaints, because we all will, but this is The Cure playing a pop set with power and emotion. The songs seem more "peppy" and "fast" to me. My one big complaint over the years is that the songs seemed to be slowing down, but not last night. Listen to Fascination Street and I almost feel as if I'm back at Dodger Stadium again back in 89.

    1. Yeah, no matter my feelings about the setlist(s) on this tour, no one can complain about their playing. They have sounded great!

Just makes me wonder what this lineup could do with certain other songs? We've heard what they can do with the pop set, now I hope we get a chance to hear them tackle a much darker set. Have a feeling it would be tremendous!

    2. This was my very first Cure show, so I was thrilled no matter what. "The Kiss," "Primary," and "Stop Dead" would have been awesome though...

  40. Being younger Cure fans (and not having the disposable income to travel to see the Cure in other parts of the world), my husband and I worried that we might not ever get a chance to see my absolute favorite band. When we heard they were playing Lollapalooza, we jumped at the chance. While the Lolla setlist was shorter than I expected, and I didn't get to hear "Open," "The Kiss," or "Primary," I had an amazing time. For my very first Cure show, I feel like it could only be better the next time I get to see them (I hope so!). The concert was the highlight of my summer, and I was so pleased to watch a sea of young people (25 and under) closing their eyes and singing to every song. So yeah, can't wait for another tour.
