Official site update

Robert has updated the official site, confirming Voodoo, Monterrey, and El Paso. And on any other shows for this year, he says: "…AND THERE MAY BE ONE MORE 'SPECIAL APPEARANCE' SHOW ON THE EAST COAST…BUT OTHERWISE… I THINK THAT IS IT FOR 2013! HEY NOW! ONWARDS..."

    1. Be fair, Shawn. He's been busy rehearsing the new "dark set" for these shows. :)

    2. Blah blah blah. If only he could change the setlists a bit...

  3. But UNFORTUNATELY no news for a new ALBUM & WISH REMASTER....this is the sad part of his updated comment!

    1. Just a thought, and probably wrong, but what if he's using all of the money from these shows to help finance the new record? Remember, no label means no money to record it, release it, promote it, etc.

    2. Craig, don't want to be rude but do you know the kind of amount a band like The Cure and Robert in particular have won in their carreer. Believe me, financing any project is no issue for a long long time.

    3. Where did I say it was an issue? Just a suggestion. And, yeah, I sort of know, David. I'm not an idiot.

  4. Well, I'm sad that there won't be any more shows. I was really hoping for something in Denver this time...it's hard to justify an expensive trip to El Paso! But, the silver lining is that now the Cure can finish that new album! I find it impossible to believe that the Cure will end everything with pop songs...so I'm going to look forward to 2014.

    1. Same here. Had my heart set on another Red Rocks show. Really hope I get to see them there before it all ends.

  5. 'Hey now.' That is a very odd thing for Robert or any English person to say...is it an oblique reference to the nature of the show on the east coast? Not a Larry Sanders reunion show...

    1. It means Smash Mouth is opening for them.

    2. I do wonder if that "Hey Now" comment is a clue? The 2 people most associated with that phrase, that I know of, are Jeffrey Tambor, Hank Kingsley, from the old Larry Sanders show, and Howard Stern, who adopted that as a sort of catch phrase.

I also think "Special Appearance" tells us something. It sounds like it would be an appearance at a festival or some event, maybe not a "pure Cure" show. Maybe a radio station event? One of those Holiday concerts they put on? Like the KROQ Almost Acoustic X-mas show? What's the east coast equivalent of that?

    3. Craig, probably the biggest east coast equivalent of the holiday concert is the Z-100 Jingle Ball that is held annually at Madison Square Garden. But since they are a strictly top 40 station and last year's concert headlined Bieber, Taylor Swift and One Direction, I doubt the Cure will fit in with their usual lineup.

This might be a real long shot, but there is also an annual event called Stand Up for Heroes which benefits injured service members, veterans and their families. The performers are a mix of stand-up comedians and musical guests. Past musicians have included Springsteen, Roger Waters, Elvis Costello and John Mayer, so again the Cure doesn't seem like a natural fit. But if perhaps Garry Shandling or Howard Stern are hosting this year, then the "Hey Now" comment might indeed be a clue. And this year it is on November 6th, right after Voodoo, whereas the holiday concerts wouldn't start until a month later.

But I think your Live from Letterman guess might be the likeliest scenario so far.

I think I just wet myself...

  7. *crosses fingers for Boston* I do wish they would properly tour though, these festivals, at least here in the US, always tend to be a singles fest and no album tracks. I'm disappointed they stopped playing "Just One Kiss" live as well. None of this moaning is meant to mean that I wouldn't just go see them anyway!

    1. Scott. I think Reeves is from Boston. Perhaps a gig on his hometown?

    2. Reeves is from Staten Island, NY. So, obviously they will be playing a show at the new Barclays arena in Brooklyn, just across the bridge from Reeves' hometown!

  8. So... does anyone have any guesses as to where this special east coast appearance may be? I have goosebumps right now.

  9. I'm with you, Scott. I'd love for them to come up to Boston for a proper show but I'd be happy with anything on the east coast. I have yet to see them live so, at this point, any Cure is good Cure.

    1. Exactly! We all know if Boris was still in the band, they'd play everyone's backyard! Give me a few minutes and I'll even put up a video on YouTube that proves this point.

      Jason Cooper must go!!!

      :P

  12. Okay, here's my initial guess from these "clues"...it might be a Live on Letterman show. Letterman tapes in NYC (East Coast), is a talk show (like Larry Sanders...Hey Now), and it would be a "Special Appearance" type of show.

If not, then I'm going with some sort of radio station Holiday concert event.

    1. Is it real long concerts or just few songs ?

      Delete
    2. Mostly just a short set. Maybe 10 songs. They live webcast the full set, then the band does one song on the Letterman show.

  13. Hmm....some interesting thoughts on set-lists, theories on financing projects etc.

How about this for a theory, not an invention of mine or something I'd cling to, "it just popped in there": Does anyone else think it's possible they will never go around the world on this scale again? Maybe they're not financing anything. Maybe that is why the sets are heavy with hits.

Maybe they'll drop off the live scene to a large extent after this. When they finish this 'tour' that started in 2012, whenever they decide that is, when would they do the same again with no new record to play? Maybe it's studio only from here onwards, maybe it's reissues only from here onwards, maybe just small UK shows from here onwards?

    Just a thought..

  14. Hope its the Beacon Theater in NYC. Went there for the Reflections tour and loved the venue for a Cure concert.

  15. Hope that East Coast show falls between Dec 17 and Jan 6, since I will be there visiting from Hawaii!

  16. Letterman or Stern on Sirius.....those kinda tie to the hey now comment....
Jeffery Tambour says Hey Now too....And Netflix just put out a new season of Arrested Development. Maybe a netflix concert?
Robert gives clues...but wrapped in misinformation at times. 1 random show in texas then they are out? Hmmmm I don't buy it. I'm still hoping for a reflections type show.....Hey now....now we are talking ....The first american member of the Cure Reeves should = more tour dates....Patience.... We will know by mid september...

  17. i wonder if any hopes are dead for a new album and Wish remaster??

    ReplyDelete
  18. I personally think a new album is unlikely for a couple more years now.

It seems pretty clear Robert wasn't 100% happy with the outcome of 4:13 Dream and given the odd milestone/turning-point albums they've made over the years, I can honestly see the Cure have one more new album in them and it will be amazing and good enough where Robert will say "Okay, it's finished now".

Given that Robert said (either much earlier this year or late last year) something along the lines of he had written only one or hadn't even written one good song in X months, it does look like his quality control standard is up high and he clearly won't allow another 4:13 to be released.

All the other fluff...I'm personally increasingly less interested in sploshing money around for new old stuff. It would maybe be nice to have a remaster of Wish and all that may be on it, but we don't need a remaster of anything beyond that. WMS (and I assume everything since) was recorded digitally and is far too recent in sonic terms to warrant bothering with.

It's surely obvious anyway that the Tim Pope recording will be the next Cure release? They won't have spent good money on that for it to go on a shelf to gather dust. And how far is that away....? I took myself away from Twitter, so have no idea what Mr Pope is up to currently.

    1. The issue with 4:30 Dream was mainly the production not the songs.

  23. I don't know. I think El Paso is a "special appearance" show. You know, just a one-off. There will probably be another one in some reasonably large city east of the Mississippi, a city where they don't often play live.
