  1. I like Jason's drum fills on Picture of You, rather than the two snare shots Boris played. It's new since the 2012 gigs.

    1. Ronan- can you give a timestamp on the video so I can check out what you're referring to? (I think I know but want to make sure)

    2. Sure, Jeff. It starts at 5.56, then 6.17, 6.38, 7.00, 7.21, etc.

that is the drum fill that Jason plays also in A Forest, Play for Today, Boys don't cry, Inbetween days, Fascination Street etc!!!

Jason is definitely the member with less musical taste in Cure history.

  2. Thanks for this.

Funnily enough I was only going to comment to remark on Jason too. This time though for the utterly irrelevant time in he does at the start of Plainsong. The drums are meant to crash in, we all know it's coming, it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when they do, but his annoying 'click click click' before that moment just ruins it.

    1. Honeyinmyveins, the annoying 'click click click' is so that all the band members know to start playing Plainsong at the same time.

    2. No, surely Jason invented the 'click click click' thing that all drummers do and he should be tarred and feathered for doing so. :-P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW0A1yp5wbk Boris did the SAME thing in 1989. It's appalling how some people relentlessly attack Jason, especially when it's not even warranted in this case.

    3. After 18 years you'd think if he was so awful we'd stop going to the shows.

    6. The click, click, click is to set the tempo of the song. If you've ever noticed on the cures setlists, Robert sets the tempo for each track and its notated on the setlist...Primary 120.

    7. To clarify I don't hate Jason or his playing. I don't like this one thing. It's a niggle, other drummers do it but for some reason it seems to grate here more. I don't know why but it does. It may simply be that it's more noticeable with Jason because of the greater availability of webcasts, better and more video and sound bootlegs etc.

    8. Those click click clicks sound bad because what comes afterwards is a the WEAK SOUND of his drums! his cymbals are barely heard... his snare drum sounds like he is hitting a cardboard box.

Compare to Boris... after the drumsticks count, his drums EXPLODE! the chimes and cymbals really shine and hear his snare and bass drum!

  3. Amazing with this and, what one loves , another hates. I personally hate the new drum fills he's doing in POY. Also the double crash cymbal hit at the start of plainsong sounds shit

  4. You guys are ridiculous... bananafish17 said it best: "After 18 years you'd think if he [Jason Cooper] was so awful we'd stop going to the shows."

    1. But even more than that, what I always ask the Jason bashers, if he's so awful, why hasn't Robert let him go? Robert reviews every show, he obviously hears what Jason does and likes his playing style. If not, he'd tell him to "correct" it, or he'd replace him, right? He's certainly not been shy about letting band members go.

So if you really are bothered by Jason's playing, you only have one person to blame...Robert Smith.

  11. I have listened to several recordings of the Cure with Reeves lineup the last being this Lollapalooza webcast, but I will hold final judgement until a "fully endorsed" recording comes out (i.e. Tim Pope's video). But all I have heard points me to one conclusion: Reeves is a bad fit for the Cure. Reeves is a very good guitarist but his sound with the Cure just doesn't do it for me. All the Cure songs now sound like "The Cure featuring Reeves Gabrels." His signature sound stands out too much. Each part sounds like the same guitar sound as "Yesterday's Gone". Its not for me. I know we can't get Porl back but I would rather just have them be a four-piece and let Robert play lead. I really hope they don't put out any new material with Reeves. I know it just won't sound like the Cure I love.

    1. I completely disagree. Every member has added a different perspective on The Cure sound. Not to mention any new material would be a welcome addition.

    2. 5... that seems to work the best. That gives us the fullest sound (the loudest sound). I love Porl but he was a monster on guitar, all over the place.... which I liked as well. Reeves is solid, a bit technical but I think we are lucky to have him. After all, he is part of our history.

    4. Eric... I agree when you say that it's now sound "The Cure featuring Reeves Gabrels." - But, I agree with others, too: Reeves can give good contributions... But this must be for The Cure in what it is or has became. A new material would be amazing. I think Robert knows what he is doing, anyway.

  12. Are the country stickers on Robert's acoustic guitar clues as to where they will be playing this year? The eyes that are stuck on there an extra "look here for clues" clue?

  13. I finally got around to watching this video of the Lollapalooza show. It's a great memento of the experience! But I can safely state that the real thing was about 1x10^6 times better than the impression of sound you get from the webcast. In particular, the experience of hearing Want and Fascination Street live complete blew me away! I can't even describe it! I've been listening to the Cure since 1985 and I know most of their songs by heart, but I totally loved the Greatest Hits format of this show. It was a massive celebration of life and music and friends. I can't wait for my next show, and I am hoping that the next Trilogy turns out to be reality because I will literally travel anywhere in the world to see it!
