  1. There will surely be plenty of interesting pieces, but all far too expensive for me.

  2. Are some chance to know what will be ? I'm very curious!

  3. It sounds like he's retiring for good, this time. I feel sad but hope he'll have a long life with plenty of other projects. I'd love to be a bit from him, just a kind of goodbye...
I will always love you, and I'm not Whitmey Houston !

  4. This doesn't mean he is retiring for good. It just means the next time he joins the band for a couple years, he'll have even more stuff to auction off when he is done.

    1. Exactly! Ruin everything with guitar wankery extravaganza, then keep on milking it after it's done.

    2. So what do you suggest musicians/actors/celebrities/people to do?
Perform calmly & normal-Throw their things in the trash, give it all away to their neighbor or let it waste in their storages??????
Or should they wait till they are dead & then it is “ok cool” for their record company or agents to do whatever they like with their stuff because then it is of more value to them?
Porl & the band should just do whatever they want because that is what they’ve always done. Whatever THEY .WANT.
Maybe they will start selling beer :D HECK YEAH COOL :P
Porl has always seemed hush-hush mysterious private about what he does that perhaps he already gave half of his things away for charity/family-friends-other musicians we don’t even know about!!!!
I’m just saying because if Angelina jolie auctioned off her underwear [just because she wanted to/had to/ “milking it” whatever/who cares] I wouldn’t question it but hope for the best that I win something :]

  5. Sad thing is that most of this stuff will not end up in the hands of Cure fans who would appreciate it most.

  6. And I agree, for some reason this whole story leaves me feeling more sad than happy. I'm sure we've all dreamed of getting our hands on some band memorabilia, but it seems a bit Un-Cure (and maybe too 'rock and roll')?

  7. Yeah, very sad to see it come to this. :(

  8. adv now ,with im still in the band or not?? sale or guitar and stuff tell nothing about kit the band ,robert or porl not tell noting like this a this time ,and for the sound of the band with now is only shit with no guitar or fucking keybord ROGER o donnell is only my opion but a hate the cure a this time

  9. Whatever, eric. As usual, you make no sense.

  10. Will it end like Robert Secret 7" sleeve? Someone buying it and then selling it again on ebay?

Maybe he is only 'making room' in his house. He surely has plenty of other Cure things still. Or he needs the money, for some reason, and he thinks that it can please some fans to get their hands on one of his belongings. Maybe sometime he says a word about it, that would clear up our 'none of our business' speculations.

I hope who want something will be able to afford something, and if you want to please someone, you know you can contact me : )

  11. Kind of sad to see this. It would be one thing if he were just selling off guitars. But the proofs for the artwork?... that has to sting. I could speculate on two reasons for this: 1, his departure from the Cure was so acrimonious that he'd just rather see it go. (However, the page and plant gold disc was on there, too.) 2, is a speculation i'm not going to make, because i have no basis for it, other than one porl spotting a few years ago.

Either way, one could wonder what the band would sound like with Roger AND Porl in the mix. I love what they each bring to the band... it would have been nice to hear, I think.

  19. Unknown, please not once again this kind of awkward comment I read too often here and there. If you'd be Porl Thompson, you wouldn't have to worry about money and at the same time you should know why The Cure are what they are. I hope you do, really.

  20. Will we be able to absentee bid, via phone or internet? I have, like many others here I'm sure, lovingly re-drawn a lot of Cure art over the years, on book bags, notebooks, on my car, etc. I'd love to own a piece of the magic I've loved for so many years.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes. Check this page for the info on bidding procedures - http://www.omegaauctions.co.uk/buying.php.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Frustrated i can't go, but yes you can bid by phone or online, as long as you register...

  24. What makes me sad about this is the thought that selling these items may NOT be a want, but a need :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Stockport is just up the road from me... and 19th May is the one day I'm in London! Argh! However, I doubt I would be able to afford anything. I guess I could send the wife along...

I would have to agree that this seems quite sad, and certainly the end of an era. But of course this doesn't mean Porl is selling EVERYTHING, just a few bits to make some room!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I hope he'll never join the Band again!!!

I really like the Sound of the current line-up...

    1. LAME. maybe you should rethink about that :P

      ...cause if it wasn't for Porls art n influence *cough* disintegration/kiss me/best albums/covers ever;
that I'm sure the Cure wouldn't have that dreamlike atmosphere the cure
      H A D :/ barely has now .

  27. The "Lego" Head on the Door image at 1:46 is actually artwork by Plasticgod. He did Secret 7" sleeves for The Cure and Florence too. http://twitter.com/plasticgod

  29. Would be really nice that someone could have an interview with Porl about this bids and his departure of the band.

    ReplyDelete
  30. wish there was just a little comment to say 'Porl's okay, he decided to do this instead...' - us Cure fans do worry about the members

    ReplyDelete
  31. i hope one day robert tell what apen with all the members of the band ,borris ,perry, and porl !

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nothing happened in particular. Porl has always been free to follow different projects, playing with The Cure, painting, playing with Page & Plant coming back with The Cure... I hope he'll plan other things and be successful. The nicest man one can meet, humble, accessible, talented... a pure gentleman

    ReplyDelete
  33. Can eric have a regular spot on COF? - 'eric's View' - I'd bookmark that

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tolhurst's departure with the band was the only really dramatic one - the others, well... guess Simon's was a bit dramatic but at least they didn't end up in court.
And as we saw last year even Tolhurst and Smith are ok now.

Some of Smith's nephews/nieces are Thompson's children, right?

Oh and wouldn't buy any of this as I hate collecting stuff - guess Thompson just feels the same way as me ;)

  35. This is just how "rock stars" have garage sales.:)

  39. Thank you, JC. Good to know it isn't hardship forcing him to sell.

  40. "Tolhurst's departure with the band was the only really dramatic one"... apart from Simon's... and Perry's... and Roger's... and Porl's... and Michael's...

I asked Michael Dempsey in 1984 why he'd "left" The Cure and he said "That's just between me and Robert." Sometimes it's just none of our business!

  41. looking forward to reading whatever porl has to say! and looking forward to (trying to buy) something with the parched art logo on it (since it's one of my cure tattoos).

    WE MISS YOU, PORL!

  49. Does anyone know where the proceeds of the auction will be going?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unless I've missed something, this isn't an auction for charity, so the proceeds should go to Pearl.

      Delete
  50. Isn't the Gibson the one used in orange? I've always moved that guitar. It always looked so BIG on pearl.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oops...I meant I've always LOVED that guitar! As for the Schecters, I'm sure now that he's probably not in a sponsorship deal with Schecter, he's dropping his prototypes. Good for Pearl!

    ReplyDelete
  52. @Astromass: Pretty sure the guitar used on "In Orange" is an Epiphone. This guitar, if it's the one I'm thinking of, appeared just a little later, and can be seen from the "Catch" video all the way through the Wish tour.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks so much Porl for the Lot and the nice letter. I could never have afforded this guitar rig from new. It has ended up with the oldest Cure tribute band in the world so it will continue to serve its purpose. I cant believe what good condition its in. Your roadys must be good! It will be be played till it falls apart, fixed and played again. It will be part of a living Cure museum with other bits of Ex-Cure stuff that we tour with.
