This is just brilliant! Among other things, Robert once said that this song was about finding himself through the turmoil and haze of that particular period of time, "finally coming to my senses". It really comes across here, I think. I've always wanted to hear this one live - and Give Me It, too. Next? Thank you arcticscummie (and Craig)!
It *is* fan speculation but when I saw the first Reflection show in LA it sounded like Robert said at the end, "See you next year for The Top." I'm not dead positive that's what he said but it sounded like it and I'm willing to be corrected if somebody has better information than me.
For that matter, it is next year now and they have already played half of The Top. So in a way, Robert is already working on living up to that promise.
Those are good reasons, Craig. I wouldn't mind if they came back to The Pantages and only played The Top. And we certainly all know how Robert is but a lot of the things he says are going to happen actually do end up coming to fruition at some point. Having said all that I'll still live with the reality of whatever happens.
The Top was the soundtrack to my last year in high school and the last year of my teens. The night before I flew off after my exams to work abroad for vacation work (in the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq war)the Cure played at 's Hertogenbosch for KRO's (radio station) examfestival. It was live on the radio and I recorded it and played the concert over and over and over and over that summer. Still my favorite album.
Hearing that spinning top intro and the audience's reaction really gave me goosebumps. Here's hoping they'll play this song a few more times in the upcoming shows.
robert has never sounded better. it was perfeck. all the way around. i put it up on my facebook (yeah, i finally gave in) and everyone else's minds were blown, too. i could gush about this all day. so amazing.
Awesome!!
ReplyDeleteHooray! I was hoping someone recorded it. This is a great video. I've always loved this song... the desperation, isolation...
ReplyDeleteThank you!

ReplyDeletei don't think anyone but robert played the song even in 1984... but yeah great tune.. and nice vids
ReplyDeleteThis talk of trilogies, nothing has officially ever been hinted at has it?
ReplyDeleteNo, not at all. Just fan speculation and wishful thinking.

DeleteYes, he did say that. But 3 things...
Delete1. I took it as a joke.
2. Since when do we believe a word Robert says about future Cure projects? : )
3. Taking it for the truth, he only said The Top, nothing about another Trilogy/Reflections show.
